Chelsea vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME
Talking of wasting options, Sammy Ameobi has two men free to his left as he breaks into the Chelsea half. He opts to shoot at goal from range though, the ball flying over the bar. It's the last action of the game and the referee blows for full-time!
90' BA LOOKING FOR GOAL
Demba Ba really wants a goal against his old club and fires a high drive from outside the area that flies wide. Slightly hypocritical from Ba there, who had options himself.
90' SCHURRLE WASTES OPPORTUNITY
Demba Ba's uttering some choice words here at Andre Schurrle, after the sub cuts in from the left and has the striker free to his right. Instead though he fires a shot high and wide of goal. Both he and Salah have certainly been enthusiastic since coming on, but have lacked a little composure.
90' NEWCASTLE CORNER
Newcastle have a corner that Sissoko takes from the left and Chelsea manage to clear. They break through Ba. New boy Salah is then scythed down by Sissoko, leading to a deserved yellow card for the Frenchman.
87' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
But he could have it yet! Salah's played in again after Marveaux loses the ball, but the debutant hesitates and again finishes poorly, Krul spreading himself to save. On the counter Newcastle then go incredibly close, the man who gave the ball away, Marveaux, firing wide from close range after Sissoko's cross from the left. He should've bagged that one.
86' SALAH ALMOST IN FOR DEBUT GOAL
This could've been a great moment for Salah. He's played through on the left by fellow sub Schurrle and fires at goal with his left foot. However he mis-hits his shot and it screws wide of the goal. What a debut that could've been.
85' SUBSTITUTIONS MADE
Eden Hazard is given a deserved standing ovation from the home fans as he makes way for Andre Schurrle. Newcastle also make a change; Sylvain Marveaux is on for Vurnon Anita.
83' DE JONG CHANCE
Luuk De Jong manages to create an opportunity for himself, turning his man just outside the penalty area before firing in a low drive with his right foot that's comfortable for Cech to save. It's fair to say that De Jong's not been overly impressive on his debut.
81' NEWCASTLE ATTACK MIS-FIRING
Chelsea are allowing Newcastle to come at them but the visitors aren't making too much of the afforded space. Anita lofts a high ball from inside his half up to no-one in particular, and it roles harmlessly through to Cech.
78' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Mohamed Salah is on for Chelsea to make his debut. He replaces the excellent Willian.
77' AMEOBI FIRES WIDE
Newcastle have been looking for a consolation and they muster their best chance of the half after Yanga-Mbiwa manages to get in behind the Chelsea defence and square it for the arriving Sammy Ameobi, who's left foot shot goes wide. He was under pressure and off balance but should've maybe hit the target from inside the area.
75' CHELSEA CORNER
Chelsea have a corner after Willian breaks into the Newcastle half and has his cross from the right of the area deflected out. Newcastle manage to get it clear but back come the Blues, before Eden Hazard uncharacteristically gives it away. A rare slip from the otherwise superb Belgian.
73' CHELSEA IN CRUISE CONTROL
The fans are roaring but it's all gone quiet on the field of play, with Chelsea comfortable in holding Newcastle at arm's length. Sammy Ameobi tries to trick his way past Ivanovic by the left corner flag, but is unceremoniously shoved off the ball. He wants a free-kick but there's nothing given - he was simply outmuscled.
71' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Substitution for Chelsea. Samuel Eto'o, who was instrumental in the second Chelsea goal, comes off and is replaced by Demba Ba.
70' AMEOBI FOUL
Ivanovic goes down after another clumsy challenge from Sammy Ameobi - already booked, remember. The referee keeps his cards in his pocket however.
67' CHELSEA HEADING TO THE SUMMIT?
Chelsea are sensing a chance to improve their goal difference here and are all over Newcastle now. With Manchester City being held 0-0 at Norwich, they could be top of the league in 25 minutes or so.
64' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Newcastle make a substitution. Dan Gosling is on the field, replacing Hatem Ben Arfa.
63' GOOOAAALLL!!!
...and he does! That's the hat-trick for the mercurial Belgian, nonchalantly rolling the ball into the bottom right of the goal and leaving Tim Krul with no chance.
