West Bromwich Albion vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' HONOURS EVEN AT THE HAWTHORNS
New West Brom head coach Pepe Mel will have been delighted with his side's second-half response as they fought back to hold Everton to a 1-1 draw in the Monday night football. Kevin Mirallas gave Roberto Martinez's side the lead but Diego Lugano's first Premier League goal handed Mel his first point. After 40 uneventful first-half minutes Champions League-chasing Everton broke the deadlock thanks to fine combination play from their Belgian forward line. Romelu Lukaku won an important header against Jonas Olsson to send his team-mate Mirallas through on goal. The striker raced away from Lugano before slipping the ball beyond Ben Foster for his fourth Premier League goal of the season. The Baggies came out a different side for the second 45 minutes and with 15 minutes remaining they grabbed the equaliser. James Morrison dug out a wonderful cross from the right into the near post where Uruguay defender Lugano was waiting to bury his header into the roof of the net past Tim Howard. The hosts move up a place to 13th position while the Merseysiders stay in sixth on 42 points - missing the chance to go into to top four.
90' FULL-TIME
It's honours even at The Hawthorns as West Brom fight back to hold high flying Everton to a 1-1 draw in the Monday night football.
90' NO GOAL
Leighton Baines' delivery from the left is struck towards goal by Gareth Barry and although Sylvain Distin sticks the ball in the net, the flag is up on the far side.
90' MIRALLAS CARDED
Kevin Mirallas is booked by referee Michael Oliver for showing his frustration.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
We're into the FOUR added minutes of stoppage time at The Hawthorns and the game is really stretched.
90' POOR ATTEMPT
Kevin Mirallas bumps into Claudio Yacob for a free-kick about 25 yards from goal in a central position. This is a good opportunity for West Brom but Steven Reid's curler is easily held by Tim Howard.
88' FINAL EVERTON CHANGE
Aiden McGeady seeks out Romelu Lukaku but just over cooks the pass through the middle. Steven Naismith comes on for the injured Leon Osman for the final few minutes.
86' OSMAN APPEAL
West Brom lost their first two home matches of the season, but have lost just twice at home in the eight matches since, winning three and drawing three. They are the draw specialists and will be happy with a share of the spoils if it ends like this tonight. Leon Osman goes over in the box, but referee Michael Oliver waves play on.
83' GOOD STRENGTH
Aiden McGeady is immediately involved for the visitors who keep possession in West Brom's half of the field. Diego Lugano shows good strength to brush Kevin Mirallas off the ball and it's a goal kick to the home side.
81' BAGGIES PRESSURE
Albion have suddenly got their tails up and just before the changes, Chris Brunt's delicious cross almost picked out Saido Berahino. Pepe Mel will be delighted with his side's response here after scoring that equaliser.
79' McGEADY DEBUT
Aiden McGeady takes the place of Bryan Oviedo after joining the club from Spartak Moscow.
78' EVERTON CHANGE
Youngster John Stones replaces the injured Seamus Coleman for the visitors.
77' FINAL ALBION CHANGE
Striker Saido Berahino comes on for Nicolas Anelka straight after the goal which new head coach Pepe Mel celebrated in style.
75' LUGANO LEVELS FOR ALBION
James Morrison digs out a wonderful cross from the right into the near post where defender Diego Lugano, who stayed up after a Baggies corner, was waiting and the Uruguay international buries his header into the roof of the net past Tim Howard. Game on!
75' GOOOAAALLL!!!
DIEGO LUGANO
72' AMBITIOUS FREE-KICK
Kevin Mirallas earns his side a free-kick on the right edge of the area and the striker goes for goal himself. It was not too far away, but Ben Foster had his angles covered.
70' HARD-WORKING VICTOR
Victor Anichebe tries to win the corner with no support at all but his ball travels along the byline before being gathered by Tim Howard.
68' BAINES MISCONTROL
Chris Brunt's superb delivery is unable to find anybody in the Everton box. That gets the West Brom supporters riled behind the goal. Leighton Baines miscontrols the ball and then brings down Nicolas Anelka. He somehow gets away from being booked.
66' FIRED OVER
Victor Anichebe knocks the ball down to James Morrison who lashes his effort from the edge of the area well over the crossbar.
