Manchester United vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' MATCH SUMMARY
It wasn't perhaps a classic in the mould of past Manchester United vs. Arsenal clashes, but there was no denying the battling endeavour of both sets of players, with league leaders Arsenal finding themselves enveloped in a war of attrition with a proud United side keen to show they're still serious about retaining their Premier League title. From the off, the red shirts got stuck into their opponents with Phil Jones enjoying a supreme first half as he looked to drive forward play from midfield, and tackling tirelessly in defence. Robin van Persie gave United the lead on 26 minutes, powering a header beyond Szczesny from Wayne Rooney's corner, and the home side deserved it, having comfortably stifled their visitor's creativity - £47 million-man Mesut Ozil had a particularly ineffectual afternoon. Nemanja Vidic had been bullying Olivier Giroud in the first-half, but was taken off at half-time after being caught by David de Gea's knee as the Spaniard went for a cross. After half-time, Arsene Wenger's side attacked with new purpose but found a new defensive partnership - Jonny Evans and Jones - holding firm. Arsenal's biggest threats came from wide, with Bacary Sagna constantly looking to deliver into the area; but the limitations of their bench were made clear with Jack Wilshere, Serge Gnabry and Nicklas Bendtner struggling to make an impact after coming on. Bendtner could have equalised from Sagna's great cross close to full-time, failing to make contact with a low ball across the six yard box by inches. However it was the best the visitors had to show in a game where they were pressed, harried and hustled by United - Wayne Rooney in particular at the heart of absolutely everything. It certainly wasn't a vintage Manchester United performance, but it's a big win and one which puts them up into fifth position. Arsenal remain top, but are only two points clear of second-placed Liverpool. They are now only five ahead of United too, who are now unbeaten in nine games across all competitions. Thank you for joining us here at Old Trafford.
90' FULL-TIME
Sir Alex Ferguson is in the stands and is willing the referee to blow up along with most of the 80,000 in attendance. Michael Oliver obliges and that is a huge win for David Moyes and Manchester United. They are now just five points off the pace at the top of the league.
90' GREAT CHANCE FOR NICKLAS BENDTNER
So close from Arsenal! A wonderful cross from Sagna from the right evades the United defence and Bendtner is inches from getting his right boot to the ball from five yards out. If he'd made contact that would have been in for sure.
90' INTO INJURY TIME...
Three minutes of injury time. Arsene Winger isn't happy with that and demands more from the fourth official who, unsurprisingly, doesn't change the numbers on the board.
89' ARSENAL GETTING DESPERATE
Wayne Rooney gives the ball away and Serge Gnabry plays it low across the edge of the area to Bendtner. Bendtner finds the overlapping Gibbs on the left but Chris Smalling takes the ball off him. Smalling has been excellent today, Gibbs not so.
85' MANCHESTER UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Marouane Fellaini comes on for goal scorer Robin van Persie.
84' ARSENAL THROWING THE KITCHEN SINK
Suddenly there's space for Arsenal as a great ball from Jack Wilshere sets Aaron Ramsey free down the right. He plays it into Olivier Giroud who feints to shoot, allowing Chris Smalling to get a foot to the ball. From the second wave of attack, Ramsey runs into bodies in the area but the ball breaks to Giroud, whose effort is deflected for a corner that ultimately comes to nothing.
82' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal's final throw of the dice will see Serge Gnabry replace Mikel Arteta.
80' CHRIS SMALLING GOLDEN CHANCE
Patrice Evra looks to have the beating of Jack Wilshere who, in frustration, pulls him down. That's a booking. The free-kick from Robin van Persie eludes everyone and Chris Smalling has a free header on goal from six yards out. The defender makes a pig's ear of it though and barely brushes the ball as it goes out for a goal kick.
78' SUBSTITUTIONS FROM BOTH TEAMS
For Manchester United, Ryan Giggs is on for Shinji Kagawa while Arsenal bring on Nicklas Bendtner for Santi Cazorla.
