Arsenal vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ARSENAL 0 MAN UTD 0
Arsenal miss the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League after being held to a disappointingly dull goalless draw at Emirates Stadium. It could have been worse for Arsene Wenger and his men, however, had former favourite Robin van Persie not wasted the clearest chance of the night inside two minutes when he shot straight at Wojciech Szczesny. Arsenal's build-up play lacked its usual fluidity and two of their best chances both came from corners, Olivier Giroud heading wide from an unmarked position and Laurent Koscielny seeing his header cleared off the line by Antonio Valencia. Giroud then passed up an excellent chance from Bacary Sagna's cross. The highlight of the night came ten minutes from time, Van Persie meeting Wayne Rooney's delightful pass with a thumping header that Szczesny somehow managed to tip on to the bar.
90' UNITED BOOKING
Ashley Young is cautioned in the last minute for a foul.
90' FINE SAVE AGAIN
Cazorla forces De Gea into another diving save near his left-hand post. We are into three minutes of added time.
90' WALL DOES ITS JOB
Arsenal have a free-kick in a dangerous position after a foul by Evra. Ozil lines up the shot, but his left-footer goes into the wall.
88' ARSENAL BOOKING
Sagna fells Rooney and is deservedly shown a yellow card.
85' SMART DE GEA SAVE
Giroud wins the ball high up the pitch and after a quick one-two Cazorla forces De Gea into a save diving to his left.
82' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United's second change sees Ashley Young replace Valencia.
80' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Van Persie almost comes back to haunt Arsenal again. Rooney measures a magnificent pass that the Dutchman meets with a bullet header. Szczesny makes a blinding point-blank save to turn it on to the crossbar.
78' MISS OF THE MATCH
Arsenal should be in front. Giroud escapes the attentions of Vidic to meet a right-wing cross from Sagna and then fails to make contact with the ball. What a miss!
76' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United respond by withdrawing Mata and throwing on Adnan Januzaj.
76' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal make a change with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replacing Rosicky.
75' WAY OVER THE BAR
Cazorla plays the ball back to Rosicky, who curls an effort high over the bar.
74' UNITED BOOKING
The first yellow card of the night goes to Antonio Valencia for a mistimed tackle on Wilshere, who has taken some punishment tonight.
72' WATCH OUT FOR RVP
The last five times these teams have met, Robin van Persie has been on the scoresheet, twice for Arsenal and, more recently, three times for United.
69' LUCKY ESCAPE
Nobody likes to see players booked and Mr Clattenburg has refereed superbly tonight. But Mata thrusts out a left arm to deliberately snuff out an Arsenal attack. Surely that is a caution whoever the player and whatever the time in the match.
67' WAYWARD SHOT
Carrick picks out a pass forward to Cleverley, whose excellent first touch allows him to tee up Mata. Again the shot is wayward from the former Chelsea man.
65' HEADER WIDE
Arsenal have just enjoyed their best two minutes of the match so far. There's a quicker tempo to their passing and it almost brings dividends again, Giroud heading wide from a Gibbs cross.
64' PENALTY CLAIMS
Giroud goes down looking for a penalty after feeling an arm in the back from Vidic, but Mr Clattenburg waves play on.
63' OFF THE LINE
Koscielny almost gives Arsenal the lead. He meets a right-wing corner with an excellent header, but Valencia heads off the line.
62' TIME FOR A CHANGE
Surely it's time for a change soon. United could pinch this if Moyes is brave and throws on Adnan Januzaj.
60' FERGIE'S WATCHING BRIEF
Sir Alex Ferguson is sat in the stands tonight, alongside United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who played at the weekend but is being given a rest this evening.
58' MISSING THEO
He blows hot and cold, certainly, but there's no doubt Arsenal are not the same team without Theo Walcott. When he is fit the England winger gives them pace and width and a different type of attacking threat for when their tippy-tappy intricate passing moves are not working.
56' LACKING PASSION
I have to say I miss the more combustible games between these two in the era when Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira were at their peak. This has been a passionless encounter so far. No bookings? That's not a proper Arsenal and United clash!
53' MATA'S BETTER THAN THAT
Szczesny punches away a left-wing corner unconvincingly, but Mata's instant follow-up is yards wide. The Spaniard scored a stunner here for Chelsea back in October in the Capital One Cup, remember.
