Stoke City vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
There haven't been many goals in the recent meetings between these two sides, but that all changed this afternoon in a superb contest at the Britannia Stadium. Chelsea took an early lead through a wonderful Andre Schurrle strike, and they can count themselves unfortunate that they went into half time level as Peter Crouch was the benefactor of a mistake from Petr Cech from a corner. The Potters started the second 45 minutes brightly, and got the reward their play had merited when Jonathan Walters set up Stephen Ireland to beautifully curl the ball in off the far post. The Blues didn't take long to respond though, as that man Schurrle drew his side level with a tremendous strike from the edge of the box. It was all very shaky from there on in, but there was still room for one piece of quality from substitute Oussama Assaidi. The attacker dribbled towards goal and let go with a rocket of a strike that nearly took the net off as it found the top corner. The home outfit held on during five nervous minutes of injury time for a massive win that puts them 12th in the league table. Chelsea slip down to third, but it is more than the league standings that will be concerning Jose Mourinho and his players tonight.
The full time whistle blows and Stoke have won a five-goal thriller at the Britannia Stadium.
Just 60 seconds are left on the clock, and the Stoke fans are crying out for the full time whistle. Frank Lampard blazes over from range and they have a goal kick - that could be that.
The only bad news for the home fans is that there will be five additional minutes at the Britannia Stadium. We are two minutes into that, and Chelsea are throwing everybody into the Stoke area to try and rescue this. Oussama Assaidi was booked for taking his shirt off while celebrating by the way - the stupidest rule in football? Possibly.
They'll do more than hang on for a point - they'll grab all three! It appears as though the Potters have won this one in the dying minutes, and in some fashion! Oussama Assaidi gets the ball on the left, charges towards goal, evades John Terry and releases a thunderbolt of a shot that finds the top corner. Unbelievable from the substitute, and the Stoke fans are in dreamland!
Stoke have surely won it as Oussama Assaidi scores in the 90th minute!
Stoke make another sub as we draw closer to injury time, with Glenn Whelan the man to make way. Wilson Palacios comes on for the hosts, and he will add a bit of steel to their midfield as they look to see this out for a point.
Cesar Azpilicueta picks up a booking after getting into a little scuffle with Marko Arnautovic on the touchline. That looked like something from the playground, with words exchanged between the two. I couldn't hear what was said, but it was probably something along the lines of "My dad's harder than your dad."
Mark Hughes takes off Jonathan Walters with just over five minutes left on the clock - Oussama Assaidi is the man to come on for the Potters.
Demba Ba is brought down on the edge of the Stoke area by Geoff Cameron and Frank Lampard is eyeing this one up. He gets his effort beyond the wall, but Asmir Begovic is down quickly to smother the substitute's attempt. A collective sigh of relief can be heard around the Britannia Stadium.
It looks as though there is only one team who wants to go for the win as we approach the final ten minutes - the Blues are peppering the Stoke area with crosses and long balls, but Shawcross and Wilson are heading everything away bravely. This is a big ten minutes in Mark Hughes' Stoke career you feel.
Chelsea aren't too far away from taking the lead as Samuel Eto'o gains possession after a spot of pinball in the area and scuffs a shot that beats Begovic, but crawls past the far post. There is another goal in this one - I can feel it.
Demba Ba is up in arms as he feels Ryan Shawcross barged him over in the area when tussling for a high ball. The former Newcastle striker may have a point, as Shawcross did seem to push him to the floor, but none of the other Chelsea players really appealed.
Neither of these sides are really taking this match by the scruff of the neck at the moment, and it is getting very scrappy. Stoke will certainly be the happier with the way this game is going, but it is there for the taking if anyone wants it.
The visitors use their remaining two options from the bench with 20 minutes still to play - Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel are withdrawn for Samuel Eto'o and Frank Lampard. Jose Mourinho is not content with a point here - he is going all out for the three points.
Stephen Ireland should score here, no doubt about it. Peter Crouch chests down a long ball into the box and holds it up for Ireland. When the midfielder receives it, he has just Cech to beat, but he leans back and skies his attempt when he looked sure to find the back of the net. Could the Potters come to regret that miss?
Eden Hazard works a bit of space on the left and curls a fine cross into the area, but Ramires, perhaps not expecting the ball to find its way all the way through to him, pulls out of it at the back stick with the goal gaping.
With the visitors firmly in the ascendancy after that equalising goal, Stoke are trying to kill the momentum of this game by passing the ball around. They have kept the ball for the last couple of minutes, and Mark Hughes will be very pleased with the mentality his players have shown since the break.
Jose Mourinho decides to make a change with an hour gone in this match - Demba Ba is on in place of Fernando Torres.
Oh my goodness, it is nearly a hat-trick for Schurrle. The Germany international plays a one-two with Torres before curling an audacious effort over Begovic and onto the frame of the bar. Desperately unlucky for the visitors there, but Schurrle looks hungry for more goals.