76' ARSENAL REDUCED TO LONG RANGE
Ozil's corner is dealt with but the clearance only goes as far as the midfield. Koscielny and Gibbs both attempt long range efforts, the second running through to de Gea harmlessly.
74' WAYNE ROONEY CAUTIONED
Wayne Rooney isn't getting away with that one. A period of United pressure breaks down and an angry Rooney clatters Aaron Ramsey as he attempts to break away from the Arsenal area. It's a booking for the striker and, from the Arsenal free-kick, they force another corner.
72' ARSENAL PRESSURE
Mesut Ozil isn't having a good game at all and he's humiliated after first giving the ball away and then being nutmegged by Phil Jones. Great stuff from the United man. Arsenal come back again though and play patiently around the edge of the United area before finding Sagna in space on the right. His cross is dangerous and Jonny Evans has to put it out for a corner.
70' MESUT OZIL WASTES OPPORTUNITY
Bacary Sagna picks out Mesut Ozil with a long ball into the Manchester United area. Ozil is between the two centre defenders but pulls up instead of trying to get his head to the ball with the goal beckoning - what was the German thinking!?
68' ARSENAL STRUGGLING TO BREAK DOWN DEFENCE
Arsenal are now starting to play it short, trying to keep a hold of possession and waiting for openings to appear. There aren't any appearing though and eventually Jack Wilshere is bundled off the ball on the edge of the United penalty area. Wayne Rooney charges up the other end to put pressure on Thomas Vermaelen as the ball is cleared and thunders into him on the touchline. He receives a lecture by Michael Oliver for his troubles.
65' SANTI CAZORLA GETS ONE RIGHT
A good pass from Cazorla on the right between the two United centre backs plays Jack Wilshere into space. The England midfielder is in the penalty area but is muscled off the ball by Phil Jones and then brings him down trying to regain possession.
64' ARSENAL FREE-KICK
Mesut Ozil is trying to find space down the right but is pulled over by Patrice Evra. It's an Arsenal free-kick, to be taken by Cazorla. Phil Jones heads away his cross and then Wayne Rooney clears the second cross from Sagna from the left.
60' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Jack Wilshere is on for Arsenal. He replaces Mathieu Flamini - can he make the difference for Arsene Wenger?
59' WAYNE ROONEY CHANCE
Wayne Rooney has a chance up the other end, turning Koscielny and dragging a left-foot drive agonisingly wide of the right post.
58' AARON RAMSEY SHOT
Aaron Ramsey has been quiet today but has an effort on goal as he runs forward. His right footed drive from range is tame though and trundles into de Gea's arms.
57' MESUT OZIL SHOT ON GOAL
Arsenal have another corner and take it quickly, with Ozil putting a cross in from the left. It's only partly cleared at the far post and Sagna puts the ball back across to the left and Ozil. The German lets fly from the edge of the penalty area, hitting the side netting of the United goal.
55' SANTI CAZORLA WASTEFUL DISTRIBUTION
Arsenal win a corner but Santi Cazorla's ball from the right is poor and United can break. They lose the ball and the Londoners come back, only for another weak cross from Cazorla to end the threat. It goes out for a goal kick.
51' OZIL TRYING TO GET INTO THE GAME
Mesut Ozil runs forward into the United half with two in tow. He finds Olivier Giroud in the centre of the field who returns the ball but then stops running, meaning the German's final pass is straight at a home defender. It's been a poor showing from Giroud today.
48' THOMAS VERMAELEN FREE-KICK
Thomas Vermaelen has a go from the free-kick. His attempt is awful though, skewing high and wide. A waste.
47' ARSENAL START WITH INTENT
United give the ball away in midfield and Mesut Ozil has space for the first time in the game. He finds Ramsey from the right; the Welshman drives a low shot into the legs of Phil Jones from the edge of the penalty area. Arsenal come back again and sub Cleverley fouls Olivier Giroud nearly 30 yards out.
46' SECOND PERIOD BEGINS
As Arsenal get us under way for the second period, I bring you news of a change. As expected, Nemanja Vidic isn't returning to the field and Tom Cleverley comes on. Phil Jones will revert to centre back with that substitution. It's potentially good news for Olivier Giroud, who was being bullied by Vidic in that first period.
