Minute Commentary
90' HEALTH HAZARD FOR SICKLY SWANS
Eden Hazard's 29th-minute strike was enough to secure Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Swansea at Stamford Bridge, the visitors failing to register a single shot on target. The Swans started the first half reasonably and went close twice through a dragged effort from Jonjo Shelvey and Alvaro Vazquez, who should have scored from close range but instead shot straight at the keeper. For Chelsea, Samuel Eto'o wasted several opportunities, not least a point-blank second half effort that left Jose Mourinho slack-jawed in disbelief. It was left to the excellent Hazard to make the difference, the Belgian seizing the ball on the left and beating three men with a dribble infield before hammering in a shot from the edge of the area. Gerhard Tremmel might still have saved it, but the unfortunate keeper was unsighted by Ashley Williams. Yet again the Blues fail to kill an opponent, but this time they got away with it. The visitors had very little to offer and should be worried.
90' FULL TIME CHELSEA 1 SWANSEA CITY 0
It's all over here at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea have secured a 1-0 victory.
90' LAST CHANCE
Taylor plays Shelvey in behind Ivanovic, and Mikel concedes a corner. The same player gets the set-piece away, but only as far as Britton, whose half-volley is blocked. That must be it now.
90' POOR SHOWING
Curiously, Swansea don't even look like they want to get the ball up the pitch at this late stage. They really have been poor today.
88' NOWHERE NEAR
The visitors threaten for the first time in a long while as Angel Rangel's cross from the left wing is met with a backwards header from Wilfried Bony. The effort lacks conviction and drifts comfortably wide.
86' YELLOW CARD
The second booking of the game goes to Ramires for a foul on Leon Britton, meaning the Brazil midfielder will be suspended for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday.
85' YELLOW CARD
Amat picks up the belated first booking of the game for a late tackle.
82' SUBSTITUTION
Willian gets a late run-out in place of the excellent Eden Hazard.
82' NO PENALTY
Ramires covers a lot of ground in a lung-bursting run forward, and appears to be felled by Taylor as he enters the penalty area, but the referee says no dice.
79' TAYLOR ON THE OVERLAP
Vazquez plays a neat ball in behind Ivanovic for the overlapping Taylor, who forces a corner with his attempted cross. Yet again the Swans fail to make any impression with the set-piece.
76' SUBSTITUTION
Wilfried Bony replaces Routledge.
75' FLICKS AND TRICKS
Lampard lines up a free kick on the right and bends in a superb cross, It's slightly behind Branislav Ivanovic, who clears the bar with an innovative heel flick.
73' GREAT SAVE
Ramires turns back on the 18-yard line and passes the ball to Frank Lampard, who goes for the bottom corner with a sidefooted effort that draws a full-length diving save from Gerhard Tremmel.
72' SUBSTITUTION
The Chelsea supporters are being very appreciative today; they clap Mata loudly as he makes way for Andre Schurrle.
70' SWANS ON THE BREAK
Swansea break at speed in a rare foray forward after Cole loses out to De Guzman. The ball is passed to Routledge, who outpaces Ramires but can't beat the well-positioned Luiz with his cross.
67' SUBSTITUTION
Oscar has faded somewhat in the second half, but he still receives a thunderous round of applause as Frank Lampard comes on to take his place.
65' ROUTLEDGE SHOWS DRIVE
Routledge drives forward, holding off Ramires as he does so, and earns a corner as his shot flicks off the Brazilian to spin wide. The set-piece comes to nothing as Ashley Williams is penalised for shoving.
63' LUIZ TAKES A DIVE
We're treated to the strange sight of David Luiz diving under Amat's long ball after hearing a late shout from Cech. Not something you'd tend to see from most centre backs.
61' SUBSTITUTION
Jose Canas hasn't had the best of games, but he still applauds the fans as he leaves the pitch in favour of Jonathan de Guzman.
59' IVANOVIC DENIED
Mata floats over a corner from the left, and the unmarked David Luiz nods it towards goal from the edge of the box. Ivanovic goes to poke it home, only to see the ball stolen off his toe by Williams.
56' TOO MUCH ON IT
Mata points to where he wants the ball as Hazard stands with it over by the left touchline. The Belgian spots his teammate's intention, but the pass is hit too strongly and runs out for a goal kick.
53' TERRY'S ERROR
An uncharacteristically poor clearance from Terry is directed straight to Wayne Routledge, but the Swansea winger's first touch is heavy and allows John Obi Mikel to relieve him of the ball.
