Minute Commentary
90' CHELSEA 2-1 MAN CITY
I said eariler that most of the time these games don't live up to the build-up, but this match can be listed as one of the rare ones that has. Incredible drama as Chelsea grab an injury time winner through the fantastic Fernando Torres. In all honesty you can't say the hosts didn't deserve it on the balance of play as they had most of the game and the majority of the chances. Torres missed a sitter early on as he skied a volley from ten yards out when he looked odds on to score, but he made up for it minutes later by brilliantly setting up Andre Schurrle's opener. There wasn't much of a response from the 2012 champions, and in fact Chelsea nearly doubled their advantage straight away through Torres as the Spaniard struck the woodwork with a great effort from distance. Man City started the second period well and got their reward through a sensational Sergio Aguero goal as the in-form striker buried a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box. The visitors didn't have the momentum for long though, and it was Mourinho's men that were pressing for a winner as time went on, and they got the goal they, and Fernando Torres, deserved when the forward was the benficiary of a mix-up between Matija Nastasic and Joe Hart right at the death. Jose will be walking on air, Pellegrini will be as sick as a parrot, and any neutrals who have any sense will be tuning into Match of the Day 2 tonight.
90' LAST GASP CHELSEA CLAIM ALL THREE POINTS
That is that - Howard Webb blows for full time, and Chelsea have secured a dramatic victory over title rivals Man City. What an end to that one!
90' MOST OF THE WAY THROUGH INJURY TIME
Four minutes were added on at Stamford Bridge, but three and a half of them have already passed by and Chelsea have a free-kick in their own half. The home fans are absolutely delirious and they have every right to be.
90' CHELSEA 2-1 MAN CITY
Just as I was writing that the game was petering out and both sides would settle for a point Fernando Torres wins it for Chelsea! Manuel Pellegrini will be absolutely furious though because the goal is as soft as they come. A hopeful long ball is chased down by Torres, and Matija Nastasic tries to head it back to Joe Hart, oblivious to the fact that the goalkeeper was on the edge of the area himself. The ball loops over Hart and Torres sprints towards it and puts it into an empty net from the angle. To all the youngsters out there, heed that lesson - persistence pays off.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Fernando Torres has surely won it for Chelsea! If ever a man deserved a goal!
86' SILLY DEFENDING FROM TERRY
John Terry can count himself very lucky to escape without a yellow card here as the former England captain needlessly elbows Sergio Aguero in the back as the two tussle in an aerial duel. Alvaro Negredo has just replaced City's goalscorer, and Chelsea have a different type of forward threat to think about now.
85' HAZARD REPLACED
Eden Hazard will not play another part in this match as he is replaced by Samuel Eto'o with just five minutes remaining. Mourinho has gone with the old school two up top to finish this one.
82' UNSELFISH WORK
He might not have a goal to show for it but Fernando Torres has lead the line superbly for Chelsea tonight. His persistence earns his side a corner, but Gael Clichy is on hand to clear the danger. The full time whistle is approaching, and the hosts are the ones pushing for the winner.
80' MAN CITY CHANGE
Ramires takes on David Silva and has a lot of grass to run into all of a sudden, but the Brazilian chooses the wrong option. Instead of passing it out wide to the well-placed Ivanovic he tries a dipping effort that sails over the crossbar. Pellegrini has made another sub as well - Javi Garcia is put out of his misery, with Aleksander Kolarov on in his place.
77' OPPORTUNITY WASTED AT THE BACK POST
Oscar chips a free-kick to the back stick for the waiting Gary Cahill, and the defender is all alone with the ball at his feet, but the former Bolton man clearly wasn't expecting it to come to him and he loses control before he has the chance to shoot. It's "stick ot twist" time for the two managers - go for the win and get caught on the break, or approach on the side of caution and wonder what could have been?
75' NEARLY ANOTHER PEARLER
Aguero is very close to netting another worldie as he chips Petr Cech from the angle, but it is just wide of the far post. Meanwhile Jesus Navas and David Silva are winded by Ramires and Terry respectively and they are down on the turf. Fifteen minutes remain for someone to find a winner.
73' MORE CHANGES
Another substitution to report, as Willian replaces the quiet Frank Lampard for the hosts. Just after that change, City break at pace through Sergio Aguero, who tees up the onrushing Jesus Navas. The winger's shot is well blocked by Gary Cahill though. His pace on the counter could be vital for Pellegrini's side.
71' POOR ATTEMPT
It is the Brazilian who takes it, but his effort is not indicative of the form he has displayed so far this season. High, wide and not very handsome. The visitors make a change just after that, sending the speedy Jesus Navas on for Samir Nasri.
