Arsenal vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ARSENAL 2 LIVERPOOL 0
Arsenal go five points clear at the top of the table after seeing off nearest rivals Liverpool at the Emirates. Both Gunners goals were special. Santi Cazorla opened the scoring on 19 minutes, reacting quickest to lash a first-time volley into the roof of the net after his initial header had come back off the post. That paled into mediocrity compared to the second just before the hour from Aaron Ramsey. The Wales midfielder collected the ball in a central position and sent a dipping drive out of the reach of Simon Mignolet and just under the crossbar. It could have been more, Mignolet making good saves to deny both Tomas Rosicky and Ramsey and Olivier Giroud chipping wastefully wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Liverpool's best opening fell to Suarez midway through the second half, the Uruguayan's improvised effort striking the outside of the post. With Dortmund away to come in the Champions League on Wednesday followed by a trip to Old Trafford next Sunday, a crucial nine days for the Gunners could not have started any better.
90' TIME RUNNING DOWN
We are nearing the end of three minutes of added time.
90' NEARLY NUMBER THREE
Ozil goes close to adding a third, but his shot strikes Mignolet in the chest and rebounds to safety. Jenkinson is shown the yellow card for a foul.
88' SUAREZ SHOOTS WIDE
Liverpool waste a great chance after some lax defensive play from Arsenal. Suarez only has the goalkeeper to beat coming in from the left, but shoots wide of the post.
85' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
More defensive cover for Arsenal. Carl Jenkinson replaces goal-scorer Santi Cazorla.
84' SZCZESNY STAYS STRONG
Sturridge collects the ball in a dangerous position near the byeline on the left, but Szczesny snuffs out the chance. The Arsenal goalkeeper than smothers a cross from Coutinho after some Liverpool head tennis had crafted a half-chance.
82' TIME RUNNING OUT
Famous last words, but there's little sign here that Liverpool are going to find a way back into this game. Coutinho - normally a class act - has been absolutely dreadful in his return from injury as a substitute.
79' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Gibbs' day is done, with Thomas Vermaelen coming on in his place.
78' INJURY TO GIBBS
Gibbs does superbly down the left and crosses for Giroud, who sees the ball go under his foot. The France striker has been one of Arsenal's few players to disappoint tonight. Gibbs is down with a knee injury.
75' OFF THE POST
Liverpool come so close to pulling one back. The ball from the left won't fall kindly for Sturridge, but Suarez seizes on the chance with a shot with the outside of his right foot that hits the outside of the post.
72' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal replace Rosicky with Nacho Monreal, a defensive switch.
71' STURRIDGE HEADS OVER
Henderson crosses superbly from the right, but Sturridge makes a mess of a free header, the ball hitting his shoulder and looping over the bar.
70' TACTICAL CHANGES
Henderson has slipped into a right-back role to accommodate the arrival of Moses.
68' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Liverpool make a second change with Victor Moses replacing Flanagan.
67' KOSCIELNY IMPRESSING
Suarez thinks a shooting chance is coming his way but Koscielny, who has been impressive so far, gets in a timely challenge.
66' FINAL BALL LACKING
Liverpool have seen enough of the ball in the attacking third of the field, but time and again the final pass has been lacking the quality required.
64' GIBBS SHOT BLOCKED
Arsenal are on fire here. Gibbs collects a pass from Cazorla on the overlap down the left and shoots for goal, only for Skrtel's back to get in the way.
61' WHAT A SECOND GOAL
It's a cracking strike from Ramsey. Ozil found him with a pass in from the right but there was still plenty to do. The young midfielder steadied himself before unleashing a shot from 22 yards with pace and dip that did not give Mignolet a hope. A wonderful goal.
60' GOAL: ARSENAL 2 LIVERPOOL 0
Aaron Ramsey scores a blinding second goal for Arsenal.
59' GIROUD DENIED AGAIN
Arsenal break swiftly and confidently. Cazorla slides a pass in to Giroud, who hits the target this time but finds Mignolet in the way of his toe-poked effort.
57' WILL MISS BE COSTLY
Arsenal could have done with that second goal. Liverpool have started the second half as brightly as they did the first.
56' LET-OFF FOR LIVERPOOL
Toure gives the ball away with a dreadful back-pass. Giroud only has the goalkeeper to beat, but chips wide. A clear opportunity is wasted.
53' GOOD BUY OR GOODBYE?
I'm sorry, nothing you say will ever convince me Jordan Henderson is worth 16 million of your English pounds. Or 25.6 million US dollars for that matter.
51' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
Suarez is fine. He latches on to a ball down the inside-left channel and finds Henderson at the far post. The former Sunderland man shoots over.
