Newcastle United vs. Aston Villa
Minute Commentary
90' NEWCASTLE 1-0 ASTON VILLA
This one was a slow burner, but we got there in the end as far as the neutrals are concerned. The home fans are in absolute raptures after that last minute strike, but spare a thought for the Villa fans who watched their side battle for 90 minutes for no reward. The first half was largely controlled by the visitors, who countered with pace and numbers, and had a few half chances, such as Agbonlahor's long range shot that whistled over the bar, and El Ahmadi's two dangerous deliveries across the face of goal. However, it was the hosts who had the best opportunity of the first period, with Papiss Cisse skying a sitter from close range. It was beginning to look as though it wasn't the Magpies' day after Loic Remy missed an even better chance in the last few minutes as he hit the post with an open goal gaping, but he and his side finally found the breakthrough after poor defending from the otherwise outstanding Ron Vlaar and Nathan Baker allowed the returning French forward to rifle the ball home and steal the headlines. That win puts Alan Pardew' side up to eighth in the Premier League, and ends their miserable run of games at home without a victory, while Paul Lambert's men sit in 13th spot, still four points clear of safety. In sport there have to be winners and there have to be losers - both Newcastle and Aston Villa discovered that in completely contrasting ways this afternoon.
90' NEWCASTLE STEAL IT AT THE DEATH
That was pretty much the last kick of the game, and it's euphoria for Newcastle and agony for Aston Villa, as the hosts emerge triumphant, winning 1-0 at St James' Park.
90' NEWCASTLE 1-0 ASTON VILLA
Persistence pays off for Loic Remy, who has had a miserable day in front of goal - not anymore though! It's a bit scrappy, but the home fans don't care a jot. A deflected shot isn't dealt with in the centre of the box by Ron Vlaar or Nathan Baker, and Remy pounces, firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from the penalty spot. Alan Pardew can't control himself on the touchline, and who can blame him?
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
In the second minute of three added on, Loic Remy wins it for Newcastle! Jubilant scenes at St James' Park!
90' OFF THE POST
Unbelievable! How aren't Newcastle ahead?! A defensive error by Joe Bennett allows Luuk De Jong to nick the ball and pass it to Loic Remy in the centre of the area. The Frenchman has an open goal as Brad Guzan is stationed at his near post in an effort to stop De Jong, but under pressure from the sliding Nathan Baker, Remy hits the base of the far post. The Magpies can't buy a goal at the moment can they?
88' WASTE FROM VILLA
Newcastle are caught short at the back, and Gabriel Agbonlahor is put in down the inside channel, but Fabricio Coloccini stands him up. Christian Benteke is free at the back post, but Paul Dummett clears the ball before Agbonlahor's cross can reach him. That could have been so much more dangerous for the visitors.
85' DISALLOWED GOAL
The hosts have the ball in the net, but it won't count as Moussa Sissoko was a couple of yards offside when he squared the ball for Luuk De Jong to finish past Brad Guzan. The frustration continues to grow for the home fans.
83' SUB FOR VILLA
Paul Lambert makes a change, with Ryan Bertrand coming off to be replaced by Joe Bennett. Looking at replays of that penalty incident, it looks as though the Magpies have reason to complain, as Leandro Bacuna looked to deliberately handle the ball as Coloccini got away from him.
81' END TO END
Excitement central at St James' Park here as Aston Villa have a three-on-two situation with Christian Benteke on the ball, but he can't find Fabian Delph on the overlap. Newcastle break up the other end, with Remy forcing Guzan into a top drawer save before the fans are up in arms appealing for a penalty for a suspected handball. All of a sudden it's all happening in Newcastle.
79' AWFUL FREE-KICK
Ron Vlaar brings down Loic Remy on the edge of the box, but manages to avoid picking up a second yellow card. Yoan Gouffran is on set piece duties this time, but he puts in the worst effort of the lot, striking the ball into the bottom of the wall. Time is ticking away.
76' TAME SHOT
Loic Remy sizes up a free-kick from a central position after Gabriel Agbonlahor had felled Vurnon Anita, but his effort travels harmlessly past the far post. It's going to take something special or stupid to break the deadlock here you feel.
74' FRUSTRATION GROWS
You can really feel the tension inside St James' Park - it is palpable with every mishit pass or cross. This time it is Mathieu Debuchy's turn to annoy the expectant fans as his deep cross is easily collected by Brad Guzan under no pressure at all. Fifteen minutes remain for one of these two sides to find a winner.
72' NEWCASTLE CHANGE
In an effort to grab the winner, Alan Pardew decides to bring on Luuk De Jong for Papiss Cisse, who will be regretting not opening the scoring in the first half with a glorious opportunity. De Jong is still looking for his first goal in English football - what a time it would be to get it today.
