Aston Villa vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' FIRST GOAL THAT DID IT
After a frantic first, half full of end to end footbal, you always felt that whoever scored first would take the confidence to go on and win the game. Villa had their chances, which a fully-fit Benteke may have taken, but it was Everton who took the lead, something against the run of play. Sub Leon Osman found Lukaku in the box, and the Belgian's first-time shot beat Brad Guzan. A well-planned short corner allowed Osman to double his side's lead, and it was this second goal that deflated the home side. The scoreline was perhaps more flattering than the game suggested, but it is taking your chances that counts.
90' FULL TIME
That's it. A terrific three points for Everton. Aston Villa 0 - 2 Everton.
90' LONG RANGE EFFORT
A short corner finds its way to Baines on the edge of the box. Just wide from the England man.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
Four minutes are signalled by the fourth official.
90' GAME OVER?
The second goal seems to have sapped the confidence from this Villa side. Simple passing is a struggle at the moment.
90' EVERTON SUB
Roberto Martinez makes his final substitution, replacing Kevin Mirallas with Barcelona youngster Gerard Deulofeu.
88' WING PLAY
Coleman and Mirallas combine well down the right but the cross from Mirallas doesn't beat the first man.
85' CROWD CHANTING
"Are you watching, David Moyes" rings round Villa Park from the Everton fans.
84' SO CLOSE
A quickly taken free kick from Everton, and Naismith has the chance to turn and look for the bottom corner, but he can only find the side netting.
81' INSPIRED SUB
Kevin Mirallas takes a short corner to Baines. Baines passes to Barry in the channel, who pulls his cross back to the edge of the box, where a waiting Leon Osman has the time to place his finish past Brad Guzan. A well worked goal.
81' GOOOOOOALLLLLLL
Leon Osman surely secures three points for Everton. Aston Villa 0 - 2 Everton.
79' EVERTON SUB
Roberto Martinez replaces Steven Pienaar with Steven Naismith.
76' VILLA SUB
Paul Lambert chucks on another forward, with Nicklas Helenius replacing Aleksandar Tonev.
75' GREAT CHANCE FOR VILLA
Some lovely one-touch football from Villa, releases Weimann to cut back for an on-rushing Agbonlahor, but his effort is a bit tame and straight into the arms of the Everton keeper. He should have done better perhaps.
73' OPTIMISTIC
Tonev and Weimann with a one-two of their own on the edge of the box, buys the Villa stiker just enough time to shoot high over the bar.
69' ON THE BREAK
A great one-two down the left flank between Baines and Osman, releasing the latter to cross for Benteke to curl an effort round the despairing dive of Brad Guzan.
68' GOOOOOOAAAALLLLL
And there it is. Lukaku gives Everton the lead. Aston Villa 0 - 1 Everton.
66' TOP CROWD
There is a great atmosphere in Villa Park today - both sets of supporters making themselves heard. Can either side get a goal to reward their support?
63' LUCKY?
That challenge was late, not malicious, but on another day could have been a red.
62' EVERTON BOOKING
James McCarthy and Ashley Westwood clash in the middle of the park. Westwood just gets there first and is caught late by the former Wigan man. Yellow card.
61' ANOTHER DAY
Christian Benteke almost gets free of the Everton defenders, but perhaps it is a lack of match fitness that allows Jagielka to recover.
60' EVERTON SUB
Ross Barkley has not had his most effective game today, and is replaced with Leon Osman.
59' HOME SIDE LIFT
Villa have certainly upped the tempo in this second half, looking much more positive in their approach.
57' NEARLY A PROBLEM
Fabian Delph tries to bend a shot to the far post, but a deflection off a defender almost catches Howard wrong footed, drifting just wide.
57' KEEP UP
It's Agbonlahor up against James McCarthy, and there is only one winner in that race, but Phil Jagielka is in the right place at the right time to hack the ball clear.
