Manchester City vs. Cardiff City
Minute Commentary
90' MAN CITY 4-2 CARDIFF
You can always guarantee goals at the Etihad Stadium, and today was no different as Man City came out on top in a six-goal contest. Edin Dzeko scored City's 100th goal of the season with a scuffed shot that just went over the line to give the hosts the lead before the impressive Craig Noone finished a fine team move with a cool finish to make matters level. Jesus Navas reclaimed the lead for his team though as the ball dropped fortuitously for him on the edge of the area. The Bluebirds began the second 45 minutes well, and put their opponents under some pressure before Yaya Toure killed them off with a powerful finish following Sergio Aguero's lay-off. The Argentine substitute then got his name on the scoresheet as he weaved his way past Steven Caulker and then fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net past the helpless David Marshall. There was still time for one more though, as Frazier Campbell tapped home from two yards out as City failed to deal with a corner. Aguero might feel he could have added another, but that would have been very harsh on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men. The Citizens lie just one point off the top of the table after Arsenal's win against Fulham, while Cardiff sit on the bottom of the pile after Crystal Palace beat Stoke and Sunderland claimed a point against Southampton. We hate to say we told you so Mr Tan, but sacking Malky Mackay could be the biggest mistake you'll ever make if the Premier League table is anything to go by.
90' CITY WIN AGAIN AT THE ETIHAD
It is another home victory for Man City as Neil Swarbrick brings an end to a pulsating contest.
90' GOALMOUTH SCRAMBLE
Kolarov sprints up the touchline straight from the kick-off, cuts inside and sends in a low effort that is saved by David Marshall. Just as it looks as though Aguero will poke it home, Ben Turner slides in to clear. What a finish to this game!
90' MAN CITY 4-2 CARDIFF
The Cardiff corner virus strikes again for Man City, as Frazier Campbell gets on the end of the delivery and toe-pokes home to make it 4-2.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Frazier Campbell does grab a consolation goal for the visitors though!
90' NOONE NEARLY AT THE DOUBLE
Craig Noone has been Cardiff's bright spark this afternoon, and he is very close to finding a consolation goal here, sending a swerving shot in that is tipped wide by Joe Hart.
90' OFF THE POST
James Milner, who has just come on for the Citizens, hustles and bustles his way past Frazier Campbell and towards the byline, and his eventual pull-back is defleted onto the post by the Cardiff striker. Four minutes have been added on.
87' SUPER SAVE
A triangle of passes between Kolarov, Clichy and Dzeko sees the latter poke out a toe to send an instictive shot on goal, but David Marshall gets down quickly to push the ball wide. As things stand, Cardiff are going bottom of the Barclays Premier League.
85' SENDING OUT A MESSAGE
They were superlative in the first 45 minutes, but quite average in the second half. Nevertheless, the home side have scored two quality goals in this half and have finished off the match. 4-1 is very harsh on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, and it could yet get worse.
81' MAN CITY 4-1 CARDIFF
This is very harsh on the Bluebirds based on their second half showing, but that is an outstanding goal from an outstanding player. Yaya Toure picks out Aguero with a raking ball downfield, and the Argentine twists Caulker inside-out with some lovely footwork before blasting the ball into the roof of the net. City's goal glut at the Etihad contiunes for another week.
80' GOOOAAALLL!!!
That definitely is game over as Sergio Aguero makes it 4-1 to the hosts!
78' MAN CITY 3-1 CARDIFF
That very much looks like game over at the Etihad Stadium. Yaya Toure bursts forward, exhanges quick passes with Aguero, and rifles a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards out. The Ivorian looks like he has done himself a mischief in the process though.
77' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Yaya Toure has surely seen off Cardiff here! 3-1 to City!
75' AGUERO COULD WRAP IT UP
Sergio Aguero makes his presence known as he leads the counter-attack for his team. He shows great strength to get away from Steven Caulker, but his shot on the turn from the angle flies over the bar.
74' WORRIED CROWD
They were in fine voice earlier on, but the City fans are getting a touch nervy at the moment. They are giving the ball away regularly, and the visitors are growing in confidence and playing their best football of the match. This should be an interesting last 15 minutes.
70' PUTTING THE PRESSURE ON
If the first 45 minutes were anything to go by, City should be winning this match at a canter, but their opponents are digging their heels in and making them sweat. They put a couple of balls into the box, which are nervously dealt with - there are signs that the Bluebirds can be the first team to get something from the Etihad Stadium this season here.
68' TWO SUBS FOR CARDIFF
As they look for a way back into this match, Cardiff make two changes, with Craig Bellamy and Declan John entering the fray for Peter Whittingham and Kevin McNaughton respectively.
