West Ham United vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' WEST HAM 2-3 EVERTON
If you are a believer in fate and all that jazz, you will not be in the least surprised by this late turnaround as West Ham were the unfortunate victims of another identical steal and grab from the same opponents, at the same ground, with the same amount of men, last season. This one started timidly, but the Hammers grabbed a just-about deserved lead through a deflected Ravel Morrison strike. However, with the introduction of the powerful Romelu Lukaku, things soon started to warm up. Leighton Baines grabbed a well earned equaliser midway through the second period with one of his textbook free-kicks, but Mark Noble ended Everton's good spirits with a contentious penalty. However, Noble then had somewhat of a brain cramp, bringing down Ross Barkley from behind when there were covering defenders, and Lee Mason had little choice but to send him off. Baines made the Hammers pay the ultimate price with another expertly taken free-kick into the opposite corner, and Romelu Lukaku topped off his virtuoso performance with a towering header to condemn West Ham fans to a cruel feeling of deja vu. I said earlier this one could be a cracker - I'm glad to say my prediction came to full fruition.
90' EVERTON STEAL A VICTORY AT UPTON PARK
Lee Mason puts his whistle to his lips and the travelling Everton contingent can celebrate a massive three points. What a game!
90' WHERE THEY WANT THEM
Lukaku has two attempts to completely finish West Ham off, but he has to settle for two corners, which will suit the visitors down to the ground with just seconds remaining.
90' GOING LONG
Textbook old school tactics from the hosts as they pump the ball long whenever they steal it back off the stubborn Toffees. The Blues are coping so far, but they will have to withstand two more minutes of added time - what have Sam Allardyce's boys got left?
90' CHANCE TO WRAP IT UP
Romelu Lukaku has an opportunity to stick a fork in West Ham, but when he tries to cut back beyond James Collins, the Welsh defender does well to readjust. Five minutes remain, and Everton are edging towards their first victory on the road in eleven attempts.
90' SEVEN ADDED MINUTES
There will be SEVEN minutes of stoppage time at Upton Park after that long delay - thankfully both players are fine to continue. The Hammers are down to ten men and look shellshocked, but don't rule anything out in this game!
89' WEST HAM 2-3 EVERTON
He's been an absolute menace in this second half, and he might just have stole all three points for the visitors! Two Belgian's link up as Kevin Mirallas' nicely dinked cross from the right is powered in by the head of Romelu Lukaku. Unfortunately both Lukaku and Joey O'Brien look a bit worse for wear after that and there has been a long delay. Fingers crossed they're both OK.
87' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Romelu Lukaku gives Everton the lead straight after that leveller! Absolute pandemonium at Upton Park!
85' WEST HAM 2-2 EVERTON
Deja vu everywhere you look! West Ham go down to ten men, like they did in this fixture last season, and pay the price. Additionally, Leighton Baines scores another wonderful free-kick! He elects for the opposite corner this time, and it goes in off the post. You can see why Everton dug their heels in to keep the left-back!
84' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Another expertly taken free-kick from Leighton Baines draws Everton level! Many said this one wouldn't be a classic, me included! Not a bit of it!
81' NOBLE SENT OFF
The phrase "from hero to zero" comes to mind. Ross Barkley takes on Mark Noble and advances towards goal, before Noble cynicaly takes him down - that is a second booking and a red card for the midfielder - no complaints.
78' WEST HAM 2-1 EVERTON
Where to start here? First off Mladen Petric, who came on not so long ago, does superbly to chase and harry to keep the ball in, supplying Nolan inside the area. Nolan takes the ball past McCarthy and then dives in the air before hitting the deck. It looks like a clear dive to me, but Lee Mason points to the spot and Noble does the rest! The Toffees will have to go again.
78' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Mark Noble buries the spot kick and the Hammers regain their lead completely against the run of play!
77' PENALTY!
Kevin Nolan buys a penalty for the hosts under pressure from James McCarthy!
75' MOMENTUM LOST
The home side are thankful when Phil Jagielka and Kevin Mirallas clumsily gives the ball away as it helps them to quell the momentum that the Toffees have been building up.
