Cardiff City vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
90' SAINTS DOMINANT
Southampton notch their third away win of the season running out clear winners over Cardiff City with three first half goals. Absent defending allowed Jay Rodriguez to net before Rickie Lambert grabbed a brace to make it three on the half hour. Southampton showed superior play in the final third with great movement and slick inter-passing tearing the Cardiff back line to pieces. The home side did show some heart in the second half with Fraizer Campbell chasing down every ball but the Saints were simply too strong. Cardiff will have to pick themselves up for the visit of rock-bottom Sunderland on Saturday.
90' FULL-TIME
The ref blows for full-time. Southampton run out 3-0 winners at Cardiff City Stadium.
89' SAINTS MOVEMENT
Southampton's success has been grounded in the ability of the front men to make runs out wide. The Cardiff defence has been dragged all over the park. Cardiif win a free-kick as Fraizer Campbell is upended again. Southampton pull everyone back and Jose Fonte can clear.
84' SAINTS CLASS ACT
Southampton win a corner with yet more neat interplay and intelligent movement. The away side have looked a class act in the final third. David Marshall collects the ball lofted into his six yard box.
82' CARDIFF SUB
Japanese international Bo-Kyung Kim comes on to replace Aron Gunnarsson. Kim moves over to the left to bolster the Cardiff attack.
76' PACE SLOWED
Southampton are doing all they can to slow this game down. Cardiff have resorted to long balls punted up front looking for the strikers. It looks like this one is heading for a comfortable away victory for the Saints.
75' CARDIFF ATTACK
Cardiff are putting some decent passes together in the final third. Fraizer Campbell is showing touches of class but as yet his searching passes are being cut out by a well organised Saints back line.
72' SAINTS MOVEMENT
Southampton are showing some superb movement up front. Adam Lallana and Steven Davis combine to centre into Rickie Lambert rising at the back post but Cardiff close it out and punt it up field.
67' CARDIFF FRUSTRATED
Southampton are trying to slow the game down, they're taking their time when the ball goes out of play. The home fans don't like it and are vocal in showing their frustration.
64' CARDIFF CHANCE
Fraizer Campbell spins unmarked to get on the end of a stray Paulo Gazzaniga clearance. The Cardiff man rushes his shot, taking it on early when he could have carried it forward, the effort sails up and over the bar.
61' CARDIFF SUB
Welsh international Declan John comes on at left back for Andrew Taylor.
60' CARDIFF CORNER
Cardiff need to take advantage of Peter Whittingham's ability from set pieces. He gets too much on the latest corner ball though, it lofts up and over everyone for a goal kick.
58' SAINTS OFFSIDE
Jay Rodriguez is caught offside looking to get on the end of a hopeful ball up and over the Cardiff backline, they looked short of ideas in the final third for the first time in the game. The tide is turning in this game but the home side need to turn possession into goals if they are to get back into this clash.
54' CARDIFF IMPROVED
Whatever Malky Mackay said to his players at half-time has done the trick, Cardiff look a much improved side in this second spell. Fraizer Campbell is causing real problems and is taking a couple of hard tackles for his trouble.
52' CARDIFF THREATEN
Another beautiful delivery from Peter Whittingham swinging a corner in under Paulo Gazzaniga's bar, the Saints keeper punches up rather than out and it's head tennis in the box before the ball is eventually cleared.
50' CARDIFF CHANCE
Peter Whittingham has a chance to curl another dangerous ball in from a free-kick as Fraizer Campbell is again taken out, Andreas Cornelius rises well but fails to get a clear head on the ball and it loops up over the bar - that's better from Cardiff though.
47' CARDIFF ATTACK
Fraizer Campbell has his ankles clipped on the break and Cardiff can threaten with a free-kick 12 yards from the penalty box. The cross into the box is poor and Southampton defence can clear.
46' KICK-OFF
And Southampton get us underway for the second half at the Cardiff City Stadium.
45' CARDIFF SUB
Andreas Cornelius will replace Peter Odemwingie up front in a half-time switch of the front men.
45' SAINTS DOMINANT
Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased with his side's effort in the first half as Southampton go in 3-0 up over Cardiff City. It's a tumultuous time at Cardiff with Malky Mackay's future uncertain and his players have reflected that in their play. The home side have look directionless with sloppy marking to blame for at least two of Southampton's three goals from set-pieces. It's down the right flank that Southampton are punishing Cardiff providing plenty of fire-power for Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert to net at will.
45' HALF-TIME
The ref bows for half time as Southampton go in 3-0 up over Cardiff City.
45' CARDIFF CHANCE
We're into injury time in the first half as Peter Odemwingie lets a chance go begging, the Cardiff man delayed his strike in the box giving Calum Chambers chance to get a foot in and steal the ball away.
