Newcastle United vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
It's all over here and Pellegrini's sigh of relief is almost audible above the boos that ring out around the stadium. They are not directed at the players however, but squarely at the referee, who, it would seem incorrectly, ruled out a superb Tiote strike in the first half which would have brought Newcastle level and provided a platform for them to pick up an unlikely win against the Citizens. It wasn't to be however, and Dzeko's 12th minute strike gave City the lead which was doubled after Negredo struck in the fourth minute of injury time, after a nasty looking injury to Nasri meant there were seven minutes added on. Newcastle can take great heart from this performance and will hope to perform this well for the rest of the season. City's blue juggernaut rolls on however and they were clinical again here to secure another vital three points.
Another for the Spaniard's collection here after he is set clean through by James Milner. Tim Krul did superbly to deny the first shot but a fortunate rebound left the frontman with an open goal and he duly slotted home. Very unlucky for Newcastle and Krul who have given their all here.
Negredo scores, assisted by Milner.
Taylor is flagged offside when he looked onside and Newcastle had a great chance there. His shot was dragged wide and wouldn't have counted but Newcastle are having a real go here as Ben Arfa wriggles free and crosses straight into Hart's waiting grasp after a superb tackle by Kolarov to deny Taylor again.
Seven minutes of added time to be played here after that Nasri injury. Krul out sharply to deny Silva a chance and Newcastle look to work it forward quickly.
Ben Arfa breaks forward but slips and from the resulting break the ball is cleared off the line after Negredo squirms a shot under Krul, Steven Taylor the man there when his team needed him most. End to end stuff as Newcastle immediately win a corner and Remy guides his free header just wide.
Fernandinho is denied twice there for City, first with a shot that is blocked away and then with a firm header which crashes off the bar. Lucky escape for Newcastle there.
We're into the last five minutes of normal time here but there will surely be a large amount of added time after that injury to Nasri. City are on the attack here though and Kolarov goes down under the challenge of Santon. Free kick in a dangerous area for City here.
Jesus Navas is in behind here but great defending from Steven Taylor blocks the ball out for a corner. Haidara and Ben Arfa are on for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Gouffran.
It's looking like a stretcher job for Samir Nasri here and he is carried off the pitch in visible distress. It looked a nasty one and his left knee bore the brunt there. We're back underway now after a lengthy break.
Yanga M'biwa is booked now and Newcastle have another name in the book. Anita has left the field to be replaced by Papiss Cisse, and Nasri is in trouble after that M'biwa tackle. James Milner is warming up on the sideline and will be on shortly.
Nasri is denied by Krul but his shot was tame after good work down the left by Silva and Kolarov. That was City's best period of play so far this half, but Newcastle nearly go one better as some smart play leads to a chance for Santon who can only fire over from 20 yards.
Cabaye is walking on eggshells here and Mike Jones is really having to think hard after another clumsy tackle but again resists sending the Frenchman off. Gouffran gets the ball and floats one towards the back post and a mix up between Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany allows Remy to strike at goal, which Hart keeps out superbly.
Yohan Cabaye is already on a booking and is lucky to escape another there after a clumsy tackle. It is perhaps open to speculation that if that goal had stood for Newcastle in the first half Jones would not have been quite so lenient there.
City are trying to reassert some control over proceedings here and they almost have a second when Negredo plays a lovely through ball for Navas, whose cross is diverted behind.
Cabaye's delivery from set plays has been superb today and he causes problems again for City. Hart punches clear and it's Tiote who meets it but his strike is way off target this time.
Cabaye hits a sweet strike from 30 yards after good work from Tiote but Hart springs to his left to deny Newcastle their equaliser. Shortly afterwards, Santon goes down right on the edge of the box and its a free kick for Newcastle.
A close range header is saved smartly by Krul down to his left and the ball is smashed away. The game is very finely poised at this point and Hart has to come out smartly to head a dangerous through ball away. Soon afterwards a moment of miscommunication between Hart and his defence almost allows Newcastle a chance but City clear once more.
