Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' ARSENAL EARN A VITAL WIN IN LONDON DERBY
Arsenal's revival take a great bit of encouragement with an important win over London rivals Spurs. They looked potent in attack, but more impressively, solid at the back. Theo Walcott caused problems all game, and it was his flanked attack that led to the goal, Olivier Giroud converting his drilled cross. Tottenham Hotspur plugged away in the last 15 minutes, but they couldn't find a way through. Arsene Wenger has faced much criticism of late, but this will surely buy him some time. Mind you, that's about the only thing being bought at the Emirates this summer.
90' FREE KICK
There's a bit of head volleyball going on in the area, with a very animated Andre Villas-Boas praying for the ball to fall to a white shirt. The referee blows for an Arsenal free kick, though, and they can see the game out. It finished Arsenal 1, Tottenham Hotspur 0.
90' WALKER CHANCE
A late Tottenham Hotspur corner falls at the feet of Walker, but he scuffs his shot. Just seconds remain!
90' FINAL MINUTES
Tottenham Hotspur are really cranking up the pressure here, but they need to remain composed in the final third. Arsenal are dealing with the crosses fairly easily.
90' ARSENAL CHANGE
Bacary Sagna comes on for Walcott to try and shore things up at the back. There's five minutes of added time to survive. Kyle Walker fires high and wide from 25 yards.
89' POOR PLAY
At this late stage, Arsene Wenger won't be happy to see his right-back, Jenkinson, trying to play a left winger. He inevitably loses the ball to Walker, whose cross is caught by Szczesny.
86' LAMELA SHOT
Defoe chips the ball to Lamela, who is lurking on the right side of the penalty area. He cuts inside, but Mertesacker and Koscielny do enough, the the eventual shot is tame.
83' GOOD DEFENDING
Theo Walcott is making inroads on the right, with Giroud manufacturing a counter-attack on the left. The defence remain well-marshalled, though, with Jan Vertonghen making the crucial interception.
82' YELLOW CARD
Jermain Defoe goes into the book.
80' MONREAL CHANCE!
Olivier Giroud beats his man on the right flank, before squaring the ball for Walcott. The Englishman's shot is beaten away by Lloris right into the path of Nacho Monreal, who should score with his first touch. He can't find his feet, though, and the chance is wasted.
79' ARSENAL CHANGE
Nacho Monreal comes on for Rosicky.
76' WHAT A CHANCE!
Erik Lamela's first touch is a dangerous free kick. Jermain Defoe latches onto it and tests Wojciech Szczesny. The Arsenal keeper palms away, only as far as Soldado, whose close-range effort is blocked away. He claims it struck a hand, but there wasn't much Giroud could do about it anyway. The ball goes out to Vertonghen, and then Walker, but the wing-back fires wide to relieve the pressure.
74' BAD NEWS
Etienne Capoue is going to have to be stretchered off, with Sandro coming on in his place. Erik Lamela will also make his debut, coming on for Townsend.
73' CAPOUE INJURY
Etienne Capoue tangles with Cazorla, and the Arsenal man lands on Capoue's ankle. The Spurs midfielder will require treatment.
71' LLORIS ON HAND
Great chance for Arsenal is sniffed out by Lloris again, who anticipates Giroud's through ball to Walcott and races out to quell the danger.
70' SPURS CHANGE
Jermain Defoe comes on to aid Soldado up front. Paulinho comes off; he's struggled to orchestrate the Spurs attacks as he has in recent games.
68' STALEMATE
Neither side can manufacture a clear-cut chance at the moment. Paulinho skews a shot well wide, while a few inaccurate passes at the other end have brought Arsenal attacks to a close.
64' GIROUD GOES CLOSE!
Arsenal catch their opponents on the break. The ball finds its way to Giroud, who twists past a defender and fires a shot from just outside the box. It takes a deflection, forcing Lloris into a world-class fingertip save at full stretch.
63' TURNING THE SCREW
Tottenham Hotspur turn up the heat, bombarding the Arsenal area with crosses from Chadli and Townsend. The Gunners' rearguard remain organised and clear the danger.