62' IDIOTIC DEFENDING
Replays show that, miles away from the ball, Yanga-Mbiwa pulled down Samuel Eto'o in the box. The corner was poor and there was no need for it whatsoever - idiotic defending. Hazard can make it three...
61' PENALTY CHELSEA
Frustration from Yanga-Mbiwa sees him scythe down Hazard on the left having been beaten by the Belgian once again. The free-kick from Lampard is dangerous and is put out for a corner. Lampard takes it and the ball's cleared - but Howard Webb points to the penalty spot!
59' MORE HAZARD BRILLIANCE
Hazard continues to run riot, changing pace from a standing start to leave his man trailing on the left before seeing his cross knocked out for a corner. Newcastle have been coping well with set-pieces though and they clear again.
58' ETO'O CLOSE!
Oh this so nearly could have been three. Ivanovic crosses from deep on the right and Samuel Eto'o's in the box to meet it. Mike Williamson makes an excellent last ditch challenge though as the forward pulls the trigger and it's safely into the arms of Tim Krul.
56' TIM KRUL DOWN
Tim Krul is down and receiving treatment on his ankle, possibly twisting it when slipping over earlier. He looks like he's going to be ok to continue after several minutes being attended to.
54' SUBLIME FROM HAZARD
That near-miss seems to have woken Chelsea up again, having looked content to sit out this half. Eden Hazard plays Samuel Eto'o through down the left with a sumptuous half-volleyed backheel and the Cameroonian wins a corner, which is dealt with by Newcastle.
53' TIM KRUL CLANGER!
Almost catastrophic for Tim Krul here as a big clearance from David Luiz surprises the goalkeeper, who slips on the edge of the area. The ball bounces over his head but runs wide of the goal with Oscar just unable to get to it.
49' SAMMY AMEOBI BOOKED
Branislav Ivanovic gets Ameobi on the wrong side of him and has his heels clipped by the youngster on the edge of the area on the right. It's a booking for Ameobi. Lampard swings the free-kick in but it's cleared by the defence.
47' NEWCASTLE ERROR
A lax back-pass to Tim Krul by Paul Dummett almost lets Samuel Eto'o in but the Dutchman gets there just ahead of him.
46' SECOND PERIOD BEGINS
We're under way here for the second period. Chelsea are playing from left to right. No changes on either side.
45' HALF-TIME SUMMARY
Newcastle haven't done too much wrong in this half but have been undone by two moments of sheer quality from a Chelsea side you suspect have plenty more left in the tank. Gradually overcoming their opponents in the possession stakes, the Blues took the lead after Ivanovic's cross from the right was swept in first time by Eden Hazard on 27 minutes. The Belgian has been wonderful so far and he put away the second goal beautifully too, following a stunning box-to-box counter-attack started by David Luiz. For their part, Newcastle have had a couple of long-range shots but, after threatening earlier, their chief danger Hatem Ben Arfa has been well marshalled by the home team. This game already feels wrapped up in truth, the second half perhaps just a case of how many more Chelsea want to put away.
45' HALF-TIME
The last chance of the half falls to Samuel Eto'o as Hazard plays him through on the left of the area. He turns one way, then another... then another again, eventually being crowded out. The referee then blows for half-time.
45' NEWCASTLE CORNER
Newcastle have a corner as we near half-time. It's taken short but Chelsea are wise to it and Ben Arfa is harried off the ball. Goal kick.
44' HAZARD CLOSE TO HAT-TRICK
This game already has the feel of being done and dusted and Eden Hazard almost adds a further finality to proceedings, taking the ball from Wilian, jinking inside one player and firing a left foot shot just wide from the edge of the area.
41' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
After that knock earlier on, Mathieu Debuchy comes off, to be replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
40' DE JONG CHANCE
Luuk De Jong has been quiet on his debut but he has a half opportunity here as he rises to meet Ameobi's cross on the six yard box, his header comfortable for Cech. Up the other end it's Eto'o who's the latest to pepper the Newcastle goal, firing just wide from 20 yards out.