69' TIOTE RECEIVES YELLOW
Cheick Tiote picks up the booking he has been asking for since the early stages of the first half with a blatant foul on Fabian Delph. Some people collect stamps, some collect coins, but the Ivorian midfielder has been making a sizeable collection of yellow cards in the last few years.
67' STRAIGHT AT GUZAN
Cheick Tiote receives the ball in space and shoots towards goal, but it is straight down the throat of Brad Guzan, who easily collects it. The American stopper has been Villa's most busy player in the second period, which tells you everything you need to know about how this game is going at the moment.
65' SIGHTS OF GOAL
Newcastle get two looks at Brad Guzan's goal in the space of two minutes. Firstly Mike Williamson, like he did in the first half, heads down a long free-kick and gets the ball back from Sissoko on the edge of the area. He is clearly in an adventurous mood, but his shot curls just over the bar, before Yoan Gouffran fires a volley miles over from a difficult angle.
63' BETTER FROM NEWCASTLE
The Magpies are starting to push Villa back now, and Mathieu Debuchy is again released into space down the right-hand side. His cross is booted clear by the ever-present Ron Vlaar, though. This is much better from the home side, and the visitors look like they might just be settling for a point here.
59' USING THE FLANKS
Alan Pardew's tactics look to be very simple here, as he has clearly told his team to spread the wall wide whenever they get the opportunity. They were very narrow in the first 45 minutes, but now they are getting Debuchy and Dummett forward regularly, and the former whips in a great cross here, but it is well cleared by Ryan Bertrand.
57' BETTER IN ALL AREAS
The home side are really starting to build some momentum here as they force a corner, and the noise levels inside the ground go up several notches. However, the delivery is cleared by the first man and Villa break through that man Agbonlahor. Newcastle do excellently to track back and prevent the counter from building a head of steam though, and once more the fans show their appreciation.
54' LOVELY PLAY
This has got St James Park' rocking though as the hosts manufacture the best move of the match. Sissoko and Cisse combine inside the area before the latter uses the overlapping Yoan Gouffran with an inch perfect pass. Gouffran takes a dig from the angle, but it flies just wide of Brad Guzan's far post. Great movement and sharp passing from the Magpies there - can that spur them into action?
51' STRONG DEFENDING
Not perturbed by his earlier caution, Ron Vlaar effortlessly sees off the attentions of Loic Remy as the two chase down a long ball, with the Dutchman shepherding it behind for a goal kick. Nothing for the home crowd to get excited about as of yet in this half.
48' QUIET START
If Newcastle are to grab a vital win here, you sense that the home crowd will have to really get behind them, as they always seem to do, but so far they have been very quiet - the type of awkward silence that normally occurs when you make a faux-pas at a dinner party.
46' SECOND HALF BEGINS
The visitors get the second 45 minutes started at St James' Park. I am not only expecting, but demanding a glut of goals in Newcastle.
45' NEWCASTLE 0-0 ASTON VILLA
There have been five goals in the Premier League so far this afternoon, but unfortunately they have all come at Anfield. That is not to say there haven't been chances at St James' Park, but it hasn't been the greatest half of football in all honesty. The Magpies started the brighter of the two, without really creating any opportunities, before the pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor got Aston Villa back into the match. Karim El Ahmadi twice whipped the ball across the corridor of uncertainty, but nobody had gambled, and Agbonlahor fired a vicious shot inches over Tim Krul's bar from range, but apart from that Villa haven't really looked like scoring. Neither did the hosts for that matter, until Loic Remy squared the ball for Papiss Cisse, who had the goal at his mercy from inside the area, but the out-of-form striker lifted his shot well over the bar, and the home crowd were left frustrated. Overall the visitors have had the better of it, and Paul Lambert will be very pleased with how unnervingly quiet St James' Park has been for the majority of the half, and he will be aiming to keep it that way. As for Alan Pardew's men, something will have to change in the second period if they are to find their first win on their own ground since their Boxing Day victory over nine-man Stoke.
45' NO GOALS AT HALF TIME
That was the last action of the first 45 minutes, as the half ends goalless at St James' Park.
45' SHOULD HAVE SCORED
What a boost that would have been for Newcastle heading into the break! Moussa Sissoko plays a lovely through ball for Loic Remy, who really ought to shoot but decides to hold it up instead. He does manage to find Papiss Cisse, six yards from goal with no one around him, but the Senegalese forward blazes his effort well over the bar. That should have been 1-0 to the Magpies, it really should.
45' THREE ADDED MINUTES
There will be three minutes of injury time at the end of this first half at St James' Park. Christian Benteke tries to force his side into a last gasp goal as he breaks clear down the right, but his low cross is well cleared by Paul Dummett.
