Minute Commentary
90' RAMPANT RAMSEY AT THE DOUBLE
Aaron Ramsey continued his recent run of good form with a superb brace that sunk Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, the game ending 3-1 to Arsenal. The first half saw the Gunners dominate, and they took the lead after just ten minutes when Olivier Giroud finished off a pass from Mesut Ozil, who put in an impressive debut performance. Sunderland had offered nothing, but sprung to life after the break and equalised just three minutes into the half when Lauent Koscielny brought down Adam Johnson inside the area and substitute Craig Gardner smashed home the resulting penalty. The Black Cats pressed forward but were undone when Ramsey scored with a piledriver of a volley after 67 minutes. There was time for the Welshman to add another with an assured finish from Giroud's flick, and from then on the result was never in doubt. Arsenal's resurgence continues, while Sunderland are still looking for that first win.
90' FULL TIME SUNDERLAND 1 ARSENAL 3
It's all over here at the Stadium of Light, where Arsenal have beaten Sunderland by three goals to one.
90' DI CANIO ON THE NAUGHTY STEP
Paolo di Canio is sent down the tunnel after a sustained period of argument with the fourth official and, eventually, the referee and ends up watching the game on a screen near the tunnel entrance. Nobody apart from the three seem to have any idea what that was about.
90' SUBSTITUTION
Chuba Akpom, fresh from the Arsenal academy, makes a brief Barclays Premier League debut in place of the stricken Giroud.
90' INJURED PARTY
Olivier Giroud puts a decent chance wide after Gibbs had dribbled down the right flank and pulled the ball back with pinpoint accuracy. The Frenchman managed to hurt himself in the act of shooting and is forced to receive treatment from the physios.
89' WICKHAM GOES FOR GOAL
Gardner's crossfield ball to Jack Colback is a good one, and the left back turns to lay it off to Wickham. The result is a smart shot that arrows through Koscielny's legs but can't beat the goalkeeper.
88' SUBSTITUTION
Arsene Wenger gives Nacho Monreal a late run-out in place of Theo Walcott.
86' NO PUNISHMENT
Ki Sung-Yueng leaves Wilshere in a heap with a chunky tackle, the South Korean somehow escaping what looked like a deserved yellow card.
83' HEAD BOYS
Fabio Borini tries his luck with an effort from 25 yards, the shot nicking up off Flamini to spin out for a corner. Jozy Altidore leaps high to meet Johnson's flag-kick, heading the chance narrowly over the bar. Moments later Diakite makes his way up the right flank and curls in a cross that Connor Wickham can only head several yards over.
80' SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal club captain Thomas Vermaelen, returning from injury, comes on for the final ten minutes. Ozil is the man to make way, and he receives an enthusiastic ovation from the Arsenal supporters.
77' SUBSTITUTION
Steven Fletcher is withdrawn in favour of Connor Wickham.
76' GOAL!!! ARSENAL
AARON RAMSEY lays the ball off to Ozil, who feeds it into the feet of Giroud. The Frenchman plays a first-time pass into the path of Ramsey, who pokes gleefully past Westwood for his second goal of the afternoon. That must be game over now.
73' GARDNER GOES CLOSE
Gardner powers past the flailing Kieran Gibbs and drives a low shot across goal and wide of the far post. That was a great opportunity for Sunderland to draw level.
71' SUBSTITUTION
Charalampos Mavrias is withdrawn in favour of on-loan Liverpool striker Fabio Borini.
70' STRANGE DECISION
Bacary Sagna faces up to Jozy Altidore as the big American strides towards goal. There's a coming together just outside the box, but Altidore stays on his feet to slot the ball past Szczesny and into the bottom corner. Incredibly, Martin Atkinson pulls play back for a foul by Sagna, who is booked. Ever heard of advantage, ref?
67' GOAL!!! ARSENAL
Carl Jenkinson finds a yard down the right and picks out AARON RAMSEY with a pinpoint pass. The in-form midfielder meets it with a ripping volley from just inside the area that thunders past the helpless Keiren Westwood and into the back of the net. What a strike.
66' ONE-TWO
Waclott plays a tight one-two with Aaron Ramsey down the right to emerge in space and swipe a low ball across the face of goal. Only problem is, nobody in an Arsenal shirt is there to meet it.
63' TABLES TURNED
This really has been a game of two halves. It's amazing just how much better the Black Cats are looking now, while Arsenal have wilted completely. At the moment the hosts look much more likely to score.
60' YELLOW CARD
Mathieu Flamini slids in on Altidore, who had flicked the ball over the Frenchman, and is shown a yellow card for his troubles.
59' GOAL DISALLOWED
Adam Johnson wriggles past Gibbs to direct a ball across the face of goal, and Steven Fletcher is on hand to knock it into the net at the back post. The Scotland striker is dismayed to find his goal will not stand; he'd strayed a couple of yards offside.
