Holland vs. Denmark
Minute Commentary
90' HOLLAND 0 - 1 DENMARK
Kharkiv played host to an absolutely extraordinary game of football as Denmark beat Holland 1-0 to get the standout group of Euro 2012 off to a terrific start. The Dutch were in control for the majority of the match and missed a hatful of chances through Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but will feel that they should have had a penalty for handball late on. Denmark did little, but when they managed to get numbers into the final third it caused the Dutch defence problems, and Michael Krohn-Dehli produced the key moment of the game when he burst into the box and slotted home through the legs of Maarten Stekelenburg. Denmark deserve huge credit for a defensive performance that was encapsulated by the terrific performances of centre-backs Simon Kjaer and Daniel Agger, but Holland will struggle to have such an off-day in front of goal for the rest of the tournament. In Kharkiv it finished Holland 0, Denmark 1!
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes and the Dutch players fall to their knees. It's a result that throws Group B wide open and Denmark are rightly celebrating a famous win.
90' POOR FINAL BALL
Orange shirts stream forward, but Dirk Kuyt's cross fails to beat the first man and Holland's frustration continues.
90' WIDE OF THE POST!
A corner swings into the Denmark box, but a combination of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and John Heitinga fail to get an effort on target. Replays of that handball shout shows that it probably should have been a penalty.
88' NO PENALTY!
The Dutch are furious as the referee waves away their penalty appeals for a handball in the box. On first look it didn't look like there was much in it, but the reaction of the players suggests that Denmark may have got away with one there.
86' PERFECTLY-TIMED TACKLE
The excellent Simon Kjaer produces a brilliant sliding tackle to halt a Wesley Sneijder run and ensure that Denmark will have the ball for a crucial few seconds. Can they hang on?
84' ON COMES KUYT
Dirk Kuyt is on in place of Gregory van der Wiel as Holland make their final change. It's an extremely attacking one, with the coach in no doubt of the need to avoid defeat here, but the gaps on the break will be huge if Denmark can get hold of the ball.
82' DENMARK CHANGE
Tobias Mikkelsen replaces Dennis Rommedahl to give Denmark some fresh legs for the closing minutes of the game.
81' TIME RUNNING OUT
There will be chances for Holland, but with tricky games against Germany and Portugal to come they will want to stick two of them away before full-time. With the clock ticking past the 80 minute mark it's starting to get urgent for the Dutch!
79' ROBBEN GOES FOR GLORY
Arjen Robben has consistently taken the wrong option all game, and with the prolific Dutch forwards ready at the back post he opts instead to go for goal after cutting inside from the right. His shot is always going over, and the frustration from his team-mates is tangible.
78' SPACE ON THE COUNTER-ATTACK
The Netherlands look even more threatening since those changes, but the game is becoming stretched and Denmark will fancy their chances on the break. Simon Poulsen almost produces another moment of magic as he bursts forward, but is denied by a block on the edge of the area as he tries to slip in Nicklas Bendtner.
74' HUNTELAAR DENIED!
An absolute peach of a pass by Wesley Sneijder picks out the run of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and the striker does perfectly to cushion the ball, bring it into his path and look to dink it over the onrushing goalkeeper. Stephan Andersen does superbly to spread himself and deny the forward, and the referee blows for a foul on the keeper as Robin van Persie comes steaming in on the follow-up. It's astonishing that Holland still haven't found the net, but it remains Holland 0, Denmark 1.
72' INSTANT IMPACT
Rafael van der Vaart makes a contribution within moments of coming onto the field, sliding a dangerous cross right across the face of the goal. Not enough of his team-mates gamble to get on the end of it, and Denmark breathe a sigh of relief.
70' DOUBLE CHANGE
Holland have been trying to make changes for a few minutes, and finally decide to risk making them at a corner. On come Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael Van der Vaart, replacing the lively Ibrahim Afellay and Nigel De Jong. The defending from the set-piece is far from solid, but Denmark fail to take advantage as the ball fizzes across the box.
69' CLASSIC BENDTNER
He's got such talent, but Nicklas Bendtner continues to frustrate. Denmark break, and the big striker is given the ball by Dennis Rommedahl. Faced with the option of keeping the ball or sliding it down the line for Rommedahl, he does neither and gifts it straight to the defender.
