Stoke City vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME REPORT
Stoke City grabbed their first ever Premier League win over Manchester United with a 2-1 victory at the Britannia Stadium. It was the day when everything was supposed to begin to fall into place for United manager David Moyes, with his much-lauded triumvirate of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata all starting. But they failed to gel in the first half and the Potters took full advantage - albeit with a slice of fortune as Charlie Adam's free-kick deflected in off Michael Carrick. United's woes were compounded when they lost both Jonny Evans and Phil Jones to injury, forcing Carrick to slot in at centre back. Van Persie levelled the scores straight away in the second period but it was a matter of minutes before Stoke were back ahead as Adam drove the ball in from the edge of the penalty area. As time wore on, United struggled to put themselves in higher gears. It wasn't until stoppage time, when Asmir Begovic tipped Rooney's free-kick onto the post, that they upped the ante, and Mark Hughes' men hung on for an historic win. It's a vital three points for Stoke in their battle against relegation but, after their eighth defeat of the season, United are in unchartered territory.
90' FULL-TIME WHISTLE
And that's full-time. Stoke City beat Manchester United 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium.
90' TIME RUNNING OUT
It's corner kick after corner kick at the Britannia Stadium but still Stoke City stay strong. David Moyes cuts a frustrated figure in the United dugout.
90' TIRING MATA
United are laying siege to the Stoke goal, but there doesn't look to be a way through the Potters' defence. Patrice Evra gets in down the left side again but Juan Mata is too flat-footed to get onto his pass.
90' OFF THE POST
Geoff Cameron gets booked for time wasting at a throw-in, as Stoke try to play the clock down late on. Meanwhile, Stephen Ireland fouls Javier Hernandez on the edge of the penalty area, giving United a great chance to test Asmir Begovic. As seven minutes of added time are indicated, Rooney takes the free-kick and Begovic tips onto the post, before Tom Cleverley fires over from the rebound.
89' YOUNG HEADER
That was a great opportunity! Chris Smalling swings in a cross from deep and picks out an unmarked Ashley Young at the far post. The winger is in acres of space but chooses to head at goal straight away, the ball coming off his head like it was a fifty pence piece and going out for a goal kick past the far post.
87' HERNANDEZ PULL-BACK
Where were the United players?! Javier Hernandez swaps passes with Rafael down the right before pulling the ball back towards the penalty spot. No United attackers are there to shoot at goal, though. Just after, Juan Mata finds Wayne Rooney inside the area, but Erik Pieters' last-ditch challenge does enough.
84' PALACIOS FOR WHELAN
Stoke City bring on a fresh face, with Wilson Palacios coming on to add some energy to midfield. Glenn Whelan makes way for the Honduran.
83' CARRICK BOOKED
The game is very stretched now and it looks like there could well be another goal in this game - it's just a case of which way it goes. Michael Carrick goes into the book for a late challenge on Peter Odemwingie.
81' MATA EFFORT
Some smart interchange on the edge of the Stoke box creates an opening for Juan Mata, but his low strike deflects wide off a Potters defender. The delivery from the corner kick is once again very poor.
79' HERNANDEZ FOR VAN PERSIE
Manchester United are ready to make their final change, with Javier Hernandez entering the fray. The Mexican forward scored the winner in this fixture last season, so David Moyes will be hoping he can have a similar effect today. Robin van Persie comes off to make room in the United attack.
79' ASSAIDI VOLLEY
That was spectacular! Manchester United head a Stoke throw-in away but only to the edge of the area. Oussama Assaidi is there, and he sends a vicious volley towards the top corner, with David De Gea having to tip the ball over the top.
77' ASSAIDI BREAK
United are running out of time to find an equaliser and they still don't look like scoring, particularly. Stoke, on the other hand, nearly put themselves out of sight when Oussama Assaidi breaks upfield but Chris Smalling gets a last-ditch block in to deny the Moroccan.
73' WELBECK ANONYMOUS
Danny Welbeck has been largely anonymous since coming on at half-time and he spurns a half-chance when Juan Mata pokes the ball to him in the penalty area. Ryan Shawcross comes in to clear away. Meanwhile, Stoke withdraw Marko Arnautovic, with Oussama Assaidi coming on.
69' RAFAEL DENIED
Wayne Rooney slides Rafael in down the right, but the right-back's pull-back from the byline is blocked by Asmir Begovic. Stoke don't look too threatened at the moment.
66' ADAM V RAFAEL
There's a flashpoint here as Rafael takes exception to a challenge from Charlie Adam by the right touchline. Words are exchanged but the situation is defused by Neil Swarbrick before it escalates into anything physical.
64' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
How did that not go in?! Patrice Evra gets in behind Geoff Cameron at right-back for Stoke and goes down under pressure. United want a penalty but Evra reacts to pull the ball back for Juan Mata. He tries to lay it off for Danny Welbeck but Ryan Shawcross puts in a solid block on the edge of the six-yard area. Meanwhile at the other end, Marko Arnautovic bends a shot just wide.
62' CROUCH CHANCE
That was a chance for Stoke! Stephen Ireland smashes a volley at goal from 25 yards out and the ball ricochets to Peter Crouch in the penalty area. He spins on the ball and shoots but David De Gea gets down to save.
61' IRELAND FOR WALTERS
Jonathan Walters has dropped his backside to the floor again and it looks like Stoke are going to have to make a change. The forward, who has a nasty gash on his left leg, is replaced by Stephen Ireland for the Potters.
59' WALTERS BOOKED
When Jonathan Walters finally gets to his feet, there's an unwelcome surprise - a yellow card from referee Neil Swarbrick. That might be a bit harsh, with Walters seemingly having slipped there.
57' WALTERS DOWN
That looked nasty. Jonathan Walters slips into a clumsy tackle on Chris Smalling inside the United penalty area. The Irish international comes off worse and requires treatment from the medics, who are very busy today.
55' ROONEY BOOKED
Wayne Rooney becomes the first player to go into the book this afternoon, as he trips Marko Arnautovic. He doesn't have too many complaints - that was a foul which came about as a result of frustration, you would think.
53' ADAM SCORES
That's some strike! A long, diagonal ball into the Manchester United penalty area is knocked back down towards the edge of the box. Charlie Adam strikes it viciously first time with his left foot, the ball arrowing into the top left-hand corner of David De Gea's goal. Stoke are back ahead!
52' GOOOAAALLL!!!
What a goal! Charlie Adam scores!
51' CLEVERLEY KNOCK
It's all Manchester United at the start of the second half as they maintain pressure on the Stoke penalty area. There's another injury worry here, though, as Tom Cleverley's head comes into contact with the boot of Charlie Adam. It's not deliberate and, fortunately, the knock doesn't look too serious.
48' VAN PERSIE SCORES
That didn't take long! Manchester United are back on level terms, as Juan Mata lofts the ball into the path of Robin van Persie inside the Stoke penalty area. Composed as ever, the Dutchman opens his body and caresses the ball into the top corner. Game on.
47' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Robin van Persie equalises!
46' BACK UNDERWAY
The teams are back out on the pitch and we're back underway at the Britannia Stadium. Can Manchester United turn this one around, despite their makeshift defence, or will Stoke City collect what will be a warmly-welcomed victory?
45' HALF-TIME REPORT
Stoke City take a lead into the interval against Manchester United, after a half in which David Moyes will feel his side received none of the luck on offer. Charlie Adam was happy to take the credit for the Potters' goal, though his free-kick from 40 yards out took a huge deflection off the outstretched leg of Michael Carrick. United also lost both Jonny Evans and Phil Jones to injury, which has forced Carrick to slot into an unfamiliar defensive role alongside Chris Smalling. Having said that, United had the best chance of the game in the early stages, as Wayne Rooney blasted wide recklessly from ten yards with a first-time strike. Mark Hughes has been exasperated throughout but will be more than happy at his team's chances of picking up their first ever Premier League win over the Red Devils.
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE
And that's half-time at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke City lead Manchester United by a goal to nil.
45' DODGY BACKPASS
Ashley Young nearly makes an almighty error as he tries a backpass to David De Gea. The ball holds up in the wind, almost allowing Jonathan Walters to run in on it. Eventually, Chris Smalling reacts to slide in and clear the ball to touch. United need half-time to regroup.
45' SIX ADDED MINUTES
Due to that delay, we're going to have six minutes of added time at the end of the first half. Stoke begin injury time with a corner kick as Patrice Evra heads behind his own goal under pressure from Peter Odemwingie. Charlie Adam whips it in but David De Gea gathers.
45' STRETCHERED OFF
Medical teams from both Manchester United and Stoke City are still attending to Phil Jones on the pitch. Of course, his well-being is the most important thing in this situation. Eventually, he's carried off the pitch as the Britannia Stadium applauds him off.
43' WELBECK FOR JONES
There's some concern for Phil Jones after he falls awkwardly after a clash with Jonathan Walters on the halfway line. The England international looks in some pain, and the stretcher is on the pitch at the Britannia. United have lost Jonny Evans already today, so another defensive injury is not what they need. Danny Welbeck comes on for him, so it looks like Michael Carrick will fill in at centre back.