65' NOONE ENJOYING HIMSELF
Craig Noone is looking a player and a half for the Bluebirds based on this showing. He picks up the ball in his own area and runs all the way to the City box, taking on Demichelis and Kompany in the process. His eventual shot towards the near post is pushed behind by Hart though. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are to get back into this one, expect no one but Noone to be behind it.
63' CITY CHANGE
Manuel Pellegrini decides that Alvaro Negredo has run his race and takes off the Sapniard for Sergio Aguero. Negredo looks dejected with that, but the home fans are happy to see Aguero back in action. The Cardiff defenders probably aren't I imagine.
61' WOULD HAVE BEEN SENSATIONAL
How good a goal would that have been? Kolarov pings a cross into Dzeko, who takes all the weight and speed off the ball and lays it off forst-time for Silva, but his shot flies past the far post. Brilliant football, but the score remains at 2-1.
59' DECENT PENALTY SHOUT?
From that earlier Cardiff corner, it appeared as though Javi Garcia was holding Jordon Mutch's shirt as the ball came in. There were no great appeals from the visiting players, but if that was outside the area it would have been a free-kick. That was silly from Garcia, and Neil Swarbrick might just have missed a trick there.
58' INCHES AWAY
Pablo Zabaleta dinks a cross in from the right and Alvaro Negredo is desperately close from nodding it in from point blank range. For the moment though, Cardiff survive.
55' SET PIECES VITAL
As we saw in the reverse fixture, set plays could be massive for Cardiff this afternoon. Quick feet from Frazier Campbell wins his side a free-kick, but it is cleared for a corner. Whittngham whips it in and Joe Hart has to be quick to save down low from Ben Turner. This has been a far more even half than the first up to now.
53' CHANCES FOR BOTH
This game is really opening up now and we have a decent spectacle on our hands. Martin Demichelis does well to head clear a dangerous Peter Whittingham cross, before Edin Dzeko springs into life at the other end, taking on Steven Caulker, but sending his shot well wide of the near post.
51' HART'S PALMS STUNG
Jordon Mutch gets the opportunity to run at Martin Demichelis, and he does exactly that before releasing a shot that delfects off the Argentine on its way to goal. Joe Hart dives to save at the near post though. A warning for City there.
50' CITY POT SHOTS
The hosts get forward in numbers again, with the ball breaking for Silva on the edge of the area. He takes a dig at goal, and when it is blocked, Zabaleta heads it back for Yaya Toure, who skies his attempt.
48' CAN'T GET OUT
At times Cardiff have done really well to thwart City's attacks, but then they struggle to get the ball into the opposition half. A lack of options here sees Jordon Mutch have to put the ball out for a Man City throw-in in his own half. This looks like being an uphill struggle for the Bluebirds.
46' BACK IN ACTION
The visitors, looking to propel themselves off bottom spot, get the second half underway.
45' MAN CITY 2-1 CARDIFF
They say the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world, and that is not without justification. However, this first half has been somewhat of an exception, as it has looked like men against boys out there, and that is no disrespect to Cardiff. The hosts dominated the first quarter of an hour and got their reward, and their 100th goal of the campaign, when David Silva's pull back was just about scuffed in by Edin Dzeko, with Kevin McNaughton close to performing some goal line heroics. Negredo wasted some chances after that, before the Bluebirds somehow equalised through Craig Noone. It was a wonderful goal as they carved City open down the right and then Noone got the ball in a central position and outwitted Kompany before finishing past Joe Hart very neatly. It didn't take long for the home outfit to be spurred into action though, as poor defending from Ben Turner saw Jesus Navas granted the chance to make it 2-1, and he took it, finding the far corner of Marshall's goal. The rest of the half was played on the edge of Cardiff's box, and that could just be the tale of the second period too.
45' CITY IN FRONT AT HALF TIME
The half time whistle blows, and Man City enter the interval leading 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
45' TWO ADDED MINUTES
There will be two minutes of injury time at the end of this first half. It is just a case of hanging on for Cardiff at present. Another goal would surely kill them off.
42' HANGING ON
Every time the visitors clear the ball, it is finding a blue shirt on the edge of the area. It is relentless pressure, but Cardiff are just about staying in there at the moment. This is what Muhammad Ali called the "rope-a-dope" tactic. Only problem is, the team using it is losing.