50' ETO'O MISSES AGAIN
This is getting silly now. Hazard sets up Samuel Eto'o with a square pass, and the Cameroonian fails to hit the target with a low shot from 18 yards.
49' JOSE NONPLUSSED
Jose Mourinho is still scratching his head on the sidelines, wondering just how Eto'o didn't put that last chance away. There's a look of deep exasperation on the manager's face.
46' HOW MANY CHANCES?
Chelsea spurn the chance to go two-up within seconds of the restart. Juan Mata races after Luiz's long ball and swipes it across the box, where Eto'o, running onto the cross, volleys straight at Tremmel with the goal at his mercy.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Michael Laudrup has made a change at half time, replacing the anonymous Alex Pozuelo with Pablo Hernandez.
45' HAZARD HAS IT AT HALF TIME
A superb and slightly fortunate strike from Eden Hazard is the difference between these sides so far, although Chelsea have dominated and should be further in front. The Belgian cut inside from the left in the 29th minute to hammer a shot into the net from the edge of the box; Gerhard Tremmel might have saved it, but was unsighted by Ashley Williams. Apart from that, the Blues spurned golden chances through Samuel Eto'o and Juan Mata, while a John Terry header was tipped just over. Swansea have been quiet but did carve out one brilliant chance when Alvaro Vazquez should have scored from close range, only to shoot straight at Petr Cech. Once again the hosts have failed to kill their opponents, who remain very much in this game. Everything could still change in the second half.
45' HALF TIME CHELSEA 1 SWANSEA CITY 0
It's half time here at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are a goal to the good.
45' BLOCKED OFF
Hazard looks for Eto'o with a chip over Amat, the striker controlling the ball and moving back inside with a stepover. In the end the visitors get men back and the shot is blocked.
42' GOOD SAVE
Mata sends Eto'o racing through with an intelligent flicked pass over the defence, and the former Barcelona striker disappoints again with a poke straight at the keeper when it looked easier to score.
39' MATA GOES FOR GOAL
Another crunching tackle from Oscar wins the ball back for Chelsea, allowing Ramires to set up Mata on the edge of the box. The Spain midfielder shoots low and mere inches wide of the right stick.
38' LONG-RANGER
Luiz races out of defence to make a rash, late challenge on Jonjo Shelvey, who crashes to the turf. The midfielder lines the free kick up himself from all of 40 yards and somehow decides to go for goal. To nobody's surprise, the drive rises up and over the bar.
35' MAGIC PAIR
A brilliant move between the two magicians Oscar and Hazard allows the latter a sight of goal, but the finish doesn't match up and Tremmel gathers with ease.
33' WHAT A CHANCE
Neil Taylor gets forward to cross from the left, and Shelvey meets it with a header that flies across the face of goal. It drops to Alvaro Vazquez, who should score from close range but instead sees his shot tipped over by Petr Cech. The Spaniard has still never scored for the Swans.
31' TREMMEL GETS LUCKY
Tremmel's blushes are spared as the keeper's clearance cannons off Eto'o and almost to Oscar, but just about within the fortunate German's reach. He falls on the ball in relief.
29' GOAL!!! CHELSEA
The hosts take the lead with a super goal from EDEN HAZARD. The Belgian receives a pass from Ashley Cole and cuts inside from the left flank, speeding past three defenders to hammer in a shot from 18 yards. Ashley Williams tries to block it but succeeds only in impeding the view of Gerhard Tremmel, who might have kept it out had it not been for his captain.
27' LULL IN PLAY
The game has hit something of a lull over the last few minutes, with neither side looking as adventurous as in the frantic early stages. Both appear content to sit back and size their opponents up for the moment.
24' WIDE FROM LUIZ
Juan Mata goes down rather too easily under Amat's challenge by the left touchline, winning a free kick for his team. The Spaniard takes the set-piece himself, sending it spinning into the box where David Luiz glances a header wide of the target.
20' TRACKING BACK
Oscar surprises Rangel with a superb sliding tackle as the Swansea man goes to carry the ball up the pitch. He then shows quick thinking to pick out John Terry with a pinpoint cross, the former England captain forcing Gerhard Tremmel to tip his looping header over the bar.
17' CHANCES GALORE
The game certainly isn't short of opportunities. This time Samuel Eto'o holds off Ashley Williams and plays the ball around the corner for Ramires, who takes it in his stride but fails to trouble the keeper with an under-powered effort from the edge of the area.