73' HOME SUB
Sam Allardyce decides to switch the pack here, sending on Ricardo Vaz Te for Matt Jarvis. Jarvis can feel hard done by there - he has been the Hammers' best player this afternoon.
71' ALERT KEEPING
That is too easy as far as West Ham are conerned, as Baines and Oviedo play a simple one-two, with the former then releasing a shot that is deflected towards the near top corner. Jaaskelainen does well to tip the ball behind for a corner however.
69' DODGY KEEPING?
Looking at replays of that goal, Jussi Jaaskelainen might think he could have done better with his starting position. He is protecting the wrong post, leaving Baines free to exploit the other side. Take nothing away from Baines though - that was sweet as a nut.
67' HUGE PRESENCE UP TOP
Since coming on Romelu Lukaku has been worrying the Hammers' back four with his size and power. He has half a chance here when Mirallas cuts the ball back to him, but he fires his first time effort wide of the near post. West Ham need to get Matt Jarvis on the ball to take the pressure off here - he looks to be their only outlet.
64' WEST HAM 1-1 EVERTON
Set pieces are like penalties to this man aren't they? West Ham give away a silly free-kick on the edge of the box, and Baines curls the ball right into the far top corner. You won't find many better strikes than that this weekend. All the momentum is with the Toffees now.
63' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Leighton Baines levels matters at Upton Park with a beautiful free-kick - one to add to his ever-growing collection!
60' DESPERATE DEFENDING
A great passage of play from the visitors starts with Lukaku again holding the ball up brilliantly before releasing Barkley. The 19-year-old struggles to get his shot away, but Oviedo picks it up, but his shot is then blocked. The danger still isn't cleared, though, and Lukaku tees up Baines, but his cross is just too high for Mirallas at the back post. West Ham just about survive another onslaught.
57' BRIEF RESPITE
The hosts relieve the pressure for a moment or two as Kevin Nolan bursts forward down the left, but he has no support and quickly loses the ball. It isn't long before normal service is resumed, though, with Everton pouring forward. West Ham will have to weather the storm here.
54' DEFENSIVE DUTIES
The Hammers have barely been able to spring a pass together so far in this second half, but they are defending dilligently inside their own half, and Everton are still looking for the key to unlock the West Ham door. The home fans are in buoyant mood as they realise their side are frustrating their opponents.
52' OVIEDO ON FOR OSMAN
Osman cannot continue and Bryan Oviedo will come on in his place. It looks like he will go out left for the Toffees.
50' ANOTHER CHANGE?
Worrying times for Everton fans here as it looks like Leon Osman will not be able to continue after limping off, meaning they could be forced into making their final substitution with 40 minutes still remaining.
47' INSTANT IMPACT
He's labelled as the next Didier Drogba, and if he carries on like that not many people will be arguing! Lukaku receives the ball with his back to goal, but creates something out of nothing, turning sharply past Reid and releasing Mirallas with a clever reverse ball. Mirallas takes on Jaaskelainen, but the angle becomes too narrow and the chance is gone.
46' SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
The home outfit get this second half started. Roberto Martinez has wasted no time in changing things, sending on Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy for Nikica Jelavic and Steven Naismith respectively.
45' WEST HAM 1-0 EVERTON
As expected the first 45 minutes has been a gritty affair at Upton Park, but it is Sam Allardcye who will be the happier of the two managers going into the break. The first half an hour was relatively even, with the Hammers perhaps shading the balance of play, and it took a dose of fortune for the deadlock to be broken as the highly rated Ravel Morrison's long-range drive deflected off the leg of Jagielka and past Tim Howard in the Everton goal. The visitors responded well to the goal with lots of tidy possession, but they have never really looked like scoring. A word of warning for West Ham fans though - they were 1-0 ahead at this stage in the same fixture last season but ended up losing 2-1. Additionally Roberto Martinez has the wildcard of Romelu Lukaku to come on from the bench to try and bully James Collins and Winston Reid. Join us in a couple of minutes to see how the second half at Upton Park progresses.
45' HAMMERS LEAD AT HALF TIME
After one minute of stoppage time the first period comes to a close, with West Ham going into the interval with a narrow lead.
