Manchester United vs. Fulham
Minute Commentary
An extraordinary and quite frankly baffling game at Old Trafford comes to an end as Fulham - who for over three quarters of the game looked to have taken a stunning smash-and-grab win here, surprised everyone - not least the thousands of fans heading for the exits early - once more by grabbing a last-gasp equaliser after Manchester United had gone 2-1 up. The home side's tactics were predictable, putting in over 80 crosses over the course of the 90 minutes; but Fulham had set out so deeply you always felt one would get through. It was the away side who'd drawn first blood though, after Steven Sidwell ghosted through unmarked to guide home Lewis Holtby's cross. Kieran Richardson then missed a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 to the relegation-strugglers after being put through one-on-one with De Gea. He might've rued that as, after bringing on Valencia and Januzaj, United first equalised then took the lead in quick succession; Van Persie prodded home from close range and Michael Carrick then hit a deflected 20-yard shot two minutes later for 2-1 with ten minutes to go. As the home fans started to head for home though, the Londoners scored a shock equaliser and David Moyes must now prepare himself for a whole load of new questions about just where it is his side are headed. It certainly isn't towards the Champions League.
One final Manchester United attack - from wide of course - is repelled by Fulham and that's the full-time whistle blown. Bizarre, bizarre game. 2-2.
...Well if you did put a bet on it there you've just got your money back and more! With thousands leaving the stadium, Kieran Richardson is played into the penalty area on the right, he puts the ball back in the mixer and Darren Bent is there to scramble home a headed goal.
Manchester United counter-attack and Juan Mata - who's been quiet today - takes a ball from Rooney on the right and fires wide. Moments later Robin Van Persie follows up with a cheeky chip that's just over the bar. Loads of Manchester United fans leaving incidentally, clearly happy that the job's done. What price a Fulham equaliser now...
It's a corner for Manchester United and Mata takes it short to Evra who surges into the box and cuts the ball back to Chris Smalling, who cannons the ball off Hernandez who can't divert it home.
There are now so many players flooding the Fulham box that many shots are hitting off team mates. Adnan Januzaj hits Patrice Evra's low cross first time but it canons off Javier Hernandez and Fulham can clear. They attempt an attack themselves but Holtby is dispossessed by Rooney on the edge of the box.
Just the 74 crosses put in by Manchester United today...
Michael Carrick fancies another and, after picking up the ball on the right of the field, he unleashes a low drive that Stekelenburg has to get down low to save.
And just like that Manchester United are in front. A cross by Januzaj is cleared to Michael Carrick on the edge of the box, he fires a shot that's deflected by Scott Parker beyond Stekelenburg. Old Trafford is bouncing and David Moyes looks incredibly relieved.
But finally the dam is burst! Robin Van Persie is on hand at the left post to guide home after Juan Mata's effort in the area is blocked! It all came from Patrice Evra's ball in from the left.
Fulham are defending like lions here. They have to cave in surely but once again a challenge flies in as Van Persie prepares to shoot from 20 yards. Moments later Riether slides five yards across the turf to cut out a ball.
A real goalmouth scramble here as Wayne Rooney works his way into the box past two players and puts in a ball across the six-yard box. Fulham only partially clear and the ball is worked back towards Carrick; his low drive from outside the area hit a United player though and Fulham clear.
This one from the 19 year-old does a little better and he wins a corner from it. However, it's headed away once again by Fulham, who then sigh, sit back, and wait for the next wide ball to come in. They won't be waiting long.
If you're wondering what's been going on in the last couple of minutes - some more crosses mainly. Adnan Januzaj puts in the latest but over-hits it and it sails over the heads of everyone and out for a throw-in on the right.
Wayne Rooney has a shot from the edge of the area as the ball falls to him, but his curled right-footed effort is wide of the left post.
Manchester United make another two changes. Rafael and Ashley Young are off to be replaced by Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez. There'd been some more crossing fun before that: Ashley Young jinking between two players and putting the ball across that was knocked behind for a corner. Fulham, though, dealt with it.
And another cross comes in, and it's another close call, as no one can quite reach Ashley Young's header back in across the six yard box. Up the other end and Darren Bent does well to muscle Chris Smalling off the cleared ball and set free Kvist. Kvist crosses into the area but there's no one there for the visitors.
Time for a Fulham change after Rooney prods the 54th cross of United's game towards goal but sees it gathered comfortably by Stekelenburg. Scott Parker is coming on in the midfield, to replace Ryan Tunicliffe.
Manchester United make a change. Adnan Januzaj has come on for Darren Fletcher. Can the 19 year-old inspire his team mates? They've put in over 50 crosses so far this game. No goals.
Robin Van Persie is screaming for a penalty as he latches onto a ball into the area on the right and his attempt at heading the ball back across goal appears to be handled by the attentive Dan Burn. Nothing given by the referee though and the Dutchman's furious.
Agood ball from Rooney deep on the left sees Rafael arrive in the area later to plant a diving header at goal. Stekelenburg again saves, although the flag had gone up for offside.
