Poland vs. Greece
Minute Commentary
90' POLAND 1-1 GREECE
The final half hour may have lacked quality, but if every game in Euro 2012 is as entertaining as that then we'll be in for a stunning tournament. Poland were sensational in the opening half, and should have been more than one up at the break. However, Greece came out transformed, and the excellent substitute Dimitrios Salpigidis earned the penalty and levelled the numbers to ten-a-side. Greece seemed the happier with the result at the final whistle, but having missed a penalty and had a key centre-back sent off it's hard to see why. Poland felt that a win here would have given them a great chance of progressing, but will now need a win in at least one of their remaining games against the Czech Republic and Russia in order to progress. In Warsaw it finished Poland 1, Greece 1.
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes to end the game at 1-1.
90' SO CLOSE TO AN OWN GOAL
A cross fizzed into the box by Jakub Blaszczykowski is deflected fractionally over the bar. That could so easily have been an own goal!
88' TIME TICKING AWAY
The crowd are hushed as the game inches closer towards full-time. On the evidence of what we saw in the first half, Greece will be delighted with the score-line as it stands, but both teams will still have a reasonable chance of progressing with a point in the bag.
85' POLAND CONTINUE TO PRESS
Inspired by their talismanic centre-forward Robert Lewandowski, Poland are pushing for the winner but are struggling to create chances. The second half has far from lived up to the quality of the first, and it's all a bit nervy as both teams look to try and avoid defeat as much as win the game.
84' INTO THE SIDE-NETTING
Robert Lewandowski goes for goal from out on the corner of the box, but his shot goes just the wrong side of the near post.
82' COMFORTABLE SAVE
Eugen Polanski tees himself up for a shot from distance, but it's easy for Kostas Chalkias to get down and smother. Poland are lacking ideas and that early burst has long disappeared.
79' WILD SHOT BY SAMARAS
Georgios Samaras has a sight of goal outside the box, but his composure lets him down again and his effort flies well over the bar.
75' BIG IMPACT OFF THE BENCH
Dimitrios Salpigidis has been superb since coming on, and a lovely bit of skill sets up another shot from distance - although Vasilis Torosidis can't keep it down.
73' JUST OFFSIDE!
Greece have been a different team in the second half, and Dimitrios Salpigidis thinks he's given his team the lead with a tap-in... only to be denied by the linesman's flag. It's a close call but the correct one.
70' PENALTY SAVED!
What an introduction! Lukasz Piszczek comes on to face a penalty, and promptly saves Giorgos Karagounis' spot-kick. Stunning scenes in Warsaw!
68' RED CARD!
It's all going wrong for Poland! Wojciech Szczesny comes out and gets nowhere near the ball, taking down Dimitrios Salpigidis. The referee has no option but to show a red card, and it's a penalty to Greece!
67' GREEK CHANGE
Theofanis Gekas is withdrawn and on comes a midfielder to shore things up.
65' LULL IN PROCEEDINGS
Poland are struggling to carve out decent chances, while Greece are content with playing deep and punting the ball long to the front players. It's all a bit frustrating.
62' WHAT A CHANCE!
A lovely dinked ball into the box falls into the path of Georgios Samaras in behind the defence. He waits for the ball far too long, and rushes his final shot. That was a great chance!
59' PRESSURE ON POLAND
They were clearly the better team in the first half, but at 1-1 and faced with a Greek side defending in numbers, Poland will be starting to feel the heat.
56' GETTING PHYSICAL
That goal is perfect for Greece as it means they can sit back in their banks of four and try and block out Poland. On first evidence they're taking that idea a bit literally, and the referee may be getting busy if the heavy tackles continue.
53' YELLOW CARD
The veteran midfielder Giorgos Karagounis is trying to put himself about, but can't quite keep up with the pace of the game and picks up a yellow card for a cynical handball on the break.
50' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Greece have shown nothing all game, but one glimpse of goal and they are right back in it! Wojciech Szczesny gets nowhere near a cross into the box, and the loose ball is hammered home by Dimitrios Salpigidis. 1-1!
50' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Greece grab a goal out of nothing to make it 1-1!
47' OVER THE BAR!
Poland carry on where they left off and Robert Lewandowski gets another sight of goal. Pushed out wide onto his right foot, he still manages to get a shot away but can't keep it down.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half is back underway in Warsaw, and Greece have made a change - bringing on Dimitrios Salpigidis for Sotiris Ninis. It's not a change that promises a change of tactics by the Greeks!
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes at the end of a fascinating first 45 minutes of the tournament. Poland were superb for the opening half hour and fully deserve the 1-0 lead handed to them by Robert Lewandowski, but Greece will rightly feel hard-done-by over the sending off. It should be spicy in the second half!
