Manchester United vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN UTD 2 SWANSEA 0
The relief is palpable all the way around Old Trafford as the champions halt their dismal run of three successive defeats with a comfortable home victory over Swansea. There was little to choose between the sides in a disappointing first half, but the home team took charge after the break and never relinquished their hold on the game. Antonio Valencia gave United the lead two minutes after the restart, sweeping home the rebound after Gerhard Tremmel had kept out the initial header by Shinji Kagawa. The clinching second came just before the hour from Danny Welbeck, who made amends for a glaring miss in the first half.
90' OVER THE BAR
Bony wins himself a free-kick 30 yards from goal and fancies his chances. The effort lacks pace and direction, much like the visitors as a whole tonight.
90' TIME RUNNING OUT
Swansea have three minutes of stoppage time to try and salvage something from this match.
88' PATTERN CONTINUES
Interesting that in today's earlier Premier League matches the three away sides who scored all took maximum points, while the three that drew a blank all lost. That pattern looks set to continue here at OT.
86' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United's second change sees Welbeck replaced by Javier Hernandez.
85' STILL HOPE
Swansea are not done here and moments after playing a dangerous pass, Pozuelo sees a follow-up shot blocked. A goal for the visitors now and the tension would return.
82' WASTED FREE-KICK
Davies hauls down Valencia on the right edge of the box. Januzaj greedily goes for goal but his effort is wayward.
80' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
It's time for a change by United. Evra makes way for Alex Buttner.
77' OFF THE LINE
A wonderful pass by Januzaj sets Rafael away down the left. He in turn puts in Kagawa, who only has the goalkeeper to beat. The Japan midfielder, though, tries to be too clever and sees his effort saved by a combination of goalkeeper and defender on the line.
73' EVRA OUTSTANDING
Evra has been outstanding for United tonight. David Moyes will have to think long and hard before deciding whether to go back in this transfer window and launch a second raid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines.
71' WEAK HEADER
Swansea pass up a great chance, Amat meeting a Davies cross the left with a tame downward header that bounces comfortably up in the hands of De Gea.
69' WIDE FROM WELBECK
Welbeck is brimming with confidence now and he runs from near the halfway line before driving a shot into the Stretford End.
67' DREADFUL MISS
Kagawa crosses superbly from the left and Smalling volleys over a gaping goal from three yards. That's why he plays in defence!
66' PULLING THE STRINGS
Januzaj weaves his way skilfully inside the Swansea area but runs out of room and has to settle for a corner off Williams.
65' SWEETLY STRUCK
Amat plays a pass inside to Pozeulo, whose long-range strike is sweetly struck but always swerving wide of the far post.
63' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Alvaro Vazquez comes on for Swansea, taking the place of Jonjo Shelvey, who has been awful tonight.
61' ON A GOOD RUN
That's now six in six matches for the goal machine that is Danny Welbeck.
60' GOAL DETAILS
Januzaj's cross from the left was only headed out to Evra. He dinked a first-time pass back into the area and an instinctive flick by Welbeck carried the ball beyond Tremmel into the corner.
59' GOAL: MAN UTD 2 SWANSEA 0
Danny Welbeck nets a second for United.
58' POOR AGAIN, JONJO
A clearing header from Smalling falls invitingly to Shelvey on the edge of the United area. He takes a moment to compose himself being driving a quite awful attempt high into the stands.
54' WRONG OPTION
Kagawa drives forward from midfield and selfishly shoots over the bar from distance rather than slide in a ball to put Welbeck in on goal.
53' POINTS IN THE BAG
It's rash prediction time. I don't see any way back for Swansea from here. The current lead is slender, but it's game over already for me.
53' LOOKING FOR MORE
Januzaj threads a pass through to Evra and his cross from the left is just behind two United attackers in the centre. That could so easily have been a second.
50' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Evra lands awkwardly after falling over the shoulder of Pozuelo. The Frenchman is a tough cookie, though, and is fine to continue.
48' GOAL DETAILS
It's the perfect start to the second half for United. Januzaj twisted and turned and finally got in a cross from the left. It skimmed off the top of Williams' head to Kagawa. His close-range header was well saved by Tremmel, but Valencia was on hand to drill home the rebound.
