Swansea City vs. Cardiff City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SWANSEA 3 CARDIFF 0
Swansea beat local rivals Cardiff easily in the end in Garry Monk's first game in charge, a result that lifts them into the top half of the table. There was nothing to choose between two ordinary sides in a dismal first half, but Swansea bossed the second. Wayne Routledge gave them the lead within two minutes of the restart, getting on the end of a perfect pass from substitute Pablo Hernandez. Routledge turned provider 10 minutes from time, supplying the cross from which Nathan Dyer headed home. Wilfried Bony headed a third from a Hernandez free-kick five minutes from time. Cardiff worked manfully, but lacked quality in the attacking third. Their outstanding player Craig Bellamy went closest, smashing a fierce drive against the top of the crossbar when the score was 1-0.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minutes of added time.
88' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Dyer gets a great reception as he goes off, making way for Neil Taylor.
87' SWANSEA BOOKING
A tackle from behind by Jordon Mutch borne out of frustration earns him a yellow card.
86' GOAL DETAILS
Bony escaped his marker to head home a perfectly-delivered free-kick from the right from Hernandez, who is credited with his second assist of the match.
85' GOAL: SWANSEA 3 CARDIFF 0
Wilfried Bony heads home and Swansea are in dreamland.
83' CAULKER THE IRON MAN
Entering this weekend, Cardiff defender Steven Caulker was one of only four outfield players to play all 2,160 minutes in the Premier League this season. The others were Tottenham's Michael Dawson, Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak and Chelsea defender John Terry.
80' GOAL DETAILS
That should seal the points for the home side. Routledge lifted a perfectly-weighted centre in from the left and Dyer stooped to head home from close range.
79' GOAL: SWANSEA 2 CARDIFF 0
Nathan Dyer grabs a second for the Swans.
79' SWANSEA BOOKING
Hernandez hacks down Mutch and is rightly shown the yellow card. Kim hooks over from the resulting free-kick.
77' CARDIFF SUBSTITUTION
Wilfried Zaha has flattered to deceive tonight. He goes off, to be replaced by Jordon Mutch.
76' FIERCE STRIKE
Dyer is allowed the time to line up a shot which fizzes not too far over the crossbar from 25 yards.
73' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
Incredibly, if struggling Swansea manage to hang on to this slender advantage, they will end Saturday in the top half of the Premier League.
69' CARDIFF SUBSTITUTION
Cardiff make a change as well, Kevin McNaughton coming on for Fabio.
69' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Here is the second Swansea change, Jose Canas replacing De Guzman.
68' DEFLECTED WIDE
Davies advances down the left before finding Bony, who swivels and gets in a shot on the turn that deflects wide off the thigh of Turner.
65' SET-PIECE THREAT
Flores meets a De Guzman corner from the left with a flicked header and Cardiff can be thankful an unwitting defender gets in the way, otherwise they would be two goals adrift.
63' NEEDING TREATMENT
They're dropping like flies now. Kim is down with an ankle injury and De Guzman is nursing a blow to the head, caused by a sneaky elbow from Bellamy.
61' RANGEL GOES DOWN
Campbell chases a loose ball and hauls Rangel to the floor. The full-back says his shoulder is hurt, but it may be a bit of kidology, looking at the smile on his face.
57' ONLY JUST WIDE
Dyer advances through midfield and his shot from 25 yards is not that far of the right-hand upright.
55' CARDIFF SUBSTITUTION
Cardiff make a switch, with Fraizer Campbell replacing the ineffective Jones.
53' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Bellamy delivers a dipping free-kick from the right, but Turner cannot get around Davies to get his head on the ball.
51' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Cardiff respond and Bellamy's blistering shot hits the top of the bar with Vorm beaten.
48' GOAL DETAILS
Pablo Hernandez makes an instant impact, threading a pass through for Routledge, who slots a shot into the corner.
47' GOAL: SWANSEA 1 CARDIFF 0
Wayne Routledge gives Swansea the lead.
46' KIM WANTS A PENALTY
Kim goes down rather too easily under a challenge from Davies and is mistaken if he thinks he is going to be given a penalty for that.
46' SWANSEA SUBSTITUTION
Swansea have made a change at the break, with Pablo Hernandez coming on for Marvin Emnes.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Swansea get the second half under way.