A moment of slight hesitation in the Newcastle box and the ball falls for Negredo who turns sharply but can only scoop over from eight yards out.
Man City are under the cosh here as Newcastle harass and harry them in their own half, but they have the composure and presence of mind to play the ball out of danger. Navas takes to the field in place of the goalscorer Edin Dzeko.
A cynical trip on Toure gets Tiote a booking and he joins fellow midfielders Cabaye and Sissoko in the book. Remy is set clear shortly afterwards but elects to cut back inside when he should have shot with his left and the ball is cleared.
A long free kick is headed down towards Anita who fires one in but it's a regulation save for Joe Hart. Good positive start from the hosts and confusion reigns as Hart elects to punch clear.
We're off again and the crowd are well up for this one now. They will be hoping their team can keep their heads here though and play as well as they were when that goal was chalked off.
The referee brings the first half to a close and boos ring out around St James' Park. Alan Pardew is waiting for the referee on the touchline and audibly protests on the way into the tunnel, and perhaps with some justification. City bossed the early exchanges and took a deserved lead through Dzeko after superb work on the left from Kolarov. Newcastle rallied however and thought they had a way back into the game after Tiote's thunderous strike, only to see the goal disallowed in extremely controversial circumstances. A cracker of a second half on the cards here and several players will need to be careful after picking up yellow cards for a succession of reckless fouls.
Zabaleta joins Fernandinho in the book after a clever foul prevents Sissoko breaking at pace.
That disallowed goal has fired up the home crowd and the sense of injustice around the ground is palatable. They must try to channel it positively however and with several bookings in the last few minutes Mike Jones is in danger of losing control of the game here.
Possession has swung massively in the home side's favour but City are riding the storm at the moment and should Newcastle fail to capitalise on this momentum City will be looking to double their advantage at the first available opportunity.
The ball is again fired long into the City box and there was a suggestion of a nudge in the back of Taylor there. The Newcastle players need to keep their heads here though as Cabaye joins Sissoko and Santon in the referee's book.
The ball breaks to Tiote who lashes in a fierce drive from 25 yards but after a brief chat with his official over on the right the referee disallows the goal. Alan Pardew can't believe it, and it appears to have been given because several Newcastle players were in an offside position. Very harsh on Tiote and Newcastle there as it seems none of those players were actually impacting play.
Cheick Tiote fires one in from the left. But it's disallowed!
A corner comes in from the left hand side and Steven Taylor just misses to the left of City's goal. The replay shows Negredo got their first. Brave defending by the centre forward there.
A cross is whipped in again from the City left and Santon overrules the shout from Krul to hook the ball away. Kolarov is enjoying the freedom of the left side of the pitch and it seems Debuchy's absence is being keenly felt at the moment as M'biwa is struggling to keep up with play.
The game has settled down somewhat now and Newcastle are coming back into it slightly. A good cross by Gouffran narrowly fails to find Cabaye at the back post. Nasri was nowhere there and totally gave up tracking his man, which could be a potential weakness for the home side to exploit.
Kolarov pushes Sissoko in the back and Newcastle have a free kick out on the right. Cabaye swings it in but it's a poor one and it's hooked away easily.
The ball falls to Cabaye on the half way line who stabs a ball through for Remy who has the freedom of the City half but is denied by the off side flag. He was off there but City need to be careful in possession.
The two sides are sharing possession evenly here but that may be a surprising stat to many as City are clearly bossing it here. Newcastle do look dangerous on the break though and City have shown vulnerability at the back this season.
Williamson brings down his man with a bump in the back, much to the chagrin of the home support who felt the City player went down easily. Cabaye is then brought down and from the resulting floated free kick the ball breaks to Taylor in the box but his cross is cleared away.
A short corner for City and Silva whips in a cross for Negredo to head at goal but it is just over. Pellegrini with a knowing smile suggests that that was one straight from the training ground.
Steven Taylor introduces himself to the back of Dzeko's leg with an agricultural challenge. The centre half protests his innocence but he did go through the back of Dzeko there and a deserved free kick.
