Tottenham Hotspur vs. Hull City Tigers
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Spurs came out 1-0 victors in a tightly-fought game in North London today thanks to a Roberto Soldado penalty. They were on top for long spells of the game but Hull had good periods of play themselves. The first chance was on four minutes when Aaron Lennon's volley was saved well. Moments later Paulinho flicked the ball over Steve Harper but also over the bar and onto the roof of the net. George Boyd and Yannick Sagbo had great chances for Hull within a couple of minutes but Hugo Lloris was equal to both efforts. Tom Huddlestone fired over and Andros Townsend tested Harper. Into the second half and Spurs changed their style of play and stayed on top for the most part. They didn't create many opportunities though and Lloris was hardly called into action. On 79 minutes though, Ahmed Elmohamady was judged to have handled in the box, and a penalty was given. Soldado duly converted and Spurs had the advantage. There was a scare in the final ten minutes when Andros Townsend took a tumble and had lengthy treatment, but he came back on with a couple of minutes left to play. Full time in London and it's Spurs 1-0 Hull.
90' FULL TIME
Michael Oliver blows his whistle and signals the end of the game. Spurs come out 1-0 winners.
90' MISSES
Tom Huddlestone gets extreme power behind the free kick but the ball swerves wide of Lloris' goal.
90' CHANCE
We're into the 95th minute and Hull have a free kick bang on the edge of the area.
90' HIGH
Roberto Soldado holds the ball up well in the corner before giving it to Andros Townsend. The playmaker takes it central and hammers it at goal. It flies into row Z but at least it will run the clock down for Villas-Boas' side.
90' WELL SAVED
Free kick specialist Robbie Brady lines up a free kick in a great position for Hull. It's over the wall but Hugo Lloris plucks the ball out of the air and goes down to the ground clutching it. Five minutes of added time have been indicated.
88' BACK UP
Andros Townsend is back up and back on the pitch, thankfully. It looked nasty but he's come out with his wrist bandaged up and nothing else.
87' FINAL CHANGE
Nick Proschwitz is on for Hull and he replaces Yannick Sagbo who's contribution hasn't been the greatest.
84' FIRST CHANGE
Steve Bruce may have left it too late with his substitutions. With just over five minutes left Aaron McLean and Robbie Brady come on for Liam Rosenior and George Boyd.
83' NASTY TUMBLE
Play carries on as Andros Townsend goes tumbling over the advertising boards and into the photographers' pit. A stretcher was called and it certainly looked a bad incident. If he is going off then Spurs are down to ten as they've used all three subs.
80' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Sheer relief at White Hart Lane as ROBERTO SOLDADO converts the spot kick. The deadly finisher was nevee going to miss. That's his fourth league goal for Spurs and his third penalty.
79' PENALTY SPURS
Handball by Ahmed Elmohamady and Spurs have a penalty with just over ten to play! A goal's been coming for Spurs and they might just get one. It's harsh on the Hull winger though.
75' PRESSURE
Spurs get another corner - their sixth of the game - but they can't create anything and haven't done from their other five. The ball is aimed towards Defoe but Huddlestone beats him in the air with ease.
72' SHOOTING FROM RANGE
Hull are seemingly happy to defend. Paulinho picks up the ball a fair distance from goal and lets fly. The ball floats harmlessly over the bar though.
68' QUIET
The visitors have certainly been a lot quieter in this second half than they were in the first half. Meanwhile Steve Bruce hasn't made a change yet as Spurs make their final change. Jermain Defoe comes on in place of Aaron Lennon to give the hosts more attacking options.
64' HOLD UPS
First David Meyler goes down and receives treatment on the pitch, before the flailing arm of Paul McShane catches Roberto Soldado in the nose. The Spaniard goes down clutching his face but it's clearly accidental.
60' SUB
The hosts have just injected lots of creativity into their side now as Christian Eriksen enters the fray in place of Lewis Holtby. The German had been looking to get back into the Germany side but he's replaced by the Danish midfielder here.
59' YELLOW CARD
Vlad Chiriches recklessly takes down Yannick Sagbo after he's beaten him all ends up. Had Michael Dawson not been covering, Chiriches could have been given his marching orders.
57' PENALTY SHOUT
Soldado receives the ball in the box and is adamant that he is shoved over. The Spurs fans are on his side but Michael Oliver says no.
55' EXCELLENT CHANCE
Spurs really should be one up here but Steve Harper keeps his side in it. Andros Townsend sets off on one of his wavy trademark dribbles and feeds in Roberto Soldado. The Valencia old boy holds off two defenders before looking to curl beyond Harper, but it's scuffed slightly, and Harper punches away.