58' POOR TOUCH
Wilshere slots a ball into the feet of Giroud, who flicks it on with his back to goal. Theo Walcott is the recipient, but his first touch is poor and the ball rolls harmlessly through to Westwood.
55' TRACKING BACK
An efficient counter-attack from Arsenal sees Walcott make headway down the right and cut the ball back for Giroud. The striker attempts to set up Wilshere with a poked pass, but it's cut out by the backtracking Charalampos Mavrias.
52' YELLOW CARD
Gardner has been in the thick of everything since his half time introduction; here the midfielder pulls down Ozil as the German tears down the right wing, earning himself the game's first booking.
48' GOAL!!! SUNDERLAND
Unbelievably, the Black Cats are level just three minutes into the second half. Johnson speeds into the box, where Laurent Koscielny loses his head to bring the former international down with a reckless tackle. The ref awards a penalty, and CRAIG GARDNER steps up to send Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way with a smash into the bottom-left corner of the net.
47' BETTER FROM SUNDERLAND
Sunderland have emerged from the changing rooms looking energised. A pass out wide to the right from today's captain Adam Johnson allows Celustka to get in a cross that Steven Fletcher very nearly connects with.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Paolo di Canio has seen fit to make a change to his struggling side, replacing David Vaughan with Craig Gardner.
45' EASY FOR ARSENAL
It's been a match in name only so far at the Stadium of Light, where Arsenal have been utterly dominant for 45 minutes. An ongoing duel between Theo Walcott and Keiren Westwood has seen the England man denied time and again when clean through on goal, and it's an absolute wonder his name isn't on the scoresheet. As it stands the only goal was scored by Olivier Giroud, who finished off an 11th minute pass from who else but Mesut Ozil. Sunderland have struggled even to get hold of the ball, and their one effort of note came when Mobido Diakite crashed a header off the bar from a corner. A cakewalk for the Gunners so far, but with the score at 1-0 you're only one mistake away from things being turned on their heads completely. Let's see what transpires in the second half.
45' HALF TIME SUNDERLAND 0 ARSENAL 1
It's half time here at the Stadium of Light. Mobido Diakite commits a cardinal sin by asking for Mesut Ozil's shirt with the game only half complete; he can expect a rocket from his manager for that one.
45' DEJA VU
Olivier Giroud's cute flick around the back of the defence gifts Theo Walcott yet another opportunity, and yet again Keiren Westwood denies him with a super save. This could get tedious.
43' JUST WIDE
Jack Wilshere drifts inside from the left and picks out Walcott with a superb floated ball over the centre backs. The winger goes for goal with his head and succeeds only in putting the chance wide.
41' RAMSEY TAKES A KNOCK
Ramsey is left limping after an accidental collision with the lumbering Altidore, but the Wales man looks likely to run it off successfully.
38' BLACK CATS TOOTHLESS
The hosts haven't launched anything resembling an attack in a long time. As things stand it's hard to see how they can get back into this game.
35' KEEPER'S BALL
A drop of the shoulder from Gibbs takes the left back past Ondrej Celustka to deliver a looped cross, but the keeper is equal to it. No way through that time.
31' NO JUSTICE FOR JACK
Wilshere protests vehemently after being blocked off unceremoniously by Roberge in the midst of a trademark weaving run. That did look like a rather cynical foul, but Martin Atkinson deems otherwise.
28' WALCOTT V WESTWOOD
Walcott and Westwood are having their own little duel today. This time it's Carl Jenkinson who sets the forward free down the right with a slide-rule pass, and again Westwood rushes out to make an excellent sprawling save.
26' HUMAN AFTER ALL
At least we know Ozil is human now; the man from Real Madrid steps up to take a free kick in a dangerous position, getting it up and over the wall but failing to generate any power whatsoever. Westwood makes an easy save.
23' DISCIPLINE REQUIRED
Wilshere has a little go at Diakite after a hefty challenge from the centre back leaves him floored. He'll have to be careful - Arsenal have been shown two red cards in three seasons on this ground.
20' GUNNERS PRESSING
Some sumptuous combination passing from the Gunners sees Jack Wilshere set up Ramsey, who drives a shot in from inside the area, only to see it deflect wide off a defender's back.
18' SURPRISE SHOOTER
Jozy Altidore very nearly catches Wojciech Szczesny unawares with a spanker of a 25-yard effort that the Pole can only parry away. Fortunately for the visitors, no Sunderland player is on hand to convert the rebound.
15' WALCOTT DENIED
A delicious pass from Aaron Ramsey takes Colback out of the game to send Theo Walcott scampering clear. The England man takes aim but is denied by a top-notch save from Keiren Westwood; what a chance that was to make it two.