45' HT: SWANSEA 0 CARDIFF 0
It's goalless at the break. Big on endeavour, low on quality and memorable attacking efforts in equally short supply. We've seen one swerving strike from Peter Whittingham comfortably saved and a couple of chances Kenwyne Jones might have done better with. According to ask.com, it takes latex paint only an hour to dry. If you can find some near you recently applied it might be a more enjoyable way of spending the next 60 minutes. Only saying. If not, see you back here at the Liberty Stadium in 15 minutes.
45' TAME STRIKE
Kim is robbed on the edge of the Cardiff area, but Routledge shoots tamely at Marshall.
42' NOTHING TO SEPARATE THEM
Cardiff have lost their last five away from home, but they have given as good as they have got in this opening half.
38' GLORIOUS CHANCE
Dyer then gets round the outside for Swansea and plays a low ball into centre which is just begging to be tapped home, but none of the home side's attacking players anticipated what was going to happen.
37' SWERVING SHOT
A wickedly swerving left-footed shot from Whittingham forces Vorm into a save. That's the best effort we've seen so far.
36' JONES DISAPPOINTS
Jones has been so ponderous for Cardiff. And Zaha is wasted out wide. Take off the lumbering centre-forward, get the on-loan Manchester United player into the centre and bring on an expansive player like Mutch or Noone. Bellamy's shot is deflected over in the mean-time from a quickly-taken free-kick.
34' QUIZ ANSWER
The seven different Premier League clubs Craig Bellamy has scored for are: Coventry, Newcastle, Blackburn, Liverpool, West Ham, Manchester City and Cardiff.
32' COMMENTATOR'S CURSE
Is the commentator's curse an urban myth or for real? Let's put it to the test: this dreadful match is going to end 0-0. We'll come and wake you up if anything happens. Promise.
29' LOSING GROUND
Earlier results meant that Swansea dropped four places to 16th, just one point above the relegation zone. Even a win for Cardiff tonight would fail to haul them out of the bottom three, unless it was by nine clear goals.
27' IT'S QUIZ TIME
Craig Bellamy became the first footballer in Premier League history to score for seven different clubs when he netted against Norwich last weekend. Name those seven clubs in order. Answer in a few minutes.
25' PULLING THE STRINGS
Bellamy torments the Swansea defence, playing a one-two with John and looking for Jones, who wastes another passable chance. Bellamy looks away in disgust.
23' AS TIGHT AS EXPECTED
The last three South Wales derbies have seen a total three goals. It's going to be equally tight tonight, judging by what we have seen so far. That latest Bony snap-shot ending up in the general vicinity of the corner flag hardly gives cause for optimism.
20' ZAHA IMPRESSING
Zaha has caught the eye for Cardiff in the early going. He works back to help his full-back in defence and offers genuine pace on the counter-attack.
18' WAY OVER THE BAR
The referee plays an excellent advantage after Britton is tripped. Finally the ball is rolled back to De Guzman, who shoots way over the bar from the edge of the box.
15' CHANCE WASTED
Bellamy delivers a superb cross from near the right corner flag but Jones fails to make solid contact in the centre. The ball dribbles out for a goal-kick, but that could so easily have ended up in the back of the Swansea net.
11' GOALS IN SHORT SUPPLY
Don't expect a glut of early goals today. Only one Premier League club has scored fewer than Swansea's seven first-half goals this season - and that's Cardiff.
8' EARLY FLASHPOINT
Referee Marriner tries to diffuse a potentially explosive situation between Rangel and Zaha. He's trying to keep his cards in his pocket, which is always a good sign.
6' PROMISING SIGNS
We've seen more from Swansea in this opening five minutes than we did in the whole game at West Ham last weekend. They failed to register a single shot on target at Upton Park.
4' MARSHALL TO THE RESCUE
Bony catches the Cardiff defence snoozing, but is denied by a superb lunging save from Marshall.
2' WEAK SHOT
Swansea start brightly. Emnes lifts the ball over Turner and finds Routledge to his left. The winger's weak shot is more like a back-pass.