53' ALWAYS BEHIND IT
Steve Harper makes a comfortable save from a Kyle Walker free kick. The full back whacked it forward and it took a slight touch off Roberto Soldado, but it didn't faze Hugo Lloris, who keeps hold of the ball.
52' WARMING UP
Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jermain Defoe are warming up on the sideline. They'll both be disappointed they've not started today as they've been in fine form whenever they've been called upon this season.
49' PATIENCE
Spurs have started with a more patient approach in this second half - they're passing the ball about neatly, waiting for the opportune moment to venture forward. Andre Villas-Boas will be hoping this style of play is more effective and that Hull tire towards the end.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back underway here at White Hart Lane, and they're made an attacking sub. Belgian Moussa Dembele is on in place of Sandro, who had one of his worse games today.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
Both these two sides went in goalless at the break and it was more of an even contest than you'd expect. Spurs were on top for most of the half but Hull didn't come and defende, and created a few chances themselves. Aaron Lennon's volley was an early test for Steve Harper and then Paulinho couldn't keep his hooked volley down. Hull tried to break the deadlock through George Boyd and Yannick Sagbo, but neither of them could find a way past Hugo Lloris. Spurs old boy Tom Huddlestone fired just over and Andros Townsend brough a great diving save from Harper. An entertaining game but 0-0 at half time.
45' HALF TIME
Sandro's lousy attempt of a clearance allows George Boyd to get a shot off for Hull, but Hugo Lloris stays big and saves well. Seconds later the referee blows for half time.
45' DEFLECTION
Aaron Lennon looks dangerous as he attacks down the right. He turns around and whips over an inswinging cross. It's touched by a visiting player and Spurs win a corner kick. They don't create anything from it though and Hull get a goal kick.
42' VERY LUCKY
The ball is played back to Steve Harper, seemingly under zero pressure. The ex-Newcastle stopper dawdles though and Roberto Soldado comes to close him down. Harper kicks but hits the Spaniard and the ball falls to Lewis Holtby on the edge of the area. He takes a poor touch and fouls Paul McShane when trying to regain possession. Steve Bruce's side were definitely let off the hook there.
39' DANGEROUS AREA
Liam Rosenior is given a warning by the referee after he commits a foul 25 yards out. The ball is laid off to Kyle Walker who smashes the shot goalwards, stinging the palms of Steve Harper. Hull eventually get rid. That was a rocket of a shot from the England right back.
35' GREAT PLAY
Spurs sustain intense pressure in and around the Hull penalty area. Andros Townsend produces some excellent footwork to get past two players before sending the ball out to Aaron Lennon. They exchange passes again but the flag is up, as Lennon drifts into an offside position.
32' CLOSE
Tom Huddlestone comes close to grabbing his first goal since he scored for Tottenham in the North London derby two-and-a-half years ago. The ball drops kindly for him from a corner and he unleashes a volley inches above Hugo Lloris' bar. What a cracker of a goal that would've been.
30' LOVELY MOVE
The London side win a corner after a great move nearly creates a goal. Aaron Lennon backheels the ball to Paulinho who plays it out to Andros Townsend. Townsend then gives it back to Paulinho who's cleverly moved into a great position. He sends the ball across goal but Alex Bruce's important touch deflects it out.
27' PRESSING
Sagbo goes to play in Boyd, but it's too hard and Sandro looks like he's going to clear. Instead he tries to dribble out of trouble but Boyd won't give him any room to breathe. Eventually Spurs win a throw as Sandro's clearance hits Boyd and goes out. Good work from the ex-Peterborough man.
26' CORNER
This game certainly isn't as one-sided as lots thought it would be. Tom Huddlestone's crosses into the box are proving hard to deal with. Yannick Sagbo gets off a shot but it's saved and Hull win a corner.
22' PRESSURE
Hull are very much in this game now and have another excellent chance. Firstly Tom Huddlestone sends over a brilliant cross that causes havoc in the area. Paul McShane is dragged down and the away fans scream for a penalty, but Michael Oliver isn't interested. George Boyd smashes the loose ball at goal but it's blocked well. Spurs' counter comes to nothing.
18' HULL SHOTS
It's the visitors' turn to try and get a goal now. George Boyd receives the ball 40 yards out and dribbles towards goal. He strikes from the edge of the area but Hugo Lloris saves well. Seconds later Yannick Sagbo gets an opportunity from the right of goal - he hits the ball with power and Lloris parries the ball into empty space, but luckily no one reaches the ball before the Frenchman gathers at the second time of asking. End-to-end stuff at the minute.
