Newcastle United vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: NEWCASTLE 2 CHELSEA 0
Chelsea miss the chance to go top after falling to a shock defeat on Tyneside courtesy of Yoan Gouffran's 68th-minute goal and a second late on from Loic Remy. Jose Mourinho's men were well below their best, though John Terry did go close twice from corners in the first half, heading against the crossbar and seeing an effort cleared off the line by Davide Santon. Newcastle lacked the quality to create chances in the early going, but they grew into the game and went close on the hour. Petr Cech just got a touch to a shot from a narrow angle by Moussa Sissoko and Loic Remy fired straight at the Chelsea goalkeeper when a better-placed shot would have brought the opener. Cech also made a fine save to deny Gouffran, but could do nothing about the winner, which saw the Frenchman head home after a superbly-placed free-kick from Yohan Cabaye. The Blues might have snatched an equaliser, but Tim Krul saved well from Willian and Mathieu Debuchy blocked the goalbound follow-up from Samuel Eto'o. Remy added the second with an impressive finish in the final minute.
90' ETO'O SHOT BLOCKED
Eto'o turns and shoots but his effort is blocked by two Newcastle defenders.
90' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a glorious finish from the Frenchman, shooting in first time off the left-hand post with Anita supplying the cross. He is booked for taking his shirt off in celebration.
89' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 2 CHELSEA 0
Loic Remy nets for Newcastle. Game over!
87' HAZARD GOES CLOSE
Ramires finds Hazard in space down the left and his angled shot from 14 yards is dragged just wide of the post.
86' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Gouffran is replaced by Obertan and goes off to a terrific reception. Luiz heads over his own crossbar as Newcastle threaten a second.
84' STILL HOPE FOR CHELSEA
Chelsea have scored six times in the final 15 minutes of matches this season, the best return in the Premier League. This game is not over.
81' CHANCES FOR CHELSEA
Chelsea go close. Willian's initial attempt is parried by Krul and Debuchy blocks the follow-up from Eto'o. Shurrle then heads wide from a right-wing cross.
80' TAME EFFORT FROM REMY
Remy surges forward down the inside-left channel but his final shot is woefully tame and Cech saves.
78' CHELSEA BOOKING
Ramires is cautioned for the second time this season. It was a foul, but he would have got away with a warning had he not ignored Mr Mason's request to come and listen to a lecture.
75' CHELSEA BOOKING
Luiz is shown a yellow card after a late tackle on Remy.
74' PENALTY CLAIMS
Eto'o brings down a cross from Ivanovic and his shot hits a Newcastle arm and deflects just wide of the post. Chelsea want a penalty. Mr Mason says no.
73' FINE TACKLE FROM TERRY
Remy plays a magnificent one-two with Sissoko and is only denied by a last-ditch tackle by Terry. St James' Park is rocking at the moment.
71' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Mourinho makes his final change, with Andre Schurrle replacing the disappointing Lampard.
70' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Gouffran ghosted in behind Lampard to meet Cabaye's angled free-kick with a firm downward header into the corner, giving Cech no chance.
68' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 1 CHELSEA 0
Yoan Gouffran gives Newcastle the lead.
65' FINE SAVE FROM CECH
Gouffran cuts inside Ivanovic and drives a low shot inside the near post that is well saved by Cech.
63' CHANGES FOR BOTH TEAMS
It's a double switch for Chelsea. Eto'o replaces Torres and Willian is on for Mata. Newcastle throw on Papiss Cisse for Ameobi.
61' TOON SO CLOSE
Sissoko sneaks in down the left, latching on to a pass from Debuchy and shoots a whisker wide from a narrow angle. Remy then fires straight at Cech after a knockdown from Ameobi.
60' GREAT CHANCE FOR NEWCASTLE
Ameobi gets clear down the left but makes such a mess of the opportunity it was not clear whether his final effort was a shot or he was looking for Remy.
59' WAITING IN THE WINGS
It won't be long before we see Samuel Eto'o on for Chelsea. He is being given instructions on the sidelines.
58' DRAWING A BLANK
Somewhat surprisingly having seen their impressive display at Arsenal in midweek, Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in four consecutive Premier League matches. During Mourinho's first stint in charge they went five straight games without a clean sheet just once, between September and November 2005.
56' HAZARD DOWN INJURED
Hazard collapses in a heap with no-one around him. It looks like a delayed reaction to a kick on his Achilles moments before.
54' ALL GOING TO PLAN
His side are not playing well, but so far this is turning out just how Alan Pardew would have hoped. Keep Chelsea close for the first hour or so and unleash Hatem Ben Arfa to go and grab a late winner.
53' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Newcastle make a switch, with Tiote making way for Vurnon Anita. The captain must have picked up a knock.