Incredible save by Stekelenburg. Evra is down the left again and he puts in a cross that the goal keeper can only parry. He redeems himself at the second attempt though, tipping Rooney's right-footed shot from close range away for a corner, after the forward had wriggled free of his defender in the box. Great stuff. Fulham clear the corner but United are still attacking...
Fulham on a rare attack in the United half. Steven Sidwell - the only player to have scored for them in 2014 - has an effort from outside the area but fires over. Up the other end Wayne Rooney has a pop from range too, he shoots wide with his right foot.
The second period has started much as the first went, with the home side laying siege to the visitors' penalty area. Rafael puts in a dangerous cross from the right that the Cottagers struggle to clear, then they have an even better one as Mata picks out Young with a sumptuous cross field ball and he plays in Van Persie on his outide, whose ball across the six yard box is begging for someone to get on the end of it. No-one does though and it's a Fulham goal kick.
We're under way here for the second period and Fulham have made a change. Darren Bent has come on and he's replaced Tankovic. After those dangerous breaks in the first-half, is Rene Meulensteen eyeing further goals? Fulham are playing from left to right.
Fulham have parked the bus, but they allowed Steven Sidwell to nip out the door and grab the only goal of the half while they were at it. In a scoreline that's hard to believe, given Manchester United's utter dominance of possession, the relegation-strugglers are 1-0 up after a rare attack saw Sidwell pick up Holtby's ball from deep, unmarked, and guide home. Indeed, Fulham have had the second best chance of the game too, with Kieran Richardson spooning over when one-on-one with De Gea. Aside from that it's been all Manchester United but, a Robin Van Persie sitter aside - firing over from three yards out - they have found it hard to penetrate the wall of white, as cross after cross is repelled. Is playing through the middle an alternative option? It may have to be unless David Moyes wants to stoop to a new low in his increasingly undistinguished tenure as Manchester United boss.
Kieran Richardson has United's defence scrambling again as he does Nemanja Vidic for pace down the left and looks to square the ball for Lewis Holtby in the centre. Thankfully for Vidic, Wayne Rooney has tracked back and is there to clear for a corner. United manage to deal with that and the half-time whistle blows. "Glory glory Man United" rings out around the ground - it's rarely sounded so hollow.
John Arne Riise almost gives United a way back into the match as he nonchalantly gets his header to Patrice Evra's cross from the left - and almost guides it past Stekelenburg into the net! The ball goes just over the bar and the Norwegian is spared. From Mata's corner, Evra then gets to use his own head, getting on the end of Rooney's ball from the centre of the field but only finding Stekelenburg who clutches onto it gratefully.
So close from United! Michael Carrick seems to have the entire Fulham team around him in the penalty area, but he wriggles and twists to create space and fires in a shot that Stekelenburg does excellently to tip away. It's a corner to United and from Mata's cross Vidic arrives late in the area to power a header at goal; it's straight at the goalkeeper though who saves.
And then Fulham have a great chance to double their lead. Ashley Young's corner is cleared by Kieran Richardson and he races up to support young Muamer Tankovic who races some 60 yards with the ball up to the home penalty area. He lays it off to the former United man who has de Gea one-on-one but somehow scoops his right-footed effort over the bar from inside the area. That really should've been 2-0.
Patrice Evra is played through down the left by Wayne Rooney but sees his low ball from the byline cut out by Fulham. It has to be said they've set out to defend and they are doing so excellently - even if it is making the game a bit boring.
72% of possession for Manchester United now but still just one shot on target. There's been a lot of knocking it wide and then crossing it in from the home side so far - which Fulham have largely been able to cope with thanks to having at least six players in their own box at any one time.
Once again it's panic stations at the Fulham far post as Fletcher puts in a similar ball to Mata's earlier and Van Persie gets up to head it back across towards goal. There are no United players following up though and Fulham clear. That knock down was begging for someone to get on the end of it - where was everyone?
Michael Carrick finally gets pulses racing as a partially cleared ball falls to him 25 yards out and he hits a sweet half volley that swings just wide of the right-hand post.
Stekelenburg is finally forced into action after Juan Mata puts in a ball to the back post from the right and Ashley Young pops up to have a header from a tight angle saved. Rafael follows up moments later with a dangerous cross from the right but it's well dealt with by Fulham.
No disrespect to Fulham, but if Manchester United can't beat a side bottom of the league who to all intents and purposes weren't even set out with scoring a goal in mind today, then you have to wonder how much longer the club are going to give David Moyes. That Van Persie miss aside, there's been precious little in response from the Reds so far and the crowd are still in stunned silence.
Manchester United try to hit back instantly and Rafael curls in a beautiful cross from the right to the far post where Van Persie is sitting unmarked. He surely has to bury it but instead spoons it horribly over three or four yards out. A sitter.
Utterly gobsmacking. Fulham have had to use binoculars to get a sight of the Manchester United penalty area so far, but they make their first real foray up there on the left - and score from it. It's a good ball from deep by Holtby, but no one tracks Steve Sidwell as he bursts into the area to get on the end of it and guide it past David de Gea with his right boot. That could not be more against the run of play.
