Newcastle United vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: NEWCASTLE 2 LIVERPOOL 2
A goal 18 minutes from time by Daniel Sturridge rescues a point for Liverpool against the ten-man Toon. The England forward headed home from close range after superb play in the build-up by Luis Suarez and Victor Moses. Newcastle had taken a 24th-minute lead through Yohan Cabaye's magnificent long-range strike, but they were undone just before half-time when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa hauled down Suarez in the area and was shown the red card. Steven Gerrard equalised with the resulting penalty, his 100th goal in the Premier League. The home side made light of the numerical disadvantage, outplaying their opponents at the start of the second half and taking a deserved lead from 22-year-old Welshman Paul Dummett, who had only come on as defensive cover after the sending off. Liverpool, though, piled on the pressure in the latter stages and will feel a little disappointed not to have collected all three points.
90' KRUL SAVES THE DAY
Suarez wins Liverpool a free-kick right on the edge of the area. This is an excellent opportunity for the visitors, but the Uruguayan sees his shot brilliantly saved by Krul diving to his left.
90' LAST CHANCE SALOON
Luis Alberto shoots well over from outside the box and with it may have gone Liverpool's last chance of victory.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into four minutes of added time.
90' SAVING HEADER
Sturridge gets clear down the left and lifts a hopeful ball over Krul looking for a team-mate in the middle, only for Debuchy to make an excellent clearing header.
87' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Debuchy hacks down Moses and is the latest man into Mr Marriner's notebook.
86' BAD MISS BY STURRIDGE
Gerrard picks out Sturridge with another magnificent crossfield pass, but the England striker volleys wide of the target from only six yards.
84' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Sturridge is cautioned for a sliding tackle on Gouffran that got man and not ball.
83' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Another Jordan Henderson long-range effort clears the bar by a distance. The visitors replace Glen Johnson with Raheem Sterling, another bold move.
79' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
A double change for Newcastle. Sammy Ameobi and Vernun Anita replace Cabaye and Ben Arfa.
77' WASTEFUL FROM STURRIDGE
Newcastle survive again. Moses brings down a cross beyond the far post, but Sturridge's finishing deserts him as he shoots wide from ten yards.
76' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Liverpool are rampant now. Gerrard slides in Cissokho down the left and his pull-back is met by a searing shot from Suarez that clips the top of the crossbar.
75' FLAG SAVES STURRIDGE BLUSHES
Sturridge misses from only six yards out and is thankful the flag had gone up for offside.
74' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a quality goal from the visitors. Suarez played a lovely one-two with Moses down the left and unselfishly squared the ball to Sturridge, who bulleted a header into the net from close range.
73' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 2 LIVERPOOL 2
Daniel Sturridge levels for Liverpool.
72' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Toure is cautioned for a poor tackle on Remy.
71' LOW SHOT BLOCKED
Suarez latches on to a pass from the right and shoots low, but Krul is well positioned to block the effort.
70' HEADER LOOPS OVER
Moses finds some space to get on the end of a right-wing Gerrard corner, but his header loops disappointingly over the bar.
69' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Gouffran is cautioned for a lunging tackle on Cissokho, again a little harsh from the referee.
68' MOMENT OF PANIC
Gerrard's dipping cross causes palpitations inside the Newcastle defence, but they escape as Krul gathers the loose ball.
65' MUST DO BETTER
Henderson collects a pass from Johnson 25 yards out, but his lobbed effort comfortably clears the bar. Poor from a man who cost a staggering 16 million pounds (25.8 million US dollars).
64' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Liverpool make a change. Luis Alberto comes on for Sakho.
63' WORKING TIRELESSLY
Newcastle have been so good in this second half, it's easy to forget they are down to ten men.
62' TOURE WITH THE ASSIST
Correction. Looking again at the replay Williamson was nowhere near supplying the assist for the Dummett goal. It actually flicked off the head of Liverpool defender Kolo Toure.
60' RED CARDS APLENTY
It's the fourth successive match between these sides in which we've seen a red card. Newcastle have had the last three players dismissed and before that Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina set the ball rolling.
58' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Boy, oh boy, ten-man Newcastle are in front, what a shock! Cabaye floated in a free-kick from the left, Williamson flicked it on and the young substitute stole in to steer a shot past Mignolet.
57' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 2 LIVERPOOL 1
Paul Dummett scores for Newcastle!
55' WELL OVER FROM MOSES
Moses tries his luck with a 25-yarder, but he's no Johan Cabaye and the ball ends up in the stands. Tiote was caught in the chest by the follow-through from the former Wigan man, but he's a tough cookie and is fine to continue.