65' MORE ALBION WIDTH
Since failing to score in their first three Premier League matches of the season West Brom has been shut out only four times in the last 18 top flight contests. They're trying to get more width and looks to get the ball into the box for Victor Anichebe and Nicolas Anelka.
63' SPECTACULAR ATTEMPT
Seamus Coleman feeds the ball to the edge of the area where Kevin Mirallas is waiting, but his spectacular attempted volley is fired into the ground before bouncing wide of the mark.
61' MULUMBU COMES ON
Youssouf Mulumbu makes his West Brom entrance, coming on for Zoltan Gera.
60' ALBION THROW
West Brom head coach Pepe Mel is ready to bring on Youssouf Mulumbu as Liam Ridgewell prepares to take a throw deep in his own half.
58' OLD FASHIONED TACKLE
Kevin Mirallas and Steven Reid go in for a good old fashioned challenge together, but referee Michael Oliver is unhappy and penalises the Belgian.
57' RIDGEWELL CARDED
West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell picks up a yellow card for crashing into Seamus Coleman.
55' ANICHEBE COMES CLOSE
Leighton Baines' deflected cross is well held by Ben Foster. His quick throw has Albion counter-attacking and Nicolas Anelka picks out substitute Victor Anichebe at the near post, but he fails to get enough contact on the ball to send it past Tim Howard.
53' BARRY BOOKED
Gareth Barry is shown a yellow card by referee Michael Oliver for shoulder charging Nicolas Anelka down to the ground. The midfielder is the first Everton player to go into the book tonight.
51' DANGEROUS DELIVERY
James Morrison's first-time effort is weak and Tim Howard is quickly down to make the save. At the other end, Seamus Coleman's dangerous delivery from the right evades everybody inside the box.
49' CHANGE OF MIND
Kevin Mirallas catches James Morrison and Albion get ready to launch the ball long into the Everton box from halfway. Instead, Jonas Olsson decides to go backwards and the hosts look to build from the back again.
47' ALBION SUBSTUTUTION
Former Everton player Victor Anichebe has come on for Matej Vydra for the start of the second-half. Can he make the difference?
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
West Brom have just one win in their last 11 Premier League matches, a 1-0 victory over Newcastle on New Year's Day. They've drawn five times and lost five times in that run. Although they are looking for back-to-back home wins for the first time this season, it's a hard task with Everton in front.
45' EVERTON LEAD AT THE BREAK
It hasn't been the best of starts to life at The Hawthorns for new West Brom head coach Pepe Mel because Champions League chasing Everton lead 1-0 at the break. After 40 uneventful first-half minutes, Roberto Martinez's men broke the deadlock thanks to fine combination play from his Belgian forward line. Romelu Lukaku won an important header against Jonas Olsson to send his team-mate Kevin Mirallas through on goal. The striker raced away from Diego Lugano before slipping the ball beyond Ben Foster for his fourth Premier League goal of the season. The Toffees have lost just twice all season, so Albion face a tough task turning this around in the second 45 minutes.
45' HALF-TIME
Everton are leading West Brom 1-0 at The Hawthorns thanks to a goal from Kevin Mirallas.
45' ADDED TIME
We're into TWO added minutes of stoppage time at the end of this half and Zoltan Gera finds himself in space in the area but is crowded out.
45' MORRISON BOOKED
James Morrison picked up a booking from referee Michael Oliver for an off the ball incident. Meanwhile, the visitors pile forward looking to double their lead.
41' MIRALLAS ON TARGET
Kevin Mirallas breaks the deadlock at The Hawthorns with a neat finish. Romelu Lukaku wins the header against Jonas Olsson to send his Belgium team-mate through on goal. He gets away from Diego Lugano before slipping the ball beyond Ben Foster for his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
41' GOOOAAALLL!!!
KEVIN MIRALLAS
40' CREATIVE PLAY
Zoltan Gera comes close to sending the ball straight through the heart of the Everton defence and then Matej Vydra makes a darting run into the area, but he has to check back because he has nobody to hit in the middle.
38' ALBION PRESSURE
The free-kick comes to nothing and the hosts counter-attack in numbers. They keep Everton penned in their own area as Nicolas Anelka tries to create an opening for Matej Vydra but Tim Howard clears things up by hammering the ball downfield.
