Norwich City vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
If the game was on the dreary side on the first-half, it certainly made up for it in the second as Norwich took the lead just two minutes into the half, from a sweetly taken Robert Snodgrass finish, and then spent the rest of the game repelling an out-of-sorts Spurs attack, and threatening on several occasions to further their lead. Emmanuel Adebayor had two chances to equalise after breaking free of the last line of defence, but found John Ruddy quick to leave his line, while sub Roberto Soldado missed a great chance when blazing wide from close range. However, even as Spurs laid siege to the home side's goal in the last quarter of the game, the Canaries could've had more - Bradley Johnson rattled the crossbar from a free-kick, and Alexander Tetty failed to make contact with Gary Hooper's excellent cut back from the byline. Nevertheless, this is a huge victory for the Norfolk side, while Spurs now lose touch with the top four, now six points behind following Liverpool's win earlier today. Norwich, though, are four points clear of the drop and up to 14th. Massive.
That's it! A huge result for Norwich and Chris Hughton! Tottenham were not at the races but the Canaries deserve their three points after a committed performance.
Here's Spurs last chance then. Soldado flicks onto Adebayor down the left, then Townsend finds Bentaleb whose shot is blocked. It falls to Chadli on the edge of the area but his shot is deflected and no problem for Ruddy.
Chadli wants a penalty as he gets into the area and fires a cross-cum-shot over the bar. He stumbled as he hit but there was no contact from the nearby Bradley Johnson. John Ruddy is booked for time wasting as he steps up to take the goal kick. He'll not mind that.
A lot of Tottenham pressure here as the ball breaks to Dembele from a Vertonghen cross on the edge of the area; however a Norwich challenge comes flying in and nicks the ball off his toes. Spurs have a corner though as Dembele attacks down the right. It's a poor corner but Tottenham still come...
That should've been two as well! Gary Hooper is behind Dawson down the right flank and he gets to the by-line before squaring it to Tettey with Lloris beaten. Under pressure from a defender though the midfielder takes an air shot and misses the ball completely.
Nathan Redmond has a low drive from the edge of the area skew wide and then they make their final change. Wes Houlahan is on for the teenager.
So close from Bradley Johnson! And then so close from Nathan Redmond! First of all Johnson fires a thunderous free-kick from 25 yards off the underside off the crossbar, and then Redmond breaks through on the left and fires straight at Lloris with the goal at his mercy! That would've been game over.
Nathan Redmond again impresses and infuriates in equal measure, winning the ball off Naughton and breaking down the left. He then tries a jink too many though and loses the ball. However Norwich get it back and Snodgrass hits Hooper's lay off with venom from 25 yards, firing just over.
purs make their final change, with Danny Rose coming off for Andros Townsend.
Roberto Soldado wins a free-kick and takes it quickly, which leaves the Norwich defence scrambling. Lennon puts Chadli through on the left from the edge of the area but John Ruddy stands tall to block his shot. Another good piece of work from the Norwich goalie.
Free-kick to Norwich after Russell Martin pounces on Dembele's loose ball and charges up the right before finding Hooper. There's a bit of back and forth between the pair of them before the striker's felled nearly 25 yards out to the right of Lloris' goal. Vertonghen's booked for it and Snodgrass isn't far away with a curling left-footed shot that's just wide of the right-hand post.
Corner for Tottenham on the left to be taken by Kyle Naughton, but it's poor and Bradley Johnson clears it with his head. The break's on but there's a break down in communication and Nathan Redmond loses it.
Substitution for Norwich. Ricky van Wolfswinkel is coming off to be replaced by Gary Hooper. Hooper was rejected by Spurs as a trainee aged 14; here's a chance for him to prove them wrong.
Tottenham have stepped things up in the past five minutes and they fashion another chance as Nacer Chadli gets down the left and crosses the ball in from near the byline towards Adebayor. The rangey African can't get good contact on the ball though under pressure from Sebastian Bassong, and it's out for a goal kick.
Soldado again has a chance to level things up, as he gets on the end of Aaron Lennon's run and cross from the right; however he again can't get his effort on target, although in fairness to him, the ball was a little behind him as he went for the header.
Oh dear oh dear. Like Van Wolfswinkel at the other end, Soldado is a man short of confidence. A lovely weighted ball through from Adebayor on the edge of the area puts the number nine in on the right, but the Spaniard can't even hit the target from such close range.
Again John Ruddy times his run to perfection as Emmanuel Adebayor's first touch from Paulinho's through ball takes it slightly too far ahead of him in the Norwich penalty area, allowing it to be smothered. Good stuff from the stopper. Roberto Soldado - one goal from open play all season - is on to try and turn this round for Spurs. He replaces Paulinho.
