Tottenham Hotspur vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: TOTTENHAM 2 ARSENAL1
Spurs go third in the table after withstanding a spirited second-half fightback from Arsenal to claim the points at White Hart Lane. A lacklustre first-half burst into life on 37 minutes when Gareth Bale sprang a woeful Arsenal offside trap to collect a pass from Gylfi Sigurdssson and slide the ball home. Spurs doubled their advantage two minutes later with a carbon-copy goal, this time Scott Parker supplying the pass and Aaron Lennon making no mistake with the finish. To their great credit, Arsenal did not give up and they pulled a goal back early in the second half, Per Mertesacker meeting a Theo Walcott free-kick from the left with a flicked header that went in off the shoulder of Gareth Bale. The Gunners really went for it, but as a result left themselves exposed at the back and Spurs were the ones to carve out the real chances in the last half-hour, Bale being guilty of the most glaring miss. Arsenal are now seven points adrift of Tottenham and in danger of missing out on Champions League football next season and of finishing below their North London rivals for the first time in 18 years.
90' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Walker is booked for kicking the ball away trying to waste time. William Gallas replaces Lennon for Tottenham, Time is almost up.
90' PODOLSKI SHOT DEFLECTED
Podolski swings a hopeful left foot at a bouncing ball outside the box and sees his effort deflect for a corner. Lloris claws the resulting set-piece away.
90' SIX MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of six minutes of added time. Groans all round from the home fans!
90' WALCOTT NOT FAR AWAY
Theo Walcott curls a great free-kick through the Tottenham wall, but his effort fades just past the post.
89' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Dembele's day is done, but at least he is able to limp off under his own steam. Jake Livermore comes in on his place.
87' DEMBELE INJURED
Mousa Dembele is in agony after appearing to get his knee caught under him in a tackle by Ramsey. This could be serious.
85' TOO HIGH FROM GIROUD
Giroud shows wonderful touch to bring the ball down, but then skies a hooked effort over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
83' AMBITIOUS FROM BALE
Gareth Bale feels he can do anything these days and shoots for goal from a free-kick 35 yards away wide on the right. The effort is on target, but the save from Szczesny is nothing more than routine.
80' RAMSEY SHOT GOES WIDE
Rosicky finds Ramsey in on the overlap down the right. The Welshman's shot hits a defender and rolls wide of the far post. That was a great opening.
77' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal make their second change, with Lukas Podolski replacing Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have to go for it, obviously.
75' BALE VOLLEY SAVED
Arsenal only half-clear a ball pumped into the box and are relieved that Bale's well-hit volley is straight at Szczesny.
74' LENNON SHOT BLOCKED
Lennon teases the Arsenal defence before cutting in on to his left foot and getting in a shot that is blocked by Vermaelen.
72' WIDE BY DEFOE
Parker then finds Defoe, who screws a shot wide from the edge of the area. That was a good chance too.
70' GREAT CHANCE SPURNED
Arsenal have a huge escape. Spurs catch the visitors on the break. Defoe feeds Sigurdsson who is in on goal, only to over-run the ball after a dreadful first touch. The Icelander ends up not even getting in a shot and squaring a pass to no-one in particular.
69' DAWSON A ROCK AT THE BACK
Sigurdsson fells Walcott and Arsenal have a free-kick in a dangerous area wide on the right. Cazorla's delivery is headed clear by Dawson and Spurs hang on to what is looking a slender lead at the moment.
67' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Adebayor's day is done. He departs on a stretcher, with some sort of leg injury. Jermain Defoe comes on in his place.
66' DAWSON ESCAPES WITH A WARNING
Michael Dawson is furious that Mark Clattenburg didn't stop the game for Adebayor to get treatment. It leads to a flashpoint between the sides and the Spurs skipper is lucky to get away with a talking-to from the referee.
64' WALCOTT HEADS OVER
Arsenal enjoy a good spell of pressure in the Spurs half, but Walcott heads over disappointingly from a cross by Ramsey, the new right-back.
63' BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Arsenal have scored 10 goals in the final 10 minutes of Premier League games this season - second only to Reading (11). In fact, in the last 15 minutes, they have scored 13 goals and conceded just two. Spurs be warned.
61' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal make a change, with Tomas Rosicky replacing Jenkinson.
60' BAD MISS FROM BALE
Bale passes up a glorious chance to make it 3-1, shooting over the bar from six yards after a fine cross by Assou-Ekotto.
59' TRAINER ON FOR GIROUD
Giroud is down after landing awkwardly and is holding his left shoulder but should be able to continue after treatment.
57' OWN GOAL OR NOT?
Looking at the replay for Mertesacker's goal, it would have not gone in but for the deflection off Bale. I am sure the German will claim it, and it will likely be left up to the dubious goals panel to adjudicate.
55' ALERT SAVE FROM LLORIS
Arsenal come close to the equaliser. Jenkinson plays a low ball in from the right and only a desperate save from Lloris prevents it from reaching Ramsey.
54' WIDE FROM MONREAL
Arsenal are in the ascendancy here and Monreal slices a left-foot shot from long range wide of goal.
52' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 2 ARSENAL 1
The comeback's on! Mertsesacker glances home a free-kick from the left by Walcott, with the last touch coming off Bale's shoulder.
51' WHAT PRICE A FIGHTBACK?
There have been some stunning comebacks in this fixture in recent seasons, but I just don't see Arsenal fighting their way back into this one.
49' WIDE FROM SIGURDSSON
Bale makes good ground down the right and puts over an inviting cross with his weaker right foot which is just too high for Adebayor. Sigurdsson then curls a right-footed effort well wide.
47' DEFENSIVE SHAMBLES
Arsenal had only conceded nine goals away from home coming into this match, a statistic you would barely believe looking at that defending at the end of the first half.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way.
45' HT: TOTTENHAM 2 ARSENAL 0
Spurs are in dreamland at the break thanks to those two goals in two minutes from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. There had been precious little to choose between the sides in what had been a dull half of football up to that point, but Arsenal's defence was twice caught all at sea looking for offside and twice they were undone by the simplest of passes, first by Gylfi Sigurdsson and then by Scott Parker. As things stand, Spurs are heading into third place and seven points clear of their North London rivals. Arsene Wenger has a vital team-talk upcoming.
44' IN NEED OF A GOAL
Dawson makes an excellent defensive clearance to get in the way of a Jenkinson cross. Boy, do Arsenal need a goal before the break.
41' GOAL DETAILS
It's a carbon-copy of the first goal. Monreal let Lennon go, looking for offside, Vermaelen was unaware the Spurs winger was there and let him collect a pass from Parker unopposed before running the ball into the net. A disaster for Arsenal!
39' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 2 ARSENAL 0
Aaron Lennon doubles Tottenham's lead!
38' GOAL DETAILS
It's a straightforward goal for the home side. Arsenal pushed up looking for offside, but Mertesacker was a little late and Bale timed his run perfectly to get on the end of a well-timed through ball by Sigurdsson and steer a shot past Szczesny.
37' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 1 ARSENAL 0
Gareth Bale gives Tottenham the lead.
36' TAKEOVER STORIES
Just in case you missed it, some of the morning papers suggested that an Arab consortium were preparing a £1.5billion bid for Arsenal, double what the club was valued at just two seasons ago. Stan Kroenke is not interested in selling his controlling interest, though, sources say.
33' WASTED BY JENKINSON
Jenkinson gets behind Assou-Ekotto down the right but delivers his cross without looking up and gives Spurs the chance to clear.
31' ARSENAL BOOKING
The yellow card is out again, this time for Ramsey, who hauled back Lennon.
29' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Vertonghen catches Giroud with a mistimed tackle and is the second Tottenham player to be cautioned.