36' YACOB BOOKED
Claudio Yacob is booked by referee Michael Oliver for catching Gareth Barry in the middle of the park. That's his fifth yellow card of the season.
34' LIVELY FRONT PAIRING
New West Brom head coach Pepe Mel seems happy enough with his front two, who have looked lively so far tonight. Liam Ridgewell is caught by Bryan Oviedo for an Albion free-kick deep in their own half but they hand possession straight back to the opposition and this time Diego Lugano goes straight into the back of Romelu Lukaku.
31' GERA COMES CLOSE
First real chance for West Brom and Nicolas Anelka is the instigator behind the move once again as he finds Zoltan Gera ahead of him but the Hungarian's drive towards goal is straight down the throat of Tim Howard.
29' COLEMAN CHANCE
Romelu Lukaku nudges Jonas Olsson in the back for a free-kick and that gets a few loud cheers from the Baggies supporters behind the goal. Gareth Barry's long-range shot is blocked and then Seamus Coleman's goalbound effort is cleared away by Chris Brunt.
27' EVERTON DOMINANCE
Bryan Oviedo looks for a quick one-two with Gareth Barry before the midfielder overhits his pass and it's a goal kick to Albion. The Merseysiders are starting to dominate possession in this game while Albion are sitting deeper and deeper.
25' SUPERB DEFENSIVE HEADER
Phil Jagielka gets up a little too early but still manages to direct his header back to Tim Howard. Matej Vydra was lurking just behind and was looking to pick up the pieces had the Everton defender made any sort of mistake.
23' ANELKA UP FOR FIGHT
Nicolas Anelka looks like a man who is up for the fight tonight. He sticks in a diagonal ball to the back stick but Everton manage to clear their lines. Claudio Yacob pulls the shirt of Bryan Oviedo for a free-kick to the men from Merseyside. However, they don't make the most of it.
20' MIRALLAS GOES FOR GOAL
Everton's 10 goals conceded away from home are the fewest of any Premier League side this season so Albion are up against it with this tough looking Toffees side looking to keep another shut out. Kevin Mirallas drives his right-foot curler towards goal, but once again Ben Foster keep his eye on the ball.
17' FIRM HALF VOLLEY
Uruguay defender Diego Lugano goes in late into striker Romelu Lukaku and Everton take the free-kick short. Kevin Mirallas finds Bryan Oviedo on the edge of the box and his half volley is well caught by an alert Ben Foster.
15' ANELKA GOES FOR GOAL
Nicolas Anelka finds space down the left before cutting inside Gareth Barry and lashing his right-foot piledriver over Tim Howard's crossbar. An ambitious effort from the Frenchman!
13' JUST WIDE
Bryan Oviedo turns really well inside the area before attempting to reverse his right-foot effort into the near post past Ben Foster. It's an open start to this clash!
11' AT FULL STRETCH
Toffees' shot-stopper Tim Howard is at full stretch to palm away Matej Vydra's drive which was travelling across the face of goal.
8' EARLY CHANCE FOR EVERTON
Romelu Lukaku catches Ben Foster off his line, but his chip is just wide of the mark. An early Everton chance goes begging!
4' SYSTEMS AS EXPECTED
West Brom boss Pepe Mel has set up with a 4-4-2 system with Nicolas Anelka and Matej Vydra up front. Toffees' head coach Roberto Martinez has set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Everton have won four of their last six matches against the Baggies in all competitions, losing once and drawing once, so they will be confident of picking up all three points and moving into the Champions League spots.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go at The Hawthorns then. The pitch is in decent condition while the weather is touching freezing in the highest football ground in the country. Albion are wearing their traditional white kit while Everton - followed by a large number of supporters - are in their yellow away strip. It ended goalless when West Brom travelled to Goodison Park in August, so let's hope for a few goals tonight.
0' WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Pepe Mel names his first West Brom side for the visit of Everton and the big news is that striker Nicolas Anelka keeps his place in the team after Zoopla announced earlier today they will end their sponsorship of Albion at the end of the season over his "quenelle" gesture. Meanwhile, Diego Lugano, Zoltan Gera, Claudio Yacob and Matej Vydra all come into the starting XI which lost to Southampton last time out. Czech striker Vydra replaces Shane Long who has left for Hull.