51' DEBUCHY IMPRESSING
Mata cuts in from the left and looks to get in a shot on goal. But Debuchy, who has been excellent at right-back so far, gets a foot in at the vital time.
49' BACK IN FAVOUR FOR NOW
Juan Mata appeared in all but three Premier League matches last season. It's still early in this campaign, but he's already been left out four times. Mata got the start today, but his influence has been limited in the first 45 minutes.
48' TORRES CAUGHT OFFSIDE
Mata slides a pass through for Torres, but he is a good yard offside and that's an easy decision for the linesman.
47' JOSE FAR FROM HAPPY
Jose Mourinho appears to have given his players a short sharp blast at the interval. He was back on the Chelsea bench well before the start of the second half and has a face like thunder.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: NEWCASTLE 0 CHELSEA 0
It's goalless at the break and that will please Newcastle more than the visitors as they have limited the attacking threat from Jose Mourinho's men. Chelsea went close early on with John Terry seeing a header from a Juan Mata corner crash back off the bar and Branislav Ivanovic's deflected follow-up also hit the woodwork. After early promise, though, they have been kept pretty quiet, though Terry did see another headed effort from a corner cleared off the line by Davide Santon. Newcastle themselves have not provided much of a threat in the attacking third of the pitch, as you might expect. Yohan Cabaye had one long-range effort comfortably dealt with by Petr Cech and Moussa Sissoko has also forced a save from the Chelsea goalkeeper.
44' FINAL WARNING
Cabaye receives a final warning after tripping former Lille team-mate Hazard. Next time he is in the book.
41' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Moussa Sissoko is booked for a clumsy tackle on Ivanovic. He can have no complaints.
38' OFF THE LINE
Another goalbound effort from a Chelsea corner. Terry's header is cleared away from the right-hand post by Santon. Newcastle then break and Sissoko's shot is saved by Cech.
34' PUTTING HIMSELF ABOUT
Tiote slips and goes through the back of Oscar, bringing the Brazilian tumbling to the ground. He's a little lucky not to escape a booking having committed three fouls already in the first half-hour.
32' WATCH OUT FOR LAMPS
Newcastle need to keep an eye out for Frank Lampard, the England midfielder has five goals in his last ten Premier League matches at St. James' Park.
31' LONG SHOT FROM CABAYE
Cabaye is dangerous from anywhere on the pitch and he collects a knockdown from Remy before firing a low shot on target from 25 yards. Cech deals with it comfortably.
30' FAST BREAK FROM CHELSEA
Chelsea break swiftly and an excellent pass from Mata picks out Hazard on the right. The Belgian beats his man with ease, but there is too much on the cross and the chance is gone.
27' IMPRESSIVE DEFENDING
Yanga-Mbiwa makes a timely interception to cut out a dangerous ball in from Luiz. Had he got that wrong the defender could easily have sliced it into his own net.
25' TIMELY TACKLE
Mata goes down under a challenge from Williamson inside the box but there are no real claims for a penalty. Cole then fizzes a cross in from the left which is well gathered by Krul, especially in view of the wet conditions.
24' COMMUNICATION LACKING
There was almost a misunderstanding there between Cech and Luiz, similar to the incident which saw Manchester City concede a late goal last week. The Brazilian, though, takes charge and clears his lines.
22' REPEAT PERFORMANCE
Whatever result we get in this game could easily be replicated later in the season at Stamford Bridge. There were two home wins last season, two away wins the season before that and two draws in 2010-11.
19' DEFENDER A LITTLE GROGGY
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is slow to get to his feet inside the Newcastle area. It looks like he got a bang on the side of the head, but he will be fine.
18' ONE-WAY TRAFFIC
Chelsea are biting in the tackle today and winning the ball back quickly every time they lose it. It's almost like watching the Premier League's current experts at this pressing game, Southampton.
16' LEAKY DEFENCE
Only bottom two Crystal Palace and Sunderland have conceded more goals than Newcastle's 16 in the Premier League this season.
14' OFF THE CROSSBAR - TWICE
Oscar wins Chelsea their first corner of the match, and Mata's inswinger is headed against the bar by Terry. Ivanovic's volleyed follow-up is deflected against the top of the bar. Newcastle breathe again.
13' UNHAPPY HUNTING GROUND
Chelsea failed win in three trips to St James' Park in the league during Jose Mourinho's first spell in charge, losing once and drawing twice.
11' NEW DEAL FOR DUMMETT
Newcastle's Paul Dummett may be missing through injury today, but the club obviously rate him highly. They announced this morning that the young defender had signed a new deal that could see him remain at St James' Park for the next six years.
9' GOUFFRAN SHOT BLOCKED
Luiz is beaten far too easily but Ivanovic comes to his rescue by blocking a 25-yard blast from Gouffran.