60' SPURS BREAK
Tottenham Hotspur break quickly, with Walker receiving the ball deep on the right flank. He goes down dramatically, earning a free kick in a dangerous area. Kieran Gibbs has every right to be annoyed with Walker's blatant dive. The free kick comes to nothing.
58' ISOLATED
Roberto Soldado looks a little frustrated. He hasn't had much service, especially in this second period. Jermain Defoe is available, as well as Sigurdsson and Holby, who could both cause difficulties for Arsenal in the final third.
55' FLAMINI GETS LUCKY
Mathieu Flamini dives into a challenge, and, though there's no malice, and his feet are low, his studs are showing and he's lucky to only receive a yellow card.
53' PENALTY APPEAL
Roberto Soldado falls theatrically to the ground following the slightest of contact with Koscielny. The referee isn't impressed with his thespianism and waves away the mild protests.
49' EARLY SET-PIECES
Both sides have to deal with early set-pieces in this second half. Laurent Koscielny heads out Walker's corner, and Dawson deals with Cazorla's free kick. Ramsey also shoots wide.
47' WILSHERE
Jack Wilshere went off just before the break, and it's reported that it was due to illness, rather than injury. He was really effective during the first half - I'd love to see him when he's feeling well! Arsenal may miss him during this second period.
46' KICK-OFF
Arsenal restart the game.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
It's been an action-packed London derby so far; the big spenders, Tottenham, taking on an underspending Arsenal side on the brink of a revival, yet on the brink of a collapse, following an opening day loss. Both sides have produced excitement on the attack, but it's the Gunners who have edged the first 45, Giroud converting Walcott's drilled cross. It's still evenly balanced, and the creativity of Townsend and Chadli is sure to cause more headaches for Wenger in the second half.
45' HARD WORK WASTED
Aaron Ramsey works extremely hard to chase the ball, eventually forcing a mistake and nicking the ball. He wastes the opportunity, however, overcooking the through ball to Walcott. That's the last action of the half. It's Arsenal 1, Tottenham Hotspur 0.
43' ARSENAL CHANGE
Wilshire is going to come off early on, after picking up a knock in midweek. Mathieu Flamini, back at the Emirates after five years in Milan, is his replacement.
40' GAPS IN SPURS DEFENCE
Arsenal continue to play through the gaps in defence, with Walcott's pace causing all sorts of problems for the Spurs defence. They need to sit deeper or organise themselves better to close these gaps that are opening. At the other end, Townsend's low drive is smartly saved.
37' WALCOTT THROUGH
Some quick interplay in the centre of the park culminates in Wilshire playing a wonderful through ball to Walcott, who's on it in a flash. Luckily for Spurs, Lloris is just as quick, racing out to deny the nippy winger.
35' YELLOW CARD
Tomas Rosicky is the first man to go into the book this afternoon.
32' RAMSEY CHANCE!
The Gunners break with pace once again, with Walcott driving the onslaught from the right. He plays a neat one-two with Wilshere before sliding the ball to the back of the penalty area where Ramsey awaits, but the ball is slightly behind him and his shot clears the crossbar.
30' SLOW BUILD-UP
Tottenham Hotspur are holding onto the ball, trying to refocus after Arsenal's fruitful spell. Andros Townsend lets fly, but Szczesny is on hand to deny him, at the expense of some stinging fingers. Arsenal's attacks are much, much quicker.
26' WALCOTT SHOT
The underspenders threaten again, with Walcott at the heart of the attack once again. This time he pulls the trigger himself, but Lloris gets down at the near post to beat the ball away.
24' HIGH COMPETITION
The reformed Tottenham side have competition in every place; each player is working hard for the right to feature in Andre Villas-Boas' plans. This is the first time they've been behind this season, though, so it'll be interesting to see how they respond.
23' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Theo Walcott loses his man and fizzes the ball across goal from the right flank. OLIVIER GIROUD is quickest to react, getting in front of Dawson and poking home from close range.
22' GOOOAAALLL
Olivier Giroud puts Arsenal ahead!
19' HIGH PRESSING
Arsenal are back on the ball, but Spurs are working hard off the ball, not allowing the hosts out of their own half. Townsend finally pressurises a defender into a mistake, stealing the ball and winning a corner for his side. The set-piece comes to nothing.