14' OFF THE BAR
It seems that goal has shaken the Black Cats from their slumber. A corner from the left finds the sprinting Mobido Diakite, who loses Giroud to thump a header against the crossbar. Perhaps we're to see a contest after all.
11' GOAL!!! ARSENAL
Kieran Gibbs plays a terrific ball in behind the full back for Ozil, and the German shows all of his composure to slot a low cross into the path of OLIVIER GIROUD. The striker makes no mistake to slot low into the bottom corner for his first Barclays Premier League goal scored outside of London.
8' NO CONTEST
It's one-way traffic so far here at the Stadium of Light. The Gunners have their opponents pinned in their own half, and whenever Paolo di Canio's side do gain possession the result is a long ball pumped up the pitch. It's a cakewalk for the dominant Koscielny to deal with every time.
5' BLOCKED OFF
Mesut Ozil's first telling contribution takes the form of a corner from the left that's flicked on by Laurent Koscielny. It falls kindly inside the box for Theo Walcott, whose low drive is blocked by the body of Valentin Roberge.
3' JACK IN THE DRIVING SEAT
Jack Wilshere shows he's still one of Arsenal's star turns with a driving run foward that takes him past three opposition players. In the end Jack Colback gets across to block off the midfielder and earn a goal kick.
1' KICK OFF
After a warm handshake between the rival managers, referee Martin Atkinson gets us underway here at the Stadium of Light. Can Sunderland get their first win of the season in front of their own fans?
0' ARSENAL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Mesut Ozil starts. That's what we all were waiting to find out, but please remember Arsenal will be fielding another ten men today. Included in that number are Bacary Sagna, who fills in at centre back with Per Mertesacker ill, and Mathieu Flamini. The re-signing from AC Milan gets his first start after Santi Cazorla was ruled out late on with an injury.
0' SUNDERLAND LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Paolo di Canio has given his stuttering side a much-needed shake-up with five changes to the side that loast against Palace last time out. Valentin Roberge comes in for the suspended John O' Shea, while Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altiodore start up front in place of Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won. In midfield on-loan Swansea playmaker Ki Sung-Yueng gets a first start, with Mavrias Charalampos also in the line-up. Another loanee, Fabio Borini, is on the bench.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Mesut Ozil may make the starting line-up, with the injured Tomas Rosicky set to miss out, while Per Mertesacker is unavailable through illness. Yaya Sanogo is still not fit enough to play any part, along with fellow long-term absentee Lukas Podolski.
0' SUNDERLAND TEAM NEWS
John O'Shea is suspended following his dismissal against Crystal Palace, although the centre back is injured anyway after picking up a knock while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland. Loan signing Fabio Borini could make his debut, while fit again Steven Fletcher should start in attack.
0' ONE TO WATCH
The country's attention will be focused on one man more than any other this weekend, and that is Arsenal's new superstar signing Mesut Ozil. At a time when the accumulating of foreign players is being widely criticised, no-one would deny that the £42.5million Germany midfielder will be a huge asset to the Barclays Premier League. He genuinely is one of the most talented players in world football.
0' WENGER DRAGS HIS HEELS
Arsene Wenger is in no mood to make rush decisions over his future; the veteran Gunners boss has until the end of this season left on his current contract and, with many fans believing someone new should step in, talks over a new deal have not yet begun. Wenger has even said any decision may rest on the success of his summer signings.
0' PAOLO BACK IN PLAY
Paolo di Canio did what he does best this week, causing outrage in an appearance for a former AC Milan XI against none other than Newcastle United's old boys at St James' Park. The former Milan forward was unsurprisingly booed every time he touched the ball in the testimonial match for veteran Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper, but he gave as good as he got with a vintage performance in midfield. That's our Paolo.
0' REF WATCH
This afternoon's man in the middle will be Martin Atkinson. Mr Atkinson has shown leniency so far this season, having brandished just four yellow cards and no reds in his two Barclays Premier League matches. With bruiser Lee Cattermole out of the picture for now, Sunderland (and certainly not mild-mannered Arsenal) will not hold any worries for the 42-year-old official.
0' SUNDERLAND V ARSENAL
Things haven't been going too well for Sunderland this season; the Black Cats are without a win in the Barclays Premier League and currently sit second from bottom. So it might not be the best time to play host to a confident Arsenal team boasting a collection of in-form stars and the summer's most impressive transfer purchase, a certain Mesut Ozil. Sunderland manager Paolo di Canio is already being spoken of as under pressure, although whether the man himself would agree at this early stage is seriously doubtful. The Gunners come off the back of a stirring 1-0 victory against Tottenham, a match many expected them to lose, and today's hosts could struggle to dampen that momentum. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 3pm for all the action from the Stadium of Light.