40' CLEVERLEY SHOOTS
United nearly respond straight away as Tom Cleverley drives a low shot at goal from 20 yards out, but Asmir Begovic dives to his right to parry the ball away. That goal came against the run of play and the visitors will be keen to get back on level terms as soon as possible.
39' ADAM SCORES
Stoke are ahead and they have a huge stroke of luck to thank. Charlie Adam blasts a free-kick at goal from 40 yards out and the ball deflects off Michael Carrick, leaving David De Gea stranded on the wrong side of the goal. The ball bounces in and Stoke lead.
38' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's in! Stoke City lead through Charlie Adam!
38' POOR SET PIECES
Juan Mata wriggles away from Peter Odemwingie on the left side of the Stoke penalty area, winning a free-kick as the Nigerian trips him needlessly. Wayne Rooney delivers a flat cross but doesn't get the ball past the first defender. Set piece delivery has been poor from United.
36' EVRA LURKING
Juan Mata gets a chance to make up for his previous poor free-kick delivery from the right-hand side, as Tom Cleverley is felled. His cross is better this time, and nearly finds Patrice Evra at the far post, but Jonathan Walters glances the ball away from him.
33' DE GEA UNTESTED
Stoke City are yet to test David De Gea in the Manchester United goal and it's the visitors who certainly look the most likely to find a breakthrough. The Potters are concentrating on finding Peter Crouch with long balls but the wind is making that strategy difficult.
29' VAN PERSIE CHANCE
That's a great chance! Phil Jones heads an Ashley Young corner kick back across goal, where Robin van Persie is stood on the corner of the six-yard box. He heads at goal but the ball takes a slight deflection off Glenn Whelan, which sends it over the top. A vital intervention.
26' MATA WASTE
Rafael wins a free-kick on the right-hand side of the Stoke penalty are after being tripped by Marko Arnautovic. It's the perfect position for Juan Mata to deliver an inswinging delivery but he puts the ball straight into the arms of Asmir Begovic.
25' JONES INTERVENES
What an intervention by Phil Jones! Peter Odemwingie lays the ball off for Jonathan Walters on the edge of the Manchester United area, and the forward is about to lash at goal. Jones is quickly on the scene though, poking the ball away from his right boot.
23' HUGHES FURY
Mark Hughes is absolutely livid in the Stoke technical area as a number of decisions go against his side in a short period of time. Patrice Evra appears to climb all over Jonathan Walters' back to win a header, but referee Neil Swarbrick gives the free-kick the other way. The Britannia Stadium crowd are letting the officials know what they think.
20' UP FOR THE FIGHT
There's an almighty scramble in the Stoke City defensive third, with players from both sides hauling themselves into 50/50 challenges in an attempt to regain control of possession. Stoke eventually clear to safety but United certainly aren't shying out of the tackles today.
17' ARNAUTOVIC BLAZES
That's poor from Marko Arnautovic. Stoke launch a counter attack and the Austrian pulls off Rafael to receive the ball centrally, 25 yards from the Manchester United goal. Arnautovic decides to pull the trigger, but gets under the ball and his effort is blazed miles over the bar.
16' ROONEY MISS
What a chance! Patrice Evra fizzes in a low cross towards the near post, picking out an unmarked Wayne Rooney. He lashes at the ball first time, but somehow misses the target at the near post. That is such a let-off for Stoke City. Moments earlier, United could have had a penalty after Marc Wilson manhandled Robin van Persie in the area.
13' ODEMWINGIE HEADER
Charlie Adam drives a low corner kick into the near post for Stoke City, and Peter Odemwingie manages to get his head to the ball. He should do better with his effort as the ball seems to just hit his head before bouncing out for a goal kick at the near post.
11' RAFAEL FOR EVANS
Manchester United are being forced into an early substitution, with Jonny Evans struggling with a niggle. Stoke nearly take advantage of that as Evans misses a header, allowing Jonathan Walters to cross for Peter Crouch. The striker can't connect with the ball with his acrobatic effort, though. Just after, Evans goes off, with Rafael coming on in his place.
9' RASH TACKLES
Stoke have been penalised for late tackles on a number of occasions in the opening minutes, with Charlie Adam and Glenn Whelan perhaps lucky to avoid going into Neil Swarbrick's book.
7' MATA STRIKE
Robin van Persie and Juan Mata link up for the first time as the latter heads the ball down for the former. Mata comes inside and takes a shot with his left foot fom 25 yards out, but Erik Pieters throws himself in front of the effort.
5' ROONEY AMBITIOUS
United have managed to survive some very early Stoke pressure and keep possession for a few minutes in their own half, despite pressure from the home side. The front three of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata haven't had much of a sniff yet, with an ambitious Rooney effort from 50 yards out the only half-chance.