45' BARKLEY BOOKING
Ross Barkley stamps on the leg of Mohamed Diame and Lee Mason puts the midfielder into the book. Replays make the challenge look very nasty, and if Barkley meant that he should be off. However, it was probably just mistimed, so a caution is all that is needed.
42' CHANCE ON THE TURN
A West Ham corner is only partially cleared and the ball falls for Kevin Nolan who tries the textbook swivel and shoot. Unfortunately for the midfielder Seamus Coleman is alert and blocks the effort - no chicken dance for Nolan just yet.
40' DEFENDING IN NUMBERS
Sam Allardyce is fuming on the touchline, and he has every right to be as it has been all Everton since the goal. He will be very pleased with his side's defending though, as Roberto Martinez's men are playing in front of them at the moment, and struggling to force the breakthrough. Five minutes until the break.
37' BRILLIANT LAST DITCH DEFENDING
Joey O'Brien shows all of his experience here as Ross Barkley breaks at incredible pace from a West Ham corner. It looks like the youngster could be through on goal, but O'Brien's sliding challenge rescues the hosts. This game is beginning to open up now.
35' GOOD RESPONSE
It already looks like being a long way back for the visitors, so organised are Sam Allardyce's men, but they have responded well to that setback, putting a couple of crosses into the Hammers' area. James Collins clears the danger on both occasions though.
32' WEST HAM 1-0 EVERTON
There are many plaudits doing the rounds about this boy, and he has lived up to the reputation with a goal this afternoon. Matt Jarvis, who has been the Hammers' best player so far, cuts inside and feeds the youngster on the edge of the box. His effort is cruelly deflected past the despairing dive of Tim Howard and into the centre of the net.
31' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ravel Morrison gets that goal, and West Ham have the lead!
29' NON-COMMITTAL AFFAIR
I think the best way of describing this match so far is by saying it has been a bit of a cat-and-mouse contest. Both sides look very resolute defensively but short of ideas going forward. Modibo Maiga and Nikica Jelavic are both looking very isolated - a goal will soon change the static nature of this one though.
24' HODGSON ON ENGLAND DUTY
Roy Hodgson is in the stands this afternoon, possibly keeping an eye on the prodigious talent of Ross Barkley. It hasn't been a classic match so far, in fact it has been a tad one-dimensional - right up Hodgson's street then. I really hope he isn't reading this.
22' PATTERN BEING ESTABLISHED
Slowly but surely there is a rhythm beginning to emerge in this match, with the Toffees spreading the ball around the midfield, patiently waiting for the breakthrough, while West Ham are looking to go long to the front men and put the Everton defence under some aerial pressure - an interesting clash of styles.
19' BREAK IN PLAY
Whatever momentum this match had has gone now as Modibo Maiga goes down holding his ankle after a challenge by Gareth Barry. The frontman looks fine to continue, though, and Everton get the game back under way. It is early days still, but I wouldn't expect this one to be top of the bill on Match of the Day tonight.
16' HARD TO BREAK DOWN
You can see why both of these teams have conceded so few goals so far this season - that early Mirallas chance aside there have been very few moments to get excited about. Surprisingly the Hammers are having more of the ball, but Everton have just played their way through the home backline for the first time in the match, but Mirallas' cross was too close to Jaaskelainen.
12' MORE LIVELY THAN LAST TIME
In complete contrast to last weekend, West Ham are looking very lively in this one, putting their opponents under pressure in all areas of the pitch. Jagielka plays a backpass that is just underhit, and Maiga and Jarvis are on to it in a flash, but Tim Howard just about manages to clear for a throw-in.
9' CRUCIAL INTERVENTION
Matt Jarvis is released down the left-hand side for the hosts, and the winger shows excellent pace to escape the attentions of Phil Jagielka, but just as it looks as though he is in on goal Sylvain Distin intervenes and clears for a corner. After a bit of a scramble, the corner is eventually booted clear. Promising signs for both sides so far.
