Minute Commentary
90' TOTTENHAM 1 - 1 WEST BROM
First half goals by Christian Eriksen and Jonas Olsson saw the points shared between Tottenham and West Brom at White Hart Lane in this high-octane encounter. Spurs set up with an astonishingly attacking line-up, and predictably dominated the possession count in the first-half. However, with no defensive players anywhere to be seen in midfield, it left Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches horribly exposed every time West Brom struck on that break, and Matej Vydra could have had a hat-trick before the break were it not for a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Hugo Lloris. Tottenham tired after the interval to allow West Brom back into it, but despite both teams' intense efforts, a winner just wouldn't arrive at either end. Dropped points at home to West Brom is a very disappointing start to Tim Sherwood's tenure as Tottenham boss, particularly with his tactical choices very much a cause for concern, while West Brom will be happy with a point but disappointed not to have been more clinical with their finishing. At White Hart Lane it finished Tottenham Hotspur 1, West Bromwich Albion 1.
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes and a mixture of applause and boos ring around White Hart Lane.
90' POOR FINAL BALL
Vlad Chiriches sets away Danny Rose down the left, but his cross doesn't pick out any of the white shirts inside the box and is far too close to Ben Foster. That is likely to be the last of the action.
90' FOUR ADDED MINUTES
The fourth official reveals that there are four minutes left to play. The Spurs fans roar on their team in hope of a late goal. This would be a very disappointing result for Tottenham if the score stays the same.
88' TIME RUNNING OUT
Spurs are completely on top now, throwing everyone forward in search of a winner. There is still time for a chance, but will it come for Spurs... or for West Brom on the break?!
86' YELLOW CARD
Roberto Soldado goes into the referee's book for a rash challenge on Jonas Olsson inside the area. That tackle came just moments after furious penalty appeals from Soldado for a hand-ball that prevented his cross from reaching Gylfi Sigurdsson.
85' NEAT BUILD-UP
Erik Lamela is involved a number of times in a Spurs move, but his final one-two with Emmanuel Adebayor is snuffed out by a crowd of red-shirted defenders.
82' SOLDADO GOES CLOSE
Roberto Soldado gets a head to Christian Eriksen's under-hit corner, and very nearly makes something out of it with a flick that is inches away from picking out the far top corner.
79' CLEVER EFFORT BY SOLDADO
Roberto Soldado has not seen many chances today, and when he finally gets a chance the ball into him is behind his run. The Spaniard improvises with a back-heeled flick on the turn, but it doesn't hit the target.
77' INTO THE SIDE-NETTING
Erik Lamela drifts in from the right and floats a lovely cross towards the back post, only for Gylfi Sigurdsson's header to hit the side-netting. The ball-boy behind the goal rushes on to the pitch and places the ball for Ben Foster's goal-kick - a response the fan accusations of timewasting - which endears the youngster to the crowd, but not particularly to Foster!
76' WEST BROM CHANGE
Zoltan Gera has put in a huge shift today and is given a rest by Keith Downing, with Stephane Sessegnon coming on.
74' CHANGE FOR SPURS
Nacer Chadli does superbly to beat three defenders on a strong run into the area from the left, but Emmanuel Adebayor is slow to react and can't get on the end of Chadli's flicked lay-up. That would have been a golden chance if Adebayor had reacted. It is Chadli's last involvement, with Erik Lamela coming on in his place.
70' WEST BROM CHANGE
Youssouf Mulumbu comes on for Morgan Amalfitano, which will add some defensive steel to the West Brom midfield and free up James Morrison to get forward more.
68' SHOULD BE 11 AGAINST 10
West Brom are extremely fortunate to still have 11 men on the field. That Steven Reid challenge could have been a red, but was certainly worth a second yellow.
67' STUNNING SHOT BY WALKER
Kyle Walker has a go from miles out, but his shot swerves alarmingly just before Ben Foster, and the English goalkeeper does very well to make a save.
66' YELLOW CARD
Steven Reid takes down Danny Rose with a poor challenge. He looks set to receive a second yellow, but the ref decides against it and instead books Jonas Olsson for dissent.