0' EVERTON TEAM NEWS
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has made two changes to the side which beat Norwich. Sylvain Distin is back in the side after a three-week lay-off with a hamstring injury. John Stones drops to the substitutes bench while Bryan Oviedo comes in for the injured Steven Pienaar. Midfielder Ross Barkley is sidelined with a broken toe. Striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored 17 goals for West Brom last season, starts up front.
0' WEST BROM TEAM
Foster, Reid, Lugano, Olsson, Ridgewell, Brunt, Morrison, Yacob, Gera, Vydra, Anelka. SUBSTITUTES: Myhill, Mulumbu, Berahino, Jones, Anichebe, Sessegnon, Amalfitano.
0' EVERTON TEAM
Howard, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Coleman, Barry, McCarthy, Osman, Oviedo, Mirallas, Lukaku. SUBSTITUTES: Robles, Hibbert, Heitinga, McGeady, Naismith, Stones, Vellios.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Pepe Mel's first official game at the West Brom helm is against in-form Everton at The Hawthorns this Monday night. The Spaniard watched last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Southampton from the stands as his assistants in Keith Downing and Dean Kiely took charge on a caretaker basis for the final time. He was appointed as successor to the sacked Steve Clarke last week, with the 50-year-old - himself axed in early December after four seasons with Real Betis - handed an 18-month contract. With Albion out of both the FA and League Cups, Mel's sole task for the remainder of this campaign is to keep them in the Premier League, with the club currently 14th and three points above the drop zone. With his English minimal, and with Albion vetoing his wish to appoint fellow Spaniards to his backroom team, Mel appears to face an uphill struggle. He now faces a tough assignment against an Everton side which have lost just once in their last 14 matches. Roberto Martinez's reputation continues to grow and he looks certain to challenge Merseyside rivals Liverpool for a Champions League place. A win tonight would leapfrog them above their neighbours into fourth spot, but this clash could be a tight one to call. Follow me on Twitter: @RazMirza
0' MEL AIMING FOR EUROPE
New West Brom head coach Pepe Mel is convinced the Baggies can challenge for a place in Europe next season despite being warned there are no funds available for this season's relegation battle. Mel will not be allowed to spend a penny of the fee to be gained from striker Shane Long's sale to Hull, which could rise to £7million, and his hands appear firmly tied behind his back. "It (losing Shane Long) is something I was told would be a possibility," said Mel. "But I'm absolutely certain there is enough in the squad, without Long, to stay in the Premier League." Asked as to where he thought he would be with Albion a year from now, a confident Mel pulled no punches as he said: "Fighting for places that give access to the Europa League."
0' EARLY WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Pepe Mel faces a potential striker shortage. Victor Anichebe and Stephane Sessegnon are both doubts with injuries, while Shane Long has left for Hull. Mel is also without two defenders - Billy Jones (eye) and Goran Popov (neck).
0' MARTINEZ HAPPY WITH McGEADY
The departure of Nikica Jelavic has been offset by the arrival of Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow and he will go straight into the Everton squad despite lacking match-fitness after joining the club's warm-weather break in Tenerife this week. "I am delighted with Aiden McGeady, someone who fits in our football club so well," said manager Roberto Martinez. "I never expected him to be working with us in January if I'm honest. For Aiden to be able to spend those 24 hours a day with Everton, getting to know the squad and how we work was very important. He hasn't trained in the last few weeks and hasn't done any group work in the last six weeks so he needed the extra work but it has been perfect. It has been like a mini pre-season for him and now he is ready to go straight into the squad. He is not a player you would expect to have 90 minutes but I do feel he is ready to be part of the squad."
0' EARLY EVERTON TEAM NEWS
Midfielder Ross Barkley is sidelined with a broken toe. Defender Sylvain Distin is back from a hamstring injury after a three-week lay-off but fellow centre-back Antolin Alcaraz is still missing.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is Michael Oliver from Northumberland. In the 14 matches he has taken charge of he has shown 55 yellow cards and two reds. His assistants along the touchline will be Simon Long and Stephen Child while Roger East will act as fourth official.
