Stoke City vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
Stoke City will be left wondering how they failed to gain all three points after dominating this afternoon's 0-0 draw with Manchester City at the Britannia Stadium. The Potters had all the best chances: an unmarked Jonathan Walters glanced wide on the quarter of an hour mark, Kenwyne Jones headed just over in the second period and Joe Hart pulled off a fantastic reaction save to save Matija Nastasic from the humiliation of an own goal. Opportunities at the other end, though, were rare and Manuel Pellegrini's unorthodox team selection - which didn't include Sergio Aguero, Jesus Navas or Fernandinho - will inevitably draw criticism. Ultimately though, the Chilean boss will be satisfied to head back north with a point.
And that's full-time. Stoke City and Manchester City share the points after playing out a 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium.
That must be the last chance. James Milner's corner kick finds Alvaro Negredo at the far post but he messes up his volley and fluffs the ball wide.
Jonathan Walters goes into the book after pulling back Yaya Toure as he embarked on a powerful run through the middle. Stoke are getting fidgety.
Peter Crouch is dragged down by Matija Nastasic to give Stoke a late chance to find a winner. Marko Arnautovic takes the free-kick but drills it high into the Britannia Stadium stands. Meanwhile, there will be six minutes of added time.
Stoke haven't quite given up on getting the win yet. Peter Crouch's introduction has prompted them to go a little more direct and, with Stephen Ireland latching on to second balls, there's still a chance they could grab a winner. The Irishman's latest touch is poor though, lofting the ball straight into the arms of Joe Hart.
It's Manchester City who are making the running now as Stoke begin to tire. The hosts are staying disciplined, though, and the visitors don't look like truly threatening.
He's a hard man and now Robert Huth is, amazingly, back on his feet and looks set to continue. That's a relief for Stoke, who have also made all three of their allowed substitutions already.
This doesn't look good. Robert Huth tries to head away a Jesus Navas cross and gets a push in the back from Alvaro Negredo, who accidentally knees him in the head. He's flat out on the pitch and appears to be unconscious. Jonathan Walters was quick to react and put the German defender into the recovery position.
Kenwyne Jones is down on the pitch for Stoke and he appears to be in some pain. Wincing as he puts pressure on his troublesome ankle, he limps off the pitch to be replaced by Peter Crouch.
The visitors have looked more threatening since making their substitutions but there's still no cutting edge to their attacks. If Stoke come away from this game with any less than three points, they'll feel slightly distressed.
Manchester City make their second change as Samir Nasri makes way for Jesus Navas. His pace could be a threat to Stoke on the counter attack.
What a save! Erik Pieters marauds forward from left-back and his pass finds Marko Arnautovic inside the penalty area. His first time cut-back nearly goes into the back of the net off Matija Nastasic but Joe Hart pulls off a magnificent reaction save to deny Stoke the opener.
Stoke City are ready to make some substitutions, with new signings Marko Arnautovic and Stephen Ireland emerging from the bench in place of Charlie Adam and Matthew Etherington. The two departing Potters players have both had great games today.
Javi Garcia is all at sea out there, and his latest faux pas almost gifts Stoke the opener. He swipes at the ball but misses, giving Jonathan Walters an opening, but Pablo Zabaleta is on hand to make a vital tackle.
Sergio Aguero does indeed replace Stevan Jovetic as Manchester City look to find more fluidity. It's been a decent debut for the ex-Fiorentina man but he hasn't had much service from his team mates.
It could be Stevan Jovetic's last contribution of the afternoon as he heads wide from a Samir Nasri free-kick. Sergio Aguero is preparing to come on for the visitors. Meanwhile, Charlie Adam has a shot from range which Joe Hart saves well.
This Manchester City side are lacking the nimble players to make the difference in the final third. Only Samir Nasri is capable of weaving his way between defensive lines, meaning City's style today has been somewhat rigid.
That was nearly the opener. Charlie Adam floats a diagonal cross into the Manchester City penalty box and Kenwyne Jones rises high above his marker before nodding narrowly over from ten yards out. Manuel Pellegrini needs to change his backline because Jones is dominant in the final third.
That's going to be the first yellow card of the afternoon and Javi Garcia can't complain, as he hacks down Kenwyne Jones on the halfway line. It's obvious that the Spaniard is playing out of position and he's not had the best of games.
And as has so often happened in this game, there's immediately a chance at the other end. Alvaro Negredo finds Stevan Jovetic, who is peeling off Ryan Shawcross at the far post, but the Montenegro international's vicious volley veers over the bar.