62' CHANGE FOR SPURS
Nabil Bentaleb replaces Lewis Holtby in midfield. It's not a surprising change given Bentaleb's impressive cameo against Southampton, but it does see the youngster preferred to French international holding midfielder Etienne Capoue once again.
60' HOLTBY SHOOTS WIDE
Lewis Holtby cuts on to his left foot and pings in a shot, but his effort heads wide. That will be the last involvement for Holtby this afternoon.
58' COULD GO EITHER WAY
The game is wide open at the minute and both teams will fancy their chances of leaving with three points. Spurs are still trying to play attacking football, but West Brom look the more threatening as they pick off the lack of pace of Michael Dawson and lack of power of Vlad Chiriches. In fairness to the two centre-backs, it can't be easy being the only two defensive players on the park.
55' YELLOW CARD
Kyle Walker is booked for a needless shirt-pull, and that means that the right-back will miss the weekend's game against Stoke.
54' TESTING EFFORT
Steven Reid bends in a shot from the free-kick, but Hugo Lloris is equal to it.
53' ACRES OF SPACE ON THE BREAK
Ben Foster manages to punch the ball to safety under pressure from Nacer Chadli, and a poor pass by Michael Dawson leaves Spurs wide open to the West Brom counter. Vlad Chiriches takes one for the team with a lunging challenge that gives away a free-kick in a dangerous position.
50' GREAT HIT BY ROSE
Moments after Roberto Soldado sees a driven cross blocked by Jonas Olsson, it is Danny Rose who goes close to a second for Tottenham with a fizzing drive from distance.
48' SLOPPY START TO THE HALF
Tottenham have tried to up the tempo since the break, but all it has done so far is seen them give the ball away with alarming regularity.
46' SECOND HALF
West Brom get the game back underway with both teams unchanged.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end a fascinating first-half. Tottenham have gone all-out attack in Tim Sherwood's first game as manager but, despite dominating possession and territory, the hosts have struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined West Brom defence. In contrast, West Brom have had a number of great chances on the break, with Zoltan Gera amd James Morrison doing their best to join Matej Vydra on the counter. A stunning Christian Eriksen free-kick gave Tottenham the lead, only for Jonas Olsson to pull one back just a minute later for the Baggies, and West Brom should really be ahead. Matej Vydra has seen two one-on-one efforts saved by Hugo Lloris and missed a close-range header, while James Morrison shanked a shot wide when well-placed just moments before the break. Stay tuned for the second half!
45' GREAT CHANCE!
James Morrison bursts clean through into the box, but skews his shot horribly wide of the far post. That was a great chance for the second!
43' LUCKY FOR FOSTER
Danny Rose does well to flick the ball over his shoulder and put Christian Eriksen into space. The Dane goes for a curling shot towards the far corner, but Ben Foster gets to it well, only to punch straight out into a crowded area. The ball could have fallen to any of a number of Tottenham attackers, but Foster got lucky.
41' INCHES AWAY FROM A SECOND!
James Morrison leaves Michael Dawson for dead with a turn on the by-line, but Zoltan Gera can't quite get a toe to the shot across the face of the goal. If he'd got anything on that it would have been 2-1.
38' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Moments after his free-kick, Christian Eriksen picked up a booking and gave away a set-piece of his own with a poor challenge in midfield. The delivery into the box was poor, but the Spurs marking was even worse. Vlad Chiriches was left with three men to mark on his own, and the result was inevitable as the ball ricocheted to an unmarked Jonas Olsson to poke past Hugo Lloris. 1-1!
37' GOOOAAALLL!!!
The lead didn't last long! Jonas Olsson equalises for West Brom! 1-1!
36' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
There was frustration from Tottenham fans when a move was pulled back for a foul on Kyle Walker, but Christian Eriksen took full advantage. Lewis Holtby stepped over the ball to allow Eriksen the shooting chance, and the free-kick was perfectly placed, going in off the underside of the bar.
35' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Christian Eriksen scores a stunning free-kick for Spurs! 1-0!
33' INTRICATE BUILD-UP
Gylfi Sigurdsson has been heavily involved for Tottenham today, and he does well to win the ball and then jink into space to start an attack. However, the massed ranks of defenders close down the space as the Icelandic international tries to link up with Emmanuel Adebayor and the move breaks down.