17' GREAT SAVE
Tottenham could be ahead, but for the athleticism of veteran 'keeper Steve Harper. Andros Townsend lines up a bending shot from 25 yards that's curling towards the corner, but Harper hurls himself through the air and gets a vital hand to it.
16' LUCKY
Maynor Figueroa is so careless in possession he just plays the ball to Andros Townsend who can run towards the centre. He plays the ball into Holtby but he and Roberto Soldado get in the way of each other and the move breaks down.
13' JUST OVER
Spurs come close to taking the lead through holding midfielder Paulinho. Lewis Holtby sends over a peach of a cross and the Brazilian hooks the ball just over Steve Harper's crossbar. Good chance for the hosts - they're much the better side here.
10' FINAL THIRD LETDOWN
Barring Aaron Lennon's early shot, the home side haven't done much to test Steve Harper in the Hull goal. They've looked average when it comes to the final third of the field.
7' GREAT DELIVERY
Hull get a free kick roughly 40 yards out, and it's whipped in by Tom Huddlestone. It's a fantastic ball towards the far post, and it's met by the head of Paul McShane. The Irish defender's header isn't very accurate though, and Spurs gather and play the ball forward.
4' EARLY ATTACKS
The hosts have been on the front foot in these first four minutes. They've attacked down the right a lot, which is understandable, as Aaron Lennon pace could cause no end of problems for Maynor Figueroa. Lennon hit a volley from the centre moments ago, but Alex Bruce put in a vital block.
1' UNDERWAY
The home side get the game underway and are kicking from left to right. They're kitted up in white shirt and navy shorts, while visitors Hull have their all blue strip on.
0' HULL TEAM NEWS
Tom Huddlestone starts as expected, and most eyes will be on him today. Full line-up: Harper; Rosenior, Bruce, Davies, Figueroa; McShane; Elmohamady, Huddlestone, Meyler, Boyd; Sagbo. Subs: Jakupovic, Quinn, Brady, Koren, Gedo, Proschwitz, McLean.
0' SPURS TEAM NEWS

Full line-up: Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Dawson, Vertonghen; Paulinho, Sandro; Townsend, Holtby, Lennon; Soldado. Subs: Lamela, Naughton, Defoe, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Friedel.
0' PREVIEW
Spurs get back to league duties this weekend after their European outing on Thursday. The North London side earned a hard-fought win over in Moldova against Sheriff Tiraspol. Goals from Jermain Defoe and Jan Vertonghen gave Spurs a valuable three points in their quest of the Europa League. Results for Hull have got worse each week. Their last three games have seen them register a win, a draw and a loss last weekend at Everton, but they still sit ninth in the table, a place behind title holders Man United.
0' PRIORITIES
Tottenham's main priority will certainly be the league this season, and many football fans have tipped them as possible title contenders. Summer recruits Paulinho and Christian Eriksen had adapted quickly and looked great this season, while you have to feel the best is yet to come from Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado. Andros Townsend can do no wrong at the minute, and he is set to be recalled along with Kyle Walker for this afternoon's match. They can go third today, but won't want to suffer the same fate as Newcastle did when they competed in the Europa League last season.
0' OUT TO PROVE A POINT
Tigers midfielder Tom Huddlestone is out to prove his old gaffer wrong today. The ex-Derby man was at White Hart Lane for eight years between 2005 and 2013, and made nearly 150 league appearances for them. He made the move to East Yorkshire in August for a fee of around £5m, and the Hull faithful have been impressed with his start - with many stating he is one of the best passers England have at their disposal. He'll be hoping to keep up the good performances and earn a place on the plane to Brazil 2014.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
This is the 19th league match between these two sides, and only the fifth in the top flight. Interestingly, Spurs have never scored at home to Hull in the Premier League. In the Tigers' two seasons between 2008 and 2010, they managed to grind out a 1-0 and a 0-0 at White Hart Lane, but another clean sheet will prove hard to come by for Steve Bruce's side. At the KC it's a different matter – Spurs have won 2-1 and 5-1 there on their last two outings. All in all, of the 24 match-ups between the two, Spurs have won ten, Hull have won six while the other eight have ended all square.
0' REF WATCH
Today's man in charge is Michael Oliver. The 28-year old Northumberland-based official has been refereeing top flight games for three years, and is taking charge of his ninth game of the season today. Last time out, he was in Elfsborg to see over their Europa League game with Esbjerg on Thursday. Tweny eight yellow cards in eight games this season suggests there could be a few bookings today. Oliver has been criticised before though, for his tendency to issue red cards where other may give yellows.
