Everton vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: EVERTON 1 CHELSEA 0
Chelsea miss the chance to go top of the table, losing at Goodison Park despite dominating for much of the match. The lone goal came right at the end of the first half, Steven Naismith heading home from close range after good work by Leon Osman and Nikica Jelavic. That effort aside, it was the visitors who created the more meaningful chances. Samuel Eto'o headed over from a great position in the early going and was then denied by a superb last-ditch tackle from another debutant, Gareth Barry. Tim Howard made a great save to deny Ramires and without creating anything quite so clear-cut after the interval a succession of half-chances came and went. So it's a first Premier League defeat second time round for Jose Mourinho and a first Everton win for new boss Roberto Martinez. The only two unbeaten sides remaining in the Premier League are Everton and their Merseyside rivals Liverpool, who play Swansea on Monday.
90' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton's final change sees the excellent Mirallas replaced by Gerard Deulofeo, on loan from Barcelona.
90' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Barkley runs straight into Mikel but is awarded a rather fortunate free-kick. Baines almost makes Chelsea pay, curling an effort off the top of the bar. Three minutes of added time.
89' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Goalscorer Naismith makes way for John Stones for Everton. The Barnsley-born youngster is making his Premier League debut.
87' CHELSEA BOOKING
The Chelsea card count is growing. A cynical body-check from Mikel on Coleman earns him a caution.
83' CHELSEA BOOKING
Last man David Luiz hauls down Mirallas with a cynical challenge on the halfway line that rightly earns him a yellow card.
81' CHELSEA BOOKING
Hazard is booked for tripping Coleman just outside the area.
80' BEATEN AWAY
Everton are looking to hit on the counter and a blistering strike by Mirallas is beaten away by Cech. You still feel the home side need a second goal.
78' ETO'O DENIED
Another chance is spurned by Chelsea. Eto'o fails to make good enough contact with a wonderful dipping cross from the right by Ramires.
75' COLEMAN STANDS HIS GROUND
Eto'o tries to take on Coleman down the left, but the full-back stands his ground and shows that the former Barcelona striker has lost some of the pace that made him such a menace earlier in his career. Everton then scramble away a Chelsea corner. Fifteen minutes to hang on.
71' MIRALLAS DENIED
A foul by Hazard gives Mirallas a shooting opportunity 30 yards from goal. The effort is round the wall and on target, but Cech is down to his left to save.
69' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
A bold move from Mourinho sees Cole replaced by Torres, a striker for a full-back.
68' INTO THE SIDE-NETTING
Ramires snakes out a leg to meet a cross from the right by Ivanovic, but again the shot ends up in the side-netting.
67' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton make a change. Jelavic, who has been ordinary again tonight, is replaced by new signing James McCarthy.
65' CHELSEA BOOKING
Branislav Ivanovic handles the ball goalwards and receives a yellow card for his Diego Maradona impression.
63' SPOT-KICK OR NOT
Replays of that challenge on Oscar are inconclusive. It was probably a foul, though the Chelsea man went to ground too easily. And initial contact was probably outside the box anyway. We'll give Mr Webb the benefit of the doubt.
59' PENALTY CLAIMS
Oscar almost makes an instant impact, going down in the area under a lunging tackle from Distin. The Brazilian cannot believe he has not been awarded a penalty.
58' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
Mourinho makes a double change, with Oscar and Frank Lampard replacing Mata and Schurrle.
57' ETO'O DENIED AGAIN
A cross from the right by Schurrle is chested goalwards by Eto'o, but straight at the grateful Howard. Jelavic heads wide at the other end.
55' HANGING ON
It's attack against defence at the moment. Chelsea are launching wave after wave of attacks and it's all Everton can do to keep their own goal intact.
53' PRESSURE BUILDS
A poor clearing header from Jagielka falls at the feet of Ramires, but the Brazilian's hooked attempt lacks pace and direction.
50' TIME FROM FRANK?
Chelsea have been so wasteful in front of goal that Jose Mourinho must be tempted to throw on his one natural goalscorer from the bench. That's right - Frank Lampard.
48' CHANCES KEEP COMING
Howard spills a long-range drive from Hazard, but Eto'o makes a right mess of the follow-up, screwing a shot across the face of goal.
47' ANOTHER BAD MISS
Chelsea carve out another glorious chance. Schurrle latches on to a forward ball from Ramires only to lift the ball over Howard but into the side-netting.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Chelsea get the second half under way.