47' GOAL: MAN UTD 1 SWANSEA 0
Antonio Valencia gives United the lead.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Swansea get the second half under way.
45' HT: MAN UTD 0 SWANSEA 0
It's goalless halfway through what has been a pretty drab and featureless match so far. Adnan Januzaj struck the top of the Swansea bar early on with a curling free-kick, but the best chance fell to Danny Welbeck, who shot wide of goal from 12 yards after being set up by Rafael. Swansea have enjoyed a good share of the possession, but done little with it in the attacking third.
45' SWANSEA BOOKING
Bony is cautioned for a scything tackle on Fletcher.
44' SHORT OF IDEAS
How United miss Rooney. There's just no drive forward through the centre of the home midfield. They're working hard, but the quality is lacking.
42' SHOT BLOCKED
Bony lays the ball sideways to Shelvey, whose shot from the edge of the box is blocked.
40' WIDE OF THE MARK
Swansea string together a neat passing move, but Shelvey's cross-shot goes well wide. That's typical of the Swans, decent build-up, but no end product.
38' SWANSEA BOOKING
Rangel is cautioned for a cynical trip on Kagawa.
37' BAD MISS FROM WELBECK
Valencia plays in Rafael down the right and he squares the ball to Welbeck. The striker only has Tremmel to beat from 12 yards, but he screws his shot wide of the far post.
36' FLETCHER SHOOTS OVER
Evra collects a pass from Carrick down the left and his cross is played back by Valencia to Fletcher, who drives a shot into the stands. That's better from United.
33' DITHERING KAGAWA
Evra plays in Kagawa down the left, but the Japanese dithers and then crosses straight to Tremmel.
32' CREDIT TO JANUZAJ
Januzaj rides a challenge from Shelvey and plays on, trying to lead a United counter. You have to give the youngster credit there. He might have been developing a bit of a reputation as a diver, but he passed up the chance to go to ground on that occasion. Cynics might point out that the foul was not inside the penalty area, however.
30' DROPPING LIKE FLIES
It must be a worry for Michael Laudrup how long his injury list is becoming. I'm sure the Swans boss is happy with his squad, but he may have to raid the transfer kitty this month just to bring in some fit personnel.
28' EVRA DENIED
Evra picks up the ball on the left edge of the Swansea area and drives in a low shot towards the far corner that is safely gathered by Tremmel.
25' PLENTY IN RESERVE
With Ryan Giggs, Wilfried Zaha and Javier Hernandez also on the United bench, it is clear Moyes is making sure he is not short of ammunition should his side need to chase the game late on.
23' STRONG BENCH
United recalled attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard from his loan spell at Birmingham over the festive period, so we have a Lingard and a Lindegaard on the home bench tonight.
21' DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS
We all love stats, but sometimes they can be misleading. Like this one: Chico Flores has completed 921 passes, second in the Premier League behind only Yaya Toure. Are you telling me Chico is the second-best passer in the top flight? Pull the other one!
18' ALL CHANGE
Flores slots into centre-back, with Amat pushing forward into midfield. Canas looks in some discomfort, he may be out for a while.
17' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Canas limps off to be replaced by Chico Flores.
16' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Canas is down getting treatment to his right shin or ankle. His day looks done.
15' FLOWING FOOTBALL
Swansea carve United apart again with some delightful football. Shelvey puts in Routledge, whose first touch is heavy and he concedes possession inside the United area.
13' SUPPORT FOR MOYES
It's pleasing to report there are no “Moyes out” banners on display at Old Trafford tonight. Some younger fans even asked the United boss for his autograph as he made his way to the bench before kick-off.
11' OFF THE CROSSBAR
From the resulting free-kick, Januzaj's curling effort smashes against the top of the crossbar.
10' SUPERB STOP
Tremmel makes a fantastic save to deny Valencia, but the whistle had already gone for a foul on Welbeck.
7' CHANCE WASTED
A Januzaj free-kick from the right causes mayhem in the Swansea defence. Vidic slices over from close range.
5' TAME EFFORT
Swansea play some slick football with Routledge laying the ball back to Shelvey. The former Liverpool man gives De Gea catching practice with a tame effort with the outside of his right foot.
