Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: TOTTENHAM 1 CHELSEA 1
Ten-man Chelsea come from a goal down to snatch a point after an impressive second-half display at White Hart Lane. Their leveller came from John Terry on 65 minutes, the Blues skipper heading home with half-time substitute Juan Mata supplying the assist via a well-directed free-kick. Oscar and Fernando Torres had both gone close for the visitors before they finally became only the second side to pierce the Spurs defence this season. Andre Schurrle was then denied a winner after a fabulous save by Hugo Lloris. Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was harshly sent off in the closing stages for what referee Mike Dean deemed to be a second bookable offence. Tottenham had dominated the first half and taken a deserved lead on 19 minutes, Gylfi Sigurdsson finishing impressively for his third goal of the season after some excellent play in the build-up by Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado. The point is enough to take Spurs top for now, but Arsenal and Manchester City can overhaul them later in the day.
90' LAMPARD NEEDS TREATMENT
Lampard needs treatment on what looks like an ankle injury after a clash in midfield. Time is almost up.
90' WELL OVER THE TOP
Chadli, who has barely made an impression since coming on, shoots well over the bar from 25 yards.
90' NOT FAR AWAY
Defoe tries a snap-shot from 20 yards that hits a Chelsea defender and flies past the right-hand upright.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be four minutes of added time.
88' SO CLOSE TO A WINNER
Sigurdsson is inches away from netting a winner, his long-range dipping shot flying past the post with Cech rooted to the spot.
86' DEFOE DENIED
The skilful Demble carves out a chance for Defoe, whose scuffed shot is saved easily by Cech.
83' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Mourinho responds to the dismissal by withdrawing Oscar and throwing on another defender, Cesar Azpilicueta.
82' TORRES SENT OFF
Torres and Vertonghen both end up on the floor after another clash. Mr Dean takes a long time to think and decides to show Torres a second yellow card. He's off, that was very harsh!
80' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Dembele is cautioned for a cynical trip on Mata.
79' GREAT SAVE BY LLORIS
Chelsea are so close to taking the lead. Lloris makes a superb save to deny Schurrle, who had been put clear by the excellent Torres.
77' TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTION
Spurs' final change sees Roberto Soldado replaced by Jermain Defoe.
76' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Another yellow card, this time for Dawson after chopping down Torres.
73' UNDER PRESSURE?
When Jose Mourinho was sacked as Chelsea manager on Sep. 20, 2007, his side had won three, drawn two and lost one of their six matches in the Premier League. A draw today and Chelsea's record after six games would read: won three, drawn two and lost one. Worried, Jose?
70' CHANGES FOR BOTH TEAMS
Andre Schurrle replaces Eden Hazard for Chelsea. Lewis Holtby takes the place of Eriksen for Tottenham.
68' SEARCHING FOR THE WIN
Chelsea break swiftly. Mata finds Oscar on the left and his ball into the unmarked Torres just lacks the necessary pace, allowing Vertonghen to clear.
66' MORE ON THAT GOAL
That equaliser has been coming. Mata curled in an inch-perfect free-kick and the Chelsea captain headed home from ten yards, giving Lloris no chance.
65' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 1 CHELSEA 1
John Terry heads Chelsea level.
65' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Ramires is caught by a late tackle by Vertonghen and that is the clearest caution so far today.
64' GIVE US A GOAL
Only one of Chelsea's last 25 league goals has been scored by a recognised striker, Fernando Torres against Everton in May. Some people might argue that Torres is barely recognisable as a striker any more, but we'll save that argument for another day.
63' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Spurs make their first change with Naser Chadli taking the place of Townsend, who was good in the first half, but not quite so in the second.
62' FINAL WARNING
Another confrontation between Torres and Vertonghen sees the referee speak to both players.
61' EASY FOR LLORIS
A mis-kick from Mata falls at the feet of Hazard, but his tame shot is easily dealt with by Lloris.