Stoke have started the second half where they left off in the first - on the front foot. Geoff Cameron's low cross is aimed brilliantly across the goal. Jonathan Walters attacks the near post but can't make a connection with the ball. What a chance!
We're back underway at the Britannia Stadium, with neither manager having opted to alter personnel at the beginning of the second half. Can Manchester City up their game or will Stoke continue to test the visitors' shaky defence?
Stoke City will go into the half-time interval wondering how they're not leading Manchester City, having spurned a number of opportunities to break the deadlock. The best chance fell to an unmarked Jonathan Walters, who glanced wide from five yards when it was easier to find the net, after just 15 minutes. Kenwyne Jones has been a handful for a shaky-looking visiting defence and he nearly scored the opener, too, after robbing Samir Nasri but his low drive was blocked by Joe Hart. At the other end, Asmir Begovic hasn't been bothered too much - that could prompt Manuel Pellegrini to turn to his star-studded replacements.
And that's half-time at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke City and Manchester City remain all square at the interval.
Robert Huth cuts through the back of Stevan Jovetic, conceding a free-kick 25 yards from his own goal. Yaya Toure, who has already scored twice from a similar position this season, is the favourite but Aleksandar Kolarov takes it, bending a shot over the bar.
Stoke come back again, though. Steven Nzonzi finds Charlie Adam in the middle of the pitch and 25 yards from Joe Hart's goal. The Scot connects well with the ball but his drive is straight at the England goalkeeper.
Manchester City have weathered the storm but it's hard to argue that they've not been second best in the first half. Stevan Jovetic has been largely anonymous and his second attempt in a sky blue shirt is even weaker than his first, and is also dragged wide of the near post from distance.
It's all Stoke now and Manchester City can't get out of their own half. The visitors can't handle the hosts' physicality, particularly at the back where Kenwyne Jones has made mincemeat of Javi Garcia and Matija Nastasic. Joleon Lescott is on the bench for Manchester City and could be an option in the second half.
Another great chance for Stoke! Kenwyne Jones bundles Samir Nasri off the ball inside the final third before going in one-on-one with Joe Hart. The England goalkeeper spreads himself well to save, though, and another chance disappears.
What a waste! Steven Nzonzi manages to get himself running clean through at goal but inexplicably decides to turn back, despite the fact that the nearest Manchester City defender was at least five yards away from him. Mark Hughes has a face like thunder and looks extremely frustrated on the touchline.
Every moment that Manchester City are in possession is being greeted with monumentally hostile noise by the Britannia Stadium crowd. The chorus of boos eventually gets to Matija Nastasic who over-hits a cross-field pass by 30 yards, much to the pleasure of the Stoke supporters.
The last few minutes have been good for Manchester City, who have been knocking the ball around with slickness and confidence. As always, Stoke are organised, though, meaning the visitors must remain patient.
Javi Garcia is penalised for a blatant push on Kenwyne Jones, conceding a cheap free-kick in the process. Manchester City's defensive fragility is already being exposed, with Garcia having allowed Walters to evade him for the early missed opportunity, too.
There's a cracking atmosphere at the Britannia Stadium, with the Stoke players being urged to press Manchester City all over the pitch. There's already been some tasty challenges but the visitors have reacted well - Alvaro Negredo tries to bend a shot into the top corner from outside the area but gets under the ball too much.
The match is already extremely stretched, with huge vacant spaces in both halves of the pitch. Stevan Jovetic is the latest man to take advantage of that, striding to within 25 yards of the Stoke goal before hammering a shot straight down Asmir Begovic's throat. Moments later at the other end, Jonathan Walters misses an absolute sitter from five yards out, glancing a header just wide when unmarked.
He hit that! Yaya Toure clears the ball from his own penalty area but only as far as Marc Wilson, who is 35 yards out. That doesn't put off the Republic of Ireland international though, who lashes at the ball with his left foot. Unfortunately for Stoke, the ambitious effort veers wide of Joe Hart's left-hand post.
The visitors are mounting some real pressure at the moment, particularly down the right flank. Pablo Zabaleta and James Milner combine well to work some space down that wing but the Argentine's low cross is smashed clear by Ryan Shawcross.
Manchester City are matching Stoke in an intense midfield battle early on. Yaya Toure robs Steven Nzonzi before passing to Samir Nasri, but the Frenchman's side-footed effort, after running at the Potters' defence, is no trouble for Asmir Begovic.
Manchester City have the first shot of the match as Alvaro Negredo's knock-down falls to Aleksandr Kolarov on the edge of the penalty area. The Serbian pokes at the ball with his left foot and blazes way over the bar.