38' WILLIAN FIRES WIDE
Willian's play in linking midfield and attack has been sensational; this attempt at goal less so. After build-up play down the right, he receives the ball from Ivanovic's cross and fires a volley that soars over the bar and towards the upper tier.
36' WHAT HAVE NEWCASTLE DONE WRONG?
Newcastle must be scratching their heads. They haven't done too much wrong this half, but have been undone by two excellent goals, finished off by a player at the pinnacle of his form.
34' GOOOAAALLL!!!
And that is why. From the Newcastle corner Chelsea launch an utterly breathtaking counter-attack. David Luiz, on the edge of his own box, finds Willian on the halfway line who spreads it left to Eden Hazard. Hazard advances on the penalty area, plays a deft one-two with Eto'o in the box and hits the return first time beyond Tim Krul. Pure, pure class from Chelsea.
33' SISSOKO ONE-ON-ONE!
Sissoko is through on goal after a lovely little ball through! The midfielder wastes it though as a heavy first touch allows Cech to scramble out and get it out for a corner. He should've done so much better.
30' NEWCASTLE FIGHTING FOR PARITY
Newcastle have attempted to get back into it since the goal. Davide Santon has a shot with his right foot that's easily saved by Petr Cech, and then Sissoko manages to bustle down the right before getting in a cross that the keeper is equal to at his near post.
27' GOOOAAALLL!!!
And there's the opening goal. It had been coming and finally Chelsea penetrate Newcastle as Branislav Ivanovic gets down the right and sweeps in a low cross that Hazard meets on the edge of the area, firing a right-footed shot past Tim Krul. A deserved lead.
26' OSCAR GOES CLOSE
Chelsea are now very much camped on the edge of the Newcastle area and they go close again as Azpilicueta finds Eto'o on the left and the forward lays it off to Oscar, whose right-footed shot is a whisker wide of the left post.
23' CHELSEA CORNER
Chelsea are getting more on top now and win a corner after Samuel Eto'o has a cross from the right blocked. From the corner Ivanovic has a header that's saved by Krul.
19' SAMMY AMEOBI DAZZLING RUN
And still we go end-to-end. Sammy Ameobi manages to get past three challenges as he charges into the Chelsea half, before passing to Sissoko. It's another long range effort from the midfielder, but this time he fires wide.
18' HAZARD LOOKING DANGEROUS
Up the other end and it's Eden Hazard causing the Newcastle defence problems, as he dribbles into the penalty area and attempts to find Eto'o with a cross - it's cut out.
17' BEN ARFA SHOT
As he often does, Hatem Ben Arfa has looked most likely to cause danger for Newcastle. He runs down the right and cuts inside before curling a left-footed shot towards goal that Cech gets down low to save.
15' DEBUCHY DOWN
Mathieu Debuchy is down and receiving treatment - the last thing Alan Pardew needs. The full-back fell awkwardly when challenging for a header. The Frenchman looks ok to continue though a little tender.
11' FRANK LAMPARD SHOT
Samuel Eto'o wriggles free on the edge of the area and squares the ball right to Frank Lampard, who has a low shot saved by Tim Krul.
8' CHELSEA COMFORTABLE
Chelsea are on top without really hitting top gear so far; the home side look confident that the goals will come eventually.
5' NEWCASTLE WAKING UP
Newcastle are seeking to get into the game now. Ben Arfa and Debuchy attack down the right but are crowded out. Moments later Sissoko fires a rasping shot from range with his right foot that flies over the bar.
4' CHELSEA FREE-KICK
Steven Taylor commits a foul and Chelsea have a free-kick some 30 yards out. Frank Lampard and David Luiz are eyeing up a pop at goal and it's Lampard who hits it, the Chelsea skipper firing the ball wide of the left post with his right foot.
2' EARLY CHELSEA CHANCE
A taste of what's to come for Newcastle you fear. Hatem Ben Arfa is caught in possession in his own half and the ball is swept left to Eden Hazard. The Belgian takes on his man and fires a low left-footed drive from inside the area that Tim Krul has to muddy himself to save.