55' FINAL BALL
Kevin Mirallas looks dangerous when Everton do manage to get forward, but his final ball isn't quite good enough to cause problems.
54' HOME SIDE ON TOP
A good spell for Villa at the start of this second half. Everton can't get out of their own half at the moment. Can the home side make this pressure tell?
53' GOOD IN BOTH BOXES
Phil Jagielka makes a great block to turn a dangerous Benteke shot over the bar. Lukaku is back to head the corner clear.
52' EARLY SHOT
Ross Barkley has a snap shot from distance that drifts harmlessly wide.
50' HIGH PRESSING
Aston Villa put the Everton defence under intense pressure, forcing a mistake from Distin. Ashley Westwood can't quite pick out Benteke when the chance was on.
48' BE AWARE
Nathan Baker needs to learn from Luna's earlier mistakes. He is caught out of position, allowing Mirallas freedom to run into the box, but fortunately for the Villa man, the Belgian's cross is cleared to safety.
46' KICK OFF
The home side get the second half started.
45' A GOAL IS COMING....
In a game that was billed as the battle of the Belgians, it is two American keepers that have come out on top in the first half. Both men have pulled off some decent saves, most notably Howard saving Benteke's penalty and Guzan denying Lukaku from close range. The game has been full of incident, with both sides looking to get men forward at every opportunity, and you feel it is only a matter of time before a goal is scored.
45' HALF TIME
Somehow the scores are level at half time. Aston Villa 0 - 0 Everton.
45' VILLA SUB
On the stroke of half time, Villa replace the injured Luna with Ciaran Clark. Nathan Baker moves across to left back.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
Two minutes are added.
43' INJURY TO LUNA
Antonio Luna is down and looks in some trouble. He stretched to control a ball and pulled up straight away. Villa are down to ten for the time being.
41' THERE WERE OPTIONS
Ross Barkley picks up a loose ball on the edge of the box, and has team-mates free to either side, but tries to find a yard to shoot and loses the ball. Wrong decision.
39' UNDER WRAPS
A good spell from Villa earns them a couple of corners, but Distin has target man Benteke well marshalled.
36' WEAK LINK
Antonio Luna is not looking the most comfortable at left back today, and Everton seem to have noticed, focusing their attacks down their right flank. He needs some help back there.
34' WIDE
Luna is completely out of position, freeing Kevin Mirallas to dance into the Villa box. He turns Baker inside and out, but the young defender keeps his feet to deflect the shot wide. Villa clear the corner.
31' ANOTHER CHANCE
Romelu Lukaku bullies his way past Luna and Vlaar but Guzan gets out well to smother the toe-poked effort.
29' OFF THE BAR
Ross Barkley finally comes to life. He picks the ball up 35 yards out, takes one touch and smashes it towards goal. His effort takes a deflection and cannons off the crossbar with Guzan stranded.
29' WHAT A GAME
How is this still 0-0? The pace of the game is frantic, and neither team is afraid to push forward. You feel it is only a matter of time before the deadlock is broken.
26' END TO END
And it's Guzan's turn to make a save. Coleman's cross from the right flank is headed goalward by Lukaku, but Villa's American keeper makes the save from close range.
25' TOP KEEPER
Tim Howard is having a great game. Andreas Weimann beats the offside trap and is through on goal, but doesn't look confident as Howard comes out to save.
23' WHAT A CHANCE
Christian Benteke should score. Aleksandar Tonev picks up the ball in space, and finds Benteke's perfectly timed run behind the defence. Howard gets out sharply to deny the Belgian, but a square ball to Bacuna would have led to a certain goal.
19' EASY FOR THE KEEPER
Antonio Luna gives away a cheap foul on the edge of the box. Villa Park holds its breath as Baines steps up to the ball, but his cross is safely gathered by Guzan.
15' SET PLAY DANGER
Benteke threatens from a corner, but his header loops off Gareth Barry to safety. That was almost a free header for the Villa man. Everton need to watch that.
