Liverpool vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' FT: LIVERPOOL 3 TOTTENHAM 2
Spurs blow the chance to record what would have been a hugely impressive victory at Anfield as a calamitous mistake from Kyle Walker followed by the concession of a needless penalty gifts the home side spoils. With the visitors in charge Walker inexplicably chose to play the ball back to his goalkeeper from near the halfway line and after Hugo Lloris miscontrolled Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing was able to run on and shoot past Jan Vertonghen on the line. The winner eight minutes from time came after Jermain Defoe gave the ball away in a dangerous position which resulted in Benoit Assou-Ekotto conceding a penalty for a foul on Luis Suarez. Steven Gerrard duly converted. Vertonghen had put Tottenham in charge as they recovered from a sluggish start and conceding the first goal of the match to take the lead. Both Spurs goals were similar in construction, Gareth Bale delivering the set-piece and Vertonghen the unlikely finish on both occasions. The first was an equaliser just before the interval. Liverpool failed to close down a short corner and Bale's cross to the far post was headed home by the powerful defender. The second came eight minutes into the second half, with the Spurs man sliding a left-foot shot inside the post following a Bale free-kick. Suarez, who worked tirelessly for Liverpool, gave the home side the lead on 21 minutes with a neat finish after a Jose Enrique pass. The Reds move into sixth, ahead of neighbours Everton on goal difference. For Tottenham, it is a first defeat in 13 league games.
90' TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTION
Tommy Carroll replaces Assou-Ekotto for Tottenham. There will be three minutes of added time.
89' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Jordan Henderson replaces Daniel Sturridge for the home side.
87' PENALTY CLAIMS
Liverpool want another penalty for a foul by Vertonghen on Johnson. It should have been a spot-kick, looking at the replays.
86' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Carragher is booked for a foul, then Holtby replaces Livermore for Spurs. Bale's 40-yard free-kick dips just too late.
84' DISASTER FOR TOTTENHAM
Again Spurs are masters of their own downfall. Defoe gave the ball away in a dangerous position and Assou-Ekotto's challenge while not malicious was certainly clumsy.
82' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 3 TOTTENHAM 2
Liverpool have a penalty for a foul by Assou-Ekotto on Suarez. Gerrard slides the spot-kick into the corner.
81' WORKING HARD IN DEFENCE
A sweeping ball from the right by Sturridge finds Suarez in space down the opposite flank, but Tottenham's defenders hunt in packs to make sure the chance comes to nothing.
77' STAGE SET FOR BALE
This match is very reminiscent of the one between West Ham and Spurs a couple of weeks back. That ebbed and flowed with both sides enjoying periods of dominance. But we all remember who popped up to net the stunning winner, don't we?
75' BALE HEADS WIDE
Walker's cross from the right is headed wide of the post by Bale. It's difficult to pick a winner at the moment.
74' SIDE-NETTING FOR STURRIDGE
Downing crosses from the right, but Sturridge can only head into the side-netting from beyond the far post.
71' SCUFFED EFFORT FROM ENRIQUE
A Gerrard right-wing corner is headed clear to Enrique, whose left-foot strike is always heading wide of goal.
68' GOAL DETAILS
It's a calamity for the visitors. Walker played a disastrous ball back to his goalkeeper from near the halfway line wide on the left. Lloris failed to control it outside the area and Downing robbed him before advancing and shooting between the legs of Vertonghen on the line.
66' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 2 TOTTENHAM 2
Stewart Downing marks his 300th Premier League performance with a Liverpool equaliser.
64' DESERVED FRONT-RUNNERS
Make no mistake about this, Spurs deserve their lead. There is a steely resolve and belief about this Tottenham side that we have seen in few of their predecessors over the past three decades.
61' DEMBELE SHOT BEATEN AWAY
Dembele lets fly with a powerful drive from 25 yards which Jones again has to beat away rather than hold.
60' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Coutinho makes way for Joe Allen for Liverpool, a somewhat surprising change by Brendan Rodgers.
59' TOO HIGH FROM DEFOE
Spurs pile on the pressure. Defoe has a shooting chance, but launches his effort into the stands.
58' OFF THE POST
Bale does magnificently down the right, skinning Gerrard and Carragher for pace. His ball to the far post is brought down by Sigurdsson, whose half-blocked effort comes back off the outside of the post.
57' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Vertonghen is cautioned for handball, trying to get in the way of a pass forward from Suarez.
