Crystal Palace vs. Stoke City
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME REPORT
Crystal Palace clambered off the foot of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stoke City at Selhurst Park. After a dismal first half in which neither side had a shot of note, Palace took the lead early in the second period, Jason Puncheon working the ball onto his left foot inside the Stoke penalty area before squeezing it into the bottom corner of the net. The visitors barely looked like getting back on level terms, despite the introduction of new signing John Guidetti, and indeed they had goalkeeper Jack Butland to thank for not falling further behind. The England international made an amazing triple save to deny Joel Ward and then Jason Puncheon twice, before the latter had a low effort smothered in the dying moments. Tony Pulis and Palace move onto 20 points but the Potters are now deeply embroiled in the relegation scrap.
90' FULL-TIME WHISTLE
And that's it! Crystal Palace beat Stoke City by a goal to nil at Selhurst Park.
90' PUNCHEON DENIED
And again! Mile Jedinak puts a low cross into the area, Aaron Wilbraham lets it run, but Jason Puncheon's eventual shot is smothered by Jack Butland.
90' WILBRAHAM WIDE
Palace could have finished it off. They counter attack through Jonathan Parr and have a two on one as he pulls the ball back for Aaron Wilbraham but his weak strike is off target.
90' FOUR ADDED MINUTES
We're into four minutes of stoppage time as Stoke keep the pressure on Palace. Geoff Cameron completely wastes possession though, driving the ball straight into the arms of Julian Speroni from the halfway line.
90' ARNAUTOVIC STRIKE
That sums up Stoke's day. Marko Arnautovic hits a shot on the half-volley from the edge of the area, but it comes off the backside of Peter Crouch and rolls into the arms of Julian Speroni.
89' AIM FOR CROUCH
Stoke are having to throw everything at Palace now, with Peter Crouch the obvious target. The hosts have dealt really well with the big striker so far, though, with Damien Delaney and Danny Gabbidon keeping him very quiet.
87' DOUBLE PALACE SUB
Tony Pulis feels the time is right for a double change. Yannick Bolasie comes off for Dean Moxey and Aaron Wilbraham is on in place of Marouane Chamakh. Can Palace see this one out?
86' BUTLAND BRILLIANCE
Wow! What a triple save by Jack Butland! First he denies Joel Ward at full stretch before blocking two more shots from Jason Puncheon. He's kept his side in the hunt, here.
84' NZONZI BOOKED
Steven Nzonzi now sees yellow after his sliding tackle sends Yannick Bolasie flying on the right touchline. Frustration is setting in for Stoke, who have been poor today.
84' ARNAUTOVIC BOOKED
Marko Arnautovic is the first name in Lee Mason's book, as he puts in a nasty late challenge on Adrian Mariappa. That was naughty from the winger, who does have an aggressive streak. It's not going to help his side if he gets sent off, though.
82' NZONZI OVER
Steven Nzonzi isn't a regular on the Stoke scoresheet and that proves why. He picks up the ball 35 yards out and insists on slamming the ball towards goal, but it ends up in row Z. The visitors are running out of time.
81' GUIDETTI FOR WALTERS
Stoke City's final change sees Jonathan Walters removed in favour of John Guidetti. The young Swedish striker hasn't played any football since April 2012, so it's a big risk from Mark Hughes. Desperate times call for desperate measures, though.
79' CHAMAKH UNHAPPY
There's a lull to proceedings at the moment, as Palace aim to shut up shop.. Marouane Chamakh is furious with referee Lee Mason as he's denied a free-kick after a Geoff Cameron tackle. There wasn't much in it, though.
76' PALACE SCRAMBLE
How did Stoke survive there? Ryan Shawcross throws himself in front of Yannick Bolasie on the edge of the six yard box, and the ball won't quite fall for Stuart O'Keefe as Stoke scramble clear. At the other end, Peter Crouch tries to bend a long-range effort into the corner of the net but the ball doesn't come back enough and drops wide.
74' ARNAUTOVIC FOR ASSAIDI
Stoke make their second substitution, bringing on Marko Arnautovic for Oussama Assaidi. Assaidi has been dangerous today but Arnautovic brings pace and directness to this Stoke team - something they desperately require.
72' TACKLES FLYING IN
Tackles are flying in all over the pitch now as the match enters the final 20 minutes. There hasn't been a huge amount of quality on show today, but you can't fault either team for their full-blooded efforts.
70' ABSORBING PRESSURE
Stoke have looked more dangerous since bringing on Stephen Ireland, but so far Palace are sitting deep and absorbing pressure. Peter Crouch knocks down a long diagonal pass into the Eagles area, but there's too much on it for Charlie Adam and Julian Speroni gathers.
68' O'KEEFE FOR GUEDIOURA
Just after Stephen Ireland volleys wide from an impossible angle, Crystal Palace are being forced into a change, with Adlene Guedioura struggling. He's going to be replaced by Stuart O'Keefe in the Eagles midfield as they look to continue to stifle Stoke.
67' CLOSE SHAVE
Julian Speroni is lucky to get away with that. He finds himself outside his own penalty area as Jonathan Walters bears down on him, meaning he has to head the ball into touch. A close shave.