39' IMPRESSIVE PRESSING
You have to feel sorry for the Bluebirds here - they are trying to pass the ball out from defence, but it is a nigh on impossible task the way their opponents are hounding them off the ball. Javi Garcia does well to stop them clearing the ball this time, and then Jesus Navas forces an unlikely corner off Theophile Catherine. The home fans cheer, and so they might. This is just ridiculous stuff from their team.
37' SURELY A PENALTY?
Edin Dzeko is once more denied a clear penalty as he tries to control a long ball into the box. Ben Turner needlessly shoves him in the back, and is very fortunate to get away with that. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men will be very disappointed that they didn't keep the score at 1-1 for longer here.
35' MAN CITY 2-1 CARDIFF
I predicted a goalfest, and we definitely have one here! Yay Toure sends Edin Dzeko clear with a fine ball from his own half. The scorer of the first goal is caught up by Ben Turner, but he doesn't do well enough and the ball breaks for Jesus Navas on the edge of the box. The Spanish flyer then composes himself and finds the far corner with a sidefooted finish.
34' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Jesus Navas puts City back in the lead with a neat finish!
30' MAN CITY 1-1 CARDIFF
It is completely against the run of play, but that is a lovely goal from the visitors! A ball down the channel is squared for Craig Nonne by Peter Whittingham, and the youngster leaves Kompany for dead before coolly slotting the ball past Joe Hart and into the near post. We're even stevens at the Etihad!
29' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Unbelievable! Cardiff find an equaliser through Craig Noone!
28' OFFSIDE FLAG HALTS NEGREDO
Just like in midweek, Aleksander Kolarov and Alvaro Negredo link up nicely, with the former feeding the latter, but the Spanish frontman is offside. That would have been a certain goal, but Caulker and Turner did well with their offisde trap.
25' SHOULD BE TWO
Wonderful play by City again as they open their oppnents up, but Cardiff should really be doing better defensively. Pablo Zabaleta plays a casual ball through for Negredo, who sticks his effort wide of the far post with the outside of his left boot. You can see why Pellegrini's men have scored 100 goals already this season - this is sumptuous football.
22' SILVA HAVING A FIELD DAY
David Silva is running the show for Man City this afternoon - the Spaniard dinks a lovely ball over the top for Negredo, but the man they call "The Beast" can't volley it over the top of Marshall, who saves easily.
20' TRYING IN VAIN
The visitors are attempting to get the ball down and play good football, but such is the intensity and efficiency of City's pressing, they are finding it hard to do so at present. Gary Medel and Peter Whittingham exchange passes, with the latter trying to release Frazier Campbell, but Vincent Kompany cuts it out.
18' YELLOW CARD FOR NEGREDO
Alvaro Negredo goes into a 50/50 clash with Aron Gunnarsson and arrives late, catching the midfielder with a poor challenge. The Spaniard receives a caution for a silly foul - it's almost as if he doesn't know he's in my Fantasy Football team.
15' MAN CITY 1-0 CARDIFF
It's not the prettiest way to score your 100th goal of the season, but Man City fans will care not a jot! David Silva ducks and weaves his way to the byline before pulling the ball back for Edin Dzeko, who scuffs the ball towards the empty net. Kevin McNaughton does his best to clear it off the line, but replays show clear distance between the line and the ball. The goal is correctly allowed, and the hosts have the lead their play up to now has deserved.
14' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Edin Dzeko gives Man City the lead - was the ball over the line though?
11' CLOSE TO AN OWN GOAL
We are barely ten minutes in, but you can say with confidence that a goal is coming. Navas' pace sees him break free down the right, and his cross towards Dzeko is nearly put into his own net by the sliding Ben Turner. It is David Marshall to the rescue once more for the Bluebirds though.
9' MARSHALL ALERT FOR CARDIFF
David Silva breaks forward down the left-hand side once more, and his attempted through ball towards Alvaro Negredo deflects into the path of Dzeko, who sivels and shoots towards the near post, but David Marshall is sharp, saving it with a strong right hand.
6' SHARP DEFENDING
From a Cardiff corner that is cleared by the first man, City break at pace through Navas. However, Theophile Catherine does extremely well to get back to stop the pacy winger and earn his side a free-kick. Cardiff can't just sit back and defend, but they can't leave themselves open to counter-attacks like that either.
4' MONOPOLISING POSSESSION
As you would expect, the first five minutes have seen an awful lot of Man City possession, with the home side spraying the ball around with confidence. Just looking at that replay, that looked a clear penalty on Edin Dzeko. Was it too early to give a penalty? If so, is that not a ridiculous unwritten rule?
2' PENALTY FOR CITY?
