Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
It was the Luis Suarez show at White Hart Lane this afternoon. Two goals, two assists and a role in the other goal saw him help his side to a 5-0 demolition of Spurs and make Andre Villas-Boas sweat. They started off well and after only 18 minutes were ahead thanks to a superb individual goal from the Uruguayan. Philippe Coutinho then hit the bar with a dipping effort. After 40 minutes it was 2-0 - Jordan Henderson sent a volley from inside the area into the bottom corner. Roberto Soldado thought he'd hit back for Spurs but his effort was ruled out by referee Jon Moss. Into the second half and it just got worse for Spurs. They nearly went three down on 49 minutes as Mamadou Sakho struck the bar before Paulinho was sent off on 64 minutes for a high challenge on Suarez. Jon Flanagan then made it three with his first goal for the club. Nine minutes later Suarez scored another fine goal as he sent a cheeky chip over the head of Lloris. He wasn't done there though. With added time looming, he played through 19-year-old Raheem Sterling who made no mistake when one-on-one. Full time and it's Spurs 0-5 Liverpool.
The referee blows his whistle and the game is over. Liverpool have absolutely thrashed Spurs.
Three minutes are to be added on. Could Liverpool get another?
Suarez is now the provider as they make it 5-0. He slides through a lovely ball to RAHEEM STERLING who nets his second goal of the season, slotting past Lloris with ease. AVB will be getting hot under the collar.
If Luis Suarez was a Premier League club, he would be tenth in the 'goals for' table. That is sensational. If Gareth Bale was worth £85 million, I'd dread to see what price tag is attached to Suarez.
LUIS SUAREZ makes it four! That's 17 goals in 11 games this season. A truly amazing record. He ran down on goal before sending an exquisite chip over the head of Lloris. He is simply unplayable sometimes.
Brendan Rodgers will be welcoming this away victory. They'd gone four without a win before today, and this is a perfect response to the game against Hull.
78' SUB
Lucas Leiva's game is up as he is replaced by youngster Luis Alberto, who has been on the bench for the last five games.
What a goal from JON FLANAGAN! Jordan Henderson backheels the ball through to Luis Suarez who chips the ball across to Flanagan. The youngster smashes the ball in off the crossbar. That's his first goal for the club, and what a goal it was. Game over.
72' WIDE
Philippe Coutinho receives the ball from Luis Suarez on the edge of the box. He sets himself up and tries to curl it into the corner, but gets it wrong and it goes into the crowd.
Despite being a man down, Spurs are still trying to get back into this and are spending most of the game camped in Liverpool's half. Aaron Lennon and Nacer Chadli's pace is proving difficult to deal with for the full backs.
If Spurs had a job on getting back into this game before, they do now. Paulinho is given a straight red card for a high challenge on Luis Suarez. He went in high and shoved his studs into the Uruguayan's chest. No need for it.
Andros Townsend is the third and final player coming on for Spurs. He replaces Moussa Dembele.
This is much better from Spurs now. They're attacking relentlessly and are putting immense amounts of pressure on the Liverpool goal. Aaron Lennon and Moussa Dembele try their luck but can't find a way past Mignolet.
Aaron Lennon gets into the box but overruns and sees the ball go out for a goal kick. There were plenty of bodies in the middle awaiting a good delivery.
Liverpool counter after Ezekiel Fryers' pass goes to a man in red. The ball is played through to Philippe Coutinho who plays it to Luis Suarez. He goes to lay it off to Jordan Henderson but doesn't put enough power on it and the visitors lose the ball.
The centre backs are trying to get in on the action now. The ball is played over to the back post by Raheem Sterling and Mamadou Sakho heads onto the bar from only a yard out. The ball comes back to Martin Skrtel but if sends a volley wide. That would have been a decent birthday present.
Lewis Holtby plays Roberto Soldado into the box and the Spanish forward powers the ball over the crossbar. It was a very tight angle in all fairness.
The second half is underway here in North London and Ezekiel Fryers has come on for his league debut in place of Kyle Naughton. An odd change to make at 2-0 down but he has impressed in the Europa League.
Liverpool went into the break two goals to the good after Luis Suarez's sublime solo goal and Jordan Henderson's strong volley. Liverpool were dominating the game from the off and had it not been for Kyle Naughton, would have had a goal early on. They did score on 19 minutes - Suarez picked the ball up, evaded two challenges and curled past a helpless Hugo Lloris. Spurs got into the game after this but couldn't create any real chances. As their momentum was building, Liverpool got a second. Lloris pulled off two excellent saves but when the ball fell to Hendeson, there was no stopping him. Roberto Soldado thought he'd pulled a goal back but Jon Moss disallowed it for a foul on Simon Mignolet.
Half time here and it's 2-0 to the visitors.
Simon Mignolet takes a heavy touch and Roberto Soldado chases him down and shrugs him off before slotting into and empty net. The ref chalks it off though as he deemed Soldado's challenge unfair. It was a tough decision.
Liverpool double their lead! It's JORDAN HENDERSON who lashes a volley into the bottom corner. He was played through after a neat touch from Philippe Coutinho. His initial shot was well saved by Lloris, as was Suarez's follow-up, but no one could stop Henderson's second effort and it's 2-0.
Nacer Chadli is again at the centre of a move. He cuts inside and his cross-cum-shot is flicked towards goal by Roberto Soldado. There isn't much power on it and Simon Mignolet saves easily.
Nacer Chadli has done well for Spurs. He's showing a lot of promise. He just needs to work on his final ball into the box, because so far most of his crosses have been hit too hard.
Spurs have got off lightly there! Hugo Lloris comes out to head the ball clear but only succeeds in flicking it on for Suarez. There are two defenders on the line but Lloris gets back to stop after the Uruguayan hesitated. If he'd looked up he would've seen Coutinho in plenty of space.