1' HERE WE GO
Cardiff kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
Swansea make four changes to the side beaten at West Ham. Michel Vorm is fit again and returns in goal for Gerhard Tremmel, Angel Rangel replaces Dwight Tiendalli, Jonjo Shelvey has failed a fitness test and his place goes to Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes replaces Jordi Amat. Cardiff drop Craig Noone and Jordon Mutch to the bench, with Kim Bo-Kyung and Wilfried Zaha earning starting spots.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Swansea: Vorm, Rangel, Chico, Williams, Ben Davies, de Guzman, Britton, Dyer, Emnes, Routledge, Bony. Subs: Amat, Taylor, Hernandez, Lamah, Canas, Tremmel, Ngog. Cardiff: Marshall, Da Silva, Caulker, Turner, John, Medel, Zaha, Kim, Whittingham, Bellamy, Jones. Subs: Cala, Campbell, Noone, Mutch, McNaughton, Daehli, Lewis.
0' PREVIEW
New boss Garry Monk could turn himself into an instant hit with the supporters if his Swansea side can grab a vital win over bitter South Wales rivals Cardiff in his first match in charge on Saturday. Monk, still on the playing staff at Swansea, was installed as interim head coach “for the foreseeable future” after the removal of Michael Laudrup on Tuesday. It seemed a harsh decision by Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins to part company with the Dane little more than a year after he had led them to the League Cup, the first major honour in the club's history. But so pitiful was the Swans' performance at strugglers West Ham last Saturday that it was they who looked like the side doomed to relegation. Managerial turmoil is nothing new to this part of the world this season, with Cardiff having controversially axed Malky Mackay at the end of December and replaced him with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former Manchester United player has a chance to claim his own bit of history, because in 102 years of local rivalry neither side has ever managed to complete a league double, something that Cardiff could achieve with a repeat of November's victory at Cardiff City Stadium. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a tough call removing fans' favourite Peter Whittingham only 38 minutes into last weekend's match with Norwich. He threw on on-loan Manchester United striker Wilfried Zaha, a man who previously had only played a total of 30 minutes Premier League football this season. Zaha, though, is a performer who relishes the big stage, and he had an immediate impact off the bench, setting up an equaliser for Craig Bellamy that helped the Bluebirds come from behind to record a precious win. Don't be surprised to see former Crystal Palace man Zaha get his first start today and Bellamy will doubtless be to the fore again. Cardiff, though, are bound to come under pressure as the away team and they will hope for another stellar display in goal from David Marshall. The stopper was outstanding last weekend against Norwich, making two world-class saves to deny Bradley Johnson and Nathan Redmond. Swansea need more goals from Wilfried Bony and they will be hoping Michu is at least able to play some part off the bench.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Swansea just have the edge in league meetings between the sides with 20 wins to 19 by Cardiff and 16 games being drawn. At the Liberty Stadium, and the Vetch Field before it, Swansea have 15 wins to five by Cardiff, with a further seven meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides on Nov. 3 saw Cardiff win 1-0 with a goal from Steven Caulker just after the hour. The Swans had goalkeeper Michel Vorm sent off late on for a professional foul. This is the first time Swansea have hosted a meeting between the sides in the top flight.
0' FORM GUIDE
Swansea start the day in 12th place with 24 points from 24 games, three more points than Cardiff who are next to bottom in 19th. Swansea's return of three league wins at home this season is the joint-worst in the division and only bottom club Fulham have conceded more goals in front of their own fans. Cardiff have won just once away, a 2-1 triumph at Fulham on Sep. 28. They have scored just seven goals in 12 away games, with only Crystal Palace having a poorer scoring record on the road. Cardiff won at Norwich last time out, ending a run of seven games without a win. Swansea have only one win in ten, a 2-0 home victory over bottom club Fulham at the end of last month.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Goalkeeper Michel Vorm is back in training after a knee injury and Michu has returned to the first-team following almost two months out with an ankle problem, but the best either can realistically hope for is a place on the Swansea bench. Jonjo Shelvey will undergo a late fitness test on a hamstring niggle. Cardiff could hand a debut to central defender Juan Cala, who has only just joined the club after having his contract terminated by Sevilla. Mark Hudson is likely to miss out again with a hamstring problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower has dispensed 59 cautions in 18 Premier League appointments this season. Clubs from the North East had been the recipients of his first four red cards, two from Newcastle and two from Sunderland. He broke that pattern in his last match by sending off Tottenham's Danny Rose against Manchester City, but it proved to be the wrong call and was subsequently overturned on appeal. The assistant referees today are Mike Mullarkey and Marc Perry, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