It's action packed already in Manchester within the first 30 seconds. David Silva breaks the offside trap and slides a ball into the path of Edin Dzeko, who just has David Marshall to beat. Kevin McNaughton slides from behind and takes the Bosnian out, but the ref waves play on. Jesus Navas then puts the loose ball narrowly wide of the far post. Not a bad start all in all.
1' KICK OFF
The hosts get us under way at the Etihad Stadium. I'm predicting a goalfest.
0' FULL TEAMS
Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov, Jesus Navas, Toure, Javi Garcia, Silva, Negredo, Dzeko. Subs: Lescott, Milner, Aguero, Clichy, Fernandinho, Pantilimon, Nastasic. Cardiff: Marshall, Theophile-Catherine, Caulker, Turner, McNaughton, Medel, Noone, Gunnarsson, Mutch, Whittingham, Campbell. Subs: Hudson, Odemwingie, Kim, Eikrem, Lewis, Bellamy, John.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sergio Aguero could make a return to the starting eleven for the hosts after his FA Cup cameo against Blackburn in midweek, but Yaya Toure and David Silva are doubts, with the midfield duo having late fitness tests to identify whether they can play. Stevan Jovetic and Jack Rodwell remain absent for City, and Samir Nasri has been ruled out until March after picking up a nasty injury in the 2-0 win over Newcastle last Sunday. For Cardiff, Andrew Taylor and Jordan Mutch will be unavailable with ankle and hamstring problems respectively, but Craig Bellamy is looking for a starting role after coming off the bench in last weekend's loss to West Ham.
0' REF WATCH
Neil Swarbrick will be our referee this afternoon, with the 48-year-old taking charge of his eleventh match in the Premier League this season. Up to now, Swarbrick has an average of 3.2 cards a match, as he has given out 32 bookings and sent no one off to date. The man from Preston might just have an easier day at the office than usual today, as Man City have been the least fouled team in the division, while Cardiff have been the third least frequent offenders in England's top flight, giving away just 206 fouls. He will no doubt be eager to avoid making an error as big as Mike Jones made in City's last game against Newcastle – if he does though, something tells me the home crowd won't be too critical of him.
0' IS OLE GUNNAR KEEP CARDIFF UP?
In the weeks after that stunning victory over Man City, it looked like everything in the Cardiff garden was looking rosy. However, Vincent Tan clearly had other ideas, and decided to throw a spanner in the works by putting incredible amounts of pressure on then-manager Malky Mackay to leave the club. Eventually he was sacked, and for a number of weeks now, the Bluebirds have looked to be in freefall. The man who is attempting to steer the ship in the right direction is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former Molde manager has some things to put right though – today's visitors have won none of their last five league matches, losing four of them, while they have emerged victorious in just one of their last eleven domestic contests. Their away form hasn't been great either, as they have lost their last three on the road, and are winless in seven consecutive away games. They have also scored the least goals away from their own turf in the whole division, with just five coming away from the Cardiff City Stadium. Solskjaer's men currently sit in 18th, and if the stats are to be believed, it is unlikely they will be any higher than that come the end of play this evening.
0' SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR THE BLUES
Is there a more daunting task in world football at the moment than going to the Etihad Stadium? If there is, I don't want to see it. The 2012 champions have been in imperious form on their home ground so far in the campaign, and the worrying thing is their away form is getting better all the time as well. There are a number of stats I could reel off for you to exemplify City's home dominance, but the match starts in a couple of hours, so I'll just pick out the best ones. In their ten Premier League matches at the Etihad Stadium this season, they have won every single one of them, scoring 38 goals in the process, while they have scored in their last 60 fixtures in their own stadium, coming close to breaking the record of 63 set by rivals Man Utd. It hasn't just been offensively that City have been impressive either – their record of six goals conceded at home is the joint best record in the division – there is no weakness by the looks of things. Good luck Cardiff.
0' PREVIEW
Death, taxes and Manchester City winning at the Etihad Stadium – the three things you can rely on in life. Sorry Cardiff fans, but that is only a slight exaggeration ahead of this afternoon's match between Manuel Pellegrini's men and the Bluebirds. However, the last time these two sides met, it was the newly-promoted team that shocked the Citizens, winning a five-goal thriller 3-2 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Additionally, Cardiff won their second-to-last encounter against Man City, that coming in the 1994 FA Cup, before the boys in blue were able to throw money at world class players as regularly as Phil Taylor throws a dart at treble 20. Will we see a repeat of the shock in the early parts of the season? Or will City extend their incredible run on home turf? There is only one way to find out – join us here at 15:00 when we will be covering the game from the first kick right up until the final whistle.