45' HALF-TIME SUMMARY
It's 1-0 at Old Trafford and Manchester United deserve their lead. In a game that's been low on clear cut chances, the hosts were efficient in dispatching their best opportunity, with Robin van Persie losing his marker with a run from deep to meet Wayne Rooney's left-hand corner with his head, powering it past Szczesny in the Arsenal goal. That goal came at around 26 minutes in the first half and followed an opening where the Reds had enjoyed both most of the possession and territory. The home side have been energetic in coming forward if not exactly concise, with Phil Jones surging up field with regularity and Wayne Rooney working hard, even if his control has let him down on a couple of occasions. The England forward had a soft penalty appeal turned down, believing he was tripped by Oliver Giroud; van Persie meanwhile has pressed hard but has had little to show for it beyond his deadlock-breaking goal. Arsenal however have been firing blanks, final balls from Ramsey and Gibbs in particular too often going astray. With Mesut Ozil being starved of possession, they've not enjoyed any clear chances on goal and currently lack the spark to unlock United's defence. Worryingly for the hosts, skipper Nemanja Vidic went off just before half-time, after taking a knee to the head from his own keeper, David de Gea. Apart from that, though, David Moyes should be happy with his side, who have constricted the league leaders and have looked comfortable doing so.
45' HALF-TIME
Michael Oliver blows the whistle for half-time. Manchester United a goal to the good against league leaders Arsenal thanks to a Robin van Persie header.
45' NEMANJA VIDIC INJURED
A last chance for Arsenal to equalise before half-time comes to nothing as Bacary Sagna's cross from the Arsenal right is punched clear by David De Gea. The young Spaniard's knee catches Vidic as he does so, however, and the Serbian falls spread-eagled in the United six yard box. The stretcher's on and it's not looking too good for the Reds' skipper. However, he makes his way off the field on his own two feet. Tough as old boots that man.
45' ROY HODGSON IN THE CROWD
England manager Roy Hodgson is in the crowd. Of his England charges, it'll surely be Phil Jones who he's been impressed the most by. The midfielder has been everywhere this first half, driving play forward with enthusiasm and tackling tirelessly in front of his back four.
43' MATHIEU FLAMINI BOOKED
Mathieu Flamini is booked after coming in late on Phil Jones.
41' PHIL JONES BOOKED
Another corner for Manchester United after Sagna blocks Kagawa's cross. There's a collision and Szczesny goes down after a clash of heads with Phil Jones. As the keeper receives treatment on the ground, Jones is booked, which seems harsh indeed - he couldn't have pulled out of that one. Over-sensitivity being shown after the Lloris incident for Spurs the other day perhaps?
38' MANCHESTER UNITED PENALTY SHOUT
Arsenal get themselves in a mess after Giroud intercepts Evra's ball from the left but then gives it away to Rooney in the Arsenal area. Rooney hits the deck after a desperate challenge is put in to get the ball back, and the penalty shouts go up - not given by Michael Oliver. Correct call.
35' FINAL BALL LACKING FOR ARSENAL
One of the men of the season so far, Aaron Ramsey, is on the right and cuts in past two United players before putting a low ball into the United box. It's aimless though and once again United deal with it without too much difficulty.
33' DAVID DE GEA DEFENDS CORNER WELL
Arsenal have a corner that's taken by Cazorla. It's a short one and he takes the return ball on the Arsenal left before whipping a good cross into the Manchester United area. De Gea is all over that one though and puts a commanding punch in that sends the ball up towards the centre circle.
31' ARSENAL NOT CLICKING
Vermaelen attempts a lofty through ball to Giroud but it's wayward. Arsenal really haven't clicked into gear yet; they retain the ball and Santi Cazorla gets ready to pull the trigger from 20 yards but he's blocked by an impressive Phil Jones.
28' HOW WILL ARSENAL RESPOND?