50' MIDFIELD ENFORCER
As a destructive force, Tom Cleverley has been one of the game's outstanding players tonight. Ozil and Mata, by contrast, have been hugely disappointing.
48' SET-PIECE THREAT
A United set-piece almost breaks the deadlock. Carrick flicks on Mata's initial delivery and it is only just beyond two onrushing United attackers who had escaped their markers.
47' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United have been forced into a change at the break. That injury has proved too much for Rafael. He has gone off, Rio Ferdinand has come on to play at centre-back and Chris Smalling has shuffled across to right-back.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way.
45' HT: ARSENAL 0 MAN UTD 0
It could have developed into one of the games of the season had both sides taken gilt-edged early chances, but instead a disappointing half ends goalless. Mikel Arteta was caught in possession for Arsenal just two minutes in and Robin van Persie should have twisted the knife one more time into his former employers. Instead he shot straight at Wojciech Szczesny. At the other end, Olivier Giroud should have at least hit the target when afforded a free header at a corner. Other than that, it's been pretty ordinary fare with both goalkeepers largely unemployed.
45' IN NEED OF AN ASPIRIN
It's no surprise that Rafael is still struggling. He came down from quite a height, like one of those half-pipe snowboarders on the Olympics last night. Two added minutes.
44' SHOT BLOCKED
Arsenal break swiftly, but Cazorla shoots straight at a defender from 20 yards.
42' ON THE MEND
Rafael has lengthy treatment but looks like he may continue for now.
40' PAINFUL COLLISION
A clash of heads between Giroud and Rafael leaves both players groggy. United's Brazilian has come off worse, he really landed awkwardly there and may have concussion.
36' GIBBS GETS TREATMENT
Gibbs heads goalwards but lands heavily. The referee stops the game so the full-back can get treatment, which is the right call, but United manager David Moyes is fuming.
34' ON A SHORT FUSE
Rooney looks like he is having one of those nights when he is operating on a short fuse. Referee Clattenburg calls him over, along with captain Vidic and issues a final warning to the England striker.
32' THE HISTORY MEN
Arsenal's 5-1 thrashing at Liverpool on Saturday was the biggest defeat suffered by a Premier League leader since Norwich were hammered 7-1 by Blackburn in October 1992. The Canaries ended up third that season, which is where the bookmakers would have you believe Arsene Wenger's men will also end up come May.
30' CAUGHT IN POSSESSION
Rooney is caught in possession by Arteta, but Giroud fails to profit as he lifts a 25-yard shot into the stands.
26' HEADER WIDE
Giroud escapes the attentions of Vidic at a left-wing corner, but heads well wide under pressure.
24' BE MORE SELFISH
I am a big fan of Mesut Ozil, but it is infuriating the way he often looks for a team-mate rather than goes for goal himself. The Germany midfielder has the chance to test De Gea from the edge of the box but instead opts for an intricate pass and gives the ball away.
22' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
Arsenal will go top with a win tonight. They will finish the night no worse than second after third-placed Manchester City's match was postponed due to high winds.
19' DISMAL EFFORT
What is up with Van Persie tonight? Mata finds him with a magnificent pass but his shot from quite a narrow angle screws off the outside of his right foot and ends up near the corner flag.
17' LULL IN PROCEEDINGS
It was a scintillating start and Arsenal and United should both have netted in the early going. Since then, though, both sides have been giving the ball away far too cheaply.
15' TIRELESS ROONEY
Wayne Rooney must cover more ground than just about any player over the course of a Premier League match. He has been up and down this pitch numerous times already and more than once has occupied a defensive midfield role when Arsenal have come forward.
13' LOOKING MENACING
Van Persie is first to Rafael's ball from the right into the near-post. He fails to get a decent touch with an attempted deft flick and Mertesacker does his defensive job well.
10' AWKWARD SAVE
Rosicky's shot is deflected and De Gea makes an awkward save tumbling to his left. Perhaps the wind had something to do with that.
7' SLIP FROM RVP
It's important to emphasise just how clear-cut an opening that earlier chance was for Van Persie. Normally he would bury that. The sprinklers were on heavily before kick-off and the Dutchman just started to lose his footing as he pulled the trigger. Give the Arsenal groundsman an assist there.