Pick that one out! Juan Mata takes a central free-kick that is headed out by the Stoke defence, but only as far as Schurrle who drills in a half volley from the edge of the area that finds the bottom corner of Asmir Begovic's net. We're level once more - what a game we have on our hands here!
Andre Schurrle levels matters with an absolute gem of a strike!
What a turnaround here! Chelsea are aggrieved as they feel there was a foul in the middle of the pitch when Walters beat Azpilicueta in the air, but the referee waves play on and the forward feeds Ireland on the edge of the box. The first half sub displays great composure and precision to find the far corner of the net, his left-footed curler going in off the post. Don't get too excited yet though Stoke fans.....
Stephen Ireland gives Stoke the lead at the Britannia Stadium!
A cross comes in from the right and Ryan Shawcross, who was still up there from an earlier corner, gets there before Gary Cahill but the angle was always against him and he can't find the target. Someone has though.....
The home side have definitely started this half better than they started the last as they are getting forward at every opportunity. Marko Aranutovic turns Cesar Azpilicueta with great strength, but his low cross is cleared away by John Obi Mikel.
Chelsea get the second 45 minutes started at the Britannia Stadium with the game evenly poised and anyone's for the taking.
For large parts of this first half Chelsea dominated proceedings and ran rings around the Stoke midfielders, but they have next to nothing to show for it so far as the scores are even as we go into the interval. The visitors deservedly went ahead after ten minutes when Andre Schurrle scored a fine individual goal as he dribbled past Shawcross and Whelan and did very well to find the far corner of Begovic's net from the angle. Half chances came and went for the Blues from then on in, with Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Ramires looking threatening. However, just after Stephen Ireland was inches away from getting on the end of a Jonathan Walters cross, Stoke equalised from a corner as Petr Cech completely misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Peter Crouch to calmly it through Ivanovic's legs and into the net. It was all Chelsea in the minutes leading up to half time, but the Potters started to defend more diligently as the first 45 minutes drew to a close. Can Chelsea reassert ther dominance, or will the hosts be boosted by their goal? The second half will reveal all in due time.
The half time whistle sounds, and we go into half time with the scores tied - it's Stoke 1-1 Chelsea.
There will be three additional minutes at the end of this first period, and two of them have already come and gone. Jose Mourinho will be seething going into the break you'd imagine.
The Potters could actually have scored minutes before their leveller, as Jonathan Walters nearly found Stephen Ireland in the middle of the area with a peach of a cross, but as the commentators would say, Ireland just couldn't grow enough to meet it.
They didn't look like scoring in a month of Sunday's but Chelsea's set-piece vagaries have helped Stoke enormously here! A corner is whipped in and Petr Cech comes but gets nowhere near it, and Peter Crouch brings it down and fires it through the legs of Ivanovic and into the net.
Peter Crouch equalises for Stoke with half time looming!
Branislav Ivanovic twists and turns his way into the penalty area and his pass is found by Ramires, whose snapshot is deflected behind by Marc Muniesa. That could have been going in, but the visitors will have to settle for a corner.
Finally the hosts force something of note as Walters gets his head on to a Stephen Ireland cross, but he can't get enough purchase on it and it drifts harmlessly wide. Chelsea break up the other end with Ramires and the Brazilian shoots straight at Begovic when he had Torres and Hazard either side of him.
The Potters haven't scored in their last four league meetings with the Blues, and that doesn't look like changing this afternoon, even with only 35 minutes gone. They haven't even had a half chance yet, and Walters and Crouch are really struggling to get into the game.
Juan Mata plays a clever ball inside to Torres, and the striker fires in a low cross on the turn, but his delivery finds no one in particular because there was only one Chelsea man in the box. Torres looks slightly bemused at that, and he has every right to.
It has been a dry five-minute spell as far as goalmouth action is concerned at the Britannia Stadium. Chelsea look extremely comfortable with their lead and are not pressing too hard for a second, while the home side look completely bereft of ideas.
After Andre Schurrle goes down unnecessarily in Ryan Shawcross' mind, the defender gives him a push in the back just to let the German know that he didn't approve of his actions. A little bit of handbags there to add some extra spice to a match that has been mostly one-way so far.
Space opens up for Hazard as Chelsea stream forward again, and he has to decide whether to go it himself or pass inside to Fernando Torres. In the end he does neither really, and Begovic can easily claim a poor final ball from the Blues winger.
Glenn Whelan gives up possession in his own half and Eden Hazard springs forward with options either side of him - the Belgian uses Brainslav Ivanovic on the right, but the full-back's shot is so bad it actually goes out for a throw-in. I could have done better than that, and I don't cost millions of pounds. Tut tut.
This has been a very comfortable first 20 minutes for Jose Mourinho's men, and the Stoke fans haven't had anything to get their teeth into yet. The visitors are spraying the ball around nicely and looking threatening every time they get forward. The next goal is absolutely crucial in this match.
