Aston Villa vs. Crystal Palace
Minute Commentary
Crystal Palace dragged Aston Villa into the relegation dogfight after a late winner gave them a 1-0 victory at Villa Park. Dwight Gayle's outstanding solo strike in the last minute of added on time was enough to separate the sides in what was a largely turgid affair. After a tedious first half, the game burst into life early in the second period, with Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor both having chances to open the scoring for Villa. But it was Palace who had the better openings, with Jason Puncheon denied on two occasions by the brilliance of Brad Guzan before the American keeper tipped a Barry Bannan effort onto the post. And just when it seemed that both sides would have to settle for a draw, Gayle picked up the ball inside the Villa half before cutting inside and bending an outrageous effort into the top right-hand corner of the goal. Palace are out of the bottom three but anxious Villa could be in big trouble.
And that's full-time. Crystal Palace come away with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa as the boos ring out at Villa Park.
What a goal! Palace have nicked it at the death! Dean Moxey wins the ball inside his own half before easing the ball down the touchline for Dwight Gayle. He runs at the last man Fabian Delph before cutting inside from 20 yards out and bending an unstoppable strike past Brad Guzan. Wow!
It's in! Dwight Gayle scores!
We're into three minutes stoppage time at Villa Park. If there's going to be a winner, it has to come soon.
What a chance! Matthew Lowton crosses in for Jordan Bowery, whose header forces Julian Speroni to tip over the top. Fine save.
A number of Aston Villa fans are already filing out of the stadium, even with the score at 0-0. It's true that their side's performance hasn't been up to scratch today and they evidently don't hold out much hope for a late winner.
Tony Pulis feels it's time to make another substitution, with Dean Moxey coming on for Barry Bannan. That will give Palace extra protection down the left, and could hint that Pulis will be happy with a point. Villa also make a switch, with Andreas Weimann going off for Aleksandar Tonev.
What an effort by Joel Ward! Adrian Mariappa passes the ball to Ward on the edge of the penalty area and the midfielder tries a whipped effort first time with his right foot. The ball dips just over Brad Guzan but, luckily for Villa, just over the crossbar too.
The home fans inside Villa Park are voicing their frustration at Paul Lambert's men after Nathan Baker punts an aimless ball straight into the arms of Julian Speroni. Delivery has to be better than that - particularly as target man Libor Kozak is now off the pitch.
The quality that we saw glimpses of in the first 15 minutes of the second half has somewhat disappeared as the half has worn on. Both teams are now more direct, though you feel Palace would settle for a point.
Aston Villa make their second substitution of the afternoon, with Jordan Bowery replacing Libor Kozak up front.
This match could still go either way. Aston Villa are still dominating possession but Crystal Palace arguably look the more dangerous, particularly through Yannick Bolasie down the right. Leandro Bacuna wipes him out, giving Palace a free-kick in dangerous territory, but it's wasted.
Karim El Ahmadi is the latest player to go into the book as he takes down Jonathan Williams. Meanwhile, Tony Pulis makes a change, introducing Dwight Gayle in place of Cameron Jerome, who has had a difficult afternoon as Palace's loan striker.
Libor Kozak comes away with the ball after Danny Gabbidon misjudges a bouncing ball inside the final third. He pulls the ball back, meaning to pick out Fabian Delph, but the pass is behind the midfielder and the move breaks down. Shades of the first half debacle there.
The increase in quality in the second half compared to the first is remarkable, with both teams now looking dangerous. Aston Villa make a change, introducing Leandro Bacuna in place of Antonio Luna, who has struggled against Yannick Bolasie today. Meanwhile, Cameron Jerome is booked for not retreating at a free-kick.
Another great save by Brad Guzan! Yannick Bolasie gets to the byline again before pulling the ball back. Jason Puncheon runs in on it and takes a touch before driving at the near post, but Guzan blocks well. Just after, Jonathan Williams comes on to replace Puncheon.
It's another miss from Andreas Weimann! A wonderful, flowing team move ends when Mark Albrighton pulls the ball back for Weimann just inside the penalty area, but the Austrian gets under it and the shot goes miles over again.
What pace from Gabriel Agbonlahor! He picks up the ball in the centre circle, before running directly at the Crystal Palace defence. He goes a little wide, though, making his eventual shot from a tougher angle. In the end, the strike is weak and straight at Julian Speroni.
What a save! Barry Bannan strikes from 20 yards but Brad Guzan gets a vital hand to the ball to push it onto the post, before his defence clears. At the other end, Ciaran Clark heads over from a corner kick. This game is suddenly end-to-end!