60' CHELSEA BOOKING
Ivanovic is cautioned by the referee for dissent. The match official also tells Chelsea skipper John Terry to calm down his defensive colleague.
58' GOAL DISALLOWED
Mata has the ball in the net, but the flag had been up for a while for offside, which he clearly was after collecting the chest-down from Torres.
56' NAUGHTY FERNANDO
Having looked at that flare-up between Torres and Vertonghen again, the Chelsea man could easily have been dismissed for raising his arms at the Tottenham defender. Was it sufficient for the FA to act retrospectively with video evidence? We'll wait and see with interest.
54' MAGNIFICENT FROM TORRES
Torres is a man on a mission at present. He goes on a weaving run through the Spurs defence and is only denied by a sprawling save from Lloris. That was more like the player of three or four years ago.
52' CHELSEA BOOKING
Vertonghen takes exception to a trip by Torres as the two players chase towards the bye-line. Torres is cautioned for the original offence. That was simply daft as the ball was running out for a Chelsea corner.
51' ENGLAND EXPECTS
England manager Roy Hodgson is watching from the stands today. Andros Townsend has done his chances no harm at all so far, especially with Arsenal's Theo Walcott sidelined for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
49' BEST CHANCE SO FAR
Chelsea should be level. Torres does magnificently to beat Vertonghen down the right. His low cross looks for Oscar, who just cannot wrap his left leg round the ball and the chance is spurned.
47' A REAL DANGER MAN
Mata scored twice on this ground last season. Spurs have reason to be fearful.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Spurs get the second half under way. Chelsea have made a change at the break, with Juan Mata replacing Mikel.
45' HT: TOTTENHAM 1 CHELSEA 0
Tottenham lead at the break and thoroughly deserve their advantage. A tight match burst into life on 20 minutes with the home side going in front following an excellent move. A turn from Christian Eriksen left his man for dead, the Dane found Roberto Soldado in the box and he teed up Gylfi Sigurdsson, who hurdled a tackle from John Terry before finishing neatly in the corner. Paulinho could have added a second soon after, but for a saving tackle by Branislav Ivanovic. The Brazilian also shot against the outside of a post right on half-time. Chelsea have been hugely disappointing. They've not been lacking in commitment, but their numerous flair players have created very little going forward. Their best chance of getting back into this match looks to be via a set-piece.
45' JUST OVER FROM TERRY
Chelsea are not far away in stoppage time, Terry bulleting a header just over from a Ramires cross.
45' SPURS BOOKING
A cynical foul by Eriksen earns the Spurs midfielder the second caution of the game.
45' VOLLEY ON TARGET
Hazard collects a headed clearance from Dawson but his volley is straight at Lloris.
44' SPURS BOOKING
Townsend is shown the first yellow card of the day for taking a dive trying to earn a foul near the halfway line. Mr Dean has finally run out of patience.
43' TORRES THREATENS
Mikel floats a perfectly-weighted ball forward for Torres, who is dispossessed by the player of the first half, Vertonghen.
41' WALKER ROBBED
Walker is caught dozing by Hazard at the back and the Belgian's fierce strike is deflected wide by Vertonghen for a corner.
39' SOLDADO IN THE WARS
Chelsea are doing their best to wind Soldado up here. This time a challenge from Terry leaves the Spurs striker furious.
37' IMPORTANT CLEARANCE
Vertonghen has impressed at the heart of the Spurs defence today. He stretches his neck muscles to get in an important headed clearance with Terry lurking behind him at a left-wing corner.
35' A DISH BEST SERVED COLD
Luiz catches Soldado with a nasty challenge. The former Valencia man looks daggers at his opponent and his expression suggests he may try for retribution later in the game.
33' RAMIRES FRUSTRATED
Ramires kicks the ball away in frustration, but is spared a yellow card by Dean. Presumably the referee's thinking is that the Brazilian is wasting his own time with Chelsea currently behind.