28' ADEBAYOR WANTS A PENALTY
Adebayor takes a tumble in the box hoping for a penalty, but he has to be careful as he went to ground all too easily. The Togo frontman doesn't want to collect a second yellow card or that will be a third dismissal against his former club.
27' MONREAL UP TO THE TASK
Lennon is able to have a real run at Monreal for the first time, but the Spaniard is up to the task and snuffs out the cross. Moments later the same players are involved, and Monreal again cuts out the danger.
25' EXCELLENT COVERING TACKLE
Lennon gives the ball away and Cazorla feeds Walcott, who is denied a shooting opportunity by a lunging tackle from Walker.
22' A SLOW BURNER
Everyone has high hopes for this game, but I have to say it's been one of the duller opening 20 minutes in North London derbies for some time. Bale is just unable to get on the end of a ball from Sigurdssson and he had beaten the offside trap.
20' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
The first name in the book is, surprise, surprise, Emmanuel Adebayor. He makes a lunging tackle on Ramsey after losing control of the ball.
19' BALE'S QUIET START
Bale has touched the ball half a dozen times so far, but on more than one occasion his first touch has been unusually heavy. Is it big-game nerves, or the weight of expectation?
16' SOLID STARTERS
This is Spurs' 28th game of the season and they have still only conceded one goal in the opening 15 minutes.
15' WARMING TO THE TASK
It's been a breathless start, but Arsenal have started slightly the better here without carving out a clear-cut chance.
13' PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Gareth Bale entered the weekend having scored more Premier League goals in 2013 than any other player. Unfortunately for the Welshman he no longer has that honour, his six goals now being two behind Luis Suarez, who netted a hat-trick for Liverpool against hapless Wigan yesterday.
11' GREAT TACKLE FROM VERTONGHEN
Giroud collects a lofted pass from Cazorla and only a timely tackle from Vertonghen prevents the Arsenal man from running in on goal.
9' CAN THEO BE THE HERO?
Theo Walcott has scored four goals in the last four Premier League North London derbies.
7' END-TO_END ACTION
Jenkinson gets in an excellent cross from the right. Dawson heads it off Walcott and is furious to see a corner awarded. Giroud heads tamely at Lloris from the set-piece, then Walker then makes a rampaging run down the other end.
5' GOALS GALORE
Don't expect it to be dull today. This is the highest-scoring fixture in Premier League history with 121 goals and there have been 33 goals in the last six meetings between the sides in all competitions.
3' OFFSIDE FLAG
Spurs win a free-kick on the right. Dawson is just too eager with his run and the flag goes up for offside. He had lost his man, mind you.
2' BALE ROAMS FREE
Gareth Bale is being given a free role again today, filling a central position just behind Emmanuel Adebayor.
1' HERE WE GO
Tottenham kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
Every North London derby is important. Some might argue that this is the most important since the last one at the Emirates in November. Others would go to the other extreme and suggest that this might be the most crucial meeting between the sides of the Premier League era. Whichever view you take, there is certainly going to be plenty at stake and not just fierce local pride and bragging rights when Spurs welcome Arsenal to White Hart Lane on Sunday. Once the top dogs in their part of the capital, the double-winning era has become a distant and fading memory which many of their current crop of Tottenham fans have only read about in books or on the internet. For the best part of two decades now they have suffered something of an inferiority complex and, incredibly, it has been some 17 seasons since Tottenham finished above Arsenal in the top flight. That side of 1994-95 under Gerry Francis only finished seventh, but that was still five places better than the Gunners. Every year Spurs fans hope that this is going to be their year, but every year they end up disappointed. Last season they went to the Emirates on Feb. 26 in third place, ten points clear of Arsenal with 13 games to go. But they were hammered 5-2 that day which led to a nosedive in form which saw them miss out on Champions League football to - you've guessed it - Arsene Wenger's men. There is, though, a different feeling about this Arsenal side. Suspect at the back, no defensive midfield lychpin, no Ian Wright or Robin van Persie up front who is almost assured of grabbing his side a goal when they are most in need. A Champions League miracle aside, they have no interest in winning a