63' ADAM CLOSE
That was a mazy run through the middle of the pitch from Jason Puncheon as he evades four Stoke players. He tried to work the ball onto his left foot for a shot but was crowded out. At the other end, Charlie Adam hits a rasping effort towards goal from range but it whistles narrowly wide.
61' WALTERS OVER
Jonathan Walters will think he should have done better there. Oussama Assaidi's high, hanging cross finds the forward at the far post, and he holds off his man to get his head onto the ball. It ends up going high over Julian Speroni's bar, though.
58' IRELAND FOR WHELAN
Stoke City are going to make their first change, with Stephen Ireland coming on for Glenn Whelan. It's a midfielder for a midfielder, but Ireland is certainly a more creative, wily operator.
56' CURIOUS DEFENDING
Selhurst Park is bouncing now, and Stoke heads have definitely dropped since conceding that goal. It was Palace's first shot on target, and Mark Hughes will be furious about how Jason Puncheon was barely challenged before rolling the ball in.
53' PUNCHEON SCORES
Where did that come from?! Yannick Bolasie slides Adrian Mariappa in down the right-hand side, but the full-back gets dispossessed. Jason Puncheon wins the ball back in the penalty area and he makes the space on his left before squeezing the ball past Jack Butland and into the far corner of the net.
51' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Jason Puncheon scores!
51' BOLASIE SPEED
Palace have started the second period as they played in the first - plenty of blood and thunder but very little in the way of a cutting edge. Yannick Bolasie uses his pace to trouble Erik Pieters but Marc Wilson is on the cover to boot the ball into the stands.
47' ADAM CLOSE
After a dismal first half in which there was barely a shot of any real accuracy, Stoke nearly take the lead early in the second. A Peter Crouch knockdown finds Charlie Adam on the edge of the box but the midfielder pulls his right-footed strike just wide.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
The teams are back out on the pitch and we are off again at Selhurst Park. Can Crystal Palace or Stoke City find a goal in this second half?
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE
The Crystal Palace and Stoke City club shops will not be inundated with requests for the DVD of the first half of this game, with the two sides having laboured through a tedious first half. There's been only one shot on target of note, with Stoke's Marc Wilson forcing Julian Speroni into tipping his header wide of the post. And while Joel Ward glanced a header wide for the hosts, a cutting edge has been distinctly lacking for Tony Pulis' men. Oussama Assaidi has occasionally shown glimpses of ability for the visitors, but both dressing rooms will be keen to perform better in the second half in order to gain a key win in the battle against relegation.
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE
And that's half-time at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace and Stoke City remain well and truly deadlocked at 0-0.
44' CHAMAKH INEFFECTIVE
Marouane Chamakh has had minimal influence on the first half, with Palace's attacks getting increasingly laboured. Tony Pulis must be tempted to throw someone on to partner the Moroccan.
40' WALTERS HEADER
Mile Jedinak latches onto the ball in the centre circle and bends a through ball between Stoke defenders towards Marouane Chamakh. Ryan Shawcross intercepts, though. Just after, Jonathan Walters gets his head on a Charlie Adam cross but can't generate enough power to test Julian Speroni.
37' ASSAIDI DELIVERY
It wouldn't surprise me if Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes were considering changes at the break. Both sides have lacked a cutting edge, but Stoke nearly find it. Oussama Assaidi gets a delightful cross into the 'corridor of uncertainty' but Jonathan Walters doesn't react quickly enough to get on the end of it.
33' LAYING SIEGE
Crystal Palace are laying siege to the Stoke penalty area at the minute, flinging cross after cross high towards Marouane Chamakh and his fellow attackers. The deliveries aren't anywhere near accurate or dangerous enough to worry the experienced Stoke defence, though, and we're still goalless.
30' STOKE POSSESSION
Stoke are trying to get a stranglehold on the game by keeping possession in the middle of the pitch. Palace aren't too keen to close them down but the Potters lack the incisiveness to create an opportunity anyway, and the hosts soon win the ball back.
26' MIDFIELD BATTLE
The match is continuing to have a combative feel to it, with every outfield player squeezed in the middle third of the Selhurst Park pitch. You have to feel that whoever ends up controlling the midfield today is likely to come out on top.
24' PIETERS VOLLEY
That was close. Erik Pieters gets forward from left back for Stoke and nips past Adrian Mariappa on the edge of the Palace area, before volleying at goal. Unfortunately for the visitors, he cuts across his effort and the ball goes wide at the near post.
22' NOT PRETTY
There's plenty of effort and endeavour from both Palace and Stoke but that isn't making this game any prettier to the eye. There's a lack of quality on show, meaning the most likely way the deadlock is going to be broken is through a set piece.
19' SET PIECES APLENTY
Erik Pieters shoves Marouane Chamakh, meaning Jason Puncheon can deliver another dangerous cross into the Stoke penalty area. Mile Jedinak attacks the ball but Ryan Shawcross glances it away for a corner kick. There's been plenty of set pieces for the hosts so far but they've come to nothing.