44' FIRST BOOKING
Martin Atkinson puts his hand into his pocket for the first time today, and it is to brandish a yellow card in the direction of Ron Vlaar following a clumsy foul on the edge of the area by the Villa centre back. Loic Remy has a pop from the set piece, but he can't quite get enough bend on it and the ball flies inches past the far post without really ever looking like troubling Brad Guzan.
42' GOUFFRAN BACK ON
Yoan Gouffran looks OK to continue, and he is back in the action straight away as he picks up the ball on the angle of the Villa box. He tries to take on Bacuna, but he telegraphs his feint and the move breaks down.
40' GOUFFRAN HURT
Two players need treatment within the space of a couple of minutes - they're dropping like flies at St James' Park. Yoan Gouffran is invloved in an awkward looking challenge with Karim El Ahmadi, and he is now off being attended to by the magic sponge.
38' BAKER OFF THE PITCH
Nathan Baker is signalling for the trainer here, and he has to come off following a tangle with Loic Remy in the centre circle. After a brief bit of treatment the defender is back on the field, however.
36' AGBONLAHOR THREAT
Gabriel Agbonlarhor's pace is causing Newcastle all sorts of problems this afternoon. The English flyer again streams forward, with the opposition defenders scared to put a foot in, and his eventual shot is deflected behind by Fabricio Coloccini. He looks the most likely to open the scoring today, Agbonlahor.
32' CRUCIAL INTERVENTION
Newcastle nearly punish their opponents for playing an aimless long ball forward as they break through Papiss Cisse, who plays in Sissoko on the overlap. Sissoko forces a corner, and it eventually falls for Cisse at the back post. The striker takes on his man and tries to pull it back for Vurnon Anita to strike it, but Nathan Baker slides in to clear the danger.
29' MAGPIES STRUGGLING FOR FLUENCY
The hosts are not looking that alert at the back, and they aren't creating anything of note up top either. After a good opening ten minutes or so, Alan Pardew's side have really gone into their shell since. Aston Villa have yet to make the most of it by grabbing the opening goal, though.
26' BACUNA FINDING HIS RANGE
Cheick Tiote gives away a silly foul to give the visitors a free-kick in a promising position. Leandro Bacuna is behind it again, and this time he gets his effort on target, but Tim Krul always had it covered.
24' BASIC MISTAKES
Twice in quick succession Loic Remy tries to latch onto a through ball, but on both occasions he has set off far too early. Signs of rustiness for the returning striker, and the fans inside St James' Park are starting to become very frustrated.
22' CHANGE IN MOMENTUM
Earlier on it was Villa who were looking nervous at the back, but now the worm has turned and it is the Magpies who are looking decidedly anxious. Paul Lambert's side have been bossing the possession stats in the last ten minutes, and they've opportunities to score as well. Alan Pardew will be a little concerned with the way this match is going at present.
20' RASPING ATTEMPT
Gabriel Agbonlahor is starting to dictate this game for the visitors. He picks up a loose ball in the centre of Newcastle's half, runs at Williamson and Coloccini and unleashes a rocket of a shot that is desperately close to finding the top corner. I don't think Tim Krul had that one covered - what a goal it would have been.
17' COULD HAVE GONE ANYWHERE
The Villians twice show how dangerous they can be on the break as Gabriel Agbonlahor picks up possession from a cleared Newcastle set piece. The ball eventually finds its way towards Karim El Ahmadi on the right-hand side of the area, and his pull-back eludes everyone in the centre. Moments later El Ahmadi has the ball in a similar position, and his cross/shot is inches away from the sliding Andreas Weimann. Two huge sighs of relief from the home fans inside St James' Park.
15' SCUFFED SHOT
Textbook free-kick from the home side here as they lauch one long towards Mike Williamson, who neatly heads the ball into the direction of Loic Remy. The Magpies forward readies himself, but his eventual effort trickles well wide of the far post.
13' PERIOD OF PRESSURE
Aston Villa counter with pace through Andreas Weimann, who finds Christian Benteke in the box. The big Belgian has the chance to let fly, but he slips at the vital moment, and the move eventually breaks down, allowing Newcastle to bring the ball out.
9' KNOCKING ON THE DOOR
After both sides had made decent starts to this game, it is Newcastle who are starting to take control. Neat interplay between Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse forces Ron Vlaar to nervously give away a corner, before Cisse's curler from the angle is fumbled by Brad Guzan, who just about gets away with it. The Magpies are beginning to grab this match by the scruff of the neck, while the visitors have been looking very anxious in the last few minutes.