45' HT: EVERTON 1 CHELSEA 0
Everton lead at the break thanks to a goal on his birthday from Steven Naismith in first-half stoppage-time. Both sides had chances to seize the advantage in the early going, Samuel Eto'o heading wastefully over the crossbar for Chelsea after Ramires had picked him out at the far post, while at the other end Nikica Jelavic had time to pick his spot but headed straight into the arms of Petr Cech. Tim Howard almost gifted the visitors the softest of goals, but debutant Gareth Barry saved the day with a terrific challenge on Eto'o. The United States stopper redeemed himself with a magnificent diving save to keep out a strike from Ramires. Schurrle also fired over as the visitors ended the half the stronger, only to be undone by that Naismith effort.
45' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a sickener for Jose Mourinho as his side have dominated. A scrappy passage of play ended with Osman picking out Jelavic at the far post and he headed down for Naismith to net from close range. That's half-time.
45' GOAL: EVERTON 1 CHELSEA 0
Steven Naismith gives Everton the lead on the stroke of half-time.
45' FINISHING STRONGLY
Chelsea attack with purpose again, but Mata is caught in two minds and his cross-cum-shot drifts harmlessly past the far upright.
41' IVANOVIC HEADS OVER
A foul by Barry on Hazard gives Chelsea a free-kick in a good attacking position, but Ivanovic heads over from the resulting set-piece.
39' BAD MISS BY SCHURRLE
Chelsea break again with purpose and after Ramires is robbed by Baines, Schurrle has only Howard to beat from the edge of the area, but blasts wastefully over the crossbar.
36' SUPERB SAVE BY HOWARD
A ball from the right by Eto'o sets up Ramires, whose right-foot shot is heading for the far corner until Howard gets across and makes an excellent diving stop.
35' WIDE BY NAISMITH
Mirallas swaps wings and has an almost immediate impact, crossing from the right for Steven Naismith, who hooks a low shot wide of the upright.
33' POOR FROM MIKEL
A horrible effort by Mikel slices into the crowd. It's not hard to see why the Nigerian has yet to register a goal in 184 Premier League outings.
30' BRILLIANT FROM BARRY
What an escape for Everton! Tim Howard carelessly gives the ball away inside his own area to Schurrle and Samuel Eto's is left with a tap-in into an empty net. Only he isn't - Gareth Barry gets back to make a quite brilliant blocking tackle.
29' QUIZ ANSWER
The last player to score a league goal against Everton at Goodison Park was .... Hal Robson-Kanu for Reading.
25' IT'S QUIZ TIME
Entering this match Everton had kept six straight home clean sheets and gone 546 minutes since allowing a goal at Goodison. But who was the last player to score against them here? Answer in a few minutes.
22' PUTTING HIMSELF ABOUT
Phil Jagielka catches a stray Samuel Eto'o elbow to the face but there was no intent to injure there and he will be fine to continue.
19' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
With Liverpool not playing until tomorrow, a win by Chelsea would take them top of the table. Eto'o blasts hopelessly over the bar. Oh dear, he could be a like-for-like replacement for Fernando Torres.
16' SUCH A HARD WORKER
Steven Naismith's work-rate in the opening quarter of an hour has been incredible. Another long-busting run from the Scot earns the home side a corner, but it comes to nothing. Where's Marouane Fellaini when you need him?
13' BARKLEY FULL OF PROMISE
Barkley bursts forward from midfield and almost finds Mirallas down the left. The youngster was short of support as Jelavic had tracked back trying to win the ball having originally given it away.
10' BAD MISS FROM JELAVIC
Everton break quickly, with Barkley picking out Naismith raiding down the right. The cross is superb, but the header from Jelavic is tame and straight at Cech. What a chance.
8' HAPPY FEET
Chelsea are brimming with confidence and Mata almost waltzes through the entire Everton defence, only being robbed by the last defender.
7' HOME SWEET HOME
Wonder if Leighton Baines watched the Manchester United debut of Marouane Fellaini earlier? The left-back could so easily have made the same move from Goodison in the summer transfer window.
5' CONFIDENT START
Eto'o wins Chelsea an early corner, but Luiz hooks his shot into the crowd from the ensuing set-piece. Nevertheless, the visitors have started confidently. A raking crossfield ball from Ramires then picks out Eto'o, who heads wide from an unmarked position at the far post.
2' INJURY UPDATE
So why is Nikica Jelavic leading the Everton line? Because Arouna Kone has a knee injury, according to his manager. Steven Pienaar is missing too, the South African having picked up a knock in training.
1' HERE WE GO
Everton kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Samuel Eto'o makes his debut for Chelsea, with Fernando Torres dropping to the bench alongside Frank Lampard, who makes way for Juan Mata. Loan signing Gareth Barry makes his debut for Everton, replacing Marouane Fellaini.