53' SKRTEL'S SAVING TACKLE
Cabaye slides in a ball to put Remy clean through, but Skrtel makes a magnificent saving tackle. Had he got that wrong, it would have been another penalty and red card.
52' GERRARD WALKING A TIGHTROPE
The crowd bays for a second yellow card for Gerrard after a collision with Tiote, but Mr Marriner rightly awards just the free-kick.
50' KRUL KEPT BUSY
Henderson's excellent crossfield pass picks out Johnson in an advanced position. The full-back cuts inside and shoots left-footed for the bottom corner. Krul saves, though it might have hit the post rather than sneaked in.
48' FREE-SCORING REDS
Liverpool have now found the net in 16 of their last 17 away games, the one blemish being the goalless draw with Reading last April.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: NEWCASTLE 1 LIVERPOOL 1
It's all square as that sending off and Liverpool's penalty equaliser just before the break have turned the game on its head. Newcastle had taken a deserved lead thanks to a magnificent long-range strike from Yohan Cabaye on 23 minutes. The Frenchman was allowed to run from halfway before unleashing a wickedly dipping strike that nestled in the corner beyond the despairing dive of Simon Mignolet. Liverpool had been ordinary, but they were handed a lifeline five minutes before the break when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa hauled down Luis Suarez and was sent off for a professional foul. Steven Gerrard levelled with the resulting penalty, his 100th goal in the Premier League.
45' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Gerrard is booked for a poor challenge on Cabaye. A little harsh from Mr Marriner, that one.
45' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Newcastle make a change, with Sissoko making way for Paul Dummett.
43' WAY OVER FROM GERRARD
Liverpool go looking for a second, but Gerrard skies his effort from the edge of the box way over the crossbar.
42' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 1 LIVERPOOL 1
Steven Gerrard nets from the spot, his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool. The visitors are level.
40' RED CARD AND PENALTY
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is sent off for a professional foul on Suarez and Liverpool have a penalty.
39' GREAT SAVE BY KRUL
Newcastle give the ball away and almost concede the equaliser as a result. Williamson gets a toe to Suarez's shot, taking a little of the venom off the effort and allowing Krul to make an excellent save.
39' SUAREZ STRUGGLING
Suarez is grimacing with what could be a lower back or hip injury. It's unlikely that he will need treatment, though.
38' SISSOKO DENIED
Moussa Sissoko lets fly with a thumping left-foot shot from 25 yards that is beaten down at his near post by Mignolet.
35' CABAYE LOOKS FOR ANOTHER
Ever the optimist, Cabaye tries again with a 30-yard swerver that is not too far from a spectacular second.
32' NEW ORANGE BOOTS
Daniel Sturridge goes off the pitch to get new footwear. The England man waits on the sidelines waiting for them to arrive from the dressing room and is still a spectator as Liverpool win a corner.
29' MIGNOLET NOT AT FAULT
It's easy to say that a goalkeeper should not be beaten from 35 yards, but looking at the super slow-mo of the Cabaye goal Mignolet is almost blameless in my book.
26' HEADED CHANCE
Liverpool have a great chance to level. Suarez brings down a corner superbly and crosses for Sakho, who heads wide from eight yards.
24' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's another stunner from the Frenchman, who picked up the ball on the halfway line and ran from deep before unleashing a wickedly swerving shot that dipped in front of Mignolet and ended up in the corner of the net.
23' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 1 LIVERPOOL 0
Yohan Cabaye gives Newcastle the lead.
22' SKRTEL HEADS OVER
Gerrard peels away unmarked beyond the back post to head back into the danger zone. Skrtel should do better than head way over the bar from near the penalty spot.
21' SUAREZ GOES CLOSE
Cheick Tiote is spoken to by Mr Marriner after a late tackle on Suarez. Liverpool's Uruguayan then sees a header from a corner cleared by Santon, though replays show it was drifting wide.
18' INJURY CONCERN
Santon is looking in some discomfort at full-back for Newcastle with what appears to be a leg injury. He will try to continue for now.
16' LOOKING FOR A CENTURY
Interesting that Steven Gerrard should score for England on Tuesday. The Liverpool captain last scored from open play for his club against Manchester City in February. Stevie G's previous four club goals have been penalties and he is just one shy of a century of Premier League goals for the Reds.
13' WEAK SHOT FROM STURRIDGE
Moses brings down the ball well and slides a pass forward for Sturridge, who will be disappointed with a timid angled drive straight at Krul.