15' END TO END STUFF
As Shelvey drives forward at pace, he shapes to pass out wide before dropping the shoulder to drag a low 25-yard effort wide of the left-hand post. The space really opened up for the former Liverpool man there. Moments later the Blues go up the other end as Eden Hazard plays a neat one-two with Eto'o to pierce the back line and shoot narrowly wide of the target.
12' CHELSEA THREATENING
Oscar dinks a ball beyond the defence for Eto'o, who backheels to the encroaching Branislav Ivanovic. The right back drives in a low shot that has to be knocked out for a corner by Williams.
10' OSCAR'S LOOSE TOUCH
Oscar squanders the best chance of the game so far, taking a loose touch as Eden Hazard squeezes a through ball past Ashley Williams. The Brazilian's slip-up allows Neil Taylor to get a toe in to clear.
8' AMAT HEADS OVER
Jonjo Shelvey swings the resulting free kick into the box from the left, finding the head of Amat, whose looped effort clears the crossbar by some distance.
7' DOUBLE NUTMEG
Swansea show they're no slouches with their own spell of possession, culminating in a cheeky piece of play from Angel Rangel, who nutmegs first John Obi Mikel and then Ramires before drawing a foul.
4' CHELSEA STARTING STRONGLY
With just a few minutes on the clock, Chelsea are looking the more dangerous of the two teams. Samuel Eto'o gets one chance to turn on the edge of the box, but Amat stands up tall to relieve him of the ball.
1' KICK OFF
The referee blows the whistle to get this afternoon's slice of Boxing Day action underway here at Stamford Bridge.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
Jose Mourinho has rotated heavily today, replacing Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta with David Luiz and Ashley Cole at the back, while Oscar and Juan Mata come in for Frank Lampard and Willian, with Samuel Eto'o preferred to Fernando Torres up front. Michael Laudrup has also shaken things up; Ben Davies and Dwight Tiendalli make way for Neil Taylor and Angel Rangel at the back, while Jonathan de Guzman and Pablo Hernandez are replaced by Leon Britton and Alex Pozuelo. Alvaro Vazquez starts up top, with Wilfried Bony dropping to the bench.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Leon Britton has recovered from a broken toe, but apart from that the injuries are mounting; Michu, Nathan Dyer, Michel Vorm and Garry Monk are all out.
0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Ashley Cole looks in line for a rare start with Jose Mourinho poised to rotate his side, while Michael Essien is available again after suspension. Ryan Bertrand and Marco van Ginkel remain on the treatment table.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Gary Cahill had an excellent game against Arsenal, and the centre back will be looking to solidify his place at the back following a recent spell on the bench. That can only be good news for anyone concerned with England's World Cup hopes, but perhaps not such good news for Swansea.
0' MICHU MISSING IN ACTION
It's very bad news for Swansea; star player Michu has been ruled out for six weeks after undergoing ankle surgery. The Spain forward went for scans after missing the 2-1 loss to Everton which identified the need for an operation, and his absence means that, like today's opponents, Michael Laudrup will look to sign a striker of two in the January transfer window.
0' STRIKING CRISIS
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has unsurprisingly identified a need to secure more striking talent in the January transfer window. Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba have managed a pathetic five Barclays Premier League goals between them this campaign, so a fresh injection of forward threat is a clear must if Chelsea are to maintain their title challenge.
0' REF WATCH
Michael Jones is the man to take charge of this Boxing Day encounter, and he'll have his beady eye on the Chelsea players following Monday night's bad-tempered encounter with Arsenal. Both Ramires and John Obi Mikel put in nasty tackles that could have been red carded on another day, a fact that 'll be fresh in Mr Jones' mind, so the midfield pair may have to take care this time out.
0' CHELSEA V SWANSEA CITY
It's tight at the top of the Barclays Premier League, where Chelsea lurk two points behind leaders Liverpool and Arsenal and one behind Manchester City, the Blues sitting level with fifth-placed Everton. So, if results elsewhere go Jose Mourinho's way, this match could represent a golden opportunity to seize some initiative in what's turned into the most open title race for many years. Monday night's draw with the Gunners was a tactical triumph for Chelsea, who could have won it, and they'll be confident going into this Boxing Day fixture. Swansea's season has been one of ups and downs; Michael Laudrup's side can't find any consistency, although their current league standing of 11th is not to be sniffed at. If on form they'll still pose a challenge for any side. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 3pm for all the action from Stamford Bridge.
