Sunderland vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SUNDERLAND 1 MAN UTD 2
An 18-year-old by the name of Adnam Januzaj comes to the rescue of David Moyes and Manchester United with two second half goals to earn victory at bottom club Sunderland. The Belgian netted on 55 and 61 minutes with two expert finishes, one a first-time right-footed effort and the other an even more impressive left-footed volley. For a while it looked as though Sunderland were going to record their first win of the season and hand United a third successive league defeat for the first time in 12 years. The Black Cats took the lead on five minutes, Craig Gardner pouncing on a poor clearance by Nemanja Vidic to fire home. A magnificent save by David de Gea when the score was 1-0 proved pivotal, the Spaniard diving full-length to his right to keep out a header from Emanuele Giaccherini.
90' LAST CHANCE SALOON
Sunderland win a late corner and this is likely their last chance. Sunderland goalkeeper Westwood almost gets on the end of the set-piece, but opposite number De Gea clears the danger.
90' SPIRITED FIGHT BUT NO REWARD
It's been a spirited display by Sunderland, but they've just not done enough in the attacking third of the field in this second half.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of five minutes of added time.
89' WHAT A MISS FROM RVP
Van Persie is put clean through by Valencia, but shoots wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. David Moyes has his head in his hands.
88' ROONEY GETS A KNOCK
Rooney is down momentarily with an injury to his right ankle. He gets up and limps on, but this will be of concern to England manager Roy Hodgson.
86' MAN UTD SUBSTITUTION
United make their final switch, with Chris Smalling coming on for Rafael, who appears to have a muscular injury.
84' STILL HOPE FOR SUNDERLAND
The substitutes have breathed a little life into Sunderland. Larsson's excellent first-time pass into the box is expertly dealt with by Vidic.
82' MAN UTD BOOKING
A cynical challenge from O'Shea takes out Welbeck in full flight and that is the clearest caution of the night so far.
79' MAN UTD BOOKING
Rafael is cautioned for a bodycheck on Colback, Mr Foy being forced to walk 50 yards to brandish his yellow card.
77' MAN UTD SUBSTITUTIONS
United make a double change, with Danny Welbeck and Antonio Valencia replacing Nani and goal-scoring hero Januzaj.
75' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland's final change sees Connor Wickham replace Ji.
73' WELL OVER FROM ROONEY
Rooney collects a low ball by Rafael into the near post and shoots well over the angle of post and bar.
71' MAN UTD BOOKING
Nemanja Vidic has been less than impressive today and he blots his copy book further by picking up a caution for a foul.
70' HATS OFF TO MOYES
You have to give David Moyes credit for handing the youngster his first Premier League start. Many managers would go for the safe option when their side was going through a rough patch and plump for experience.
66' HISTORY MAKERS
The last team to win the top-flight title after having lost three of their first six games was Portsmouth in 1949-50. Little wonder United have drifted out to fourth favourite with the bookies to win this season's Premier League.
64' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland's second change sees Ji replace Adam Johnson.
62' MORE ON THAT GOAL
What a cracking finish from the youngster. A cross came in from the right and O'Shea's clearing header fell at the feet of Januzaj, who volleyed the dropping ball into the corner. That was Van Persie-like in its brilliance.
61' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 MAN UTD 2
Adnan Januzaj nets again and United are in front.
60' HIGH FIVES
It's been all the fives so far today. Gardner opened the scoring on five minutes, Januzaj levelled after 55. What chance a winner five minutes into stoppage time?
59' SEARCHING FOR A SECOND
United almost snatch the lead. Evra is instrumental again, crossing low from the left and Van Persie's first-time shot forces Westwood into a save.
57' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sebastian Larsson replaces the hard-working Gardner for Sunderland.
56' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The visitors level from nowhere. Evra crossed from the left and the young Belgian directed a right-footed shot into the corner, giving Westwood no chance.
55' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 MAN UTD 1
Adnan Januzaj levels for United.
54' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Mr Foy books Gardner for handball, with Cattermole lucky not to follow his team-mate for dissent.
52' TIGHT AT THE BACK
With Fulham beating Stoke 1-0 earlier, Sunderland are now just one of two Premier League teams without a clean sheet this season. Crystal Palace are the other.
49' MAN UTD BOOKING
Januzaj dives in the box looking for a penalty and is rightly cautioned for simulation.