68' CORNER COMES TO NOTHING
Denmark whip a corner in, but Ron Vlaar nips the ball off the head of Nicklas Bendtner and Holland clear.
66' YELLOW CARD
Mark van Bommel goes in hard and late on Niki Zimling and the referee has no option but to show the Dutch captain a yellow card.
62' ANOTHER CHANCE GOES BEGGING!
Holland record their 22nd attempt on goal, and it's a good one. Wesley Sneijder's cross in finds the head of Arjen Robben in a great position, but his header doesn't find the target. It's remarkable just how many decent chances Holland are missing here - but credit to Denmark for closing down quickly and forcing the mistakes.
61' THE FLAG IS UP
Heitinga gets up well at the back post to knock a header back into the danger area, but the defender had drifted into an offside position from Wesley Sneijder's free-kick and the linesman was alive to it.
59' SOLID DEFENDING ONCE AGAIN
Simon Kjaer has been excellent at the back for Denmark all game, and faced with Robin van Persie one-on-one down the inside left channel he does brilliantly to shepherd the striker away from danger and allow his colleagues the time to get back into position.
57' FRUSTRATION BUILDS
Holland are getting more and more frustrated as the chances continue to go begging, but the sight of the subs warming up may just focus the minds of some of the starting XI.
53' POULSEN PLAYING A BLINDER!
The Danish full-back had a big part to play in the goal, and his patience in twisting and turning inside the Dutch area almost creates another, only for his team-mates to fail to get a touch on the final ball across the face of the goal. A second goal for Denmark really would make this interesting!
51' FRACTIONALLY WIDE BY AFELLAY
Ibrahim Afellay doesn't quite make the perfect contact with his shot from range, but it's enough to beat a scrambling Stephan Andersen and bobbles just wide of the post.
50' SMART SAVE BY ANDERSEN
Mark van Bommel goes for goal from distance and his fizzing shot is palmed behind by Stephan Andersen. If anything the game is even more one-sided since the break, and the Dutch will feel that the equaliser is coming.
49' VAN PERSIE HAVING A SHOCKER!
It's set up perfectly for Robin van Persie again. This time he's slid into the Denmark box on his favoured left foot with the chance to hit it across the keeper, but he gets in a muddle and fails to even get a shot away. Will the real Van Persie please stand up!
47' DEFLECTED OVER
Arjen Robben looks to curl a shot into the far corner from just outside the box, but a horde of Danish defenders close him down and the ball is deflected over the bar. The corner is dealt with comfortably and the team in white clear their lines.
46' TRYING TO WALK IT IN
Holland are playing with a visibly higher tempo at the start of the second half, but it all gets a little too tight as Ibrahim Afellay looks to find Robin Van Persie inside a packed Denmark area.
46' SECOND HALF
Denmark get the second half underway, looking to hold on to their slender one-goal lead.
45' HALF-TIME
For the third game running at Euro 2012 the fans are certainly getting their money's worth. Holland have been all over Denmark, but haven't got their shooting boots on - wasting massive chances through Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie and hitting the post through the Munich winger. Denmark have had little of the ball in the final third, but look dangerous when they get it into their front three and take a shock lead into the break through Michael Krohn-Dehli's goal. It sets it up nicely for a second half that will have a massive say in the outcome of Group B.
42' VAN PERSIE FLUFFS HIS LINES
Preferred to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to spearhead Holland's attack, the pressure is on Robin van Persie to perform today... and he's just missed a bit of a sitter. Slid in on the right side of the box, the net was ready to bulge - but Van Persie's first touch was poor and his final shot never looked like testing Stephan Andersen.
41' KROHN-DEHLI HAS A POP
The Denmark goalscorer goes for a second from distance, but Maarten Stekelenburg gets across well to produce a sprawling stop. The underdogs are growing in confidence in Kharkiv!
39' QUEUING UP AT THE BACK POST
Dennis Rommedahl's cross finds two team-mates totally unmarked on the far side of the box, but they get in each other's way and Niki Zimling's skewed shot is cleared. These are worrying signs for Holland - they are wide open at the back!