It's an early enforced change for Spurs. Sandro makes his way off the pitch and one comes German international Lewis Holtby.
Liverpool come close to doubling their lead. Suarez is played through and picks out Philippe Coutinho at the edge of the area. He hits a volley into the ground and it bounces onto the bar. Etienne Capoue heads away to Glen Johnson, and his effort is blazed just over.
Spurs have been a lot more positive since the goal. Nacer Chadli has the ball on the left wing and sends it into Roberto Soldado, whose header goes over the bar. Mamadou Sakho just did enough to prevent him from having a clear sight of goal.
Luis Suarez is played through well but Hugo Lloris is quick off his line to make himself big as Suarez shoots. He could've gone round him but the angle may have been too tight then.
Nacer Chadli does well to get past Glen Johnson down the left. He turns one way then the other before playing over a ball to Aaron Lennon at the far post. He tries the acrobatic attempt but can't reach it.
It's 1-0 to Liverpool and you guessed it. That man LUIS SUAREZ with his 16th goal of the season. He picks the ball up on the edge of the area and evades the sliding challenge of Kyle Walker before getting a shot off before Sandro slides in. It bends past Lloris and into the bottom corner. Sublime play from a sublime striker.
Raheem Sterling does well to get past Kyle Walker and slide a ball across goal. Kyle Naughton makes a vital clearance for a corner. Had he not been there, Mamadou Sakho would have had a tap in.
Liverpool attack with real intent - Suarez gets the ball on the edge of the box. His ankle is clipped but he tries to stay up and gets a shot away. It's deflected out for a corner but Sandro is lucky he wasn't penalised there.
It's drilled in low but no one can turn it towards goal. It comes out to the edge of the box and is hooked back in. Hugo Lloris comes out and punches it to Roberto Soldado, who then hoofs away.
Raheem Sterling is brought down after a challenge by Kyle Naughton. Philippe Coutinho will take it and try to curl it in with pace.
Paulinho wants a penalty but Jon Moss doesn't award one. At the far post Jon Flanagan had hold of his shirt but the Brazilian only went down once he realised he wouldn't be able to control the ball.
The ball is played through two Liverpool players and into Lennon again, he can't keep hold of the ball but it comes to Paulinho who hits the shot from the edge of the box. Unfortunately it flies way over the crossbar.
The ball deflects off a few players on the edge of the box and it comes to Aaron Lennon. He dawdles on the ball and loses out. Jordan Henderson clears with ease.
Philippe Coutinho is taken by surprise as Luis Suarez finds him with a sliced shot. He didn't expect it, and his shot from inside the area trickles into the hands of Hugo Lloris.
The game is up and running here in London and the fans are in full voice.
Just the one enforced change for Liverpool. Captain Steven Gerrard is out with a hamstring injury, so Lucas Leiva will deputise in his place. Full line-up: Mignolet; Flanagan, Skrtel, Sakho, Johnson; Allen, Lucas; Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling; Suarez. Subs: Jones, Kelly, Agger, Toure, Moses, Aspas, Luis Alberto.
Andre Villas-Boas makes seven changes from the side that beat Anzhi on Thursday. Notably though, Roberto Soldado starts today, despite speculation he would be dropped. Full line-up: Lloris; Walker, Capoue, Dawson, Naughton; Paulinho, Sandro; Lennon, Dembele, Chadli, Soldado. Subs: Friedel, Fryers, Holtby, Lamela, Townsend, Sigurdsson, Defoe.

AVB's Spurs welcome Liverpool to White Hart Lane this afternoon as they look to go level on points with their compatriots from the red half of Merseyside. However, if the visitors can snatch an unlikely victory, then they'll rise from fifth to second, only two points behind league leaders Arsenal. Both sides have picked up six points from their last two games, but Spurs were away while Liverpool's games were at home.
Most teams often pick up the majority of their points on their own turf, but Spurs have recorded five points more on their travels this season – 16 in total. But in Liverpool they do welcome a side who are equally as poor on the road as Spurs are at home – only two wins away all season. Their last win at the Lane came at the back end of October when only a late Roberto Soldado penalty could tame the Tigers from Hull. After his midweek hat-trick here against Anzhi, he'll be confident of replicating the form of one of today's visitors, Luis Suarez.
For me, there is no doubt in my mind that Luis Suarez has been the stand-out player of the season - taking the limelight away from Aaron Ramsey - despite having missed the first five game of the campaign for his bite on Branislav Ivanovic. The Uruguayan is on fire right now, and from his last 29 league games has found the back of the net 29 times – not to mention 15 goals in ten appearances this season. As well as scoring some sensational goals, he's also been the architect of many chances for his side this season.
Spurs' key man this season, for me, has been Andros Townsend. Having watched him put in a series of good performances for QPR last season, the youngster has continued that form into this campaign, which rightfully earned him a call-up to the England side, where again he impressed. It goes without saying who Liverpool's key player has been this season. Though it looked like being Daniel Sturridge, Suarez has come from nowhere to steal the attention, and without his goals, Liverpool could be a fair way down the table.
Picking up three points against Liverpool at home has become a bit of a theme for the North London side. From the last five games, they've managed to pick up all 15 points on offer, a run stretching back five years. The last time they dropped points against them here was in April 2008. However, they've got a lot more to deal with this season, after the fairly strong start by the visitors.
Jonathan Moss is in charge of this afternoon's game. A Premier League ref of two years, he has overseen 14 games so far this term and has been in three games involving today's two teams – Liverpool's 4-1 league defeat of West Brom, Spurs' 2-2 draw with Hull and their 4-0 win over Aston Villa, both in the cup. He has handed out 45 yellow cards this season as well as sent one player off.