44' GREECE ARE FURIOUS!
Already fuming over the sending off, Greece's anger is compounded as the referee fails to award a penalty for a possible handball and follows it straight up with a booking for Jose Holebas on the break. The Greeks need to calm down and make sure they aren't any more men light at the interval!
43' RED CARD!
Sokratis Papastathopoulos is shown a second yellow and has to leave the field. It's a harsh second booking, shown for a block on Rafal Murawski who was already slipping, and when you add that to the first yellow it's an absurdly harsh red.
43' GOING TO PLAN FOR POLAND
As the first half of their opening game draws towards a close, things are going pretty much exactly to plan for Poland!
40' SHAKY GOALKEEPING
Kostas Chalkias has been all over the place with crosses into his area, and his punch from the corner is far from convincing.
39' A CAPTAIN'S EXAMPLE
Jakub Blaszczykowski does brilliantly to chase down a lost cause and win the ball deep in the Greece half of the pitch. He turns down the easy pass for a cross towards Robert Lewandowski, but it's deflected behind for a corner.
36' FLASHED WIDE BY PERQUIS
Greece just aren't picking up the second ball in their own area, and this time the ball falls to Damien Perquis... only for the centre-back to lash a decent chance wide. That could easily have been 2-0, and Poland will certainly want to convert their creative dominance into more goals to give them a cushion at the break.
35' ENFORCED CHANGE
Kyriakos Papadopoulos comes on for the injured Avraam Papadopoulos.
34' YELLOW CARD
The first yellow card of the game is shown to Sokratis Papastathopoulos and you have to say it's extremely harsh. The defender goes up to challenge Robert Lewandowski in the air and the two clash, but there's little in it to justify a booking.
32' GAME SETTLES DOWN
Greece have sorted themselves out at the back and the pressure from Poland is starting to ease. That being said, there's still nothing in the way of obvious goal threat from the team in blue.
28' GREECE FIND THEIR FEET
For the first time in the game Greece manage to keep hold of the ball for a couple of minutes, and they get their reward with a free-kick out wide. The set-piece is forced to be retaken after a spot of pushing in the box, but it comes to nothing and Poland surge back into the Greek half.
25' EXCELLENT REFEREEING
The Spanish official is letting an awful lot go, and it's keeping the game flowing nicely. There was always a danger that this game would get a little stop-start, so credit has to go to the referee for making it a great game to watch so far.
23' A LITTLE OPTIMISTIC
Konstantinos Katsouranis goes for goal from distance, but it drifts harmlessly wide of Wojciech Szczesny's far post. Poland won't be too worried if Greece are forced to resort to efforts like that!
21' COMPOSED IN POSSESSION
The contrast between the two teams couldn't be greater at this stage. Greece are scrapping around desperately searching for the ball, but when they win it just can't string some passes together. Meanwhile Poland are stroking the ball around beautifully, and some of the link-up play in the final third is top-drawer.
19' WHAT AN ATMOSPHERE!
The party has well and truly started in Warsaw! Tens of thousands of red and white scarves are being swirled in the air as Poland celebrate the perfect start to the tournament.
17' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
It's a goal for Poland... made in Dortmund. Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek tore Greece to pieces yet again down the right, and the full-back's cross found the head of Robert Lewandowski. The goalkeeper got nowhere near the ball and Lewandowski's classy headed finish gave the covering defenders no chance. 1-0 Poland!
16' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Poland score the opening goal of Euro 2012!
14' POLAND WELL ON TOP
There's been some slick stuff from Poland at the start of this game, and they unlock a usually stubborn Greek defence yet again down the right. Lukasz Piszczek finds himself in acres of space in behind the defence, but couldn't pick out Robert Lewandowski in the centre. That really should have been a better final ball – it would have been a tap-in!
12' DECENT CHANCE GOES BEGGING
A loose ball falls to Poland skipper Jakub Blaszczykowski inside the box, but he can't get over the ball and skies his effort over the bar.
11' WIDE BY GEKAS
It will come as little surprise that the first effort on goal from Greece comes through a set-piece. Theofanis Gekas rises well, but his header was never on target.
10' HUMID CONDITIONS
With the roof shut it's cranking up the temperature inside the stadium, which may be testing for the players of both teams. The sweat on the brows of the supporters should tell you how humid it is.
7' GREECE STRUGGLING TO GET OUT
Greece have seen so little of the ball that they've barely got out of their own half in the opening minutes. Theofanis Gekas is completely isolated up top, but you sense they won't be overly concerned so far.
4' ALL POLAND IN THE EARLY STAGES
The host nation have dominated in the opening minutes and very nearly take the lead. A ball into the box is played into the path of Robert Lewandowski, whose shot is blocked. Rafal Murawski follows up with a curling effort from outside of the box, forcing Kostas Chalkias into a smart save to tip the ball over.