38' OVER THE BAR!
Ibrahim Afellay's silky skills get him into space for a shot outside the box, but his effort doesn't dip in time and flies over the bar.
35' OFF THE POST!
A terrible clearance by Stephan Andersen gifts the ball to Arjen Robben deep inside the Denmark half. The Bayern Munich man has players free on either side of him, but goes for goal himself... and is denied by Andersen's right upright.
32' A THREAT ON THE BREAK
Denmark are seeing very little of the ball, but when they do get the chance to break it's causing the Holland defence some real problems. On this occasion Dennis Rommedahl's cross is deflected into the arms of Maarten Stekelenburg, but Bert Van Marwijk will be looking to sort out his defence pretty sharpish!
28' HEADED WIDE BY VLAAR
A corner swung into the box finds Ron Vlaar free at the front post, but his header glances across the face of goal and goes wide of Stephan Andersen's goal. That was a great chance, and to compound the Dutchman's disappointment he's also injured Ibrahim Afellay by clattering into him after the header.
27' NO PENALTY!
Simon Poulsen looked like he may have handled the ball in the box as he looked to launch a counter-attack there, and the Dutch certainly think he did. The officials disagree and the game continues.
26' GAME-CHANGER!
That goal came from the first really promising foray that Denmark have had in this game, but it's transformed the match. Holland were content to stroke the ball around at a slow tempo and ease themselves into positions in the final third, but that's going to have to change now.
24' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Simon Poulsen was given the freedom to maraud forward down the left, but there still looked to be little danger when Michael Krohn-Dehli received the ball midway inside the Dutch half. A clever dummy sold the first defender, but the cover was nowhere to be seen as Krohn-Dehli waltzed into the box and drilled a shot between the legs of Maarten Stekelenburg to open the scoring in Group B. 1-0 Denmark!
23' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's completely against the run of play, but Denmark have gone ahead through Michael Krohn-Dehli!
21' ALL HOLLAND
The team in that familiar all orange kit are in complete control of the game, but Denmark's tactic of sitting deep and frustrating their illustrious opponents is still working. It's extremely risky though, and you wonder if the Danes have a 'plan b' if Holland do manage to find the net in this first half.
19' MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Robin van Persie is disappointed not to get the decision as Daniel Agger raises a foot in the box to clear an Arjen Robben cross. It's hard to sympathise with the Dutchman there though - if refs start giving decisions like that then defenders might as well just call it a day!
17' MAJOR CHANCE GOES BEGGING!
Arjen Robben waltzes into space down the right and Holland have a three on two inside the box. However the final ball isn't good enough and some terrific last-ditch defending means that Denmark escape.
16' WASTE OF A CHANCE!
Dennis Rommedahl bursts in behind the Dutch back four, but his cross is too close to Maarten Stekelenburg and the keeper claims.
14' PREDICTABLE PATTERN
The game is developing as many would have expected - with Holland dominating possession but creating just half-chances in the face of an organised Danish defence.
12' POOR FREE-KICK
Holland win a free-kick in a very tempting area for Robin van Persie, but he slips as he goes to take it and can only find the wall. On the follow-up Wesley Sneijder has the chance to slide in the Arsenal striker, but his pass is too heavy and is cleared behind.
10' NO SUPPORT FOR SNEIJDER
A lovely dinked pass over the top finds the head of Wesley Sneijder inside the box. On the stretch, the Inter playmaker can't get the power on it to go for goal, so instead tries to flick the ball back into the centre... but nobody had gambled on getting up there with him.
8' INTO THE WALL!
Denmark win a free-kick in a dangerous position, but Christian Eriksen's attempt flies straight into the wall.
7' SUBDUED ATMOSPHERE
In contrast to the sensational noise generated in Warsaw yesterday, it's all a little sedate in the stands here. The fans are some way from the pitch, which doesn't help.
6' SHOULD HAVE SCORED!
Arjen Robben has switched out to the left and causes all sorts of problems with a jinking run and pull-back. The ball falls nicely to Robin van Persie inside the box, but he snatches at the shot once again and sends it wide.