55' GOAL DETAILS
It's another goal from a set-piece. Bale lobbed a free-kick in the centre, Dawson made a nuisance of himself and Vertonghen showed excellent composure to guide a right-footed shot into the corner beyond Jones.
53' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 1 TOTTENHAM 2
Jan Vertonghen puts Spurs in front!
52' JONES DENIES DEFOE
Spurs threaten again with Jermain Defoe down the inside-right channel. A low, dipping shot causes Jones some problems, but the Australian at least gets his body behind the shot and Liverpool scramble the ball clear.
52' STURRIDGE GETS SOME STICK
Gerrard finds Suarez in space down the Liverpool right, but Sturridge makes a disappointing effort to bring down the ball and then angers the Kop by not trying to regain possession.
50' NO MISTAKING DANGER MEN
Entering this match, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale had both scored ten goals in the Premier League since Boxing Day, three more than any other player. Suarez has another today, Bale has yet to tally. They were also the two players to have attempted the most shots in the top flight this season, Suarez having had 147 attempts at goal and Bale 113.
48' BALE NOT BEST PLEASED
Gareth Bale was having a right moan to referee Michael Oliver about that Gerrard challenge as the sides emerged for the second half. It still looks tough but fair, having seen it again on the replay.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool get the second half under way.
45' HT: LIVERPOOL 1 TOTTENHAM 1
Jan Vertonghen's headed goal in first-half stoppage time ensures the sides go in even at the break. The Belgium rose highest to nod home a searching cross from the right by Bale to give the visitors an equaliser their play in the latter stages of the half just about deserved. Liverpool had taken the lead courtesy of Luis Suarez's 22nd goal of the season midway through the half. The Uruguayan collected an incisive pass down the inside-left channel and made the finish look easy. Suarez could have set up Daniel Sturridge for a second soon after, but unusually for him chose the wrong option. Spurs started slowly, but Bale has gradually become more of an influential figure. The Wales midfielder did try one ambitious long-range free-kick that forced an awkward save from Brad Jones before his lovely back-heel set up Gylfi Sigurdsson for a great chance, only for the Icelander to pull his shot wide of the left-hand upright.
45' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 1 TOTTENHAM 1
Vertonghen levels for Tottenham, heading home a quality cross from the right by Bale at the far post.
44' NOW GERRARD IS WARNED
Gerrard catches Bale on the follow-through after winning a header fairly and again it is only a word of warning from a very impressive young referee. Bale gets treatment in the meantime.
43' WORDS WITH THE REFEREE
A tangle of legs between Suarez and Parker leads to a minor altercation and a talking-to for both from Mr Oliver. Well done referee for not producing a card.
41' SPURS PILING ON PRESSURE
A tame shot by Assou-Ekotto out on the left is catching practice for Jones. Spurs are bossing this match at the moment and Liverpool will be happy to hear the half-time whistle.
38' SIGURDSSON MISSES GREAT CHANCE
A lovely back-heeled flick from Bale finds Sigurdsson in space 22 yards from goal. The Icelander looks for the corner, but drags his shot wide of the target. That was a great chance.
36' WIDE AGAIN BY BALE
Gareth Bale is starting to get a taste for this and goes on a weaving run that sees him shoot well wide with his weaker right foot just as he is about to be closed down.
33' BALE BLASTS OVER
Bale shoots for goal from 30 yards out, but the effort ends up about 25 rows back in the Kop and is greeted by much jeering from the massed ranks of Scousers behind Brad Jones.
30' WHERE'S THE PLAYER OF THE SEASON?
That free-kick aside, we've seen very little of Gareth Bale in the first half-hour.
28' CLOSE TO A SECON
Liverpool could be two up. A fantastic move down the right sees Gerrard free Suarez and instead of picking out the unmarked Sturridge ten yards out he fires a cross-shot across the face of goal that Lloris parries to safety.
25' TRIVIA ANSWER
The seven players to reach 500 Premier League appearances before Jamie Carragher are: Ryan Giggs, David James, Frank Lampard, Gary Speed, Emile Heskey, Phil Neville and Sol Campbell. Score one point for each correct answer and a bonus point if you got all seven.
23' GOAL DETAILS
Coutinho and Enrique twice combined excellently down the left. The Spaniard simply slid an innocuous ball forward into space and Suarez poked it under Lloris first-time with the outside of his right foot. A quality finish for his 22nd of the season.
