Poland vs. Russia
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
In terms of suspense, drama and full-on spirit, heart and commitment, you'll see few better. A fascinating encounter ends one apiece and in truth it's a fair result. Russia edged the first half, showing more class and better movement off the ball, while the endearing Poles got by on close calls from set pieces at the other end. Dzagoev's opener silenced the hosts and for a while Russia threatened to pull further clear, but a moment of magic from skipper Jakub Blaszczykowski sent the Polish supporters into a frenzy and from then on the game could have gone either way. Neither keeper was unduly tested but it was end to end action for most of the night, with both sides looking more than capabale of making a lasting imprint on this tournament. Win their final matches and they'll be through to the quarters - on this evidence Euro 2012 would be a poorer place without either of them. Full time in Warsaw, Poland 1 Russia 1.
90' FULL TIME
The spoils are shared in Warsaw.
90' BLOCKED
And Brozek nearly gets on the end of the inswinger, but Russia get enough bodies in the way.
90' POLAND SUB
Well this is pretty bold. Striker Pawel Brozek replaces Ludovic Obraniak, who was lining up a right-wing free kick when his number went up. Obraniak is furious with his manager. Last chance coming up...
90' STUMBLE
Zhirkov stumbles at just the wrong moment when trying to pick out a team mate from the left by-line. Bad timing - that might be Russia's last chance.
90' ADDED TIME
We're into the first of three added minutes. Russia are on the attack.
88' SITTING BACK
Arshavin ambles down the right with the ball, almost unchallenged. Poland sit back in their two banks of four. It's a numbing conclusion to a humdinger of a match, but is there one final twist to come?
86' GONE QUIET
It's gone a bit quiet here, perhaps deceptively so, as if both sides are taking a point. It's far from quiet off the field though, with the noisy Poles continuing to sing their hearts out.
84' POLAND SUB
The impressive Polanski has given in to the knock he picked up a few minutes ago. Adam Matuszczyk is on for Poland.
83' NO WAY THROUGH
Boos and whistes from the fervent home support as Russia spray the ball around the Poland third, but the white shirts form a solid wall and there's no way through for Advocaat's men.
81' OBRANIAK SHOT
Another all-action move from the Poles on the counter, which culminates in a low Ludovic Obraniak shot. Too close to Malafeev, who makes a diving save.
79' RUSSIA SUB
Alan Dzagoev departs to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon midfielder Marat Izmailov.
79' BREATHER
Zhirkov and Polanski both stay grounded after going in hard for a 50-50. The physios are on and everyone can have a well-deserved breather. Polanski is booked for his side of the challenge.
76' MORE LIKELY
Poland are looking the more likely scorers at the moment. No chance of them sitting back and settling for a draw - it's three points they crave. Boenisch cuts inside from the right and hammers a hopeful effort over the bar.
75' BOOKING
Alan Dzagoev picks up a very soft booking for dissent after disagreeing with Mr Stark's decision not to give him a free kick. Daft.
74' IMPACT
And substitute Adrian Mierzejewski looks to make an instant impact, sending a low left-footer rolling past the post from 20 yards.
73' POLAND SUB
Poland also make their first change. Dariusz Dudka off, Adrian Mierzejewski on. That's an attacking change.
71' RUSSIA SUB
Here comes an inevitable Russia change, with Roman Pavlyuchenko replacing the hard-working and undoubtedly skilful but still goal-shy Kerzhakov.
71' ANYONE'S GUESS
We're being spoilt here in Warsaw. The game continues to flow from one end to the other and it's anyone's guess as to who will conquer. Russia have the experience and the majestic movement, but Poland have a high-octane game with bucket-loads of spirit to go with it. Fantastic match.
69' POLANSKI SHOT
Malafeev's turn to shine now, with a solid block from Polanski's drive.
68' DZAGOEV CHANCE
That man Dzagoev nearly notches his fourth of the tournament, but Tyton makes a smart low save from the Russian's shot.
64' PERMUTATIONS
As things stand the Russians have four points, Czech Republic three, Poland two and Greece one. So both Russia and the Poles would have their fates in their own hands, with victories on Sunday ensuring progression to the quarter finals.
62' RACKET
The home fans are making a right racket now. Wonderful atmosphere in Warsaw - they think their team can win this.
60' BOOKINGS
Bit of a flash point as Denisov reacts badly to a Lewandowski tackle with a few handbags. He picks up a booking, as does Lewandowski for the original challenge.
57' POLAND 1-1 RUSSIA
The wide open five-a-side nature of this second half was bound to yield a goal eventually, and here it is from captain JAKUB BLASZCZYKOWSKI. It's a brilliant run and finish - he cuts inside from the right, past Zhirkov, before drilling into the corner left-footed. That's one of the goals of the tournament so far, and a magical moment for around 40,000 Poles in the stadium. Warsaw erupts.
55' SECOND STRIKER
Yuri Zhirkov is practically playing as a second striker here. Just as he did in 2008 before Chelsea snapped him up (ditto Arshavin and Arsenal), Zhirkov is looking like a world beater. Why on earth those two flopped in the Premier League, I do not know. Wonderful to see them back to their best though.
53' END TO END
It's end to end action in Warsaw. Both defences are being stretched to the limit.
52' ARSHAVIN SHOT
Russia know they probably need a second goal here, which is making for a fascinating encounter. Arshavin slices wide when well placed.