That early Palace pressure has given Aston Villa the kick up the backside they needed. Andreas Weimann has a golden opportunity when Fabian Delph's diagonal ball picks him out inside the penalty area. The Austrian tries a volley but fluffs his lines.
Palace are really on top now. Barry Bannan whips an inswinging corner kick to the near post, where Damien Delaney can attack it. His powerful header goes high and wide at the near post, though.
That's the closest we've come to an opener! Antonio Luna makes a mistake on the left side of the Villa defence, allowing Yannick Bolasie to drive into the box. He cuts the ball back for Jason Puncheon, who stumbles before toe poking at goal. Brad Guzan has to parry the ball away for Villa.
Palace start the second half with intent as Barry Bannan clips a left-footed cross to the far post. Matthew Lowton rises above Cameron Jerome to head away, though.
Both teams are out on the pitch and we're back underway at Villa Park. Neither side have chosen to make a change over half-time, so the teams remain as they were at kick-off. Will there be more quality on show in the second half or is this game heading for a dull stalemate?
Aston Villa and Crystal Palace remain goalless at the interval after a truly terrible first half at Villa Park. Both teams have played as if they had too much Christmas turkey yesterday, with the tempo slow and quality extremely low. There have been only two shots on target - both weak attempts from Palace's Jason Puncheon - while the closest we've come to an opener came in an incident right at the end of the half. A Villa corner kick went to the far post where Palace defender Adrian Mariappa narrowly avoided heading the ball into his own net - which would have been an appropriately sloppy opener. Both Paul Lambert and Tony Pulis will be hoping for hugely improved performances from their languid sides in the second period.
Karim El Ahmadi tries a volley from the edge of the area but Mile Jedinak deflects it for a corner. The resulting set piece nearly ends up in the back of the net as Adrian Mariappa heads over his own bar. And that's half-time at Villa Park. We're goalless at the break.
Well, that sums up the half. Aston Villa keep the ball for a long time inside the Crystal Palace half before Fabian Delph eventually tries an ambitious half-volley from 35 yards out. The ball balloons high into the Villa Park stand.
That's so, so poor. Crystal Palace counter attack through Barry Bannan, with the Scot laying the ball off to Cameron Jerome on the right wing. He tries to outpace Antonio Luna but his touch is so bad and Luna can allow the ball to roll out for a goal kick. The quality just hasn't been there from either side.
Jason Puncheon squirms his way between Aston Villa defenders before the ball rebounds to Yannick Bolasie, whose vicious drive goes wide. Just after, Barry Bannan is booked for kicking the ball away in disgust. It's been a really bitty first half.
Nathan Baker becomes the first man to go into the book and he can't complain after a rash tackle on Cameron Jerome near the corner kick. The Palace striker takes offence to the tackle and squares up to the defender, but Howard Webb defuses the situation. That was awful from Baker.
That sums up this first half. Crystal Palace have a huge overload on the left side of the Aston Villa penalty area but Mile Jedinak's pass is poor and forces Yannick Bolasie too wide. The quality has been poor so far.
Aston Villa's Libor Kozak is down on the turf after being on the end of a stray arm from Mile Jedinak. It wasn't a deliberate elbow from the Palace man but that doesn't make it any less painful for the striker. He will continue, though.
Yannick Bolasie has been Crystal Palace's biggest threat so far. He embarks on a powerful run infield from his right-wing berth and threads a pass into Cameron Jerome on the edge of the area. The striker tries to pick out Barry Bannan with a deft through-ball but it's not precise enough and the chance goes.
Aston Villa are looking far more incisive when they go direct, with target man Libor Kozak proving to be a useful outlet. He helps on a drilled pass from Antonio Luna but Gabriel Agbonlahor can't quite stop the ball from rolling out off Damien Delaney for a corner kick. The resulting set piece comes to nothing.
That's better from Aston Villa. Karim El-Ahmadi gets in down the right side of the pitch and crosses for Gabriel Agbonlahor at the back post. He nods the ball back towards the edge of the penalty area but Barry Bannan gets his toe on it before Marc Albrighton can attempt a first-time shot.
That was a let-off for Danny Gabbidon. The Palace defender is the last man as he tries to sweep up just inside his own half, but he slips as Libor Kozak and Gabriel Agbonlahor bear down on him. Luckily for him, the ball ricochets away from the Villa attackers as Damien Delaney gets back.
Crystal Palace have the first real attempt of the game as Aston Villa relinquish possession too easily in the middle of the pitch. Jason Puncheon finds himself in acres of room 25 yards out but he pulls his left-footed strike miles wide of goal.
Fans who have flocked to Villa Park hoping for a Christmas cracker this afternoon will be disappointed with what's been offered up by Aston Villa and Crystal Palace so far. The tempo has been low, particularly from the hosts, allowing Palace to sit in formation and soak up pressure easily.