5' BIG CHANCE FOR GIROUD
Back come Arsenal and Ozil threads a ball through for Wilshere, who dummies an initial shot before seeing an effort blocked by Smalling. The unmarked Giroud heads wide from the resulting corner.
3' WHAT A CHANCE
Actually, United should be in front. Arteta is caught in possession and Van Persie has a golden chance but shoots straight at Szczesny.
2' PROMISING START
Sixty seconds gone, still 0-0. Arsenal have already made a better start than they did on Saturday.
1' HERE WE GO
United kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Arsene Wenger makes two changes to the side hammered at Liverpool, with Kieran Gibbs replacing Nacho Monreal at left-back and Tomas Rosicky getting a start in midfield at the expense of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. United also make two changes, Tom Cleverley and Antonio Valencia coming in for Ashley Young and Darren Fletcher.

0' PREVIEW
Arsenal welcome Manchester United to Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night looking to bounce back from the 5-1 spanking handed them by Liverpool on Saturday. “We represent one of the biggest clubs in the world and what we did early on [at Anfield] is not acceptable,” goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny told the official Arsenal website. However, having lost the leadership of the Premier League for only the second time since September, the Gunners can take it straight back thanks to current pole sitters Chelsea having conceded a costly late equaliser at West Brom last night. United under David Moyes are not the foes they were under Sir Alex Ferguson, you only have to see their weekend home display at Fulham to appreciate that. But they are a proud club and becoming only the second side to win at Arsenal this season would instil some confidence into the fallen champions entering the final third of the campaign. Tonight's game kicks off at 1945GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
When Mesut Ozil joined the Gunners in a 42.5 million pound (69.9 million dollar) deal last September it was heralded as a signal of the London club's intent to finally get back into the championship reckoning. The Germany midfielder scored two goals and added five assists in his first seven games, but has just one assist in his last seven matches. So in how many games has Ozil made a meaningful contribution (either goal or assist) that changed the final outcome of the game? Just three times: three assists against Stoke (won 3-1); one goal against Everton (drew 1-1) and one assist against Southampton (drew 2-2). Compare that to, say, Liverpool's Luis Suarez, who has made meaningful contributions in 12 of the 20 games he has played this season. Ozil was dreadful at Anfield on Saturday and needs to rediscover his love for the game and quickly.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 79 wins to 67 by Arsenal and 43 games being drawn. Arsenal have enjoyed superiority in North London, winning 52 times to United's 24 and a further 18 meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides this season on Nov. 10 saw United win 1-0, courtesy of a 27th-minute goal from former Arsenal favourite Robin van Persie. The corresponding match last season on Apr. 28 finished in a 1-1 draw, Theo Walcott giving Arsenal a second-minute lead but Van Persie levelling with a penalty just before half-time.
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal lie in second place with 55 points from 25 games, two points behind Chelsea and one in front of Manchester City. United are seventh, 16 points adrift of top spot and nine points behind Liverpool, who occupy fourth and the final Champions League qualification place. Arsenal have been beaten just once at home in the league this season, by Aston Villa on opening day. They have the best home defensive record in the Premier League, conceding just six goals, and have let in just one goal in their last eight home games. Saturday's thrashing at Anfield brought to an end an eight-game unbeaten run. United have won just two of their last six and have been beaten at Chelsea and, most recently, Stoke, in their last two away games.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Mathieu Flamini serves the last of his three-match ban for Arsenal, while Aaron Ramsey (thigh), Kim Kallstrom (back) and Thomas Vermaelen (calf) are again ruled out. Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott (both knee) are long-term absentees. Forward Yaya Sanogo is available following five months out with a back injury, but the best he can hope for is a place on the bench. United will be without Phil Jones (calf) and Marouane Fellaini (groin), while Jonny Evans (calf) is listed as doubtful. Adnan Januzaj could be recalled after United's lacklustre first-half display against Fulham.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mark Clattenburg, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2004. The Tyne & Wear official has shown 58 yellow cards in 17 Premier League games this season and awarded two penalties. Clattenburg sent off six players last season, the most among top-flight referees. Since dismissing West Brom's Goran Popov in the home defeat by Spurs in February last year Clattenburg had gone 34 matches in all competitions without producing a red card, a run broken on New Year's Day thanks to Kevin Nolan's inexplicable off-the-ball kick on Fernando Amorebieta. That remains his only dismissal of the season. The referee's assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, while Lee Mason is the fourth official.
