Southampton beats Newcastle 2-0 in Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) Southampton kept a clean sheet in the Premier League for the first time this season in beating Newcastle 2-0 at St. Mary's Stadium on Sunday.

Midfielder Adam Lallana opened the scoring for the home side in the 34th minute when he turned a pass from Gaston Ramirez into the bottom left corner of the goal. Ramirez doubled the advantage in the 60th from close range to secure the win over former Southampton manager Alan Pardew's side.

The victory lifts Southampton out of the relegation zone and into 17th place with 11 points.

Newcastle, which has now lost three consecutive league games for the first time since 2008, remains 14th with 14 points.
