Chelsea vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' FT: CHELSEA 1 EVERTON 0
John Terry scores a winner three minutes into stoppage time to break Everton hearts and open up a four-point lead at the top. The Blues skipper toe-poked home a Frank Lampard free-kick to beat Tim Howard from close range. Up to that point it has been a pretty forgettable match, with plenty of effort but a surprising lack of quality in the final third. Howard had earlier denied Lampard and made a magnificent double-save to thwart first Eden Hazard and then Branislav Ivanovic. The closest Everton came to scoring was a Leon Osman shot flicked on by Kevin Mirallas that was superbly kept out by Petr Cech.
90' GOAL: CHELSEA 1 EVERTON 0
John Terry nets a late winner for Chelsea from a Lampard free-kick.
90' EVERTON BOOKING
Jagielka is cautioned for felling Ramires.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be five minutes of added time.
90' INCHES AWAY
Ramires beats one man before unleashing a rasping 25-yard strike that beats Howard but whistles past the post.
89' HOLDING FIRM
Chelsea need to up the tempo here. There's not even been the threat of a late winner so far. Hazard's acrobatic volley is blocked.
86' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Naismith goes down with an injury to his right ankle and needs treatment.
86' VOLLEY GOES OVER
Ivanovic plays a searching cross from the right and picks out the unmarked Schurrle, who volleys over the crossbar.
84' WELL WIDE AGAIN
Another Chelsea strike goes wide, this time from Schurrle.
83' EVERTON BOOKING
Barry is the first Everton man in the book for a cynical trip on Ivanovic. Torres shoots about 20 yards wide from long range.
81' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton's final change sees Aiden McGeady replace Pienaar.
78' TORRES DENIED
Torres latches on to a loose ball, but sees his shot strike Hazard and rebound to safety.
75' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Gerard Deulofeu is getting ready to come on for Everton. He takes the place of Mirallas.
72' HAPPY RETURNS
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic celebrates his 30th birthday today, while Everton's on-loan midfielder Gareth Barry is 33 tomorrow. Whose party will fall flat this weekend?
70' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Samuel Eto'o is replaced by Andre Schurrle for Chelsea.
67' POOR RECORD
Only Manchester United, with six, have taken fewer than Everton's nine points against the current top seven clubs. A draw would be an excellent result for the Merseyside club today.
64' EVERTON SUBSTITUTION
Everton's first substitution sees Osman replaced by Barkley.
62' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Chelsea make another change, with Fernando Torres replacing Willian.
61' BRILLIANT SAVES
Howard makes two magnificent saves to deny first Hazard and then Ivanovic as Chelsea up the pressure. Eto'o then just fails to get on the end of an Ivanovic cross.
59' SUPERB SAVE
Coleman pulls the ball back for Osman, whose shot is flicked on by Mirallas. It looks to be sneaking just inside the post, but Cech makes the save of the match.
56' CHASING RARE DOUBLE
If Everton do the unthinkable and win today, it would be the first time they have done the double over Chelsea since the 1978-79 season.
53' WAY OVER THE BAR
Barry concedes a free-kick in a dangerous area, 25 yards out on the left. Willian lifts a feeble effort into the stands.
52' PENALTY CLAIMS
Chelsea want a penalty for handball by Jagielka, but that's an extremely optimistic shout.
51' TWICE DENIED
Finally Chelsea mount a serious threat. Lampard's first effort is saved by Howard and then Distin bravely blocks the second.
50' JADED OSCAR
Oscar made 70 appearances for club and country last season and has already made 35 this campaign. Is it any wonder he looks a little jaded?
49' PIENAAR HURT
Pienaar stays down after a challenge from Ramires. He's got a bang to the ribs, but he'll be fine.
47' THANKS FOR TURNING UP
Everton almost kicked off the second half with nine men. McCarthy and Baines both emerged late from the changing rooms.
46' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Chelsea have made a change at the break, with Ramires taking the place of Oscar.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Chelsea get the second half under way.