30' TAME SHOT FROM NAUGHTON
Eriksen is at the heart of the action again. He plays a ball back for Naughton, whose low drive from 25 yards is on target but lacks the venom to trouble Cech.
27' DEMBELE NEEDS TREATMENT
A sliding tackle from Hazard catches Dembele on the right ankle. The Spurs midfielder is down and looks in some pain.
24' IVANOVIC RESCUES BLUES
It's all Spurs. Townsend and Soldado combine superbly and only a last-ditch tackle from Ivanovic prevents Paulinho adding a second.
23' SHORT OF GOALS
Chelsea have netted just six goals from their opening five matches, their joint-lowest total at this stage of the season for 18 years.
20' MORE ON THAT GOAL
A good-looking goal for the home side. Eriksen turned his man outside the area and dropped a ball at the feet of Soldado, whose touch pass found Sigurdsson and he finished expertly into the corner.
19' GOAL: SPURS 1 CHELSEA 0
Gylfi Sigurdsson gives Tottenham the lead.
18' AERIAL THREAT
If Les Ferdinand is watching this match, I bet he wishes he was still Tottenham's No.9. Big Les would have a field day with these inch-perfect high balls into the area from Spurs playmaker Eriksen.
17' TORRES FAR FROM HAPPY
Torres goes down on the edge of the area looking for a free-kick which is not forthcoming. Cue ironic applause from the Spaniard behind the referee's back.
15' SHOOT ON SIGHT
Five games into the Premier League season, Tottenham have averaged the most shots per game (21) and allowed the fewest shots by the opposition (seven). Any wonder why AVB's men have made such an impressive start to the 2013-14 campaign?
13' VITAL CHALLENGE
Eriksen plays in a good-looking free-kick from the left. Vertonghen rises high, but is unable to direct his header goalwards. That was a passable chance. Vertonghen then makes a vital challenge to rob Ramires at the other end.
11' TREATMENT FOR HAZARD
Hazard gets treatment on his Achilles after Walker's boot accidentally raked down the back of his leg following an aerial challenge.
9' WIDE FROM LAMPARD
Back come Chelsea. Torres plays the ball back to Lampard, who hooks a left-foot shot well over from the edge of the box.
8' PAULINHO SLICES WIDE
Does that count as our first shot? Paulinho lets fly from 25 yards, the ball slices off his right foot and ends up 15 rows back and nearer to the corner flag than the goal.
7' FULL OF RUNNING
When Ramires hurt his hip at Swindon in midweek there looked no chance he would recover in time for today. He may not have trained since, but the Brazilian looks full of running today.
5' FIRST TOUCH LACKING
Eriksen delivers a great low pass forward to Soldado, whose first touch deserts him or that could have been a shooting opportunity on the edge of the area.
3' CORNER WASTED
Branislav Ivanovic concedes the first corner of the match. Eriksen delivers from the left, but that is catching practice for Cech. That's a waste.
2' BEST OF ENEMIES
Villas-Boas really seems to have got under the skin of Jose Mourinho ahead of this game. The Chelsea boss gave monosyllabic answers to any questions about his former assistant and there was a real feeling of bitterness to his replies. There, was, however, a handshake between the two before kick-off.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' TEAM NEWS
Tottenham name exactly the same side that won at Cardiff, while Chelsea make three changes to the team that beat Fulham. David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres replace Gary Cahill, Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o. So Ramires has passed a fitness test and Juan Mata is only on the bench again.