6' SELFISH FROM SISSOKO
Villa carelessly lose possession in their own half and Moussa Sissoko picks it up and charges towards goal. He has Mathieu Debuchy sprinting past him on the overlap in acres of space, but he elects to shoot, and it is blocked behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.
4' NOT A BAD EFFORT
The hosts give away a free-kick in a dangerous area, and Leandro Bacuna eyes it up - he can be lethal from these situations. The full-back gets his attempt up and over the wall, but it flies wide of Tim Krul's near post.
2' EARLY TESTER
Loic Remy picks the ball up in a central position, and he elects to take it wider before shooting, but Brad Guzan is down sharply to save his effort. What a boost it is for the Magpies to have the French striker back this afternoon.
1' START OF THE GAME
After a minute of applause for the great Sir Tom Finney, Newcastle get us under way. Inevitably, the atmosphere at St James' Park is electric.
0' FULL TEAMS
Newcastle: Krul, Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini, Dummett, Sissoko, Tiote, Anita, Gouffran, Remy, Cisse. Subs: Yanga-Mbiwa, Gosling, De Jong, Haidara, Elliot, Shola Ameobi, Steven Taylor. Aston Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Baker, Vlaar, Bertrand, Weimann, Westwood, Delph, El Ahmadi, Benteke, Agbonlahor. Subs: Bennett, Clark, Albrighton, Steer, Sylla, Tonev, Holt.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Loic Remy will return for the Magpies today after completing his three-match ban, while Fabricio Coloccini could return to the starting eleven for the first time since New Year's Day. Meanwhile, midfielder Cheick Tiote, who has missed the last two matches through injury, could also come back for the hosts. Andreas Weimann is likely to start for Villa after starting on the bench against Cardiff, while Marc Albrighton could make way for Karim El Ahmadi. However, Libor Kozak, Charles N'Zogbia and Jores Okore are long-term absentees for the visitors.
0' REF WATCH
Bradford's Martin Atkinson will be the man in the middle today, as he takes charge of his 29th game of the campaign. In his previous 28 matches, which have covered clashes in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, League Two and some international fixtures, the 42-year-old has brandished 88 bookings and sent off three players. He could be kept busy this afternoon as well, as Aston Villa have picked up 53 yellow cards so far this season, with Stoke the only side to have collected more. Atkinson's assistants at St James' Park will be Peter Kirkcup and Simon Long, while Neil Swarbrick will deputise as the fourth official.
0' ANOTHER AWAY DAY THRILLER FOR VILLA?
However bad Newcastle's home form has been as of late, the opposite can be said of Villa's away record. In total this season, Paul Lambert's side have picked up 60% of their points away from Villa Park, with their 2-1 loss to Everton at Goodison Park being the only defeat in their last four Premier League away fixtures. In fact, only Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea have better away records than the Villains so far in the campaign. However, in the last twelve matches in the top flight, they have picked up just three victories, so the visiting fans may want to reign in their optimism just a tad going into this one. Another victory on the road would be huge for Villa this afternoon, as they would gain some breathing space in the fight against the drop and put themselves in mid-table – not bad considering where they were this time last year.
0' MAGPIES FLYING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION
There was a time during the current campaign when it looked like Newcastle were on the up, and a place in the top six looked a distinct possibility. However, things have very much gone askew in the last few weeks, as Alan Pardew's side have suffered three straight losses, and have gone four games without a goal. While it is hardly realistic to claim they are in a crisis, with 13 points separating them from the relegation places, they have never gone five matches without finding the net in the top flight. In fact, the Magpies have been shut out in seven of their last eight fixtures in England's top division, and their home form hasn't been anything to brag about either – they have lost four on the spin on their own turf, the first time they have ever achieved this unwanted statistic. The home supporters would pay a lot of money to see a repeat of the 6-0 drubbing their team handed Villa back in August 2010 you would suspect.
0' PREVIEW
There is an awful lot on the line in this afternoon's match at St James' Park between Newcastle and Aston Villa. For the former, the future of their manager is in doubt, and rumours, which have been denied by the club's hierarchy, are circulating that Alan Pardew could lose his job if his side were to suffer defeat today. Meanwhile, just four points separate the Villains from the drop zone, and a victory in Newcastle would send them up to 11th, seven points adrift of danger. So, there is a lot of incentive in this one, and for the neutrals among us, that's just how we like it. However, if recent statistics are anything to go by, a win for the visitors looks to be a long shot. The Magpies are unbeaten in five league games against them, while Paul Lambert's men have lost four and drawn three of their last seven visits to Newcastle's ground. Can they end that hoodoo this afternoon, or will the hosts continue their good run against them? Join us here for live text commentary of this match at 15:00 to find out.