4' DUTCH SHOW THEIR ATTACKING FLAIR
Ibrahim Afellay and Arjen Robben combine in a move that stretches the whole width of the pitch to set up Robin Van Persie, but the striker is given very little time and sends a snatched volley looping harmlessly over the bar.
2' EARLY CHANCE TO SHINE
Jetro Willems latches onto a loose ball inside the Denmark half and drills a powerful shot narrowly over the bar. It would have been some start for the 18-year-old had that flown in!
1' FIRST EFFORT ON GOAL
Denmark will be very strong from set-pieces today, and they get a first header in on goal from a long free-kick. Daniel Agger's flicked effort is comfortably saved by Maarten Stekelenburg.
1' KICK-OFF
Holland get the ball rolling in Ukraine for the first time in this tournament.
0' ALL SET FOR KICK-OFF
The two anthems have been sung and we're all set for kick-off.
0' HERE COME THE TEAMS
The two sides emerge from the tunnel in Kharkiv, where disappointingly there are a few empty seats in amongst the swathes of red and orange shirted supporters from western Europe.
0' TEAM NEWS
Both teams are as expected. Jetro Willems becomes the youngest ever player at European Championships just two weeks after making his debut for Holland, and alongside Ron Vlaar on the left side of the Dutch defence will have to settle immediately. Michael Krohn-Dehli and Dennis Rommedahl will play on the flanks in support of Nicklas Bendtner as predicted for Denmark.
0' THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE
The referee for this evening's game is Damir Skomina - the first Slovenian ever to officiate at a major international tournament. A fourth official in 2008, the now 35-year-old has taken charge of games in the Champions League knock-out stage in the last two seasons – including this season's Chelsea v Benfica second leg. After the rather shaky performance by the referee in the opening game of the tournament, the pressure will be on Skomina to ensure that attention isn't drawn to the officials once again.
0' THE GROUND
The Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv is known as the ‘spider arena' due to the support structure surrounding the stadium. The host ground for three of the matches in Group B, the Metalist Stadium is one of the smaller venues of the tournament but the beautiful city of Kharkiv should keep the fans happy to ensure a great atmosphere throughout the group stage.
0' NO PRESSURE ON EXCITING DANES
Few expect the Danes to feature in the latter stages, meaning the team go into the tournament with no pressure on them, but if they were to snatch a result this evening then it would throw the group wide open. The much maligned Nicklas Bendtner leads the line, but as a centre-forward who can hold the ball up he should be perfect to bring the most out of the two attacking wide players in the side. A solid defence will have its work cut out against a potent Dutch attacking line-up, but if Ajax playmaker Cristian Eriksen can find space to pull the strings then expect Denmark to impress.
0' TROUBLE AT THE BACK FOR HOLLAND
The Netherlands are a team of two halves. Going forward the Dutch have an embarrassment of riches, with Wesley Sneijder in the playmaker role and the electric Arjen Robben and Ibrahim Afellay expected to start in the wide positions of the attacking three. Up top Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar are two of the in-form strikers at the tournament. The problem for the Dutch is at the back. Injury looks likely to keep out Joris Mathijsen which will further damage an already weak back four, and Jetro Willems' lack of experience at left-back could be a real problem. The deficiencies in defence further complicate matters in central midfield. Van der Vaart was often used alongside Mark van Bommel in qualifying, but that is a risk in such a strong group here, while youngster Kevin Strootman would also be a gamble – meaning that Nigel de Jong is likely to feature, limiting the creativity in the centre of the park.
0' THE GROUP OF DEATH
All four teams in this group are in the top ten of the Fifa world rankings. Germany are the favourites of many to lift the title in Kiev, while Netherlands are expected to challenge once again after famously reaching the World Cup final in 2010. With Cristiano Ronaldo spearheading a side featuring plenty of top-class players, Portugal are considered the likeliest to cause an upset to the big two of the group, but Denmark qualified for Euro 2012 ahead of Portugal in their group.
0' HOLLAND V DENMARK
After a surprisingly entertaining opening day of Euro 2012, the focus shifts to the tournament's ‘group of death' – Group B. Holland and Denmark face off in the first game of the day, and with a host of attacking players on show it's one not to miss!