69' ANOTHER POOR CHALLENGE
Fernando Torres looks like a man reborn today, and he drives forward at the City defence again, and is only halted when Fernandinho and Javi Garcia sandwich him on his way towards the area. Oscar's eyes are wide open as he sizes this free-kick up.
67' SUB FOR THE HOSTS
Chelsea make a change as we approach the last quarter of this match, John Obi Mikel replacing goalscorer Andre Schurrle. What price the home fans would pay to see the Nigerian notch his second goal of the season in the next few minutes.
65' SHARP SAVE
When City do get the ball in and around the Chelsea box though, they still look dangerous. That is certainly the case here as David Silva jinks his way over a couple of challenges and has a pop from the angle that looks destined for the far corner until Cech sticks out a limb and blocks it on its way.
63' GARCIA STRUGGLING
Javi Garcia is not making the impression Manuel Pellegrini would like him to here. The midfielder was guilty of a terrible foul on Torres earlier as he failed to keep up with the striker, and he sends what should be a simple free-kick out wide to Demichelis out for a throw-in. It has been all Chelsea since the goal, and the visitors might want to think about making a change soon.
60' TEMPERS BOILING OVER
Oh deary me, that is about as cynical as they come from Javi Garcia. The City man spots that Fernando Torres is streaming past him off the ball making a run into the box, and he just bodychecks him and sends the Spanish frontman to the floor. Torres is saying it was an elbow, but Garcia gets away with it. Things are starting to to heat up a little here.
56' HAZARD GUILTY OF SIMULATION
A contentious moment that will no doubt split opinion here as Eden Hazard twists and turns like an alligator with a twitch inisde the area, and Pablo Zabaleta puts in a clumsy challenge. The full-back doesn't get the ball, but he doesn't take much of the man either and Hazard takes another step before throwing himself to the floor. It looked like a dive to me, but Chelsea fans will disagree. Confusingly, Howard Webb doesn't book Hazard.
53' MOMENTUM WITH THE VISITORS
All of a sudden Man City have got their tails up, and Javi Garcia nearly completes the turnaround with his header, but Petr Cech is behind it and catches it easily. Garcia should really have done better there as it was a free header from a central position.
50' CHELSEA 1-1 MAN CITY
I said earlier he was capable of producing something from nothing, and Sergio Aguero has done exactly that! Samir Nasri delivers a perfectly weighted through ball for the Argentine, who is just onside, to run onto, and Aguero stuns Stamford Bridge with an unnerring strike into the top corner. You could say that Petr Cech shouldn't be beaten at his near post, but that was some goal from Ageuro.
49' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Sergio Aguero levels things up with a sublime strike! City are right back in this one now!
47' WASTED FREE-KICK
City have a free-kick in a central position and it is a great opportunity to get the ball in the mixer and put the Chelsea backline under some pressure. Instead they try a fancy training ground manouevre and David Silva is closed down before he can strike the ball goalwards. Soon after Pablo Zabaleta shoots well over the bar from the edge of the area.
46' BACK UNDER WAY
Man City get the second half started at Stamford Bridge - Martin Demichelis is still on for the visitors, despite having a torrid time in the first 45 minutes.
45' CHELSEA 1-0 MAN CITY
It was the hosts who started and ended the half better at Stamford Bridge as they take a deserved half time lead. City had a period of possession based dominance without really threatening, but the chances have been flowing with regularity for Chelsea. Fernando Torres was the culprit of the worst miss of the game as he couldn't find the target from the penalty spot under no pressure, but the record Chelsea signing redeemed himself with a powerful run to set up Andre Schurrle's goal after half an hour. In the immediate aftermath of that goal Mourinho's side could easily have doubled their lead through Torres as the Spaniard's wonderful strike crashed back off the upright and City survived. The visitors have had brief moments of promise, but they will be concerned that the likes of Toure, Silva and Nasri are struggling to impose themselves on the game while Oscar, Hazard and Schurrle are running riot for the home team. Chelsea will be hoping for more of the same after the interval, but Manuel Pellegrini has some serious work to do heading into the second period. Join us back here shortly to see how the second 45 minutes pan out.
45' CHELSEA LEAD AT HALF TIME
There is enough time for both teams to create chances before the half-time whistle blows as Oscar gets to the byline but can't pick anybody out in the middle before Yaya Toure blasts a long-range strike over the bar. 1-0 to Chelsea at the break.
45' TWO EXTRA MINUTES
There will be two minutes added on at Stamford Bridge as City press for an equaliser just before the interval. They force a corner, but it is well defended by the hosts, and Manuel Pellegrini will have to start thinking about how he is going to inspire his side at the break.