Robert Snodgrass fancies a second and he again cuts inside from the right, before firing a powerful left-footed shot that Hugo Lloris has to tip away.
Nathan Redmond shows what he can do - and also what he can't. He jinks inside on the left, leaving Naughton in bits, but then fires horribly wide with his right foot. Up the other end and Adebayor has broken through but John Ruddy times his dash from his line perfectly to smother the ball - this game's starting to wake up finally!
You'd have to say it's still Norwich who look like they're going to score next, attacking at pace each time they nick the ball of their opponents. Bradley Johnson finds space on the left, but his first attempt at a cross from deep is blocked, and his second is beyond any forwards and runs through to Lloris. Danny Rose attempts to surge up the other end from his own half but his ball for Adebayor is hopeless.
Threatening from Spurs as Paulinho finds Adebayor who lays it off on the left to Chadli. However the wide man dithers and his eventual cross in is deflected off his marker for a corner. Norwich manage to deal with Naughton's ball from the right and seek to break, but it's broken down by Spurs.
That could be a hugely important goal for Norwich in their battle to avoid the drop, and they're fighting hard for this still even with the lead. Spurs are still looking bereft of any real ideas.
That's the goal they deserved! Robert Snodgrass comes in from the right to get inside Danny Rose to pick up Bradley Johnson's through ball before guiding a low left-footed shot past Hugo Lloris from the edge of the area. If that doesn't wake Spurs up today, nothing will.
We're back under way here. Norwich playing from right to left; they'll be looking to continue the momentum they'd build up in the first-half.
Well it's pretty easy to summarise the first-half of this one. Norwich have been doing their usual thing, attacking with plenty of enthusiasm without ever really suggesting they're going to score, despite half chances for Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Sebastian Bassong. Spurs just haven't woken up, barely mustering a shot at goal and playing at a snail's pace. Sherwood has started with seven of the Dnipro line-up from Thursday and they look as tired as you'd expect. The score is 0-0 and I can tell you, it's exactly as dull as that scoreline would suggest.
...However Snodgrass can't create the same danger second time round and his corner from the left is cleared by Spurs. Half-time.
Vertonghen fouls Van Wolfswinkel on the right, nearly level with the penalty area. Snodgrass takes it with his left foot and Lloris somewhat unconvincingly palms it out the way of the onrushing Bradley Johnson. Corner Norwich...
Kyle Naughton crosses the ball in from the right, but it's comfortably taken by John Ruddy in the area.
The pattern of the game continues in its increasingly predictable way. Spurs amble up to the Norwich half, lose the ball, Norwich break up the other end, no one can provide the final killer ball there either. It's a bit like table football at the moment, but with a lot less goals.
Here's evidence of a striker out of form and confidence. Ricky van Wolfswinkel is played through and is one on one with Michael Dawson. He slows right up though and allows two other Spurs defenders to catch up with him, before losing the ball and fouling Vertonghen in an effort to win it back. Poor.
Back come Norwich, Bradley Johnson has a drive from range deflected for a corner on the right, and then the home side almost get lucky after Danny Rose unwittingly flicks on Snodgrass' ball in and it hits a couple of bodies before going out for a goal kick.
This is looking better from Spurs, with Danny Rose and Nacer Chadli threatening down the left. First Rose's cross causes problems for the Norwich defence, and then Chadli gets into the penalty area and to the by-line, his ball back across goal not finding a team mate. Dembele is then booked for throwing the ball away though.
Alexander Tettey smashes a horrible effort over from 25 yards; better is to come though as Robert Snodgrass skips down the right and then inside two men before having a left-footed drive blocked, Nathan Redmond's follow-up cross finding only the arms of Hugo Lloris. There's been plenty of endeavour from the relegation strugglers I'll say that.
A nice move on the left by Norwich sees Martin Olsson set free down the left wing. He cuts the ball back from the by-line but none of the arriving Noriwch players can make contact with the ball. If they had the net would've been bulging - but then Norwich aren't really into scoring goals are they?
Paulinho manages to get a shot on goal, receiving the ball under pressure in the penalty are and wriggling into some space, before hitting a right-footed effort over the bar.
The Norwich fans are certainly getting behind their side and, to their credit, the Canaries are trying to give them something to shout about, probing down both flanks. Spurs look like a side who've just come back from a European jaunt at the moment - seven of this starting line-up played against Dnipro on Thursday.
There's not been much coming from Spurs in attack as yet, although Aaron Lennon attempts to jink his way down to the byline on the right before putting in a cross. He hits the ball well beyond anyone in the penalty area though and Norwich break with it.
Norwich have a corner which Robert Snodgrass will take. Sebastian Bassong rises to meet it but heads it wide. That's the first thing of note to have happened in a good few minutes to be honest.
