A first game defeat leaves the Irish with the unenviable task of needing to take points off the mighty Spain and Italy in their next two games. They shot themselves in the foot a bit, having hit back through Sean St Ledger to cancel out Mario Mandzukic's second-minute opener, only to concede a soft goal on the stroke of half time when Stephen Ward inadvertently played in tormentor-in-chief Nikica Jelavic to restore the Croats' lead. You'd have thought Ireland would have learned from their first-half failings, but barely two minutes into the second half Mandzukic rose again to double his tally. The introduction of Jon Walters added another dimension to Ireland's otherwise predictable play, and they created some decent chances through Damien Duff and Keith Andrews, but you have to think that their chances of progressing have all-but gone after this.

Croatia's final change sees Tomislav Dujmovic on in place of Ivan Rakitic.

Well, they've had their chances. None as clear-cut as this one, though, with Keith Andrews again rising highest, only to head Damien Duff's pin-point corner wide of the left-hand post.

80' ANDREWS HEADER
The Boys in Green have certainly looked more effective with Jonathan Walters on the pitch. He just looks far more effective off the shoulder of the lone striker, pulling defenders this way and that to free up space on the flanks. Perfect example of that just now as Damien Duff collects and delivers for Keith Andrews, who draws a diving save from Stipe Pletikosa.
78' NOTHING GIVEN
Vedran Corluka stumbles under pressure from Shane Long in his own box, and appears to handle as he goes to ground. The Irish make their feelings heard, but it would have been very harsh had the referee given that.
77' NARROWLY WIDE
Almost the perfect end to a wonderfully-inventive move. Ivan Rakitic starts it, before Mario Mandzukic knocks out wide for Darijo Srna. Everyone expects a ball towards the back post, but instead it's cut back low for Rakitic, who bends narrowly wide with Given at full stretch.

Bad, bad call from the referee as Gordon Schildenfeld clatters Robbie Keane in the penalty area. The Irish striker took Glenn Whelan's dinked pass and immediately looked to roll his marker, who crudely chopped him down on the turn. How does he not give that?

Ireland move the ball patiently across the Croatia area, before John O'Shea spoons a disappointing ball into the arms of Stipe Pletikosa. Doesn't look fully-fit, the Sunderland defender.

Nightmare start to the half for the Irish. Ivan Perisic is given all the time in the world to pick out a team-mate and, while Mario Mandzukic beats his man and the keeper, the loose ball strikes the post and the back of SHAY GIVEN for a rather unfortunate own goal.

Ivan Perisic goes down in some pain after taking Glenn Whelan's flying knees to the square of his back. Can only assume those bones to be extremely sharp, judging by the Croat's reaction.

Up and running again in Poznan where Ireland trail Croatia 2-1.
45' HALF TIME
After bouncing back from Mario Mandzukic's second-minute header, the Irish paid the price for sitting far too deep at a crucial stage in the contest. Sure, there was a bit of luck about the way in which Croatia restored their lead, but they're good value for it after a bright and positive first-half performance. The concern for Ireland is that they've only threatened from set pieces.

Glenn Whelan goes into the book after catching Mario Mandzukic a shade late. Moments later, Croatia have the ball out wide with Ivan Perisic but Ivan Rakitic heads over.

Oh dear. Another corner does for the Irish, with Ward again at fault. Darijo Srna's initial cross is cleared only as far as Luka Modric, who rifles an effort goalwards. Ireland look to clear, but Ward can only swipe the ball into the path of NIKICA JELAVIC, and he simply lifts it over Shay Given from five yards out.

Stephen Ward's aimless ball is picked up by Ivan Perisic, but Ireland get men back - eight in total - before Ward atones at the expense of a Croatia corner.

Luka Modric has seen more and more of the ball in the last few minutes. On this occasion the Spurs man trades passes with Darijo Srna, before driving an effort straight at Shay Given from 20 yards.

The Trap will be reasonably pleased with his side's efforts so far. They've reacted brilliantly to that early goal and are doing a fine job against supposedly technically-superior opposition.

John O'Shea gets a vital touch to Ivan Rakitic's in-swinging free kick that looked destined for the head of either Mario Mandzukic or Nikica Jelavic. Superb delivery, that one.