1' FIRST-HALF UNDER WAY
So we get under way here at Stamford Bridge! Third place Chelsea will have been delighted by Arsenal's 5-1 thrashing in the early kick-off away to Liverpool, and can now overtake the Gunners this afternoon with a win. They're wearing their familiar blue shirts and shorts, playing from right to left. Newcastle are in their traditional black and white stripes.
0' TERRY IN STANDS
John Terry's seen sitting in the stands. He's wearing a coat so I can't tell whether he's wearing his full kit under there or not unfortunately.
0' JOHN TERRY RESTED
John Terry's run of playing in every minute of Chelsea's Premier League campaign this season has come to an end. He's rested after suffering a minor muscle strain. Will it matter today? I'm not convinced it will. Sticking my neck out and predicting a home win today.
0' DE JONG STARTS FOR NEWCASTLE
Newcastle give a debut to striker Luuk De Jong, following his transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach. Somewhat illustrating the fact that Alan Pardew is struggling for numbers, Davide Santon is in midfield. Ramires is on the bench for Chelsea as Mourinho brings Oscar back into the starting line-up, with David Luiz reverting back to defence. Just give minutes to go until kick-off.
0' NEWCASTLE UNITED TEAM
Tim Krul, Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett, Vurnon Anita, Davide Santon, Hatem Ben Arfa, Moussa Sissoko, Sammy Ameobi, Luuk De Jong. SUBSTITUTES: Rob Elliot, Massadio Haidara, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Shola Ameobi, Adam Armstrong.
0' CHELSEA TEAM
Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nemanja Matic, Frank Lampard, Willian, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto'o. SUBSTITUTES: Mark Schwarzer, Ashley Cole, John Obi Mikel, Ramires, Andre Schurrle, Mohamed Salah, Demba Ba Demba Ba.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Chelsea's Fernando Torres is still unavailable because of a knee injury but new signing Mohamed Salah might make his debut, having been an unused substitute at Manchester City. With Remy suspended and Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse unlikely to be fit, Newcastle again look short of options up front, while midfielder Cheick Tiote is expected to miss the next two matches with a hamstring injury.
0' NEWCASTLE OUT OF FORM
Newcastle have beaten the Blues once this season, taking the league game at St. James' Park 2-0 in November; but Alan Pardew's side have won just one in six in the Premier League and, with no replacement coming in for Yohan Cabaye after his switch to Paris Saint-Germain, the extent of his loss was all too clear in the 3-0 loss to Sunderland. A lack of creativity and defensive grit in the midfield was partly to blame for the defeat and, given how strong Chelsea's midfield looked on Monday, it could be another torrid time in the centre of the park for the Magpies. They'll be struggling up front too today, with Loic Remy still suspended following his red card against Norwich. A more heartening stat for the travelling support is that they've seen their side take 10 points from their last five away matches.
0' MOURINHO DOWNPLAYING TITLE CREDENTIALS
"The title race is between two horses and a little horse that needs milk and needs to learn how to jump. Maybe next season we can race.” That was Mourinho speaking after his side had beaten fellow challengers Manchester City on Monday; make no mistake though, the Portuguese manager believes his side can go all the way and both he and City can leapfrog leaders Arsenal this weekend, should they drop points against Liverpool. Eden Hazard was mesmerising on Monday, and the Belgian has talked up his ambitions of being able to match the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. "To get to their level, it's a case of working hard every day in training, enjoying myself and expressing myself as much as I can on the football field" he said in the week.
0' WELCOME TO STAMFORD BRIDGE
Hello and welcome to Stamford Bridge where Chelsea, five days after doing what's seemed the impossible this season and beating Manchester City on their home turf, try to avoid the comedown against a Newcastle United side currently in the doldrums following capitulation in the Tyne-Wear derby last weekend at home to Sunderland. Jose Mourinho continues to talk down his side's Premier League title aspirations, despite coming away with a 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium with a phenomenal performance; however his side will surely be brimming with confidence and, if Newcastle haven't worked out how to cope without Yohan Cabaye today, they could be lambs to the slaughter.