7' TERRY TAKES A KNOCK
Age may be catching up with John Terry these days. The spirit is certainly no less willing, but perhaps not so much the body. He appears to have suffered a knock to his right shoulder that is causing some degree of pain.
5' WASTED FREE-KICK
Hazard wins Chelsea a free-kick 25 yards from goal after a trip by Williamson. The effort from Luiz is wayward and the referee had spotted an infringement anyway.
3' WEATHER REPORT
The heavens have opened at St James' Park, it is bucketing down at present. Perfect weather for sliding tackles.
2' MINUTE'S SILENCE
As this is Newcastle's last home match before Remembrance Sunday there was a minute's silence before kick-off to remember the fallen. Nor a murmur from the crowd, well done to them.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' TEAM NEWS
Both sides make two changes. Paul Dummett is injured for Newcastle, so Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa plays in central defence and Hatem Ben Arfa is dropped with Shola Ameobi coming into the side. Jose Mourinho prefers David Luiz to Gary Cahill in central defence and Juan Mata keeps his place after his midweek goal, with Andre Schurrle dropping out.
0' PREVIEW
Newcastle entertain Chelsea in the Premier League's early kick-off on Saturday with the pressure beginning to grow on home boss Alan Pardew. The Toon have endured a week to forget, losing to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday and then bowing out of the League Cup after extra time to Manchester City in midweek. Pardew knows he could be running out of time to turn things around and his relationship with owner Mike Ashley is already strained after Joe Kinnear was brought in above him as director of football in the close season. By contrast, all is sweetness and light with Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea side after one of their best weeks for a while. They scored a late winner to beat fellow title chasers Manchester City last weekend and followed up with an equally impressive win at London rivals Arsenal in midweek, profiting from defensive blunders in both matches. Newcastle are going to have to be at their best here to stand any chance, and with Chelsea looking increasingly difficult to break down they cannot afford to fall behind in this one. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
We've all been critical of Fernando Torres these past couple of years and with some justification because so many of his performances have been disappointing. But credit where it's due, the Spaniard was a real menace against Manchester City last Sunday, looking hungry and reminiscent of the striker who proved unstoppable when he first arrived on these shores with Liverpool. Torres also scored the last-minute winner against the Citizens, his first goal in the Premier League in 2013 and will be keen to show that he has managed to rediscover his best when so many were doubting we would ever see it again. It will be interesting to see Jose Mourinho's team selection. One of the Premier League's most gifted players, Juan Mata, has been out of favour because he does not work hard enough on the defensive side of the game in the mind of his manager. But the Spain midfielder scored a blinding goal at Arsenal on Wednesday and it would be criminal to relegate him back to the bench against a Newcastle side that is suspect defensively.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 54 wins to 46 by Newcastle and 36 games being drawn. At St James' Park, Newcastle have 35 wins to 16 by Chelsea, with a further 17 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Feb. 2 was a five-goal thriller. Jonas Gutierrez gave the home side a 41st-minute lead, only for Chelsea to grab the initiative with two goals in six minutes from Frank Lampard (55) and Juan Mata (61). Newcastle, though, fought back to win thanks to two goals on his home debut from Moussa Sissoko, the second coming in the final minute. Chelsea had won the earlier meeting between the sides at Stamford Bridge on Aug. 25 2-0, with first-half goals from Eden Hazard (penalty) and Fernando Torres.
0' FORM GUIDE
Newcastle start the day in 11th place with 11 points from nine games, three clear of the relegation zone. They have won once in four games at home, beating Fulham by a solitary goal on the last day of August. They kept clean sheets in two of their first three games of the season, but have conceded in their last six in the league. Chelsea can go top of the table for a few hours at least with a win. They currently sit second on 20 points, two points behind leaders Arsenal. The Blues may be a perfect five out of five at home, but their away form is more modest, with a single victory in four outings, which came last time out at Norwich. Mourinho's men are flying at the moment, though, with six straight victories in all competitions, netting 18 goals in the process.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Newcastle are likely to be without captain Fabricio Coloccini again as continues to recover from a groin problem. Central defensive partner Steven Taylor is some weeks away from a return having suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in training last week. Paul Dummett (hamstring) is also out, so Mike Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa are likely to play in the centre of defence. Chelsea have no new injury problems and Jose Mourinho will likely reshuffle his side again having made 10 changes for the midweek League Cup win at Arsenal.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Mason, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2006. The man from Lancashire has dished out 24 cautions in his six top-flight games to date and produced one red card, to West Ham's Mark Noble for two bookable offences in the home defeat by Everton in September. He dismissed three players last season, one of whom was Chelsea's Brazil midfielder Ramires in the win at Aston Villa in May. Mason's assistants today are Simon Long and Simon Bennett, while Bobby Madley is the fourth official.
