Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: TOTTENHAM 2 MAN UTD 2
Spurs and United have to settle for a point apiece after an entertaining match at White Hart Lane. Twice the home side got themselves in front, but twice their own mistakes let the champions back into the game. Kyle Walker gave Tottenham the lead on 18 minutes with a free-kick that went under the wall, but then presented Wayne Rooney with the chance to level from close range 14 minutes later. Sandro gave Spurs the edge again nine minutes into the second half, finding the top corner with a wonderful 25-yard strike which deserved to win the game. But that lead lasted just three minutes. With defenders on hand, Hugo Lloris committed an error of judgement to rush off his line and felled Danny Welbeck in the process. Rooney stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, taking his tally for the season to eight in the Premier League.
90' LLORIS A LITTLE LUCKY
Lloris almost gifts United a winner from a Rooney corner, but gathers the ball at the second attempt.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into the first of three minutes of added time.
90' UNITED BOOKING
Vidic is shown the yellow card for a cynical trip on Defoe near the right-hand corner flag. If that had been central it would have been a sending-off.
89' PUSHING FOR A WINNER
United threaten, but Dawson makes a superb interception to cut out a cross from the right by Hernandez.
88' MORE TO COME
There's much to admire about Andros Townsend, but he would be a far more dangerous player if he looked up before delivering the final pass. So often the end product is lacking.
86' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Spurs make their final change. It's Gylfi Sigurdsson for Chadli.
85' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION BY UNITED
United make a double switch. Nani and Young replace Kagawa and Valencia.
82' JONES NOW SUSPENDED
That was the fifth yellow card of the season for Jones, who will serve a one-match ban and miss the midweek clash with Everton.
80' UNITED BOOKING
Jones is booked for a foul on Dembele and Spurs have a free-kick 25 yards out. Defoe's effort is blocked.
79' NOT FAR AWAY
Walker delivers a wicked cross from the right, but Townsend is just unable to get on the end of it.
78' UNITED BOOKING
Evra is cautioned for a shove on Townsend. It's a little harsh, Mr Dean has obviously remembered all the offences that preceded it and used the totting up procedure there.
76' PLAYING CATCH UP
United have dropped 15 points already this season, something they didn't do until April last season.
73' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United replace Welbeck with Javier Hernandez.
73' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Spurs make another change, Jermain Defoe taking the place of Soldado.
72' FREE-KICK BLOCKED
Jones fells Vertonghen 30 yards from goal, but Walker fires straight into the wall.
70' DAWSON LEFT STANDING
Welbeck does brilliantly to escape Dawson down near the byeline on the left, but he fails to pick out the decisive pass for Rooney at the end of his run.
68' TOUGH ON LENNON
I have to agree with the crowd over that Spurs substitution. Lennon was one of the most influential Tottenham players in the first half and can play on either flank. Nacer Chadli, by contrast, has done very little down the Spurs left.
66' WALKER ONLY JUST WIDE
Spurs win a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Walker makes good connection, but it is a yard wide of the right-hand upright.
65' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Spurs make the first switch of the match, Andros Townsend taking the place of Aaron Lennon. There are boos from the crowd at the change.
64' CHASING A HAT-TRICK
Evra whips in a great ball from the left, but Rooney fails to make good contact and the chance for a hat-trick is gone, for now.
62' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Rooney is body-checked by Chiriches and wins a free-kick on the right edge of the area. Rooney delivers, but the ball sticks in the wall.
59' GOALKEEPER CULPABLE
Andre Villas-Boas has to be furious. That's twice his side have let United back into the game. That is one of the weaknesses of Lloris's game, rushing off his line rashly. He never had to come for that one, the defence could have dealt with it.
58' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 2 MAN UTD 2
Rooney levels again, shooting down the middle past Lloris.
57' UNITED PENALTY
Lloris has tripped Welbeck and conceded a needless penalty. He receives the yellow card.
56' GOAL DETAILS
It's one of the goals of the season from the Brazilian. He collected the ball 25 yards from goal, cut inside Cleverley and let fly with a curling shot that arrowed into the top corner.
55' GOAL: TOTTENHAM 2 MAN UTD 1
Sandro scores a blinder to give Spurs the lead again!
54' ROONEY SOMETHING SPECIAL
Wayne Rooney is covering every blade of grass on this White Hart Lane pitch. One moment he is playing as a deep-lying midfielder, spraying passes to both flanks, the next he is in the box trying to get on the end of a cross.