trophy again this season and are in danger of missing out on European football's premier club competition for the first time under Wenger. Arsenal are there for the taking and this Tottenham team are bang in form. You get the feeling that it they don't bridge the divide this time then they never will. Today's game kicks off at 1600GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Gareth Bale has been going from the sublime to the ridiculously brilliant in recent weeks, turning into a one-man wrecking crew with a series of sensational goals. A superb individual effort against Norwich at the end of January was the catalyst for a run of eight goals in six games in all competitions and the last-minute winner at West Ham on Monday night just about topped the lot. He is the most exciting player in the Premier League right now, although Arsene Wenger says he will not be looking to do anything out of the ordinary to stop the flying Welshman. “We don't plan for anybody, Wenger told the official Arsenal website. “It is always the same - focus on our strengths and forget about your opponent.” said Wenger. “There is nobody special that you least like to face, all players have different qualities.” Almost as important for Tottenham is that if Emmanuel Adebayor starts, he has to keep his head and not display the sort of reckless behaviour that lost his side the match in the first meeting between the sides this season.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 62 wins to 48 by Tottenham and 41 games being drawn. At White Hart Lane, Spurs have 30 wins to 23 by Arsenal, with a further 22 meetings ending up all square. The earlier meeting between the sides on Nov. 17 at the Emirates saw the Gunners replicate their 5-2 triumph of the season before. Emmanuel Adebayor gave the visitors the lead before a reckless challenge saw him get sent off against his former club and Arsenal went on to totally dominate the game with goals from Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud, Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott. The second Spurs goal came from Gareth Bale. The corresponding match last season on Oct. 2 saw Tottenham win 2-1. The teams exchanged goals either side of half-time through Rafael van der Vaart (40 mins) and Aaron Ramsey (51), with Kyle Walker striking the winner 17 minutes from time with a long-range effort that Wojciech Szczesny will probably feel he should have kept out. Seems like we said exactly the same thing only last week against Aston Villa. Arsenal have won just once at White Hart Lane in the league in their last seven visits, coming from a goal down in September 2007 to win 3-1 with Adebayor scoring twice.
0' FORM GUIDE
Tottenham start the day in fourth place with 51 points from 27 games, one point behind Chelsea, who beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 on Saturday. Arsenal are fifth with 47 points and can close to within a point of their North London rivals with a win. Spurs have actually gathered more points away from home than in front of their own fans, but they have still only lost twice at White Hart Lane, to Chelsea and Wigan. A defeat at Everton on Dec. 9 is their only reverse in the last 15 league games. Arsenal's defence away from home is the stingiest in the top flight, with only 11 goals conceded in 13 games. They have won their last three in the league and collected 13 points from the last 15 available.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has recovered from an ankle injury and could play some part for the home side. Younes Kaboul, Sandro and Tom Huddlestone (all knee) and Clint Dempsey (calf) are all ruled out. Arsenal will be without defender Bacary Sagna (knee), so Carl Jenkinson is likely to be handed to task of trying to stop Gareth Bale should he start on left. Abou Diaby faces a fitness test on a calf problem and Kieran Gibbs is still out with a thigh injury.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mark Clattenburg, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2004. This is the 16th top-flight appointment of the season for the Tyne & Wear whistleblower, who has produced 47 yellow cards and dismissed six players, joint top among top-flight officials with Anthony Taylor. Unusually, five of the players to receive red cards from Clattenburg have come from the home side, the last being West Brom's Goran Popov against Tottenham a month ago. Today sees Clattenburg take charge of this fixture for the first time since the 2009-10 season when he was selected to referee both North London derbies, a duty he undertook without major incident. His assistants today are Darren Cann and Simon Beck, while Andre Marriner is the fourth official.