0' PREVIEW
Meetings between Tottenham and Chelsea never need any building up. The locking of horns between two of the top flight's biggest clubs invariably produces a pulsating encounter and not the negative stalemate we sometimes see between other clubs in the upper echelon. Add to this mix the fact that this is a London derby and that a win for either would take them top of the table for a few hours. But wait, there is more. In the rival dugouts are Andre Villas-Boas, the former Chelsea manager now in charge of Spurs and Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager now back in charge at the Bridge. AVB worked under the Special One for seven years at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but decided to go his own way when overlooked for a promotion. “Our relationship has broken down,” Villas-Boas said candidly on Friday. “I think we have the mutual respect for each other and we understand what we have been through cannot just disappear, but it's not like it was before.” Chelsea's 4-2 win at Tottenham 11 months ago was as good as it got for them in the league in 2012-13, completing an eight-game unbeaten run from the start of the season. The following weekend they were controversially beaten at home by Manchester United which prompted a run which saw them slip off top spot, a position they never regained. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
With all due respect to the other members of the Tottenham squad, Spurs were pretty much a one-man team last season. Now, without Gareth Bale, they are more a sum of their parts and look the stronger for it. They are capable of scoring goals from anywhere, and Paulinho and Gylfi Sigurdsson have highlighted what a dangerous midfield they have by netting in recent matches. Someone who needs a goal, though, is Roberto Soldado. Despite netting four times in his first three Spurs starts, he's looked a little out of sorts in recent weeks. The chances have been coming, but he hasn't quite seemed like the natural finisher who netted 28 goals in all competitions for Valencia last season. With strike rival Jermain Defoe (two goals in midweek) looking sharp he needs to raise his game a notch or risk spending some time on the bench. Chelsea have not really been setting the world alight, but if would be fascinating mind games from Mourinho if he handed a start to the out-of-favour Juan Mata. The Spaniard was brought to Stamford Bridge by Villas-Boas, who made an inquiry about his availability in the summer.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 54 wins to 43 by Tottenham and 33 games being drawn. There has been little to choose between the sides at White Hart Lane, Spurs have 24 wins to 23 by Chelsea, with a further 18 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding meeting between the sides last season on Oct. 20 saw the Blues win 4-2. Gary Cahill gave the visitors a 17th-minute lead, only for Spurs to go in front with two goals in seven minutes early in the season half from William Gallas and Jermain Defoe. An incredible match then turned back in Chelsea's favour with a quickfire double-strike from Juan Mata (66 and 69 minutes) before Daniel Sturridge sealed the points with a fourth in the final minute. The return at Stamford Bridge on May 5 finished in a 2-2 draw. Oscar (11) and Ramires (39) twice put Chelsea in front, but Spurs hit back through Emmanuel Adebayor (26) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (80). Tottenham have failed to beat Chelsea in six attempts. Spurs did win three of the eight prior to that, the first of those victories ending a run of 32 without a win over the Blues.
0' FORM GUIDE
Tottenham are second with 12 points, they have won four of five in the league, including an injury-time victory at Cardiff last time out. Chelsea are fourth, two points behind, having recorded an unconvincing 2-0 home win over Fulham last Saturday. Tottenham boast the best defensive record in any of the five major European leagues, having conceded just one goal in five games. They are one of just two clubs in the top flight (today's opponents are the other) who still have yet to drop a point at home. Spurs have lost just one of their last 15 at White Hart Lane, to Fulham on Mar. 13. Chelsea are just one of two sides in the top half of the table (Manchester City are the other) yet to win away from home.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Danny Rose should return at left-back for Spurs having recovered from a toe injury. Younes Kaboul (adductor) and Aaron Lennon (foot) face fitness tests and Etienne Capoue (ankle) and Emmanuel Adebayor (illness) are definitely out. Chelsea's Brazilian midfielder Ramires is a doubt after injuring his hip in the League Cup win at Swindon in midweek. Marco van Ginkel is out for six months after undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee, who was the match official for this corresponding fixture last season, has shown 14 yellow cards in his three matches to date this season. With 102 cautions in 28 games last season, his 3.64 cautions-per-game average ranked him third in terms of strictness behind only Kevin Friend and Martin Atkinson. Dean's assistants today are Jake Collin and John Brooks, while Roger East is the fourth official.