42' CARDIFF ATTACK
Cardiff come forward with their best move of the game. Jose Fonte was forced to turn a dangerous ball in at the near post looking for a Cardiff runner. Finally Cardiff build a decent attack but they can't punish from the corner, Southampton clear.
39' SAINTS DOMINANT
Southampton are ending the half well, the travelling Saints fans are cheering every pass as the away team knock it around with confidence in midfield.
38' SAINTS DOMINANT
Southampton have threatened down the right hand flank all afternoon, Adam Lallana is causing all kinds of problems. Malky Mackay will need to close it off in the second half if Cardiff are to avoid a drumming.
33' CARDIFF STRIKE
Paulo Gazzaniga is forced into a brilliant save! Cardiff worked it well on the wing, a Peter Odemwingie strike took a wicked deflection and the Saints keeper had to be at his best to get down low and keep his side three to the good.
30' LAMBERT CLINICAL
Cardiff failed to clear from the corner at the first attempt, the ball was played back into the danger zone and Rickie Lambert was on hand to ping in with his right foot. David Marshall had no chance, the Cardiff back line seems to have gone missing.
28' GOOAALL!
Rickie Lambert makes it 3-0 to the Saints!
28' SAINTS WIDE PLAY
Southampton win the first corner, they're using the width and over-lapping ability of Adam Lallana well on the right-hand side.
26' CARDIFF BOOKING
Sian Massey flags for a foul by Luke Shaw on Craig Noone on the byline. Shaw will go in the book for the first yellow of the afternoon.
24' POOR DEFENDING
In a carbon copy of the first goal it was excellent play on the byline from Rickie Lambert who centred for Jay Rodriguez with some bright movement lost his marker and finished with a strike on his in-step. Saints again take advantage of poor marking.
21' GGOOAALL!
Jay Rodriguez nets again for the Saints with his eighth goal of the season.
20' PATCHY PLAY
Both sides are struggling to keep the ball for any period of time, Cardiff seem to be reeling from going 1-0 down. The game is in a patchy spell.
17' GOOAALL!
Adam Lallana broke clear and played a low hard ball into the box that by-passed the whole Cardiff back-line, Jay Rodriguez was unmarked to tap in at the back-post.
15' SAINTS CHANCE
Peter Whittingham has missed a golden opportunity to open the score! The ball was played in low, the Saints' keeper committed to the dive to this left but Whittingham failed to hit the target.
12' DEFENDERS ON TOP
Both sides are enjoying periods of possession in midfield but as yet the defenders are coming out on top. With 10 minutes gone we're yet to have an attempt on goal.
8' CAMPBELL PLAY
Fraizer Campbell is looking to impress Malky Mackay on his return to the starting lineup. Campbell holds the ball up well and looks to join up with Peter Odemwingie but his through ball is closed out.
5' SAINTS STRENGTH
England international Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez combine well with a neat one-two on the edge of the D but Cardiff step up and clear the danger. It's a bright start from the Saints who can boast a strong front-line with plenty of fire power.
1' KICK-OFF
And Cardiff get us under way in this Premier League clash at the Cardiff City Stadium.
0' MATCH FACTS
Cardiff have won the last five home league games against the Saints, all by a one-goal margin. None of the last 11 matches in all competitions between Cardiff and Southampton has ended as an away win (nine home wins, two draws). The Saints have only scored three goals in their last seven Premier League games. Cardiff have netted only five goals in their last nine Premier League matches.
0' SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS
Dani Osvaldo, Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne and Kelvin Davis could all return for injury-hit Southampton. The quartet had medicals on Christmas Eve to see whether they can return for the clash in south Wales. Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida are a doubt while Artur Boruc (hand), Victor Wanyama (shin) and Guly do Prado (knee) remain out.
0' CARDIFF TEAM NEWS
Craig Bellamy looks set to miss out as the veteran forward continues to struggle with a knee problem. Fraizer Campbell may return to the starting line-up after 90 minutes on the bench in the weekend defeat at Anfield. Kim Bo-kyung is expected to replace Aaron Gunnarsson.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Cardiff fans will turn out this afternoon to see their side take on Southampton unsure if today marks much-loved manager Malky Mackay's last game in charge. Some 2,000 fans are expected to take part in a pre-match protest against owner Vincent Tan's controversial re-branding of the club and ‘resign or be sacked' treatment of Mackay. On the field Cardiff sit 15th in the Premier League, and with a visit from rock-bottom Sunderland next, they'll want to take the chance to move further away from the bottom three. Southampton's form has stuttered of late after an impressive start under Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Saints have not registered a league win in their last six attempts but still sit 9th on the back of an impressive start to the season. Cardiff have three wins and three draws at home, including a win against Manchester City, while Southampton have notched two wins and three draws from their eight games away from St Mary's.