That was a great header from van Persie, who scores his seventh league goal of the season, peeling off from his marker at the near post. Ramsey should have been closer to him, but there wasn't much Szczesny could have done about it in goal. Right then, Arsenal, time to prove how seriously you want to be taken.
26' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Robin van Persie opens against his old club from Wayne Rooney's corner! They've had the better of it so far and that's a deserved lead on the balance of play.
25' WAYNE ROONEY WORKING HARD
Wayne Rooney isn't having a great game so far. A flick in the centre of the field doesn't come off; however he can't be faulted for his work ethic and he wins the ball back before haring down the left and sending in a cross that's cleared only for a corner by Arsenal.
24' KOSCIELNY HANDLING VAN PERSIE PRESSURE
Arsenal's first real series of passes sees Gibbs and Cazorla combine on the left find Giroud in the centre. There's still no way through for the striker though and, with United clearing, Koscielny finds himself one on one with van Persie on the United left. He does exceptionally well, playing the ball off the Dutchman for an Arsenal throw in. He was under a lot of pressure there but handled it well.
19' WAYNE ROONEY ALMOST THROUGH
Phil Jones isn't known for his quick feet so he opts for brutal directness in trying to go past three Arsenal players into the penalty area. The visitors clear but a long ball back from defence almost puts Rooney through as Arsenal push up to try and catch van Persie offside. A sliding tackle from Vermaelen dispossesses the forward.
17' ARSENAL ENJOYING MORE OF THE BALL
Mesut Ozil is starting to warm to the game too. He runs down the right of the field and plays the ball in to Giroud. The Frenchman is dispossessed by a backtracking Phil Jones and, in a similar occurrence to van Persie's earlier foul, is adjudged to have impeded the English midfielder trying to win the ball back.
15' GIROUD STARTING TO GET INTO GAME
van Persie is dispossessed by Vermaelen and is then ruled to have fouled him in an attempt to win the ball back. The Dutchman isn't happy but it puts Arsenal on the front foot. Giroud takes a long ball in the penalty area and for a fleeting second has some space. He's closed down though, before Ozil is tumbled over on the area by Jonny Evans. No foul apparently and United come away with the ball.
12' MODERATE START TO THE GAME
Bacary Sagna is limping after a foul by Evra but looks ok to continue. The atmosphere at Old Trafford is red hot, although the play isn't quite up to that standard yet. Wayne Rooney attempts to inject some pace into the game though, bursting down the left wing. However, he trips over his own feet a little as he tries to pull back inside his marker and the ball runs out of play. Oops.
9' RARE ARSENAL POSSESSION
Arsenal haven't had much possession yet and a foray into their opponent's half breaks down after Kieran Gibbs' ball into the centre goes astray. Shinji Kagawa then takes the ball down the left as United break and finds Wayne Rooney. Rooney has little option other than to shoot from 25 yards out and his low drive is easily gathered by Wojciech Szczesny.
6' UNITED PROBING FROM WIDE EARLY ON
Antonio Valencia battles his way down the right wing, under pressure from two Arsenal players. His cross into the centre is controlled by Kagawa but, with no one near him, he plays it out to the left and Patrice Evra. Evra's cross has the fans excited but it's plucked from the air by Szczesny.
5' EARLY UNITED PRESSURE
Wayne Rooney skips away from Arteta in midfield to create space and pushes play out to the United left. Former Gunner van Persie takes hold of the ball but finds himself crowded out on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area and the ball runs through to Szczesny.
2' MANCHESTER UNITED CORNER
An early corner for Manchester United is whipped in by van Persie but is cleared by the Arsenal defence. The home side have pushed straight into the league leader's half. They languish in eighth remember, eight points behind today's opponents - a win today is vital.
1' WE'RE UNDER WAY
We're off! Manchester United, wearing their familiar red shirts and white shorts, play right to left. Arsenal are in their change strip of yellow shirts and blue shorts.
0' TODAY'S REFEREE
You could hear a pin drop there among the capacity crowd here. Now Nemanja Vidic and Thomas Vermaelen can toss up with today's referee, Michael Oliver. Oliver was in charge six weeks ago at Old Trafford when United were handed a shock defeat by West Bromich Albion. The Reds have not lost since.