52' MIXED DAY FOR WALKER
I wonder what the rest of the afternoon holds for Kyle Walker? He's already got a goal and an assist (on United's equaliser) today.
50' GIGGS WATCHING THE ACTION
Veteran Ryan Giggs has been given the day off today, so he will have to wait to make a landmark appearance after celebrating his 40th birthday on Friday.
48' UNITED PRESS AGAIN
Just like in the first half, United win an early corner. The Spurs defence is hesitant, but referee Dean saves them by spotting a handball against Vidic that few others inside this stadium saw.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United get the second half under way.
45' HT: TOTTENHAM 1 MAN UTD 1
It's all square at the break and Spurs will be gutted because they may feel they should be a goal or two to the good. United were in control in the early stages without threatening before Kyle Walker gave Tottenham the lead with a direct free-kick which went under the jumping United defenders in the wall. Roberto Soldado then shot over from a good position and Aaron Lennon fired straight at David de Gea when he might have done better. Moments after that chance went begging United levelled. Kyle Walker made a mess of a Phil Jones cross from the right, gifting Wayne Rooney a shooting opportunity which he was never going to miss. Since that 32nd-minute equaliser it's been quite even and it's very difficult to call which way this one is going to go.
45' UNITED CORNER
United win a corner in the one minute of added time. Rooney takes, but Spurs smuggle the ball clear.
43' JONES SHOOTS WIDE
Valencia pulls the ball back to Jones, who scuffs a shot well wide from just outside the area.
40' GREAT PLAY FROM LENNON
Lennon shrugs off the challenge of Evra and crosses, but Soldado and Paulinho don't gamble on the ball coming across and United escape. United's France left-back really has his hands full today.
37' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Vertonghen needs treatment on an injury to his left leg after a sliding tackle on Rooney.
33' GOAL DETAILS
It's a disaster for Spurs. Jones won the ball off Dembele on the right and crossed over the head of Rooney. The ball took Walker by surprise and he gifted it on a plate to Rooney, who beat Lloris from close range.
32' GOAL: SPURS 1 MAN UTD 1
Wayne Rooney levels for United.
31' ALMOST ANOTHER
Spurs almost double their lead. A superb pass by Soldado picks out the diagonal run of Lennon, who shoots straight at De Gea. The resulting cross from the England winger fizzes across the face of goal.
30' SOLDADO SHOOTS WIDE
Spurs break superbly this time. Soldado's flick finds Paulinho and is then on the end of the return ball. The Spaniard blasts into the stands.
27' LOOKING VULNERABLE
United look a little unsettled at the back, you feel Spurs could grab another one here. The home side, though, are not passing the ball well enough to exploit their opponents' deficiencies.
25' SUSPECT AT THE BACK
United have now not kept a clean sheet in their last ten away games, their worst run defensively since the 2002-03 season.
24' GOOD COVERING TACKLE
Valencia skips past Vertonghen as if he isn't there, but Chiriches is alert to the danger and makes an excellent covering tackle.
22' ALMOST A SECOND
Spurs go close to a second, Dawson hooking a right-foot shot goalwards from a right-wing corner. The effort hits a United defender but could so easily have ended up in the net.
20' THE WALL CRUMBLES
The United wall was dreadful there. Jones and Smalling expected a curler for the top corner. Walker's shot was low (not sure he meant it like that) and it went under their feet, giving De Gea no chance.
19' GOAL: SPURS 1 MAN UTD 0
Walker blasts the set-piece through the wall and Spurs lead!
18' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Paulinho draws a foul from Evans on the edge of the United area. This is a great shooting opportunity.
16' GREAT BLOCK FROM SANDRO
United have a great chance to open the scoring. Valencia squares the ball to Rooney, whose shot from 10 yards is superbly blocked by Sandro.
14' STEEL IN MIDFIELD
Tottenham are having trouble getting out of their own half at the moment. United are starting to boss the midfield exchanges.
12' FIRST SHOT ON TARGET
Soldado flicks the ball on to Lennon, who creates some space to get in a low shot that De Gea saves comfortably diving to his left.
11' SHORT OF GOALS
Spurs have really been struggling for goals at home. They have not netted in open play in 341 minutes of Premier League football at White Hart Lane. Only Palace have scored fewer goals at home in the top flight.
8' EVRA LUCKY TO ESCAPE
Early in the game or not, Evra really should have been cautioned for that foul. He's very lucky to get away with a warning.