42' LIVELY PLAY, GOOD SAVE
Pablo Zabaleta marauds forward for the visitors and finds Sergio Aguero in the box with a neat pass. The little striker turns on a dime and unleashes an effort that Petr Cech beats out with both fists. He can make something out of nothing, Aguero, and Chelsea will have to keep an eye on him the longer this game goes on.
40' RARE CITY FORAY FORWARD
Man City force their way into the opposition half for the first time in what seems an age, but Sergio Aguero doesn't catch his volley at all and the opportunity is gone. There will be a break in play as well as Samir Nasri has gone down injured inside the Chelsea box.
36' CHELSEA PLAYING WITH CONFIDENCE
The home side look buoyed by that goal, and they are playing some exhibition football here. First, a clever triangle of passes between Hazard, Torres and Schurrle releases the latter but he had just strayed offside. Moments later Fernando Torres cuts inside Martin Demichelis and releases a fierce strike that cannons back off the far post. So unlucky for Chelsea, and Mourinho knows it. He looks like a boy who has just been served a plate of vegetables on the touchlines.
34' CHELSEA 1-0 MAN CITY
It's Schurrle who has netted, but it is Fernando Torres who will get a lot of the plaudits. The forward makes amends for his shocking miss a few moments back as he supplies the first goal of the day. Torres picks the ball up on the right-hand side, makes an absolute mug of Gael Clichy and pulls the ball back from the byline for Andre Schurrle to tap home from two yards out. Advantage Chelsea.
33' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Andre Schurrle gives Chelsea the lead with his first goal in the Premier League!
31' HOW HAS HE MISSED
This sums up Fernando Torres' Chelsea career so far. The Spanish frontman makes a great run to get on the end of Ramires' dinked ball over the top and beat the offisde trap. He has just Joe Hart to beat from ten yards out, but he spoons his volley over the bar. A collective sigh is heard around Stamford Bridge.
28' DANGEROUS DELIVERY
Ramires creates the best moment of the game so far as he wins the ball off Aguero in a wide position and floats a lovely cross into the six-yard box. Branislav Ivanovic tries to attack it but can't quite reach it, before the ball eventually falls for Torres, but it was at an awkward height for him. The linesman's flag was alreay up, but something for the home fans to get their teeth into.
26' DEFNESIVE MIDS WORKING HARD
Defensive midfielders are often the unsung heroes of many teams, so I'm going to take the chance to make them, er, sung. Ramires and Fernandinho are working tirelessly in the centre of the park, breaking up play with regularity and using the ball wisely when they win it.
23' FIRST BOOKING
Frank Lampard is the first man to be acquainted with Howard Webb's book this afternoon as the veteran midfielder puts in a clumsy challenge on the halfway line on Fernandinho. After their impressive start to this match, the Chelsea intensity has dropped significantly.
21' CANCELLING EACH OTHER OUT
Such is the magnitude of these types of games and so high is the pressure that often they will fail to meet up to the hype. That looks like being the case here today as neither side are committing too much too soon in fear of going a goal down. It's very tight and cagey at the moment.
19' EXCELLENT RUN FROM AGUERO
Much has been made about the goalscoring ability of Sergio Aguero, but he has a lot of steel and ferocity to his game as well, as is shown when he goes on a run that takes him past three City defenders against the odds. The striker can't get enough power behind his finish however, and it is easy for Petr Cech to collect.
15' VISITORS CRANKING UP THE GEARS
Ever since I said that City are struggling to get into the game they have started to dominate proceedings at Stamford Bridge - Fernandinho sprays a lovely pass towards David Silva inside the Chelsea area, but the midfielder's pull back is well cut out by Ramires. It's been an interesting quarter of an hour so far.
13' FIRST SHOT AT GOAL
We have our first sight of goal from either side, and it is City that create it as Samir Nasri shoots wide from the angle. It wouldn't have counted anyway because Sergio Aguero was adjudged to have been offisde when he teed up the Frenchman.
11' NO RHYTHM FOR CITY
Many people would have been billing this as the battle of the tacticians as both Mourinho and Pellegrini are known for their tactical flexibility, but it is the Portuguese who is outwitting his rival so far. Man City are struggling to keep hold of the ball due to the pressure being exerted on them and they are being coerced into long balls that are easy for Gary Cahill and John Terry to mop up.
7' AMBITIOUS EFFORT
Fernando Torres tries to replicate the ridiculous heading ability displayed by Luis Suarez at Anfield yesterday as the Spaniard heads a long ball towards goal from the edge of the area. Joe Hart is just about tall enough to reach it though, and the chance is gone. Torres easily outclimbed Demichelis there, and the Argentine is not having an easy first ten minutes in a City shirt.