Stoke have started on the front foot and have the visitors pinned back into the final third. It will be interesting to see if the changes Manchester City have made, with the Champions League tie with Viktoria Plzen in midweek, come back to haunt them.
We're up and running at the Britannia Stadium, with the noise of Mark Clattenburg's whistle signalling the start of the game. Stoke City are in their traditional red and white stripes, with Manchester City clad in their familiar sky blue kit. Will Stoke frustrate Manchester City at the Britannia again or will the much-changed visitors head back north with all three points?
Stoke City are unchanged from the 1-0 victory over West Ham United, with Charlie Adam proving that he's recovered from back spasms in time to play. Kenwyne Jones leads the line again, meaning Peter Crouch must settle for a place on the bench, which is also where new signings Marko Arnautovic and Stephen Ireland can be found.
Manchester City ring the changes, making five changes to the starting line-up that beat Hull 2-0 a fortnight ago. Alvaro Negredo starts up front in place of Edin Dzeko, while Stevan Jovetic gets a first start over Sergio Aguero. Javi Garcia partners Matija Nastasic at the back while James Milner and Jack Rodwell will line up in midfield ahead of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas. Meanwhile, David Silva's absence means a start for Samir Nasri.
Stay tuned for full live text commentary on this afternoon's match. Bradley King will be with you for kick-off, which is at 3pm.
Referee Mark Clattenburg takes charge of today's Premier League fixture. The Durham-born official has handed out seven yellow cards in his two top-flight matches this season - both of which have ended 1-0 to the visiting side.
New Stoke City signing Stephen Ireland could make his Potters debut against old club Manchester City this afternoon. The Republic of Ireland international spent five years in Manchester, winning the club's Player of the Year award in 2009. He fell out of favour, though, eventually moving on to Aston Villa before signing for Mark Hughes' side on transfer deadline day. Glenn Whelan, too, began his career at Eastlands but he looks set to miss this afternoon's match.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "I know all I need to know about Stoke City, I've watched all the three games, have all of the information on their different ways. They're a very good team at home, they have a good approach in the box – like every other game, we'll have to do very well if we want to win."
Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said: "Their record at the Britannia (four points from 15) isn't that great and I remember getting beat myself here going up against 10 men in the 2008/09 season. I don't think we have changed all that dramatically since I arrived here, we have just tried to give ourselves more options going forward. Defensively, we can be as solid and as hardnosed about it as we have ever been because of the quality of our defenders. I've just tried to give them more options and more freedom to attack teams at the right times and in the right areas."
As would be expected, Manchester City have had the upper hand in fixtures between themselves and Stoke City, winning five of the last seven matches in all competitions. But the Potters have often frustrated City on home turf, with the last four league games between the two teams all ending in draws. While the then-champions knocked the hosts out of the FA Cup there last season, it ended 1-1 in the Premier League fixture, with Javi Garcia cancelling out Peter Crouch's opener. In fact, Manchester City haven't beat Stoke away from home in the league since January 1999, when Gerard Wiekens' winner earned the visitors a 1-0 win in what was then Division Two.
It may only be mid-September but the injury list is already piling up for Manuel Pellegrini. David Silva is the latest man to be thrown onto the absentees pile after picking up a knee injury which will rule him out for the rest of the month. He joins Vincent Kompany (groin), Gael Clichy (thigh), Micah Richards (hamstring) and new signing Martin Demichelis (knee) on the sidelines as City call on their squad depth. Playmaker Stevan Jovetic could be the beneficiary of Silva's knock to make his first start for the club, though Samir Nasri will also be pushing for a game. Aleksandr Kolarov will come in at left back while Alvaro Negredo could win the race to lead the line ahead of Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko.
Stoke could be without midfield duo Glenn Whelan and Charlie Adam for today's game. Whelan has a hamstring injury and is set to miss out but Adam could feature despite withdrawing from the Scotland squad due to back spasms last week. Those doubts could pave the way for Stephen Ireland, who will be itching to make his first start since signing from Aston Villa on transfer deadline day. Another incoming in the window, Austrian winger Marko Arnautovic, is also expected to be thrown in from the first whistle.
Manuel Pellegrini takes his Manchester City side to the Britannia Stadium to play Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, knowing that leaving with anything less than three points would have the club's owners getting fidgety. City sit third in the table but have already lost to Cardiff and only narrowly edged past Hull, putting in less than convincing performances in the process. A victory at the Potters would expel any lingering doubts over the Chilean but Stoke boss Mark Hughes will be more than motivated himself, having been sacked as manager of today's opponents in somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in 2009. How he would love to add to the strain on his opposite number today - and lead his new side to three straight Premier League wins in the process.