Remy beats his full back and puts in a tame cross that is easily cleared and City go close from the resulting break, that man Kolarov again involved as he drills the ball across the box, just too far in front of Negredo.
The ball is worked forward by City and Silva slips the ball into the channel for Kolarov, who provides an inch perfect cross for Dzeko to smash the ball home. Poor defending by Newcastle there and City are off to a flyer.
Dzeko scores, assisted by Kolarov.
Early corner for Newcastle here after Gouffran's shot was blocked away. Cabaye swings it in and Silva hooks the ball away, no danger for City there.
Moussa Sissoko breaks down the right and looks to thread Cabaye through. His attempted pass is blocked and the ball sits up for him to strike but it is well over Hart's goal.
Cheick Tiote brings down Kolarov with a clumsy tackle, and the game is off to a rapid start here, the ball changing hands with regularity and both teams looking to break at pace.
A big boost for Newcastle is the timely return from injury of Yohan Cabaye. He looks to be occupying the number ten role today in behind Remy and has had some success in that role so far this season.
We're underway here and Newcastle field the strongest line up available to them, against a Manchester City side who welcome back Navas to the bench following a short injury lay off.
All of the stats point towards a goal fest today, with the last five meetings between these sides yielding 16 goals, 14 of those for Manchester City. City have netted 57 times this season so far but have conceded 23, the most in the top four on both counts, and in their last nine games they have outscored opponents 29-11. Newcastle seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet at home, although they have conceded only one at home in their last five games. The Toon were unlucky to lose to Arsenal recently and have found a somewhat unusual stability in defence this season, although the loss of Coloccini to injury and Debuchy to suspension will be keenly felt and the makeshift back four will face an extremely tough test against the likes of Negredo.
Newcastle take on Manchester City at St James' Park this afternoon sitting reasonably pretty in 8th place after a superb start to the season. The doom and gloom surrounding the North East club after a summer of inactivity in the transfer market has all but dissipated, but their recent run of form is in as sharp contrast to this start as the black and white stripes adorning their strip. Lose today and they will be on their longest losing streak for over a year, having slipped to defeats in their last three games, against Arsenal and West Brom in the Premier League and Cardiff in the F.A. Cup. The manner of the defeat to Cardiff has caused the familiar rumblings of discontent to resurface, and fans are less than happy, with their clubs failure to progress beyond the fourth round of any domestic cup competitions since Mike Ashley's arrival a real bone of contention. An enforced reshuffle in defence will be the last thing Alan Pardew wanted, especially considering the form of today's opponents. Manchester City have been simply irresistible at times this season, and are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League encounters with Newcastle, however a touch of inconsistency has always been present and is the main reason they are second rather than first in the league, only having won 40% of their games away from the Etihad. If they can correct this, starting today with a victory here, then they are surely huge favourites for the title. Alvaro Negredo has been a star so far with eight goals and some eye catching performances since his arrival from Sevilla in the summer. Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas have all performed admirably thus far and the long awaited return of the talismanic Vincent Kompany in defence has brought a degree of defensive stability that was sorely lacking. All of these factors, combined with the steely resolve of their Chilean boss Manuel Pellegrini, and Newcastle's recent poor form, seem to point towards a comfortable victory today, and in the longer term, a determined Manchester City assault on the title.
Newcastle will be without Mathieu Debuchy and Fabricio Coloccini for today's clash, Debuchy banned for a reckless tackle against West Brom, while Coloccini suffered a knee injury in that same ill-fated trip to the Hawthorns. Tim Krul and Yohan Cabaye should return however and will provide a much needed boost. For the visitors, Yaya Toure, Jesus Navas and Micah Richards all return after recent knocks, but City will be without Aguero, Jovetic and Rodwell who are all several weeks away from fitness.
Taking charge of today's fixture is Mike Jones. The Chester born official has overseen 19 games so far this season, issuing 63 yellow cards and two reds. He is aided by assistants Stephen Child and Ron Ganfield. The fourth official for today's game is Martin Atkinson.