48' CHANGES NEEDED
It would be no surprise to see Danny Welbeck make an early entrance in this second half. He would make a foil for Van Persie with Rooney dropping just behind the front two. Any number of players would be candidates to get the hook, but Cleverley would be my call to make way.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United get the second half under way.
45' HT: SUNDERLAND 1 MAN UTD 0
Sunderland lead at the break and the worrying thing for United fans is that the bottom club deserve their lead. They took the game to the brittle champions and grabbed the advantage on five minutes, Craig Gardner firing home after a defensive lapse by Nemanja Vidic. The margin could have been even greater, but David De Gea made a sensational save to palm away a header from Emanuele Giaccherini. We've seen little of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney and the best United chance fell to Nani, who volleyed wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
44' GOLDEN CHANCE WASTED
Johnson does wonderfully well to evade a couple of tackles on the left before pulling the ball back for Giaccherini, who lifts a shot from near the penalty spot into the crowd.
42' MAN UTD BOOKING
Rooney trips Gardner from behind and is shown his second yellow card of the season.
40' STINGING DRIVE
Nani stings the fingertips of Westwood with a vicious drive towards the near post, but the Sunderland goalkeeper would have been disappointed had that one beaten him.
38' HARD TO HANDLE
Giaccherini waves an imaginary card, imploring referee Chris Foy to produce the yellow card for Patrice Evra's handball. The Italian has been in fine form tonight, but we don't want to see that in the Premier League.
36' A NEED TO IMPROVE
The one Sunderland player yet to impress has been Jozy Altitore. He looks a yard off the pace and not on the same wavelength as the rest of his team.
35' GREAT SAVE FROM DE GEA
Johnson crosses from the left and the unmarked Giaccherini bullets a header goalwards. De Gea flies to his right to make a blinding save.
31' HALF A CHANCE FOR ROONEY
A moment of hesitation from O'Shea in the Sunderland area almost lets in Rooney, but defensive partner Roberge snuffs out the danger.
28' WORKING TIRELESSLY
Sunderland are working tigerishly in midfield and Lee Cattermole typifies exactly the kind of effort that Kevin Ball wants to see from his side tonight.
27' UNHAPPY HUNTING GROUND
Who was the last opposing manager to taste defeat against Sunderland? David Moyes, of course, with Everton at the Stadium of Light on Apr. 20.
24' AMBITIOUS STRIKE
Januzaj carries the ball from deep and shoots from 30 yards, but Westwood sees that effort all the way and gathers easily.
22' POOR VOLLEY FROM NANI
United should be level. A cross from the left by Evra evades everybody and finds the unmarked Nani beyond the far post. He volleys wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. That was a dismal effort.
20' WASTED FREE-KICK
Vidic fells Altitore with a lunging tackle 21 yards from goal. Giaccherini fancies the free-kick but his effort strikes the top of the wall.
18' GETTING CLOSER
Januzaj turns superbly and lets fly with a right-footed shot that whistles past the post. The youngster has been United's liveliest player so far.
15' ALERT DEFENDING
Van Persie causes Sunderland some problems inside their penalty area, but O'Shea is alert to the danger and cuts out a pass intended for Rooney.
12' DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
United hardly set the world alight in the early days of Sir Alex Ferguson either. They won just one of their first six under the great man, losing to Oxford and Wimbledon, who were hardly perennial top-flight title-chasers.
10' LUCKY ESCAPE FOR JONES
Phil Jones is caught in possession deep in his own half and gifts Sunderland a three-on-one break. Gardner dithers, not knowing whether to shoot or pass and the delay allows Jones to get back and atone for his error.
8' NANI GOES CLOSE
Nani lets fly from 25 yards. It's two feet wide of the left-hand upright, but Westwood was worried about that one judging by the way the goalkeeper threw himself across his goal.
6' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a nightmare for United. Giaccherini played in a low cross from the right, Jones cleared to the feet of Vidic, who simply gave the ball on a plate to Gardner and he steered a shot beyond De Gea into the far corner.
5' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 MAN UTD 0
Craig Gardner gives Sunderland a shock lead!
2' UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY
If United lose today, it will be four defeats in their first seven league games. The game number when they suffered their fourth defeat in the previous ten seasons (most recent first): 31st match, 33rd, 35th, 16th, 29th, 26th, 32nd, 24th, 33rd and 22nd.
1' HERE WE GO
Sunderland kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney starts alongside Robin van Persie for United, who show seven changes to the side beaten at home by West Brom last weekend. There is no place among the 18 for either Rio Ferdinand or Marouane Fellaini. Sunderland interim head coach Kevin Ball makes two changes, Ondrej Celustka and Valentin Roberge replacing Carlos Cuellar and Sebastian Larsson.
0' PREVIEW
Sunderland might be bottom of the table and without a manager, but you could argue there is a bigger crisis enveloping the club who visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Nobody expected David Moyes' succession of Sir Alex Ferguson to be entirely without the odd stumble here or there, but few would have predicted Manchester United would be lying in 12th place entering the current round of fixtures, having lost three of their opening six games and trailing leaders Arsenal by eight points. Sunderland gave an improved showing against Liverpool last weekend, albeit in a losing cause. Black Cats and former United defender John O'Shea, though, says it is time for the players to stand up and be counted. He told the Sunderland Echo: “The positives don't count for anything. Believe me, anyone in the dressing room would rather play terrible and win the games 1-0. The players need to get this home crowd behind us and give them something to cheer about, rather than them having to get us going all the time.” Interim head coach Kevin Ball will once again take charge of the team for the United game, his third at the helm since Sunderland dispensed with the services of Paolo Di Canio on September 22. United have a magnificent record against the Black Cats and a fourth defeat of the season so early in the campaign is simply unthinkable. Today's game kicks off at 1730BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Four goals in six games makes Sunderland the joint lowest scorers in the division. There has not been much for supporters to cheer in the attacking third of the field, though interim head coach Kevin Ball said this week he had been impressed with former Juventus forward Emanuele Giaccherini, who scored against Liverpool last weekend, following up and netting from a rebound offered up by Simon Mignolet. “That's something I'm a big believer in,” Ball told the Sunderland Echo. “If you're a defender, follow in on your keeper to support him, and if you're an attacker, follow in on shots because you never know. Sometimes the easiest opportunities are when you follow in on the keeper and for whatever reason he can't keep hold of the ball.” With Wayne Rooney's participation unclear, Robin van Persie will carry the major goalscoring threat for the visitors. The Dutchman has netted 30 goals in 47 Premier League and FA Cup games for United, but interestingly, only two goals in seven appearances the weekend following after a Champions League fixture in which he has featured.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 55 wins to 37 by Sunderland and 28 games being drawn. At the Stadium of Light and Roker Park before it, Sunderland have 26 wins to 20 by United, with a further 14 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Mar. 3 saw United win 1-0 courtesy of a 27th-minute own goal from Titus Bramble. That completed the double for United, who had won 3-1 at Old Trafford in December with goals from Robin van Persie (16 minutes), Tom Cleverley (19) and Wayne Rooney (59), Fraizer Campbell netting a consolation for the visitors. United have won the last five meetings in the league and are unbeaten in the last 22. The last Sunderland victory came in March 1997, their only success in the Premier League era.
0' FORM GUIDE
Sunderland start the day bottom of the table with one point from their opening six games and three defeats out of three at home. Dating back to last season they are winless in ten and have won just two of their last 21. United find themselves languishing in 12th place with seven points, eight adrift of leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils will be looking to avoid suffering a third successive Premier League defeat for the first time in 12 years.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sunderland have striker Fabio Borini back in their squad, the on-loan Italian having been ineligible to face parent club Liverpool last weekend. Steven Fletcher (shoulder), Wes Brown (calf) and Andrea Dossena (thigh) remain out. Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for United, having missed the midweek Champions League draw in Donetsk with a shin problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Chris Foy, who has been on the select list of referees since 2001. The Merseyside official has only been given two Premier League appointments before today, showing a total of five yellow cards. Sunderland have reason to remember his last trip to Wearside in March with fondness, as he harshly dismissed Norwich goalkeeper Mark Bunn for handling outside his box. Foy also awarded the Black Cats a debatable penalty in that match, while denying Norwich a more obvious spot-kick of their own after adjudging Danny Rose handled outside the area rather than inside. Foy's assistants today are Andy Garratt and Stuart Burt, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