14' YET TO SETTLE
Everton are trying to get the ball down and play, but aren't being given the space by Villa. A good start by the home side.
11' SHOULD BE OK
Benteke is holding his arm in pain after being trod on during a sliding challenge. He shakes it off. What a hero!
10' LUCKY BOY
Aleksandar Tonev should have been booked. Baines takes the ball down and lays it off, only for Tonev to come in very late and rake his studs down the back of his calf. The ref has a word.
8' SAVED IT
Christian Benteke gets up to take it himself. A short run up, aiming for the top left corner, but Tim Howard gets across to make a great save. Let off for Everton.
7' PENALTY
Benteke chases down a ball over the top and gets his heels clipped by Coleman. Definite penalty.
5' LUNA CAUGHT
A long ball over the top finds Mirallas and has the Villa defence worried. He tries to square for Lukaku, but the defenders have recovered to clear.
4' TOUGH START
Villa's points total looks a little more impressive when you consider they have played six of last season's top seven already this season.
1' FIRST EFFORT
An early range finder for Lukaku. Seamus Coleman whips in a low ball but the Everton striker is well marshalled by Ron Vlaar.
1' COULD BE A LONG DAY
The first thing you notice is the boos ringing round Villa Park as soon as Gareth Barry touches the ball.
1' KICK OFF
Anthony Taylor's whistle gets the game started. Everton kick off.
0' TEAM NEWS

0' MATCH PREVIEW
One the weekend that the FA celebrates its 150th anniversary, Aston Villa welcome Everton to Villa Park, in the most played fixture in the English top flight. Two of the Premiership's hottest young strikers battle for supremacy, as highly-rated Belgians Lukaku and Benteke both seek to grab the goals in the Midlands. Join us from 15.00 for full commentary.
0' LAMBERT'S LADS
Christian Benteke is expected to return to the Villa starting lineup as he continues his comeback from injury, following a substitute appearance last time out. Defender Ciaran Clark missed the defeat to Tottenham through illness, but has made a full recovery and is available. Long term casualties James Okore, Charles N'Zogbia and Gary Gardner are the only absentees.
0' MARTINEZ'S MEN
Steven Pienaar came off the bench to score against Hull in his own comeback from injury, and is expected to start, while John Heitinga suffered an injury in training during the week, and faces a late fitness test. Antolin Alcaraz and Darron Gibson are both missing. Romelu Lukaku is expected to lead the line for the Toffees.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Villa are just leading the head-to-head statistics with 72 wins to Everton's 71 in the last 196 league meetings, although seven of the last nine league meetings have been drawn. Last season's corresponding fixture at Villa Park was a 3-1 win for the Toffees – their first in win in 13 league attempts.
0' FORM
Villa have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six and will be looking to make amends for a 0-2 home defeat to Spurs last time out. During the same period Everton have lost two and won four, coming back from a goal down to beat Hull at Goodison last weekend. Villa have struggled for consistency this season, and their only home win so far was a 3-2 victory over Manchester City. However, Everton's only away success was a victory at West Ham and they have drawn half of their last 12 away games, winning just that one.
0' GOAL FEST
The stats would suggest goals for both sides, as Villa have not kept a clean sheet in their last 15 Premier League home games, whereas the away side have been unable to prevent Villa from scoring in any of their last 18 league meetings.
0' SEASON SO FAR
Aston Villa currently occupy 13th place in the league, three points clear of the relegation zone, and five points behind their opposition. Lambert will be hoping the return of Benteke will provide a goalscoring boost, but need a clean sheet to give their young side a boost. Everton currently lie in seventh, only four points behind leaders Arsenal, and have impressed many this season with their brand of attacking football.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Anthony Taylor will referee the game, returning straight to action after the goal that shouldn't have been for Chelsea against Cardiff. The Altrincham fan, from Manchester has issued one red and 24 yellows in his six games so far this season.