6' CLOSE TO THE FIRST GOAL
Something of the Cristiano Ronaldo in Kevin Mirallas isn't there? The Belgian flyer picks the ball up on the left, and cuts inside before unleashing a fierce shot on goal. Jussi Jaaskelainen does very well to parry his effort, and it is nearly turned in by Steven Naismith on the line. Mirallas looks like he is adopting a shoot-on-site policy thus far.
4' PRESSING HIGH
West Ham will also be aware of the attributes that the visitors bring to the table, and they are working hard so far to stop Roberto Martinez's men having any sustained periods of possession, pressing high up the field with a lot of pressure on the Everton midfield. No openings to speak of as of yet.
2' SOMETHING TO LOOK OUT FOR
The Toffees will know exactly what they are in for this afternoon inside of their own area, and West Ham take an early opportunity to put their opponents under pressure with a long free-kick right into the danger zone. Everton deal with it well though.
1' KICK OFF
Lee Mason blows his whistle and we are underway at Upton Park- it is Everton, kicking from left to right, who get us kicked off.

0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sam Allardyce is short of forward options ahead of this afternoon's clash as Andy Carroll is still absent with a heel injury, while Mladen Petric is not considered to be match fit. Midfielders Joe Cole and Stewart Downing will also miss today's match with hamstring and leg complaints respectively, and George McCartney is still struggling with a knee injury. Deadline day loan signing Romelu Lukaku is set for his first game in an Everton shirt for the visitors, while fellow striker Arouna Kone looks probable to return to the squad. Darron Gibson could be back to play his first game of the campaign, with his fellow midfielder Steven Pienaar rated as 50-50 for the match at Upton Park. Antolin Alcaraz is a definite absentee for the Toffees as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem.
0' REF WATCH
Today's referee will be Lancashire's Lee Mason, as the 41-year-old takes charge of his third match of the season. In his previous two games, Mason has given out a healthy eight bookings, but has yet to send anybody off, meaning he has a card average of four yellow cards per match so far this campaign. Interestingly enough, two players were sent off in this exact fixture last year, as Carlton Cole and Darron Gibson were both controversially dismissed for high kicking – actually that's not the most fascinating stat in the world, but it's all I've got so make the most of it.
0' EVERTON HARD AS TOFFEE
They may not have been banging in the goals so far this campaign, but Everton can boast some pretty impressive statistics as we enter the fifth week of the season. The Blues have gone unbeaten in their first four matches in the league for the first time since 2006, while they have kept a whopping eight clean sheets in their last eleven games in England's top division. On the flip side, the Toffees are winless in their last ten matches on the road in the Premier League, their last victory coming all the way back in January against Newcastle. When you haven't won away from home in eight months, Upton Park is hardly the easiest place to go to if you want to collect three points – tika-taka football will not be enough for Roberto Martinez's men this afternoon – they will have to roll their sleeves up and battle hard if they are to claim a full share of the spoils.
0' HAMMERS' HORRIFYING HEAD TO HEAD
As we all know, any team that plays under the management of Sam Allardyce tend to be as hard as nails, but their recent performances against the Toffees have been decidedly timid – they have not emerged victorious in any of their last ten league meetings with the Blues, losing six of those encounters. They have lost four of their last five matches against Everton at Upton Park, and have only beaten today's opponents just once since 2002. Additionally the Hammers have had a man sent off in two of their last three meetings against Roberto Martinez's men. When you consider the fact that West Ham haven't scored in over 270 minutes of action and lost their last home league match, you sense this could be a long afternoon for Big Sam's men.
0' PREVIEW
Any football fan will tell you that the best thing about our beautiful sport is the sight of the ball hitting the back of the net. I don't mean to sound negative, but the likelihood of that occurring on a regular basis this afternoon is somewhat slim given the defensive solidity both West Ham and Everton have displayed so far this season. West Ham haven't scored in their last three Premier League games and have only let in one goal, while Everton have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league, but have only mustered three goals in four games thus far. Both sides have lacked cutting edge, but have displayed admirable defensive organisation, which seems to indicate a lack of goals at Upton Park today. However, football is anything but predictable, so join us at 15:00 for live text commentary of the match – it could be a belter.