16' ALL SPURS
Spurs have a stranglehold on possession at the moment, but with the likes of Walcott and Cazorla in the Arsenal ranks, they'll have to be wary of counter-attacks.
13' CHADLI SHOT
Nacer Chadli's right-footer is saved, before Soldado drags his shot wide. It's certainly a high pace these sides are setting, and Spurs are beginning to threaten more and more.
11' DANGERMAN
Nacer Chadli is getting the better of Carl Jenkinson in the early stages, outwitting him with a repertoire of feints and flicks. Jenkinson was drafted in at the last minute with Sagna picking up a knock in the warm up, which could explain his uncertainty. This time, Chadli's cross isn't good enough, but there's some early warning signs.
9' SETTLING IN
Tottenham Hotspur finally get some time on the ball and are content with keeping it for the time being. They work it forward to Chadli, who controls the ball magnificently and fires the ball into the area. Laurent Koscielny is equal to it.
8' GREAT BALL
Great vision and execution from Santi Cazorla to pick out the run of Giroud, but the ball is coming over his shoulder and can't control it properly.
5' GOALS EXPECTED
This is the most goal-blessed fixture in Premier League history, and, of course, the last two encounters here have ended 5-2. There's been an average of five goals in the last seven meetings. This start is rather promising; Cazorla goes close with a free kick again.
3' CAZORLA FREE KICK
Santi Cazorla hits it as well as he could have hoped, curling the ball over the wall and away from the Spurs keeper. Hugo Lloris gets across quickly to palm the ball behind. Olivier Giroud heads Cazorla's delivery wide of the mark.
2' QUICK START
Tottenham earn an early flag kick, but Arsenal get the ball clear and immediately launch an attack of their own, Etienne Capoue having to concede a free kick to nip it in the bud.
1' KICK-OFF
Tottenham get the game underway. The atmosphere inside the Emirates is, as you'd expect, rather electric.
0' SPURS LINE-UP
Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen and Rose form the back line, with Lloris in between the sticks. Etienne Capoue has really bossed the midfield in recent games, and today will allow Paulinho, Dembele, Townsend and Chadli a little more freedom in attack. Roberto Soldado is the lone striker, preferred to Jermain Defoe, who has failed to score in 12 consecutive meetings with Arsenal, last netting a derby goal in November 2004.
0' ARSENAL LINE-UP
Wojciech Szczesny is Arsenal's stopper this afternoon, with his back line consisting of Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny - back from suspension - and Gibbs. Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere will feature despite picking up knocks during the week, and will be joined in midfield by Rosicky, Cazorla and Walcott. Olivier Giroud has scored two in two so far, and will be looking to make himself a hero in the London derby; he heads the Gunners' attack.
0' PREVIEW
It's derby day and at 16:00 BST, all eyes will turn to the Emirates for the London rivalry; Arsenal will look to cement their revival with a win over the newly-configured Tottenham, who have transformed their side with a plethora of new faces this summer - quite the opposite to the Gunners, who have just one more day to secure the transfer they've been promising throughout the entire close-season.
0' RECENT MEETINGS
In recent times, this fixture has been the most high-scoring of all; Arsenal have won the last two by a 5-2 scoreline, and there hasn't been a clean sheet from either side in the last eight meetings. In fact, Spurs have only shut Arsenal out once in the last 35 encounters, their last clean-sheet coming in 1998. That said, the Lilywhites have opened a season with back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since 2005.
0' PENALTIES
It has been Spurs' attacking play that has been the most impressive, though. Andros Townsend has become a real threat down the right, while Nacer Chadli has created has created the second most chances in the Premier League so far. Soldado has been in form, too, netting penalties in both opening games. Interestingly, Tottenham didn't have a single penalty last season, and have had one in each of the first two games this season. Arsenal are the only team in the top flight to concede two penalties in their opening two ties.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Laurent Koscielny is back in contention after serving a one-match ban for his red card against Villa on the opening day. Ramsey and Wilshire overcome midweek knocks, while Podolski, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arteta are all ruled out.
0' TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS
Adebayor and Assou-Ekotto are not match fit, while Aaron Lennon is also a doubt with a foot complaint.