50' SUAREZ LIMPING
Suarez turns his man and gets to the byeline. The cross-shot is over-hit and the Uruguayan comes up limping after a desperate challenge by Koscielny.
49' SAKHO STRUGGLING
Mamadou Sakho is struggling with a knee injury he collected after a foul challenge by Ramsey. He will see if he can run it off.
48' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
Arsenal can go five points clear at the top following Chelsea's defeat earlier in the day. Liverpool, of course, can go top should they be able to turn this game on its head in the second half.
47' CHANGE FOR LIVERPOOL
Liverpool have made a change at the break with Philippe Coutinho replacing Aly Cissokho and the visitors reverting to a flat back four.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way.
45' HT: ARSENAL 1 LIVERPOOL 0
Santi Cazorla's 19th-minute goal means that Premier League leaders Arsenal take a deserved lead into the break. The Spain midfielder netted at the second attempt, blasting home having seen his initial header come back off the post. Liverpool had started brightly, but the goal clearly knocked them out of their stride. Simon Mignolet had already made one excellent save to deny Tomas Rosicky when the game was still goalless and was called upon again to save from Aaron Ramsey, otherwise the Gunners would have been in total control. Liverpool's best opening fell the way of Jordan Henderson, but his finish was unconvincing and Arsenal were left counting their blessings that the chance had not fallen the way of Daniel Sturridge or Luis Suarez.
45' WIDE FROM CAZORLA
Cazorla screws a shot wide of the upright as we enter first-half stoppage time.
45' SHORT OF OPTIONS
Arsenal's bench looks bare by comparison. Nicklas Bendtner, anyone? Thought not.
43' ATTACKING OPTIONS
Brendan Rodgers will be considering his attacking options for the second half. He has Coutinho, Moses and Sterling to call upon from the bench.
40' TOP GUNS FLYING HIGH
The Gunners' return of 22 points from nine matches is their best start to a season since they had 25 from nine games in 2007. They drew their 10th match that season against Liverpool.
37' CLEVER TURN FROM STURRIDGE
Sturridge does magnificently to leave Koscielny on his backside with a clever turn, but he runs the ball out for a goal-kick having looked like he might threaten Arsenal's goal.
35' FLAG UP AGAIN
Liverpool think they have created a clear opening, but Sturridge set off just too early with his run and the linesman rightly raises his flag for offside.
34' CAUGHT IN TWO MINDS
Giroud's excellent lay-off picks out Ramsey inside the area, but the Welshman is caught in two minds and eventually gives the ball away.
32' TAME SHOT BY STURRIDGE
Sturridge carries the ball forward but there is no venom behind his shot from the edge of the box and that is easy for Szczesny.
30' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
Liverpool's Cissokho is booked for a poor challenge on Sagna near the right touchline.
28' MIGNOLET SAVES AGAIN
Arsenal threaten again. Rosicky feeds Ramsey, whose left-foot drive forces Mignolet into a good save to his left.
27' CAUGHT OFFSIDE
From the free-kick Szczesny denies Toure with his right foot, not knowing that the flag had gone up for offside.
26' ARSENAL BOOKING
Sagna hauls down Suarez from behind and is rightly cautioned. Liverpool wanted to take the free-kick quickly, but Mr Atkinson was having none of it.
24' CLASS IN ATTACK
Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud both have five goals and four assists this season. The only Premier League player to be involved in more goals is Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge with eight goals and two assists.
22' CAZORLA DENIED A SECOND
Liverpool are rattled. They give the ball away and present Cazorla with another chance. His 20-yard strike forces Mignolet into a flying save.
20' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a great goal from the Spaniard. Arsenal had men over at the back as Sagna's cross came in from the right. Cazorla stooped to head against the right-hand upright and quick as a flash was there to ram home the rebound.
19' GOAL: ARSENAL 1 LIVERPOOL 0
Santi Cazorla puts Arsenal in front.
18' NOT SHORT OF GOALS
Liverpool have failed to score just once in their last 17 away matches dating back to November 2012.
16' NERVY AT THE BACK
A nervy punch from Szczesny concedes an unnecessary corner. Arsenal's defence clears eventually, but there was momentary panic when it appeared the loose ball might fall to a Liverpool attacker.
15' TAKING NO PRISONERS
Koscielny got good value for his foul on Suarez there, a knee in the back and a kick on the knee for good measure.
13' SHOWING RESPECT
Suarez gets booed at most away grounds, but not today. Gunners fans must still be hopeful he can be enticed south in the January transfer window.
10' POOR EFFORT FROM HENDERSON
Henderson carries the ball away from the halfway line and Arsenal back off and back off. The former Sunderland man is gasping for breath as he reaches the penalty area and scuffs his shot horribly. That really was a woeful effort.