2' STOKE OVERLOAD
There's nearly an early chance for Stoke inside a blustery Britannia Stadium as Jonathan Walters almost works an overlap for new signing Peter Odemwingie on the right wing. Chris Smalling reacts to dispossess the Irish international before he can deliver a pass, though.
1' WE'RE OFF
The two teams are out on the pitch at the Britannia Stadium and referee Neil Swarbrick blows his whistle to get the match underway. Stoke City are in their red and white home kit, with Manchester United wearing their blue and black away strip. Can the Potters end their recent woeful run or will United's resurgence continue?
0' STAY TUNED
Stay tuned for full text commentary from today's Premier League fixture. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date with all the action at the Britannia Stadium, with kick-off coming at 3pm.
0' REF WATCH
Referee Neil Swarbrick takes charge of this afternoon's Premier League encounter. The 43-year-old has been in control of 11 top division games this season, handing out 35 bookings. He'll be assisted by Lee Betts and Andrew Halliday, with Michael Oliver taking on the role of the fourth official.
0' HAVE WE MET BEFORE?
Stoke City is now home to two former Manchester United youngsters in Marc Wilson and Ryan Shawcross. Wilson was part of the youth setup at Old Trafford but failed to break into the first team picture as he moved to Portsmouth in 2004 and then to the Potters in 2010. Meanwhile, Shawcross played only twice for United's first team - both as substitutes in the League Cup - before signing for Stoke, initially on loan before a permanent deal was sealed - in 2007.
0' MATA: UNITED WON'T BE INTIMIDATED
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata said: "It has always been difficult to play against Stoke. But if you try to play quickly, you can get chances to score and put yourself in a good position. They like to play long balls and they are a physical team, but we just need to play our own game with the quality players we have. We won't be intimidated."
0' BOWEN: NO FEAR FOR STOKE ON HOME TURF
Stoke City assistant manager Mark Bowen said: "Whenever you play Manchester United it's difficult but with Mata, van Persie and Rooney coming back into the fold we've had a few sleepless nights this week. But that's why we're in the game; Premier League games at home to Manchester United get the juices flowing for everybody. It's a game that we're not looking at with any fear or trepidation – we'll just look to get out there and take the game to them. We feel, and quite rightly so, that we can give anyone a game on our own patch and I'm sure we will do tomorrow against United."
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
Manchester United have a near-perfect record over Stoke City since the Potters returned to the top division in 2008. The two teams have met 12 times in the past five and a half years, with United winning 11 of the fixtures and having to settle for a share of the spoils just once, back in September 2011 when Peter Crouch cancelled out a Nani opener at the Britannia Stadium. United have already won in Staffordshire this season, coming away with a 2-0 win in the Capital One Cup in December, with Ashley Young and Patrice Evra grabbing second half strikes. Stoke's last win over United came back on Boxing Day in 1984, when goals from Ian Painter and Carl Saunders gave them a victory at the Victoria Ground. Ultimately it didn't help Stoke that season, as they finished rock bottom and were relegated to the Second Division.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
David Moyes was boosted by the return of striking duo Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney against Cardiff City in midweek, and the two of them could start in tandem against the Potters. Marouane Fellaini could join them back in the first team picture soon with a recovery from wrist surgery not too far away. Rio Ferdinand may also make the squad after returning from a knee injury but Nani and Michael Carrick definitely miss out.
0' STOKE CITY TEAM NEWS
Stoke City have no fresh injury worries ahead of the visit of Manchester United but central defender Robert Huth is set to miss out again. The German international has a knee injury which has kept him out of action and a return is still several weeks away. However, defender Andy Wilkinson and winger Matthew Etherington are available for selection again, and will stake their claim for a starting XI berth. On-loan striker John Guidetti, who has been vocal about his lack of opportunities at the Britannia Stadium so far, may be handed his first start but new signing Peter Odemwingie may have a say in that, too. Steven N'Zonzi was sent off in midweek, so Mark Hughes must decide whether to replace him with Wilson Palacios or Stephen Ireland.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
A re-energized Manchester United will look to pile more misery on relegation-threatened Stoke City on Saturday afternoon when they make the trip to the Britannia Stadium. Boosted by January signing Juan Mata, the Red Devils saw off Cardiff in midweek as they kept pace with the competition for a top-four finish. Indeed, a win in Staffordshire would see David Moyes' men close the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Liverpool to just three points ahead of the Reds' fixture against West Brom tomorrow. But Mark Hughes and Stoke are unlikely to be rolled over. Despite losing their last four matches in all competitions, the Potters have lost just twice at home in the Premier League all season. A respectable result is a must if they don't want to risk slipping into the relegation zone at the start of a new month.