3' POINTS SO CRUCIAL
A win, however, and the Swans will rise three places to 10th above Hull and into the top half of the table.
2' GAP IS CLOSING
A chastening thought for Swansea fans is that after today's earlier results their side is only four points off the foot of the table.
1' HERE WE GO
United kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
United make three changes to the side that lost to Tottenham in their last league game, with Rafael, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher coming in for Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Wayne Rooney. Swansea also make three changes. In come Jordi Amat, Leon Britton and Alex Pozuelo for Chico, Pablo Hernandez and Jonathan de Guzman.

0' PREVIEW
It must feel like Groundhog Day to Manchester United manager David Moyes at the moment - a never-ending nightmare 90 minutes that plays out to the same hellish scenario week after week after week. Only seven days ago United haters were revelling in the Red Devils crashing out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage for only the second time in 29 years. Then followed in midweek a narrow defeat to Sunderland in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Now Moyes looks along his 2014 Manchester United year planner and who should await: but another visit from the same Swansea side who extinguished his side's FA Cup dreams only last weekend. Incredibly, should United come out second best today it would mark the first time they have lost four successive matches in the same season since 1961. When Moyes took over at Old Trafford in May, this was not the sort of history he had envisaged making. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
It's true Robin van Persie gets most of United's goals, but Wayne Rooney is the man who really makes the champions tick with his tireless work all over the pitch on behalf of the team. With both of these two influential figures again ruled out, much will depend on Danny Welbeck, who scored twice against the Swans earlier in the season and now has seven for the season, including five in his last five games. Welbeck ended a run of 427 days without a home league goal with a strike against West Ham just before Christmas and has now scored in successive home league games. United will also look to cause a threat from corners. Nemanja Vidic scored from one against Sunderland in the League Cup in midweek and his defensive colleague Patrice Evra did likewise in the match at Swansea last season. For the visitors, Wilfried Bony was exceptional at times last weekend and will look to lead the champions a merry dance again.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 10 wins to six by Tottenham and five games being drawn. At Old Trafford, United have eight wins, there have been two draws and we still await the first league triumph by the Swans. The first meeting between the sides on the opening day of the season saw United win 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium with Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both netting twice. The corresponding match last season on May 12 finished in a 2-1 win to United. Michu (49 mins) cancelled out a first-half strike from Javier Hernandez before Rio Ferdinand won it with a rare goal three minutes from time.
0' FORM GUIDE
United start the day in seventh place with 34 points from 20 games, five points adrift of the Champions League places and 11 behind leaders Arsenal. In all competitions United have lost five times at home already this season and four times in their last six games at Old Trafford. Swansea lie in 13th place with 21 points, only four clear of the relegation zone. While United have lost three straight in all competitions, their defeat at Tottenham on New Year's Day brought to an end a run of four successive victories in the Premier League. Swansea are winless in six games in the league and have won just two of their last 12 overall and just one of their last seven (at Fulham in November) away from home.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
United will again be without first-choice strikers Wayne Rooney (groin) and Robin van Persie (thigh). Rio Ferdinand (knee), Phil Jones (knee), Marouane Fellaini (wrist), Nani (hamstring) and Ashley Young (shoulder) are also out injured, and Fabio is suspended having been sent off against Swansea in the FA Cup last weekend. The Swans have selection headaches of their own, with Jonathan de Guzman (calf), Roland Lamah (groin) and Dwight Tiendalli (hamstring) the latest additions to a lengthy injury list that already featured Nathan Dyer (ankle), Pablo Hernandez (hamstring), Garry Monk and Michel Vorm (both knee) and Michu (ankle).
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Chris Foy, who has been on the select list of referees since 2001. This season the Merseyside official has shown 30 yellow cards in his 11 Premier League matches to date. His dismissal of Mikel Arteta in Arsenal's win at Crystal Palace in October was not only his first of this campaign, but only his second in the last 45 top-flight outings. He did, however, send off Chelsea's Eden Hazard in the Capital One Cup tie at Swansea in January. His assistants today are Peter Kirkup and John Flynn, while Bobby Madley is the fourth official.