2' EARLY GLIMPSE OF LEWANDOWSKI
Dortmund centre-forward Robert Lewandowski was one of the stars of the Bundesliga season, winning the league and cup double and scoring a hatful of goals along the way, and the striker gets an early touch of the ball on the shoulder of the last defender. The ref spots a foul in there somewhere, but it's a promising start for Poland.
1' KICK-OFF
Greece get Euro 2012 underway and the boos that ring around the National Stadium in Warsaw signal an early spell of possession for the 2004 champions.
0' ALL SET FOR KICK-OFF
The first anthems of the tournament have been belted out and we're all set for kick-off.
0' HERE COME THE TEAMS
The two teams emerge from the tunnel into an astonishing cauldron of noise. The roof is shut in Warsaw and it's certainly helping to add to the spine-tingling atmosphere. The home nation knows that a win here would give them a great chance of making the knockout stages of their own tournament.
0' OPENING CEREMONY
It's the start of a major tournament, so that means lots of regional dancing, some strange hats and a Chopin recital which apparently is going to morph into a dance anthem performed by a DJ in a strangely tacky-looking gold outfit. On the plus side, this whole ceremony only lasts for ten minutes and then we have a game of football.
0' GREECE TEAM NEWS
Greece are boosted by the news that Vasilis Torosidis has shaken off a knee injury and starts in defence. The good news for the neutral is that Sotiris Ninis has edged his way into starting line-up, which should give the team a bit more pace and creativity.
0' POLAND TEAM NEWS
The Polish line-up is as expected, with Robert Lewandowski up top on his own. Damien Perquis has recovered sufficiently from a fractured elbow to take his place in the centre of defence.
0' STAY TUNED
Stick around for breaking team news and live text commentary of the opening match in Warsaw.
0' THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Tonight's referee is Spaniard Carlos Velasco Carballo. The 41-year-old Madrid-born official has a reputation for allowing the game to flow, but Euro 2012 is his first taste of major tournament football so he will need to find his feet early in what promises to be a robust match.
0' THE GROUND
This game will be played at the brand-spanking new National Stadium in Warsaw. A spectacular 50,000 seater stadium designed in the colours of the Polish flag, it is a fitting venue to kick-start what promises to be a fantastic tournament.
0' GREECE SEARCH FOR SPIRIT OF 04
Dull yet incredibly effective on their route to the title in 2004, Greece are trying to play a slightly more expansive game at present and should pose a goal threat if they can get decent balls into their front three. However, that's a big ‘if', as the likely first-choice midfield lacks much in the way of creativity. A lot will be needed from youngsters Sotiris Ninis and Giannis Fetfatzidis, who have the flair and pace to trouble teams throughout the tournament, but may have to make their impact coming off the bench.
0' A PROMISING POLISH TEAM
Ranked the lowest of all 16 teams in the tournament, Poland could just surprise one or two people. With the familiar face of Wojciech Szczesny in behind a solid back-four and with two central midfielders sitting deep, the Poles will be a difficult side to break down. The two full-backs will be expected to get forward when in possession, and Lukasz Piszczek's partnership from club football with captain Jakub Blaszczykowski will be a danger down the right. With the two wingers cutting inside and Ludovic Obraniak trying to get into a traditional number ten role, Poland should create chances, and with in-form Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski up-front that should mean goals.
0' PREVIEW
It might not be an opening game match-up that will excite the neutrals on paper, but Poland against Greece has all the ingredients to be a fascinating game of football. Group A is arguably the weakest group in the tournament, giving hosts Poland a decent chance of progressing to the knockout stages, and that should add even more spice to a game that means so much to the home side. Both teams have a reputation for playing slightly defensive counter-attacking football, but there are some exiting options going forward in both squads which could well give us an unexpected treat at the start of the tournament.
0' SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE AIR
There's something special about the Euros. It was Denmark who produced the miraculous in 92. Then Greece in 2004. Will it be Poland in 2012? If the hosts are to pull off arguably the greatest shock in the history of European football then they'll need to get their tournament off to a good start – with a win against Greece in Warsaw tonight.
0' WELCOME TO EURO 2012!
The build-up and hype is over and Euro 2012 is finally here! 31 matches will be squeezed into the next three-and-a-half weeks as Europe's elite battle it out in a tournament that has provided so much fantastic entertainment over the years. Hosts Poland and Ukraine may have come in for some negative headlines in recent weeks, but just a little over 20 years after shaking off the shackles of Soviet control, these two beautiful Eastern European countries will be looking to make June 2012 one that will live long in the memory of football fans around the world.