45' HT: CHELSEA 0 EVERTON 0
It's goalless at the break and the visitors will be delighted not only by the scoreline, but by the way they have performed. Roberto Martinez's men have kept the league leaders at arm's length for most of the half and limited the Blues to one Samuel Eto'o shot that was saved by Tim Howard. Everton have gone close to scoring themselves, Leon Osman's long-range shot being tipped over the crossbar by Petr Cech and Kevin Mirallas seeing an effort blocked by Gary Cahill. Don't be totally surprised if Jose Mourinho makes a triple substitution at the interval because he will not have been pleased with what he has seen so far.
45' CLEAR OPENING
Mirallas passes up the best chance of the half, scuffing his shot after Osman's instinctive header gave him a clear sight of the Chelsea goal. At the other end, Hazard shoots straight at Howard.
45' BLOCKED AGAIN
Everton break with purpose but McCarthy, who was the spearhead of the attack, sees his low strike blocked.
43' LAMPARD GOES DOWN
Lampard is feeling the after-effects of a firm but fair tackle by Baines. It appears he could have hurt his right knee, though not seriously.
41' TERRY HEADS WIDE
Willian shoots from long range, but it deflects off the heel of Baines for a Chelsea corner. Terry heads wide from the set-piece.
39' EPL'S TOP TEN
Earlier we asked you to name the other seven players who formed the top ten in terms of most Premier League appearances. They are: Gary Speed, Emile Heskey, Gareth Barry, Jamie Carragher, Phil Neville, Mark Schwarzer and Sol Campbell. Well done if you got them all.
37' HOWARD TO THE RESCUE
Eto'o escapes the attentions of Distin inside the penalty area, but his fierce shot is blocked by Howard.
35' HEADER GOES WIDE
A slick Everton short corner routine creates a headed chance for Jagielka, but his flicked effort slides well wide of the post.
33' TAME HEADER
Willian picks out Lampard with a long diagonal pass to the back post, but Chelsea's record scorer heads tamely out for a goal-kick.
30' RARE SHOT ON TARGET
An Ivanovic effort blocked by Pienaar rolls out to Azpiliceuta, who sees a low shot easily gathered by Howard.
29' SCRAMBLED AWAY
A downward header from Eto'o almost falls to Willian in the Chelsea area, but Everton scramble the ball clear.
28' HAZARD CLIPPED
Hazard is slow to get up after being clipped by McCarthy, but referee Probert sees nothing wrong with the challenge. The home crowd are getting a little restless here.
26' PREMIER LEAGUE LEGEND
Frank Lampard makes his 572nd Premier League appearance today, joining David James as second of all-time behind Ryan Giggs. Can you come up with the other seven players who make up the top ten? We'll bring you the answer in a few minutes.
23' SLICED CLEARANCE
Tim Howard in the Everton goal must have put his boots on the wrong feet. That's two routine clearances now he has sliced straight into touch.
21' SLOW STARTERS
It has been a sluggish start so far from the league leaders. Everton are actually looking the better side.
19' PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Azpilicueta has already committed three fouls in the early going. One more and Mr Probert will likely have his book out again.
18' SHOT BLOCKED
Mirallas plays an impressive one-two with Naismith and has a clear sight of goal. The shot is blocked by Cahill, but it might have been going wide.
16' POOR CONTROL
Oscar escapes the attentions of Jagielka but fails to bring down cleanly a long diagonal pass from Ivanovic and the chance is gone.
13' FINE SAVE
A searing shot from Osman is turned over the bar acrobatically by Cech. That 25-yard effort came out of nothing.
12' GLORIOUS DAY
It's a glorious day in London today, just about shirt-sleeve weather if you're in the sun. Temperature at game time is 11 degrees Celsius, 51 degrees Fahrenheit. It's not quite Florida, agreed, but it's warm enough.
10' CHELSEA BOOKING
Oscar is booked for a high challenge on Naismith. That's very out of character by the Brazilian.
9' IMPORTANT CLEARANCE
Everton threaten, Baines getting free down the left and looking for the unmarked Coleman. A timely clearance from Azpilicueta averts the danger.
6' PAYING THEIR TRIBUTES
There was a minute's applause before kick-off to mark the passing of the English football legend, Sir Tom Finney.
5' FIRST SHOT GOES WIDE
Chelsea break quickly from an Everton free-kick. Hazard leads the charge and finds Willian, who drags a shot wide of the post.
4' CHANGE FOR EVERTON
Lacina Traore tweaked a leg muscle in the warm-up, so Steven Naismith starts for Everton.