22' GOAL: LIVERPOOL 1 TOTTENHAM 0
Luis Suarez gives Liverpool the lead.
21' COUTINHO SHOOTS OVER
Coutinho collects a throw-in from Enrique and tries a hugely-ambitious curler from 25 yards out wide on the right. It's not too far away, but did not worry Lloris in the slightest.
19' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Jamie Carragher today becomes the eighth player to make 500 Premier League appearances. Who were the seven to reach the milestone before him? Answer in a few minutes.
17' GALLAS INJURED IN WARM-UP
Losing Dawson would certainly be a problem for Spurs, especially as substitute William Gallas tweaked his calf in the warm-up.
16' DAWSON IN THE WARS
A crunching tackle from Dawson on Suarez sees the Spurs defender come up limping.
14' MAGIC IN HIS BOOTS
That save from Jones was not from the text book, that's for sure. But I wouldn't blame him for that one as it veered off its normal path right at the last minute, almost as it if was being operated by remote control. He's a genius, that Gareth Bale...
12' AWKWARD SAVE FROM JONES
Referee Michael Oliver plays a good advantage before bringing play back for a foul by Agger on Dembele. Spurs have a free-kick more than 30 yards from goal. Bale steps up and his wickedly swerving effort is parried awkwardly by Jones.
10' THE BOY FROM BRAZIL
Coutinho looks a real find for Liverpool. He created two goals with sublime pieces of skill at Wigan on Monday and looks to have all the talent and promise of Raheem Sterling with the added bonus of an end product.
8' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
A wonderful pass from Coutinho puts Sturrudge in, but the former Chelsea frontman shows the touch of a Sunday League footballer and kicks the ball 15 yards in front of him trying to round Lloris. Chance gone.
6' OVER FROM STURRIDGE
Downing makes a rare tackle in midfield and feeds Sturridge, who tries an ambitious angled drive from 25 yards that ends up in the crowd.
5' CLEAN SHEET TOP PRIORITY
Liverpool have yet to concede a goal in any of their seven home wins this season, so a clean sheet is the order of the day for home supporters.
3' JONES NEEDS A GOOD DISPLAY
I'd be a bit worried about Brad Jones being in goal if I was a Liverpool fan. He had a real stinker in the FA Cup defeat at Oldham in January.
2' WALKER'S PACE A GODSEND
Suarez and Sturridge combine well in the early going, but Walker is across impressively to snuff out the danger.
1' HERE WE GO
Spurs kick off, attacking the Kop end to our right.
0' TEAMS
Liverpool: Jones, Johnson, Agger, Carragher, Enrique, Downing, Gerrard, Lucas, Coutinho, Suarez, Sturridge. Substitutes: Gulacsi, Wisdom, Skrtel, Allen, Henderson, Shelvey, Sterling. Spurs: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Dembele, Parker, Livermore, Sigurdsson, Bale, Defoe. Substitutes: Friedel, Naughton, Gallas, Caulker, Huddlestone, Holtby, Carroll.
0' TEAM NEWS
Liverpool make two changes to the side that won at Wigan. Pepe Reina is ruled out with a calf strain, so Brad Jones plays in goal, and Daniel Sturridge replaces Joe Allen. Aaron Lennon's hamstring problem sidelines him for Spurs, his place going to Jake Livermore, with Jermain Defoe in place of Emmanuel Adebayor the only other change to the side that beat Tottenham last Sunday.