There's bad news for Spurs. Etienne Capou is limping off already and will be replaced by Nacer Chadli.
Norwich are trying to push the tempo but are lacking the quality to quite pull it off. That's proved again as Bradley Johnson spots Nathan Redmond's run down the right from midfield, but his cross-field ball is beyond even the pacy teenager.
No more chances since that Norwich corner, with the game settling down into a slightly slower pattern. Tottenham haven't quite found their passing range yet, although are playing patiently while they find it.
Norwich are making the early running and attack again down the right through Snodgrass. He lays the ball outside him to Martin Olsson, whose cross to the back post is met by Van Wolfswinkel. The forward can't get any power on the header back across goal though, and Lloris gathers easily.
Norwich win an early corner and there's a brief panic in the Spurs box as Ricky van Wolfswinkel tries to get on the end of Robert Snodgrass' cross from the left; the away side manage to clear though.
It's worth pointing out the current state of things as both sides slowly feel their way into the game: Liverpool's victory earlier today puts them six points clear of Spurs in fourth, they themselves five points clear of Manchester United. Norwich in 16th, two points off the relegation places but also two points off 12th.
There's a minute's applause at Carrow Road to celebrate the life of the late Sir Tom Finney, before the home side get us under way in their traditional yellow shirts with green sleeves, and green shorts. They're playing from left to right. Spurs are in their white shirts and dark blue shorts.
Here's some fighting talk from Tim Sherwood ahead of the match: "It is the priority of the club to win both – the place in the Champions League and the Europa League. We believe that we have a big enough squad to do that." He's made two changes to the team who won at Newcastle, with Michael Dawson and Danny Rose coming into the line-up. Norwich have made just one change to their West Ham line-up, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel starting up front.
Hugo Lloris, Kyle Naughton, Michael Dawson, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Etienne Capoue, Nabil Bentaleb, Paulinho, Aaron Lennon, Emmanuel Adebayor, Moussa Dembele. SUBSTITUTES: Brad Friedel, Ezekiel Fryers, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane, Roberto Soldado.
John Ruddy, Russell Martin, Joseph Yobo, Sebastien Bassong, Martin Olsson, Alexander Tettey, Bradley Johnson, Robert Snodgrass, Leroy Fer, Nathan Redmond, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. SUBSTITUTES: Mark Bunn, Steven Whittaker, Jonathan Howson, Gary Hooper, Anthony Pilkington, Wes Hoolahan, Johan Elmander.
Norwich's Jonny Howson could miss out after a recent back injury, with Chris Hughton's side also without Ryan Bennett, Jonas Gutierrez, Michael Turner and Elliott Bennett. For Tottenham, striker Emmanuel Adebayor is expected to play despite carrying a potential leg injury. He didn't play midweek, but is likely to return alongside Aaron Lennon, Kyle Walker and Hugo Lloris, all of whom also got a night off on Thursday.
Many moons ago, a then 20 year-old Tim Sherwood signed for Norwich and enjoyed three fruitful seasons in Norfolk before joining Blackburn in 1992. There won't be any sentimentality on display though as he brings his Spurs side to Carrow Road today with Champions League qualification hopes still burning brightly. A lacklustre display midweek away to Dnipro in the Europa League shouldn't be given too much thought, with only the lengthy distance travelled to make that game and back the only factor in how they might perform in this fixture. Other than that, Tottenham have responded well since their 5-1 drubbing at home to Manchester City at the end of January, drawing at Hull, beating fellow European spot rivals Everton in a crucial game, and dismantling Newcastle 4-0 at St. James's Park. A win today should be straightforward so you'd think.
In what is an absolutely crazy bottom half of the Premier League, the Canaries only sit three points off tenth position; however the problem is in what lies below them; currently in 16th place, they're only a point above the drop zone, with two sides below them having a game in hand over them. It's no secret that goal scoring has been the problem; Gary Hooper is their leading scorer with seven this season, but none of those have come in 2014, while club record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel has failed miserably on his first in the Premier League. Norwich's last outing, against West Ham, showed exactly what was wrong, with Hughton's side creating plenty of chances but failing to convert, then conceding two late Hammers' goals. More of that and they'll be for the drop for sure.
If you're reading this you're probably more than aware that we're at Carrow Road in Norwich this afternoon! Chris Hughton has had to contend with rumours that his bosses above him at Norwich City have already been approaching prospective replacements, and he was told in no uncertain terms – on Valentine's Day no less – that performances had to improve, by chief executive David McNally. However, Norwich haven't scored in six of their last ten games, and they come up against a Tottenham side averaging more than two goals a game under Tim Sherwood, and with 23 points from their ten games under their former midfielder, the visitors are in rude health.