Charlie Adam will not be able to continue here, and his last action is to lose the ball in a promising position in the Chelsea area. The Scotsman limps off knowing today has not been his day - Stephen Ireland replaces him.
There is no respite for Stoke at the moment as their opponents continue to pour forward in numbers. Charlie Adam gives away a needless free-kick, and when it is cleared Juan Mata has a free shot at goal from the edge of the box. Asmir Begovic holds the Spaniard's effort easily though.
As if the scoreboard wasn't daunting enough, there is another worrying sight for Potters fans here as Charlie Adam is limping heavily following a clash in the middle of the park with Ramires before the goal. He is one of the hosts' most creative players, and they will need him more than ever today - one to keep an eye on.
I told you he'd been heavily involved didn't I? Andre Schurrle receives the ball in the middle of the Stoke half from John Obi Mikel and drives forward with purpose, turning Shawcross and Whelan inside out before firing a left-footed shot past Asmir Begovic and into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
Andre Schurrle gives Chelsea the lead with a wonderful finish!
Unsurprisingly whenever Stoke get a chance they are looking for the head of Peter Crouch to supply a flick-on on the edge of the box, but John Terry has been dealing with his considerable presence in the air thus far. The visitors have definitely settled down the quicker of the two sides though.
Andre Schurrle is heavily involved in these opening minutes, and Chelsea's summer signing breaks clear down the right again and finds Ramires with his low cross, but the midfielder lashes at it and the ball sails yards over the bar. It has been a slow start from the hosts here, and Chelsea are looking to take advantage.
A lovely pass down the right-hand side from Gary Cahill sees Andre Schurrle running into space in a dangerous position, but when he pulls it back for Fernando Torres the Spainard miscontrols it and Ryan Shawcross can clear - Stoke easily defend the corner.
After a minute's applause in tribute to Nelson Mandela, Stoke get us under way at the Britannia Stadium.
Stoke: Begovic, Cameron, Shawcross, Huth, Muniesa, Whelan, Nzonzi, Walters, Adam, Arnautovic, Crouch. Subs: Sorensen, Wilkinson, Pennant, Palacios, Ireland, Assaidi, Jones. Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Ramires, Obi Mikel, Hazard, Mata, Schurrle, Torres. Subs: Schwarzer, Cole, Essien, Lampard, De Bruyne, Ba, Eto'o/
Robert Huth is the only absentee for the hosts as he continues to recover from a knee injury he picked up earlier in the campaign. With Mark Hughes not having any fresh injury concerns, it looks as though the Welshman might stick with the same starting line-up that he used against Stoke in midweek. The Blues will be hoping to have Samuel Eto'o and Oscar back after both were dropped for the game against Sunderland on Wednesday after complaining about slight knocks. Meanwhile David Luiz and Marco van Ginkel are long-term absentees for the visitors with knee and cruciate ligament problems respectively.
Jonathan Moss will be the man in charge for this match as the 43-year-old referees his eighth game in the campaign thus far. He has an average of 3.7 cards per match, as he has brandished 25 bookings and has sent off one player in the 2013-2014 season. The man from Sunderland has already officiated a Stoke game this year, giving out one yellow card, and one Chelsea game, dealing out three bookings in that particular match. His assistants this afternoon will be John Brooks and John Flynn.
Unlike their title challengers Man City, Chelsea appear to be having very few problems on the road so far this season. For the second time in this campaign they have reeled off three successive victories away from Stamford Bridge, scoring ten goals in those three games. However, the blot on their copybook looks to be their struggles to keep a clean sheet, as they have conceded in eight of their last nine domestic clashes. Despite Jose Mourinho claiming that his side were defensively solid in their last game at the Stadium of Light, they still conceded three goals against Sunderland, eventually prevailing 4-3. There is no doubting that Chelsea fans would take that score-line come the end of play.
They may not be in the best of form, but the Potters have one thing to call on ahead of this clash – their form on their own turf has once more been very impressive this season, as they have the second best home record in the division so far in the campaign. They have conceded just three goals in seven matches at the Britannia Stadium, with only Man City conceding less. However, that could all change this afternoon, as Mark Hughes' side face their bogey team. They have failed to score in any of their last four games against Chelsea, and have found the net just once in their last eight meetings with Jose Mourinho's men. The Potters have failed to get the better of the Blues since being promoted to the Premier League, and with a recent record of just one win their last eleven league fixtures, you won't find many backing Stoke to upset the odds today.
Both of these teams are built upon a base of resolute defending and giving nothing away, so while you might be predicting that there will be little goalmouth action for the large majority of this one, the omens suggest otherwise. Stoke scored after just 13 seconds on this very ground just a few weeks back through goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, while Chelsea went behind to Southampton after 14 seconds six days ago. A team that has recently scored within the first 15 seconds playing against a team that has recently conceded within the first 15 seconds - to summarise, you probably don't want to turn up late for this match, just in case. Join us at 15:00 for live text commentary of a game that could have implications for the top and bottom of the Barclays Premier League table.