10' MUST DO BETTER
Toon boss Alan Pardew made the point before the match that he was expecting big things from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa today. The Frenchman, who he said was “on big money”, was substituted at half-time in his last match at Everton after a dismal display.
8' RARE FOUL THROW
Debuchy is penalised for a foul throw by the referee for raising his foot while delivering the ball. It's something you see often from schoolboys, not professional footballers.
7' NEWCASTLE HIT BACK
A raking long pass forward by Cabaye almost puts in Ben Arfa, but Skrtel does expertly to head away. Debuchy then shoots straight at Mignolet from 30 yards.
5' EARLY REDS THREAT
Liverpool almost create the first shooting threat, but after a slick passing move Glen Johnson goes down in the box looking hopefully for a penalty and the chance is gone.
3' KEEP THEM QUIET
Alan Pardew's message to his side must be to keep Liverpool quiet early on as 10 of the Reds' 11 goals this season have come in the first half.
1' HERE WE GO
Liverpool kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
Both sides make two changes despite winning last time out. Newcastle bring in Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for the injured Fabricio Coloccini and Hatem Ben Arfa replaces Papiss Cisse. Liverpool recall the fit-again Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho at the expense of Jose Enrique and Raheem Sterling.

0' PREVIEW
The titanic battles between the big clubs aside, the meeting of Newcastle United and Liverpool is one of the most eagerly-anticipated dates in the Premier League calendar. It all stems back to two pulsating back-to-back 4-3 wins for the Reds in 1995 and 1996 and while the personnel may have changed this pairing never seems to serve up a poor game when they meet. It's a fixture that promises goals, there have been 28 in the last seven meetings at St James' Park and you have to look all the way back to Feb. 23 1974 for the last goalless draw between them. Brendan Rodgers will be anxious for his side to collect maximum points today, because there are some difficult tests lying in wait away from home in the coming weeks. It's Arsenal at the Emirates in their next away game and then a date with Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison. After a trip to Hull, there are visits to Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea before 2013 is out. We'll certainly know a lot more about Liverpool's title credentials if they are in the same position they currently occupy come the turn of the year. Today's game kicks off at 1245BST, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
The SAS of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez is firing on all cylinders at present and gives the visitors arguably the most potent one-two attacking punch in the Premier League. The pair were simply devastating on their last trip to the North East a fortnight ago, Sturridge setting up two goals for Suarez and helping himself to another in the 3-1 win at Sunderland. Former Chelsea frontman Sturridge is currently the Premier League's leading marksman, with six goals to his name, just one more than Newcastle's on-loan France striker Loic Remy, who has scored five goals in his last three outings.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 74 wins to 42 by Newcastle and 38 games being drawn. At St James' Park, Newcastle have 31 wins to 23 by Liverpool, with a further 23 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Apr. 27 saw the Reds run out emphatic 6-0 winners, with Daniel Agger putting them in front inside three minutes, Jordan Henderson (17 and 76 mins) and Daniel Sturridge (54, 60) both netting twice and Fabio Borini (74) also on target. Newcastle had Mathieu Debuchy sent off 15 minutes from time. A Toon defender had also seen red in the earlier meeting between the sides at Anfield, Fabricio Coloccini being dismissed six minutes from time. Newcastle still managed a creditable point, Yohan Cabaye (43) giving them the lead and Luis Suarez (67) levelling for the home side.
0' FORM GUIDE
Newcastle start the day in 11th place with 10 points from seven games, six fewer than Liverpool who sit second behind leaders Arsenal on goals scored. Newcastle won at Cardiff in their last match, but they have won just one of their last six at home dating back to the end of last season. Liverpool have won their last two and are one of just three teams in the Premier League yet to be beaten on the road. Their last away defeat was to Southampton all the way back in March.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Newcastle will be without their Argentine duo Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez, the former having been ruled out with a groin injury and the latter having been allowed to return home for personal reasons. Steven Taylor is still struggling with a hamstring injury, so Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Mike Williamson are likely to start in central defence. Liverpool have defenders Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho available again after injury and midfielder Joe Allen has recovered from a hamstring problem. With Lucas Leiva available after suspension, the only absentee is Philippe Coutinho, who is not quite over his shoulder problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower has dispensed 18 cautions in five Premier League appointments, though he failed to reach for his pocket once in his last outing, the west London derby between Chelsea and Fulham at Stamford Bridge. Marriner's lone red card in the league was brandished in the opening round of games, to Newcastle's Steven Taylor in the defeat at Manchester City. The assistant referees today are Scott Ledger and Marc Perry, while Lee Mason is the fourth official.