7' OPENING WASTED
Evra catches Lennon with a late tackle but referee Mike Dean plays on. Spurs have a great position from which to attack, but Walker overruns the ball.
6' SLICK PASSING FROM UNITED
Some lovely one-touch football from United switches the attack from one flank to the other, but Kagawa undoes all the good work with a dreadful cross.
4' THAT'S GOING TO STING
Vertonghen is caught by a late tackle from Smalling. It's too early to get the yellow card out.
3' RARE START FOR CHADLI
This is just the fourth Premier League start for Nacer Chadli, who was a seven million pound capture from FC Twente in the summer.
2' EARLY SPURS CORNER
Chadli wins Spurs a corner inside the first minute. Walker delivers, but De Gea punches clear.
1' HERE WE GO
Tottenham kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS

United make four changes from the side that drew at Cardiff. In come Jones, Vidic, Kagawa and Welbeck. Out go Ferdinand, Januzaj, Fellaini and Hernandez.

0' PREVIEW
You've just suffered your worst Premier League defeat in almost 17 years and who does the fickle fixture computer throw at you in your next outing? It's not struggling Crystal Palace, rock-bottom Sunderland or slumping Fulham for Tottenham, but instead a visit from the reigning champions Manchester United. Andre Villas-Boas saw his side torn apart by Manchester City last Sunday and called the result “embarrassing”. Few would argue with that assessment as Tottenham conceded in 90 minutes the same number of goals they had in their previous 11 games. While a win would be nice, it is not a necessity. But they must play well and collect at least a point or there is a chance that their own fans could turn on them today. Not long ago United looked set for a year of rebuilding under new manager David Moyes, but a good run has seen them rise up the table to within touching distance of the Champions League places and Wednesday's 5-0 away demolition of Bayer Leverkusen in Europe's premier club competition was a warning for Spurs that nothing short of their best will do today. It's more than 12 years since a home Tottenham win over United. Boy, how three points today would life the gloom that has descended over White Hart Lane recently. Sunday's game kicks off at 1200GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Every week we seem to ask the same question about Spurs: how can a team so full of attacking intent score so few goals? Roberto Soldado appeared to hit the ground running with four goals in his first three games in all competitions, but has since scored just twice in ten games in the Premier League and none in the last three, all of which have seen Andre Villas-Boas' men fail to find the net. Soldado has not exactly been poor, but much more is expected of a player who cost 26 million pounds (42.5 million US dollars). Ryan Giggs celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday and will be hoping to play some part and become only the fourth outfield player to play in the Premier League to have reached that milestone. He did, however, play all 90 minutes in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen in midweek, so his manager may well feel he deserves a rest.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Manchester United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 76 wins to 36 by Tottenham and 40 games being drawn. At White Hart Lane, both sides have 25 wins apiece and there have been 26 draws. The corresponding match last season on Jan. 20 finished in a 1-1 draw. Robin van Persie's 25th-minute winner looked to have won it for United, but Clint Dempsey netted an equaliser in the last minute. That meant Tottenham took four points from the champions in 2012-13, having won a memorable match at Old Trafford 3-2 on Sep. 29, with goals from Jonny Evans (own goal, 2 mins), Gareth Bale (32) and Clint Dempsey (52), the London club ending their 23-year wait for a victory at Old Trafford with that result.
0' FORM GUIDE
Tottenham entered the latest round of matches in ninth place, their lowest position in the Premier League this season. They have 20 points from 12 games, three points fewer than at the same stage in 2012-13. United lie sixth with 21 points, six worse off than at the same stage last season. Only next-to-bottom Crystal Palace have scored fewer than the five that Spurs have managed at home this season, while United are the division's highest scorers on the road, with 12 from six games. While Spurs are winless in three, United are protecting a six-match unbeaten run.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Emmanuel Adebayor, who has seen limited action for Tottenham anyway this season, is an injury doubt with a groin problem. Christian Eriksen (ankle), Danny Rose (toe) and Harry Kane (back) are definitely missing. United have Marouane Fellaini available again after suspension and Nemanja Vidic (concussion) and Robin van Persie (groin) are in with an outside chance of making a return.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee has shown 29 yellow cards in his eight matches to date this season. He has also dismissed two players: Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was shown two yellow cards in the London derby at Tottenham and Swansea's Michel Vorm also saw red in a derby match, being expelled for a professional foul in the defeat at Cardiff. Dean's assistants today are Jake Collin and Peter Bankes, while Jon Moss is the fourth official.