0' PREVIEW
Goodison Park is traditionally one of those grounds the top clubs go to knowing they can expect a battle and a real test of their title credentials. Manchester United went there last season and went down 1-0, one of only two away defeats they suffered in the whole of their title-winning campaign. The previous season's champions, Manchester City, suffered a similar fate the year they won the Premier League. In fact, you have to go back to the 2007-08 season to find a championship-winning club who actually went to Goodison and won - Nemanja Vidic's late header for United proving to be the difference between the sides that day. Needless to say, then, we will know a lot more about Chelsea's claims to a fifth domestic title come the final whistle tonight. Are they pretty good, or mere pretenders? Everton's success has always been built around a strong team ethic, work-rate and blood, sweat and tears. But with their no-nonsense manager David Moyes and combative midfielder Marouane Fellaini now plying their trade at Manchester United, will a visit to the Toffees still prove to be a sticky assignment for the big boys or will the Merseysiders reveal a softer centre under new boss Roberto Martinez? Since the beginning of March Chelsea have lost just once in the Premier League and with the arrival of Jose Mourinho it is little wonder that most bookmakers have them as joint title favourites alongside Manchester City. What quality you must have in your squad to be able to leave Juan Mata out of your starting line-up and not miss a beat. Today's game kicks off at 1730BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Everton have hardly been banging in bags of goals this season, but one of the attacking players to catch the eye has been Ross Barkley. The youngster made his senior England bow in the 4-0 win over Moldova last week and Toffees boss Roberto Martinez rates him highly. “He is a terrific listener, said which you don't get too often in the modern game with young players,” Martinez said. “We saw what he is capable of doing in the future for England, but he is a young man with incredible potential and we need to keep working at that potential to ensure he has a terrific career.” At the other end of the spectrum, Frank Lampard may be nearing the other end of what has been an excellent club career, but he has found a new lease of life under Jose Mourinho and although not an automatic selection under previous manager Rafa Benitez, he still managed to score twice on this ground last season. If fact, nine of Lampard's 204 Chelsea goals have come against Everton, with only Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth having been victimised more in front of goal by the England midfielder. Lampard's most memorable goal against Everton, though, was the long-range left-foot strike that won the 2009 FA Cup final.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 53 wins to 48 by Everton and 47 games being drawn. At Goodison, though, it's a different story, with Everton having won 36 times, Chelsea 16 and 22 games being drawn. The last meeting between the sides took place on the final day of last season, Chelsea winning 2-1 at Stamford Bridge with goals from Juan Mata (7 minutes) and Fernando Torres (76), Steven Naismith (14) having scored what ultimately proved to be a consolation goal for the visitors. That Torres strike, incidentally, was to date his one and only goal of 2013 in the top flight. The corresponding match last season on Dec. 30 saw Chelsea win 2-1. Steven Pienaar gave Everton a second-minute lead, but the Blues showed real resilience to fight back and earn the points with a goal in each half from Frank Lampard (42 and 72 mins). Prior to that Chelsea win, Everton had won the last three against the Blues at Goodison, but that trio of wins were the only ones achieved in the past 25 meetings overall in this fixture, home or away.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea started the weekend in second place, with seven points from their opening three games. Everton were in 15th spot, with three points from three matches. Chelsea have made a strong start to the season, winning at home to Hull and Aston Villa and playing out a bore draw at Old Trafford. Everton are still awaiting their first win under Roberto Martinez. Having said that, they have yet to lose either, drawing with Norwich, West Brom and Cardiff, keeping clean sheets in their last two games. Everton's last home defeat in the league came on Dec. 30 2012, a 2-1 loss to, you've guessed it, Chelsea. Since then they've won seven and drawn three at Goodison. Everton have kept nine clean sheets in their last 13 matches and have not conceded in their last six home matches in the Premier League. Chelsea are undefeated in their last 11 top-flight matches.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Roberto Martinez may be tempted to give debuts to new signings James McCarthy and Gareth Barry, though the former is a slight doubt having picked up a knock on international duty for the Republic of Ireland. Seamus Coleman is also rated 50-50 and Darron Gibson (knee) and defender Antolin Alcaraz (hernia) are definitely ruled out. On-loan striker Romelu Lukaku cannot play against his parent club. Chelsea's star-studded squad came through the international break unscathed and Jose Mourinho confirmed that former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o will likely see some action (probably off the bench) in what would be his Chelsea debut.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Howard Webb, who presided over both the Champions League and World Cup finals in 2010. Webb showed more yellow cards than any other Premier League official last season, 109 in 30 matches. He also brandished four straight red cards, the last to Manchester United defender Rafael in the home defeat by Chelsea in May. The South Yorkshire whistleblower has shown five yellow cards in his two Premier League games to date. Webb's assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