0' MINUTE'S SILENCE
The players are out on the field but, before the coin toss and the kick off, there will be a minute's silence for Remembrance Day.
0' TEAM NEWS REACTION
There's less than 10 minutes to go until kick off here at Old Trafford, so we'll take a quick glance over the team news. Arsenal fans may well be feeling slightly concerned at their side's threadbare bench, with a stomach bug ruling Tomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker out of proceedings. They will be more heartened by the news that Mathieu Flamini is in the starting line-up, while Thomas Vermaelen replacing Mertersacker. Jack Wilshere is only on the bench following his ankle injury. United play Shinji Kagawa on the left again - always a source of debate among their fans - with Phil Jones and Michael Carrick in central midfield. I'll be honest, folks, I cannot call this one either way. So, like a coward, I won't.
0' ARSENAL TEAM
Wojciech Szczesny, Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen, Kieran Gibbs, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud. SUBSTITUTES: Lukasz Fabianski, Carl Jenkinson, Nacho Monreal, Isaac Hayden, Serge Gnabry, Jack Wilshere, Nicklas Bendtner.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM
David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick, Shinji Kagawa, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie. SUBSTITUTES: Anders Lindegaard, Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez, Nani, Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Manchester United's Brazilian full back Rafael has an ankle problem and may miss out, while Danny Welbeck is also still out with a knee injury. However, Jonny Evans and Michael Carrick may return after back and calf problems respectively. Arsenal are hoping key midfielder Mathieu Flamini will be fit after a recent groin problem, while Jack Wilshere's ankle injury is also an issue. Their full injury list remains long: Theo Walcott, Yaya Sanogo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lukas Podolski and Abou Diaby are all still out.
0' ARSENAL PASSING LITMUS TEST SO FAR
Acclaim for Arsenal's start to the campaign has been tempered by the knowledge that they've played seven of the bottom ten clubs in the league, with many waiting to see how they got on against Liverpool last weekend before taking the Gunners' challenge for a first League title since 2004 – and their famous ‘Invincibles' - seriously. Well, they looked supreme in beating the Merseysiders 2-0 and followed that up with an even more impressive 1-0 away to Borussia Dortmund midweek in the Champions League. Say what you want about their squad looking thin, query what they'll do if Olivier Giroud gets injured or if their defence picks up a couple of knocks; but at the moment they are doing everything that title contenders should be doing. Now the bookies favourites to win the league come May, those odds will tumble further if they defeat their old rivals today.
0' ROONEY: 'WE CAN STILL WIN THE LEAGUE'
The tagline is that Moyes' United have been struggling this season and the league table certainly doesn't lie. The Reds are further behind Arsenal after just ten games than in any season in recent memory, with a tally of 17 points leaving them in eighth position. Yet there has been some improvement from the reigning champions: they're currently unbeaten in eight games across all competitions while the forward combination of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie remains frightening – the pair have scored 16 goals between them. Rooney certainly hasn't thrown in the towel on this campaign, in the week commenting: "We always believe. We believe we can go on and win the league. We have been in this position before and gone on to win titles. We are hitting form at the right time." A win today would certainly go a long way towards backing his words up.
0' WELCOME TO OLD TRAFFORD
Ryan Giggs' FA Cup semi-final wonder goal in 1999. Martin Keown vs. Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2003. ‘Pizzagate' in 2004. United's 2011 8-2 demolition job - there have been few rivalries as intense in English football over the past 20 years than Manchester United vs. Arsenal. During the Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger wars, the pendulum swung back and forth between the two clubs, the Scotsman ending his career very much in the ascendency over his old antagonist. However, with Fergie retiring, Wenger has pulled momentum back towards the Gunners – his side sit top of the Premier League, eight points clear of David Moyes' inherited United side. A win today could see the Reds' chances of retaining their league title stretched beyond hope, even at this early stage of the season. Welcome to Old Trafford, where we'll find out if their old adversaries are capable of providing a dagger blow to their season.