30' YELLOW CARD
Steven Reid cynically halts a Spurs counter-attack on the half-way line, and picks up a booking for his trouble.
29' INCHES AWAY FROM AN OPENER!
A perfect Liam Ridgewell cross picks out the head of Matej Vydra, but the striker fails to get a decent connection with the goal gaping. Claudio Yacob very nearly taps it in at the back post, but can't quite stretch enough.
25' PAINFUL BLOW
Gylfi Sigurdsson unleashes a phenomenal shot that catches Jonas Olsson square in the face. The centre-back goes straight down and the ref calls a halt to proceedings to allow the medical stuff to come on.
21' UGLY CHALLENGE
Craig Dawson goes through Roberto Soldado with a tackle that was nowhere near the ball but the West Brom defender escapes a yellow card.
18' LLORIS SAVES SPURS AGAIN!
West Brom are being given a clean run at the Spurs centre-backs on the counter-attack and are looking very dangerous. Matej Vydra gets in behind the defence, but his second touch allows Hugo Lloris the opportunity to come charging to the edge of his area and make a goal-saving intervention. Dawson's lack of pace is being exploited time and time again, while Vlad Chiriches' tendency to linger in possession is also something that the Baggies will look to exploit.
17' TERRIFIC DEFENDING
Nacer Chadli curls a delicious cross from the right towards Emmanuel Adebayor at the back post, but Craig Dawson just manages to get a touch on the ball to take it away from the forward. The corner is aimed towards Adebayor again, but Ben Foster comes out bravely to punch clear.
13' LLORIS TO THE RESCUE!
The game is astonishingly end-to-end. Spurs break in such numbers that West Brom look almost certain to be overwhelmed, but when the Baggies nick possession it is they who work the shooting chance on the counter. Zoltan Gera and Matej Vydra exploit Michael Dawson's lack of pace to work a shooting chance, but Hugo Lloris makes the save and Spurs deal well with the resulting corner.
10' THE FLAG IS UP!
A poorly struck Gylfi Sigurdsson shot works its way through to Roberto Soldado, who puts it on a plate for Emmanuel Adebayor to shoot at an open goal. However, both Spurs strikers were offside.
6' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Spurs burst clear down the left and Nacer Chadli twists his way into space on the edge of the area. His lay-off is intended for Gylfi Sigurdsson, but Emmanuel Adebayor takes it instead and the attack breaks down. Lewis Holtby tries an effort from distance, but his shot is blocked and loops into the arms of the keeper.
4' POSITIVE START BY SPURS
The hosts have come flying out of the blocks, with Danny Rose and Gylfi Sigurdsson heavily involved down the left. West Brom have held firm so far, keeping the front two isolated.
1' KICK-OFF
Tottenham Hotspur get the game underway, kitted out in their usual white shirts with navy blue shorts and socks. West Brom are in red with a white trim.
0' WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Keith Downing makes seven changes, with Matej Vydra rewarded with a start after his equaliser at the weekend.
0' TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS
Spurs stick with their 4-4-2, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado leading the line. Tim Sherwood makes two changes, with Nacer Chadli replacing Erik Lamela and Lewis Holtby coming in for Mousa Dembele. That means that the Spurs central midfield looks set to be Holtby and Eriksen, so expect goals… at both ends!
0' PREVIEW
Tim Sherwood will take charge of Tottenham as permanent manager for the first time when manager-less West Bromwich Albion come to White Hart Lane today. The appointment of the unqualified and inexperienced Sherwood came as a bit of a shock to many supporters of the north London club, but the former Spurs and England midfielder has received plenty of plaudits in the build-up to this game, and will look to continue with the attacking mind-set that helped Tottenham to a 3-2 win under his caretaker control at Southampton last weekend.
0' TOUGH TEST FOR THE BAGGIES
Boxing Day should be a time for celebration, but West Brom go into today's game without a win in seven and still without a manager after the dismissal of Steve Clarke. The Baggies will be expecting to be facing a Tottenham side with the handbrake off, but if they can keep it tight then there will definitely be room on the counter-attack if Sherwood's previous two matches are anything to go by!