9' WILSHERE OUT WITH A KNOCK
Jack Wilshere is not in the Arsenal 18 today. His manager says he has picked up a slight ankle injury.
6' SUPER STOP FROM MIGNOLET
The tackles are flying in early on. Rosicky plays a one-two with Cazorla and his low angled drive forces Mignolet into a fine save.
5' HOPES FOR AN EARLY GOAL
Don't be surprised if we see an early goal. Both these sides have netted four times in the opening 15 minutes of matches this season, which is tops in the Premier League.
4' TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
That Johnson illness sounds nasty. Reports suggest he has been taken to hospital.
3' BIG GAME FOR FLANAGAN
Manager Brendan Rodgers said Glen Johnson had been ruled out by illness today. He added he had no worries about throwing youngster Jon Flanagan into the fray, “His attitude and quality have been brilliant while I have been here,” Rodgers said.
1' HERE WE GO
Liverpool kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Arsenal make one change to the side that beat Crystal Palace, with Tomas Rosicky coming in for the injured Mathieu Flamini. Glenn Johnson is ruled out for Liverpool, so Jon Flanagan gets a rare start.
0' PREVIEW
First faces third in the game of the weekend when Arsenal host Liverpool in Saturday's late game in the Premier League. Top flight fixtures don't get much more mouth-watering than this one, with both sides full of attacking flair and slightly suspect on the defensive side of the ball. In Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, we have three of English football's brightest stars on view and a trio who are likely to be in the running for player of the season honours come next May. Then there is the juicy sub-plot that Suarez wanted to leave the Reds in the summer and head south to Arsenal, who had two substantial bids rejected. “I understand why Arsenal would want to buy a player of Luis' quality because he is one of the leading strikers in the world but it was something that was never going to happen,” Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said this week. “This was the place for Luis to showcase his talents. He is a player, like some of our other players, who deserves to be playing at the highest level of European football but we believe he can do that at Liverpool.” The visitors need to take something from the game, not least to prove to Suarez that they can be legitimate contenders and thereby head off any thought that the Uruguayan might try to engineer a move away again when the January transfer window comes around. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
There are stars on show wherever you look and none more potent that the partnership between Liverpool strike pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Suarez netted a hat-trick against West Brom last time out, taking his total to six goals in four games since he returned from suspension. Sturridge has been on fire all season with eight goals in nine league games and Arsenal's central defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker will have their hands full. Brendan Rodgers has employed a 3-5-2 formation to accommodate his twin strikers, but the trade-off has been that it has left them more vulnerable in defence. They haven't kept a single clean sheet with this system, having started the season with three in a row when playing a standard back four.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 69 wins to 62 by Arsenal and 47 games being drawn. In north London, Arsenal have 38 wins to 21 by Liverpool, with a further 30 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Jan. 30 was an entertaining 2-2 draw. Liverpool looked to be cruising with goals from Luis Suarez (5 mins) and Jordan Henderson (60), but Arsenal hit back to earn a point with two goals in three minutes from Olivier Giroud (64) and Theo Walcott (67). Arsenal won the first meeting between the sides last season 2-0 at Anfield on Sep. 2, with goals from Lukas Podolski (31) and Santi Cazorla (68). The Gunners have lost only one of the past 12 meetings, but seven of those have been draws. Liverpool are one of just two teams still to be beaten away from home in the Premier League, today's opponents being the other.
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal start the day top of the table with 22 points from nine games, two points better than Liverpool who are third behind Chelsea by virtue of having a slightly inferior goal difference. The Gunners kicked off the season with a shock home defeat by Aston Villa, but since then have dropped only two points, in a 1-1 draw with West Brom on Oct. 6. They have, though, suffered defeats in their last two matches at the Emirates, to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League 11 days ago and to Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Mikel Arteta is available again for Arsenal having served the one-match ban he picked up for his sending off at Crystal Palace last weekend. The Arsenal injury list is long, with Mathieu Flamini (groin), Serge Gnabry (ankle), Theo Walcott (abdominal surgery), Yaya Sanogo (back), Lukas Podolski (hamstring), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (both knee) all ruled out. Philippe Coutinho is back in the Liverpool squad having recovered from an operation on the shoulder injury he suffered at Swansea on Sep. 16. Jose Enrique is still sidelined with a knee problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Martin Atkinson, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2005 and who became a FIFA referee a year later. The West Yorkshire-based official had a reputation as being one of the Premier League's strictest referees, showing nine red cards in 27 games in 2011-12. But last season he dismissed just the one player, Newcastle's Cheick Tiote at the Stadium of Light in the Wear-Tyne derby. That was all the way back in October, with Atkinson now having gone 37 games in all competitions without producing a red card. His assistants today are Stuart Burt and Mick McDonough, while Mike Jones is the fourth official.