Howard Webb has been very lenient early on, choosing not to hand out cards when it could have been easily justified. First, Jonathan Parr blocks off Mark Albrighton before Karim El Ahmadi chops down Parr on the halfway line. Both escaped with quiet warnings.
Chances have been at a premium in the opening 12 minutes, with both defences well on top. It looks unlikely that we're going to see too many goals at Villa Park this afternoon.
Aston Villa have been frustrated in their efforts to break Crystal Palace down early on, with the visitors' defence staying strong in the final third. Karim El-Ahmadi eventually finds some space 20 yards out and is urged to shoot by the Villa Park crowd, but he rejects the opportunity, much to their irritation.
Crystal Palace's plan seems to be to sit deep before breaking forward on the counter attack. Jason Puncheon steams forward for the visitors and his cross finds Yannick Bolasie's head but Brad Guzan clings on to his effort easily.
Aston Villa have controlled possession in the opening stages but none of it in a threatening area of the pitch from the Crystal Palace point of view. An eventual long ball gets Villa into the final third and Damien Delaney heads behind for the first corner of the game. Mark Albrighton takes it but the visitors scramble the ball clear.
Referee Howard Webb blows his whistle to signal the start of the match. Aston Villa are in their traditional claret and blue colours while Crystal Palace wear their black change kit. Will either of these teams be able to secure a much-needed win to end their own worrying losing streaks?
Stay tuned for live text updates from today's Premier League encounter. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date with the goings-on at Villa Park, which get underway at 3pm.
Referee Howard Webb is the man in the middle this afternoon. The 42-year-old takes charge of his 14th Premier League fixture of the campaign - the most of any other top flight official this season. He has handed out 33 yellow cards in that time but is yet to issue a dismissal, Webb will be assisted by Simon Beck and Peter Kirkup.
Crystal Palace midfielder Barry Bannan featured over 50 times for Aston Villa before making the switch to Selhurst Park this summer. The Scotland international came through the academy at Villa Park and made his first team debut in November 2008.
Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis said: "It's near on 11 players that we can't call. It's a big miss for us but saying that, the players that have performed and played in the games have done exceptionally well. We'll go there and make sure that we prepare properly and hopefully get a result... We have got two very difficult away games - from Villa, we go to Man City two days later. It's a massive call for a club of our stature at the moment to do that but that's what being in the Premier League is all about."
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert said: "You have to try and put a stop to [the slump] as quick as you can. You look at that mid-table, there is absolutely nothing in it. One win catapults. Palace's form has improved but that's what happens sometimes when a new manager comes in, you get that initial lift and then things like that can happen. Tony knows that, he has made Stoke City the club it is today."
Aston Villa may be having a tough time at home this season, but Crystal Palace don't tend to enjoy trips to Villa Park. The two sides last met in the FA Cup in February 2010 when two John Carew penalties helped the hosts to a 3-1 win. Palace haven't got the better of Villa on their own patch since September 1991 with a 1-0 victory going down as their only one on Villains turf in the past 45 years.
Tony Pulis is missing one of his main frontmen too, with Marouane Chamakh having to watch today's game from the sidelines having picked up his fifth booking of the season against Newcastle at the weekend. His suspension comes as Palace's squad continues to be squeezed by injuries, with Jerome Thomas, Adlene Guedioura, Glenn Murray, Paddy McCarthy and Jack Hunt all unavailable for selection. However, midfield duo Stuart O'Keefe and Kagisho Dikgacoi might return to the starting XI if they pass late fitness tests ahead of the trip to the Midlands.
Aston Villa will have to do without striker Christian Benteke for the entire festive period as the Belgian is sidelined with a knee injury. But Paul Lambert's forward line will be strengthened by the return of Gabriel Agbonlahor, who is back from suspension and will likely be thrown straight back into the starting XI. Midfielder Ashley Westwood is suspended, though, and captain Ron Vlaar is still struggling with a calf problem which makes him unlikely to feature. Jores Okore, Joe Bennett and Charles N'Zogbia are also still on the treatment table.
Both sides will be looking to end losing streaks when Aston Villa host Crystal Palace at Villa Park on Boxing Day. Christmas dinner won't have tasted particularly pleasant for either Paul Lambert or Tony Pulis, with Villa having lost their last three games and Palace still lurking in the relegation zone after being hammered at home to Newcastle last week. There's hope for both teams, though; the hosts could move into the top half with a rare home victory, while the same result for Palace could lift them out of the drop zone. Either boost would prove the perfect pick-me-up going into the new year.
