NEWCASTLE, England (AP) Newcastle's French contingent again proved crucial as it came from behind to earn a 4-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday and distance itself further from the Premier League relegation zone.

As Newcastle celebrated a self-designated "French Day" to honor the club's seven players from the country, Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye both scored after their compatriot Morgan Schneiderlin had put Southampton ahead in just the third minute.

Cabaye's penalty in the 67th made it 3-2 for the hosts, and Jos Hooiveld's own goal in the 79th then clinched a victory which puts Newcastle six points out of the drop zone.

Southampton remained three points out in 16th place.

Sissoko made it 1-1 in the 33rd, and Papiss Cisse put Newcastle ahead with a superb volley before the break. Rickie Lambert made it 2-2 in the 50th before Cabaye put the hosts ahead for good.