16' WILSON HEADER
There's a coming together between Joel Ward and Peter Crouch midway into the Palace half, giving Stoke a free-kick. Marc Wilson wins a header from the set piece but Julian Speroni dives to his right to tip the ball wide.
14' GABBIDON STRIKE
Crystal Palace have edged the first ten minutes and are being roared on by a vociferous home support. Chances are at a premium, though, and Danny Gabbidon's long-range effort from 35 yards sums up the creativity on show so far.
11' JEDINAK LATE
Mile Jedinak clatters into Charlie Adam on the halfway line, sending the midfielder crashing to the turf. Lee Mason has a quiet word with the Australian, opting not to dip into his pocket this early on.
8' STOKE ATTACK
Oussama Assaidi puts in a low cross from the Stoke left and Jonathan Walters is allowed to control the ball near the penalty spot. Danny Gabbidon gets tight to the forward though, meaning the Irish international can't get a shot away. Just after, Danny Gabbidon pokes the ball over his own bar whilst defending a threatening delivery.
6' WARD HEADER
It's been a relatively sloppy start at Selhurst Park but it's Palace who go close first. Yannick Bolasie twists and turns down the left before crossing into the box. Joel Ward advances forward to meet the ball but glances his header wide of the far post.
3' PALACE START WELL
Crystal Palace have started on the front foot and a Steven Nzonzi foul on Marouane Chamakh inside the final third gives them a chance to threaten. Jason Puncheon whips in the free-kick from the right but it's easily cleared.
1' WE'RE OFF
Referee Lee Mason, a late replacement for Mark Clattenburg, blows his whistle to get the match underway. Crystal Palace are in blue and red shirts, with Stoke City in their black change kit. Can Tony Pulis come back to haunt his former employers and help lift Palace off the foot of the Premier League?
0' STAY TUNED
Stay tuned for full text commentary from today's Premier League match at Selhurst Park. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date with all the action from kick-off, which comes at 3pm.
0' REF WATCH
Referee Mark Clattenburg is the man in the middle for today's Premier League fixture. The 38-year-old has taken charge of 15 top flight games this season, handing out 48 yellow cards and just one red. Four of those matches have involved either Crystal Palace or Stoke City, with the clubs picking up just one point from a possible 12 combined. Clattenburg will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Ian Hussin, with James Linington taking on the role of fourth official.
0' HUGHES WARY OF PULIS FACTOR
Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said: ""We probably have a unique insight into how Tony sets up his team given he was here so long and working with our players every day. So I would say that, given the personnel here, there will be a better understanding of the opposition and so it is an advantage. But he will have an insight into what we are doing too because he will know the individuals involved and their strengths and weaknesses, so it will be an interesting battle of wills."
0' PULIS FOCUSED ON PALACE
Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis said: "I've got wonderful memories of that club, and one of the things that will always stick with me is the people. I have great friends there. The team I will face, 95 per cent of them are still there from my time. They were very good. The majority of those players saw the club get to a cup final and into Europe and have established the club. Yes, I had a wonderful 10 years at Stoke, but that was then. My thoughts are now about keeping Palace up and giving them the best chance possible to stay in the Premier League."
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
In recent years, Stoke City have had the better of fixtures between themsekves and Crystal Palace. The Potters haven't lost any of the last seven home or away matches between the two, most recently coming from behind to win 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium back in August, with Ryan Shawcross getting the deciding goal. However, going further back, Stoke went 26 years - or 13 matches - without beating Palace home or away, eventually ending that hoodoo in 2006.
0' STOKE CITY TEAM NEWS
Mark Hughes continues to be without his number one stopper Asmir Begovic, who has a broken finger, with Jack Butland expected to deputise. Defensive duo Robert Huth and Andy Wilkinson are also missing with respective knee and foot injuries, so Marc Wilson and Geoff Cameron will keep their places in the back four. Striker John Guidetti signed on loan from Manchester City in midweek and could make his debut for the Potters, though Peter Crouch would have to be dropped to the bench. Oussama Assaidi is available again for Stoke after being ineligible for the Liverpool match at the Britannia Stadium last week.
0' CRYSTAL PALACE TEAM NEWS
Crystal Palace are sweating on the availability of winger Yannick Bolasie, who faces a late fitness test on a groin injury. If he fails to prove his health, wide man Jerome Thomas may be hoping for a starting XI berth as he returns from a similar problem. Midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi remains out with the South African struggling with a calf injury, while Jack Hunt and Glenn Murray will also have to watch on from the sidelines. Striker Cameron Jerome is unavailable for selection due to being on a season-long loan from today's opponents, Stoke City.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Tony Pulis will be hoping to lift his Crystal Palace side off the foot of the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon when former employers Stoke City head to Selhurst Park. The 56-year-old left the Britannia Stadium in the summer after seven years at the helm, but now his sole focus is on keeping Palace - who prop up the league on 17 points from 21 games - in the top division. Despite being in 12th place, though, Mark Hughes' Stoke are only five points above the Eagles in what appears to be an unprecedented 11-team relegation battle. But the out-of-form Potters will be focused on picking up just their second victory on the road this season, which could lift them back into the top half of the table.