Gordon Schildenfeld is penalised once again, this time for clambering over the top of Kevin Doyle. Not the most experienced at this level, the big centre back.

Gordon Schildenfeld gets absolutely nothing of the ball as Kevin Doyle attempts to exchange passes with Robbie Keane on the edge of the area, and the referee promptly signals for a free kick in a very promising position for Damien Duff.

ROI are giving it a go now, seeing a good bit of possession in front of Croatia left-back Ivan Strinic. Damien Duff's cross, though, is too high for Kevin Doyle.

The outcome of this one takes on extra significance after Group C heavyweights Italy and Spain played out a 1-1 draw earlier this evening. Both sides played some lovely stuff at times, and it's clear to see why they're favourites to progress.

Darijo Srna starts at right-back, with Vedran Corluka moving across to partner Gordon Schildenfeld at the heart of a back four that also includes left-back Ivan Strinic. Messrs Rakitic, Modric and Perisic are joined by Dynamo Kiev's holding midfielder Ognjen Vukojevic, but former Arsenal striker Eduardo has to settle for a place on the bench with Mario Mandzukic preferred alongside Nikica Jelavic up top. As ever, Stipe Pletikosa starts between the sticks.

Partial to a roaming run up the right-hand side, skipper Dario Srna is expected to feature further up the pitch rather than at right-back, adding to a potentially explosive midfield that's bound to create chances for the likes of Nikica Jelavic and Eduardo. Tottenham's Luka Modric has the lead role in the centre of the park, but there are some pretty impressive figures in the supporting roles. Borussia Dortmund's Ivan Perisic enjoyed a strong breakthrough campaign in the Bundesliga, while Sevilla's Ivan Rakitic made a near-faultless transition from German to Spanish football in La Liga.

Home to the famous ‘Poznan' celebration, the rebuilt Miejski is set to be awash with colour come kick-off. Around 40,000 fans are expected to swarm the arena which, a stone's throw from the Warta river, also boasts a retractable roof.

Dutchman Bjorn Kuipers brings bags of experience to the table, having overseen countless international and Champions League games over the years. The 39-year-old cast an eye over Ireland's second-leg clash against Estonia last November and has also taken charge of European finals at U17 and U20 levels.
0' FITNESS CONCERNS
ROI stopper Shay Given looks to have shaken off calf and knee problems, and defender John O'Shea is also expected to play, despite picking up an ankle injury on the final day of the Premier League season. Croatia boss Slaven Bilic has to do without the services of Bayern Munich striker Ivica Olic, Olympique Lyonnais centre-back Dejan Lovren and Hamburg midfielder Ivo Illicevic (all ruled out of the finals due to injury problems), but right-back Vedran Corluka is fit to start.

At 74 years and 85 days, Republic of Ireland gaffer Giovanni Trapattoni will become the oldest coach in European Championships history when his side take to the field later this evening. He'll be hoping to improve on his last run-out at the tournament when, as Italy manger, he didn't even make it past the group stages. Counterpart Slaven Bilic, meanwhile, will want to bow out with a bang having agreed to take charge of Lokomotiv Moscow after the finals. Bilic has lost just six of 59 matches during his spell as national coach, guiding the Croats to three major tournaments.
0' QUALIFICATION ROUTE
Both clubs needed a second bite at the cherry after finishing as runners-up in qualifying, with the Trap's ROI squad pipped to the post by Russia, and Croatia second to Greece. Still, the play-offs proved a doddle as Ireland thrashed Estonia 5-1 and Croatia overcame the Turks 3-0 on aggregate.

Ten years since they last delighted us on the big stage and 24 years since their last appearance at the European Championships, the Republic of Ireland are back. Few would begrudge the Boys in Green a run of luck after what they went through in missing out on the 2010 World Cup, but all that will be forgotten tonight. Over 20,000 Irish fans are expected to descend on Poznan as their side kick-start their EURO 2012 campaign, having never lost the opening game of a major tournament. They might need more than luck, though, with Spain, Italy and tonight's opponents Croatia all vying for a place in the last eight of the competition.