Patrice Evra has been getting down the left plenty and he finds Wayne Rooney in the penalty area with a low cross. Fulham have three men on him instantly though; the ball breaks back to Evra and his cross - to the far post this time - is put out for another corner. As they've done so far this game though, Fulham manage to deal with Mata's ball in.
For all Manchester United's possession (66% of it so far,) they've not actually mustered a shot on target yet and only one effort in total. Is that a sign of Fulham's containment plan working well? Or are the home side just taking a while to warm up?
Van Persie is almost in again as Wayne Rooney hits a ball from deep on the right into the area. Stekelenburg gets to the ball just ahead of the Dutchman but spills it and, fortunately for the stopper, he has Riether on hand to hack the ball clear.
There's not much for Fulham to aim at when they do break, they're sitting so deep that when they get the ball they've nowhere to go.
Wayne Rooney has a bit of a tangle with Steven Sidwell and the Fulham midfielder goes down. Rooney looks frustrated but he can't have any complaints. United are back on top soon enough though, and Robin Van Persie burst into the box on the left, but his shot's blocked by Dan Burn just as he pulls the trigger.
Ashley Young is played into space on the left and charges towards the area with no Fulham player closing him down. His cross into the box is headed out for a corner by Heitinga. Rooney takes it from the left but it's cleared again.
It's been a patient start by the Red Devils, but they work their first dangerous attack of the game down the right, with Darren Fletcher's eventual cross cleared by the defence. They then gain a corner after a cross from Evra is deflected out. Fulham deal with it.
A minute's silence is held for Munich and then the game gets under way; Manchester United are wearing their traditional red shirts and white shorts. Today they're also wearing black armbands. Fulham are wearing white shirts and black shorts.
There are huge banners being passed around the crowd to mark the 68th anniversary of the Munich disaster. A fitting tribute by the current Manchester United side would be a resounding victory this afternoon. Meulensteen's selection today is certainly quizzical, 18 year-old Swede Tankovic his sole man up front, a host of first teamers on the bench. Lambs to the slaughter?
Fulham have made a whopping nine changes to the team who were knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United in the middle of the week and there's no sign yet of Kostas Mitroglou either, although John Heitinga does start. Manchester United make three changes, with Vidic, Fletcher and Rafael all returning.
Maarten Stekelenburg, Sascha Riether, Dan Burn, John Heitinga, John Arne Riise, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Steve Sidwell, William Kvist, Kieran Richardson, Lewis Holtby, Muamer Tankovic. SUBSTITUTES: David Stockdale, Brede Hangeland, Alex Kacaniklic, Damien Duff, Larnell Cole, Scott Parker, Darren Bent.
David De Gea, Rafael, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Juan Mata, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie. SUBSTITUTES: Anders Lindegaard, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia, Shinji Kagawa, Adnan Januzaj, Javier Hernandez.
Vidic is once again available for Manchester United after suspension. He could replace Jonny Evans, who is out with a calf strain. There'll be another chance to see Mata, Rooney and Van Persie in action today, as the latter two continue their comeback from injury. Fulham's record signing Kostas Mitroglou – signed from Olympiakos in the January transfer window - is likely to make his debut, either from the start or off the bench. Fellow transfer deadline day signing Johnny Heitinga could feature for the first time.
Adding to the gloom around Old Trafford this week has been the announcement that the club's captain Nemanja Vidic will be leaving after eight seasons. Is Vidic's departure another sign that the empire is crumbling, following Sir Alex Fergusion's retirement last summer? The Daily Telegraph seem to think so, writing today “No doubt it is the sense of decline around him, the clear evidence that things are not as they were, that has precipitated Vidic's departure.” It has been in defence where United have been leaky, with none of Jones, Smalling or Evans enough yet to emulate the Serbian and Rio Ferdinand in their pomp. But Manchester United have problems all over the pitch, ones that, thankfully for them, should be relatively untested today.
Although the stats will tell you that Fulham have only avoided defeat at Old Trafford once in 51 years, Meulensteen will be able to draw inspiration from the likes of Everton and West Brom, both of whom ended Old Trafford hoodoos this season – two of four home games the Reds have lost in 2013/2014. Indeed, Moyes' side have lost five of their last eight games in all competitions, form that alarmingly shows no sign of abating, even with the £37 million capture of Juan Mata from Chelsea. Mata's arrival gave a brief resurgence of hope to the Old Trafford faithful, but after going down to Stoke last weekend, the fans' belief that their team can make even fourth spot in the league – the title now far out of sight – is on the wane. Nothing less than a convincing home victory will do.
Beset by poor form, disillusioned players and a manager struggling in the shadow of Sir Alex Fergusion… but that's enough about Fulham for a minute. The great Scot looms large over this Old Trafford fixture, between a Manchester United who David Moyes has struggled to get going in the wake of his departure, and a Fulham outfit who, according to his former number two and current Cottagers boss Rene Meulensteen, “hit rock-bottom” in getting knocked out of the FA Cup by League One side Sheffield United in the week. With Liverpool thrashing Arsenal yesterday, the Red Devils need a win here; even in their current unconvincing form they should be comfortable against a Fulham side void of any hope at the moment. Still, few have expected United to lose as many as the eight they already have this season, so anything's possible.