3' EARLY CHELSEA PRESSURE
Chelsea win two early corners, but neither cause the visitors any concerns.
2' LATE START
We're a little late kicking off, partly because of the tribute to Sir Tom Finney and partly because the host broadcaster's cameraman was more eager to get shots from the centre circle than leave the pitch. “Do you want a game?,” Frank Lampard asks.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
Chelsea make two changes to the side that drew with West Brom in their last league game, John Terry replacing David Luiz and Frank Lampard replacing Ramires, who drops to the bench. Lacina Traore replaces Steven Naismith in Everton's only change.

0' PREVIEW
Leaders Chelsea have the chance to put pressure on their title rivals as they welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge in Saturday's early kick-off in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho's men can open up a four-point gap over second-placed Arsenal, who host Sunderland later in the day. You wouldn't bet against it, either. Everton have fallen off the pace in recent weeks and have failed to win any of their last four away from home. They were outplayed at Liverpool at the end of last month, but probably more worrying was their defeat at Tottenham last time out, where they were the better side but still managed to find a way to lose the game. Mourinho was very curt in his pre-match press conference on Friday, answering many of the questions put to him in monosyllables. Having ruffled the feathers of rival bosses Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini in recent weeks, perhaps he was upset not to be able to find anything critical to say about Everton manager Roberto Martinez, arguably the nicest guy in the Premier League. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
With 12 goals from midfield, Eden Hazard has two more than strikers Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres combined and has been the creative force behind Chelsea's rise to the top in recent weeks. But what's become of mercurial Brazilian Oscar? Since the middle of October he has only contributed at least a goal or an assist in three Premier League matches, which is unacceptable for a player of his talent. Kevin Mirallas has caught the eye in recent weeks for Everton having been asked to play in a more advanced position in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku. But the Toffees' player of the year could arguably end up being Seamus Coleman, who has five goals from right-back and is the highest scoring defender in the whole of the Premier League in the official EPL fantasy football game.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 53 wins to 49 by Everton and 47 games being drawn. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have 37 wins to 12 by Everton, with a further 12 meetings ending up all square. The first meeting between the sides this season on Sep. 14 saw Everton win 1-0 with a solitary goal from Steven Naismith on the stroke of half-time. Naismith was also on target in the corresponding match last season on May 19, cancelling out an early Juan Mata goal. Fernando Torres, though, had the last word as Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners. Everton's last win at the Bridge came on Nov. 26 1994, Paul Rideout getting the only goal. They have lost nine and drawn nine since.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea start the day top of the table with 57 points from 26 games, one clear of Arsenal. Everton are sixth with 45 points, eight behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool who occupy fourth spot and with it the final Champions League place. Jose Mourinho's men have the best home record in the top flight, with 35 points from a possible 39, one more than Liverpool and two more than Manchester City. Chelsea drew 1-1 at West Brom last time out in the league, extending their unbeaten run to 11 games since a 3-2 defeat at Stoke on Dec. 7. Everton have won four times away from home, but Roberto Martinez will be concerned by their low goal output on the road, with only 14 goals from 13 games. The Toffees have lost two of their last three, at Liverpool and Tottenham. Their only other away defeat came at Manchester City, highlighting the fact they need to learn to take points off the leading sides away from home if they are to make the jump to be considered legitimate challengers for a Champions League place.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Chelsea skipper John Terry is available again after missing three games due to a gluteal muscular strain (that's buttocks to you and I). David Luiz has a muscular problem and will not be risked ahead of Chelsea's Champions League game against Galatasaray on Wednesday. Everton have Steven Naismith available despite the Scotsman being taken off with a head injury against Swansea in the FA Cup last week. On-loan Romelu Lukaku (ankle) is close to full fitness but would not have been eligible to face his parent club. Bryan Oviedo, Darron Gibson and Aroune Kone are all sidelined.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Probert, who was appointed to the Select Group Referees List in 2007. The Gloucestershire official has shown just 13 yellow cards in his 11 Premier League outings so far this season, sending off two players, Sunderland defender John O'Shea and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard. That's a far cry from last season, when he administered 79 cautions and produced five red cards. Probert's assistants today are Stephen Child and Ron Ganfield, while Jon Moss is the fourth official.