5' PRESSING HIGH
No chance of Jose Mourinho's men resting on their laurels here as they continue to press their opponents high up the pitch, and the tactic is bearing fruit so far. They are winning the ball back with ease and having a lot of possession in and around the City box. Ramires tries to jink into the area, but Matija Nasatasic blocks his path towards goal and the visitors can regroup.
3' NERVY INTRODUCTION
It is the hosts who have started much the better and they force an early corner as a pedestrian Oscar cross from the right is recklessly booted behind by Martin Demichelis under no pressure whatsoever. The first delivery is cleared, but when Oscar dinks another ball in Gary Cahill strikes a powerful volley that screams past the top of the bar.
1' WE'RE OFF
The clash of the titans is under way then - it is Chelsea who get us started at Stamford Bridge.
0' DEMICHELIS STARTS
A surprise inclusion for summer signing Martin Demichelis then as many had doubts about his fitness given his lack of matches, and Joleon Lescott would have been the prime contender to fill Vincent Kompany's boots in the Belgian defender's absence. As it is Demichelis makes his Man City debut at Stamford Bridge - talk about being thrown in at the deep end.....
0' FULL TEAMS
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle, Torres. Subs: Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Mikel, Willian, Mata, Eto'o. Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia, Fernandinho, Nasri, Toure, Silva, Aguero. Subs: Pantilimon, Navas, Kolarov, Dzeko, Negredo, Milner, Richards.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Ashley Cole is likely to return for Jose Mourinho's side after missing the midweek trip to Germany with a rib problem, while Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres will compete for a starting place up front for the Blues. Aside from that and long-term absentee Marco van Ginkel, Chelsea have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this clash. Meanwhile City will again be without captain Vincent Kompany as the captain hasn't recovered from a groin injury in time, but midfielder Jack Rodwell has come back from a hamstring complaint and could feature. Summer signing Martin Demichelis is not considered match fit, so he will have to wait for his debut for the club.
0' REF WATCH
Rotheram's Howard Webb will be today's referee, as the 42-year-old officiates his eleventh match of this Premier League season. Webb has been somewhat card shy thus far, handing out just 16 bookings in ten games, and has yet to reach for his red card. The man who came in for a tough time during the 2010 World Cup final will have Darren Cann and Scott Ledger as his assistants, while Chris Foy will deputise as the fourth official. The big games often need the big referees – Webb is the only man to take charge of a Champions League and World Cup final in the same year (2010), so the players and fans should feel in safe hands this afternoon.
0' NOTHING FAWLTY ABOUT MANUEL AND HIS MEN
Much like their opponents today, Man City have had some sticky moments in this campaign, but since being humbled at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the Manchester club have responded in a manner befitting of champions, seeing off Everton, West Ham and CSKA Moscow. One man who has been pivotal in this run has been Sergio Aguero, who has scored five goals in his last three matches for City. The Argentine is in lethal form, and if Pellegrini's side are to emerge victorious today you sense that the striker will have played a large part in it. An area of concern for the 2012 champions will be their form on the road, however, as they boast an unimpressive record of four wins in their last twelve Premier League away fixtures. Away games don't come much harder than a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Mourinho and his boys, but there is no doubt that this squad has the talent and ability to secure all three points this afternoon.
0' MOURINHO STARTING TO WORK HIS MAGIC
There have been a couple of rocky moments along the way, but all in all it appears that Chelsea are starting to hit their stride. In both domestic and European competition the Blues have been in very impressive form as of late, defeating Steaua Bucharest, Norwich, Cardiff and FC Schalke, scoring 14 goals in the process while conceding just two. Additionally, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto'o seem to have dug out their scoring boots and Jose Mourinho appears to be finding the perfect balance in his side. Everything looks pretty rosy at the moment for the Stamford Bridge club, but make no mistake about it, this afternoon's opponents are more than capable of ending that feel-good factor and overtaking them in the table.
0' PREVIEW
It may be too early in the day to be labelling games as title deciders as we are barely two months into the Premier League season, but many football fans will see this as a game that could well decide the destination of the trophy come the end of the campaign. Arsenal currently sit top of the perch, and whatever today's result things will stay that way until at least next week as neither of these sides can catch up to the Gunners this weekend. However, Chelsea and City are the two firm favourites for the title in many people's eyes, so the magnitude of this game cannot be understated regardless of how much football is still left to be played. As if that wasn't enough there could be an undertone of aggro given the reported bad blood between the two managers, as Jose Mourinho was quick to swipe at Manuel Pellegrini after replacing him in the Real Madrid hotseat. In short, this is probably the biggest game of the season so far – we'll have live text commentary of it from 16:00.