0' PREVIEW
The big games keep coming for Tottenham. Having seen off North London neighbours Arsenal last Sunday in the Premier League and Italian giants Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday, they can cap one of their best weeks in recent memory with a win at Liverpool on Sunday. Traditionally, Anfield has been one of those grounds where Spurs have found victories hard to come by, but the form they are in at the moment they fear no-one. If you can win at Manchester United - as they did earlier in the season - you can win anywhere. And if you have Gareth Bale in your team, you have a threat not only from set-pieces, but also from open play anywhere on the pitch. Liverpool are enduring another unspectacular season which will be made all the more unpalatable to their fans come its conclusion when Manchester United celebrate their record 20th English league title. There have been some good signs under Brendan Rodgers, but they have yet to record a league victory over any of the sides above them this season, and have to overcome this hurdle if they are to instil some belief they can become legitimate contenders again. Liverpool have five of the division's bottom six still to play and their only two difficult-looking matches after this one - again Chelsea and Everton - both come at home. It's a long shot to reach the Champions League qualification places, granted, but it's not totally out of the question they could run the table should they be able to see off Tottenham today. That in itself is a big ask. Today's game kicks off at 1600GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
This match features the mouth-watering prospect of Luis Suarez, the Premier League's leading goal-scorer with 21, coming up against Gareth Bale, who has scored ten of Tottenham's last 15 goals in all competitions. Rather than listen to me whitter on about their respective strengths, how about hearing from someone who knows what they are talking about: Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. Here's what he told the official Liverpool website: “Bale is a big threat. He's so quick and powerful, he's difficult to stop. I'm sure every manager has plans to deal with Bale but often he finds a way around it because he's world class. We will need to be on top of our game. Bale is instrumental for Tottenham but people say the same about Luis Suarez and us. They are the two most in-form players in the league. Alongside Messi and Ronaldo, Suarez and Bale are currently among the top four players in Europe.” If he gets the start ahead of Lewis Holtby, Gylfi Sigurdsson is another player Liverpool will have to look out for. The Icelander has started to find the sort of form that made him such an attacking threat for Swansea last season and has contributed two goals and two assists in Tottenham's last three games. “One of the reasons we brought him to the club was his goal-scoring ability and he's found his finishing touch now,” Andre Villas-Boas told the official Tottenham website. “Hopefully he'll build on it and we can have him at this level for the rest of the season.”
0' FORM GUIDE
Liverpool start the day in eighth place with 42 points from 28 games, three behind sixth-placed Everton. With a victory, their superior goal difference will take them above their Merseyside rivals, who were beaten in the FA Cup on Saturday. 24 of Liverpool's points have come at home, but they have also been beaten four times in front of their own fans, most recently by West Bromwich Albion. Tottenham are third with 54 points and can close to within two points of Manchester City with a win. They can also distance themselves from top-four rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, neither of whom have a Premier League fixture this weekend. Liverpool have won their last two, scoring nine goals and conceding none. They have lost just one of their last six aand hammered Wigan 4-0 at the DW Stadium last time out. Spurs are unbeaten in 12 league games, winning eight, and have lost just once (at Everton) since the 5-2 reverse at Arsenal on Nov.17. The 24 points they have collected away from home is the second-most in the top flight behind Manchester United and they are also the division's second-highest scorers away from home, again behind United.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 63 wins to 41 by Tottenham and 25 games being drawn. At Anfield, Liverpool have 43 wins, Tottenham just six, with a further 35 meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides this season on Nov. 28 saw Tottenham win 2-1. Goals from Aaron Lennon (seven minutes) and Gareth Bale (16) put the home side in control early on. The same two players combined for the Liverpool consolation 18 minutes from time, Lennon smashing his goal-line clearance of Steven Gerrard's header straight into the face of Bale, who could do nothing about a very unfortunate own goal. The corresponding match here last season finished in a goalless draw. Tottenham's win the season before last - a 2-0 triumph on May 15, 2011 - was only their second in 20 visits in the Premier League era, and it's actually two wins in 25 at Anfield dating back to the old Division One days.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Striker Daniel Sturridge (thigh) and defender Martin Skrtel (knee) have both recovered from injury and will be hoping for a return for Liverpool. Sturridge will likely be handed a start, but Skrtel may have to settle for a place on the bench with veteran Jamie Carragher in such good form. Tottenham's England winger Aaron Lennon is very doubtful after suffering a hamstring injury in the Europa League victory over Inter Milan on Thursday. Mousa Dembele also came off in the second half of that match, but he is expected to be fit and Emmanuel Adebayor is available again after a knee injury. Tom Huddlestone (knee) and Clint Dempsey (calf) are doubtful and Younes Kaboul and Sandro (both knee) are definitely out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Today's referee is Michael Oliver, who made headlines in August 2010 when he took charge of the match between Birmingham City against Blackburn Rovers aged 25 years and 182 days, breaking Stuart Attwell's record as the youngest ever Premier League referee. It took Oliver a while to find his feet, and he had two early red cards overturned on appeal, but since then has proved himself to be an accomplished official. The Northumberland whistleblower has shown a total of 42 yellow cards in his 16 Premier League games to date this season and has dismissed one player, Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark, in the home defeat by Everton way back in August. Oliver's assistants today are Mick McDonough and John Brooks, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