51' BRAVE
Brave goalkeeping from Vyacheslav Malafeev who puts his face in harm's way to punch a cross clear with Lewandowski's boot looking to sidefoot home.
50' HESITANT
Great opportunity for the gallivanting Zhirkov to set up a second for Russia. He hesitates, though, after reaching the left by-line, with his eventual cut-back intercepted. An early cross there to one of three waiting team mates and that was surely 2-0.
47' CHANCES
Chance inside 50 seconds for the Poles. Polanski feeds Lewandowski who races towards the six-yard box and moves wide of the diving Malafeev, but the keeper has tightened the angle and Lewandowski can't squeeze it home. Two corners follow, the second of which yields an unchallenged Perquis header over the bar. Poland have come racing out of the blocks.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back playing in Warsaw, with both XIs unchanged.
45' HALF TIME
Russia haven't been at their free-flowing best but they still look very strong indeed. And, as boisterous as Poland have looked, Advocaat's side have dealt with all they've had thrown at them. Great game in Warsaw and plenty to come after the break.
45' NO PEN
Dzagoev thinks he's been shoved in the box but the referee sees it differently and awards Poland a free kick. Not sure about that one, looked pretty 50-50.
43' AUDACIOUS
Audacious from Zhirkov who volleys a deep Arshavin corner towards goal, but it's wide of Tyton's post. Russia are flowing with confidence, which is pretty ominous for the hosts. They need that half time whistle to hurry up.
42' CUT OUT
Kerzhakov is getting plenty of joy from these Poland defenders. He has to wait for support this time and by the time it comes Marcin Wasilewski is able to get back and concede a corner.
39' SNAP SHOT
Powerful snap shot from Jakub Blaszczykowski but it's a fairly straightforward save for Malafeev, who has looked very solid. Good response from Poland.
38' TENTATIVE
Tentative defending cost the Poles dearly there, but in truth the goal had been coming. Russia had been in charge for ten minutes or so.
37' POLAND 0-1 RUSSIA
He's done it again - ALAN DZAGOEV has his third goal of the tournament, from just 127 minutes of football. Andrei Arshavin makes it with a come-and-get-me free kick from the left, which Dzagoev flicks past a helpless Tyton with his shoulder. Advantage Russia.
34' DANGER
Roman Shirokov is given room to feed another Kerzhakov run with a low through ball. It's too strong, again, but the danger is clear for Poland. Kerzhakov is brilliant off the ball. Just a shame about his finishing, but that'll change soon if Poland don't tighten up.
31' POSSESSION
Good spell of possession for the Russians, but they do little with it and Poland can clear their lines. Their play hasn't been as incisive as it was the other night.
28' HIGH AND WIDE
He's no shrinking violet, Kerzhakov, you can't deny that. The goal-shy forward cuts in menacingly from the right before shanking a 25-yarder high and wide.
27' ACROSS GOAL
Poland have had the best chances but Russia look very dangerous in the final third. Kerzhakov drills a teasing ball across goal which Arshavin can't quite reach.
26' PINPOINT
Ludovic Obraniak's pinpoint cross is nodded into Malafeev's arms by Marcin Wasilewski.
25' KERZHAKOV HEADER
Aleksandr Kerzhakov heads an Arshavin cross comfortably wide of the post. It's like there's a force field around the goal whenever Kerzhakov gets anywhere near it. He just can't find the target.
24' CUT OUT
Anyukov gets in a late sliding challenge to cut out a dangerous Jakub Blaszczykowski cross. Poland are playing with great expression and freedom. No signs of them feeling the burden of beings hosts.
22' FAVOURITES
I think it's safe to say we're watching the best two teams in Group A. Provided they win their final fixtures, with Poland facing Czech Republic and Russia taking on Greece, a draw would suit both of them nicely here.
21' CORNER
More pressure from the hosts as Obraniak swings in a deep corner towards centre half Marcin Wasilewski, but he sends his header over the bar.
18' NO GOAL
Poland respond with the best move of the match, culminating in Eugen Polanski getting beyond the last man and finishing past Malafeev, but Poland's number seven is correctly flagged offside. Fantastic football from the Poles though. We've got a game on our hands here.
17' PENALISED
Alan Dzagoev, who scored twice against the Czechs, is allowed to turn 30 yards out. He looks up and tries to feed the overlapping Yuri Zhirkov in the box, but the former Chelsea man is penalised for a foul. Russia are playing some very nice stuff.
14' FINDING ROOM
Kerzhakov, as he did on Friday, is finding plenty of room off the last man. Twice in the past three minutes now he's been played into the penalty area - first he was flagged offside and on the second occasion he was denied by a good challenge.
11' THUNDERBOLT
What a hit this is from Robert Lewandowski. The Dortmund star, apparently being eyed up by Man United, shows Fergie what he can do by controlling the ball with his left thigh and then spanking a 20-yard volley just over the bar in the same movement. He's got quality written all over him, this guy. Not literally though. He's not that arrogant.
9' ENTERTAINING
Corner for Russia now - there's plenty to keep us entertained in the opening stages. Arshavin's inswinging is grabbed under his own bar by Greece penalty hero Przemyslaw Tyton.
8' WEAKNESS?
Boenisch rises high again to flick a corner goalwards, but it's too close to Malafeev. Set pieces look to be a weakness for Russia.
7' CHANCE
And suddenly the hosts fashion a great opportunity. An inswinging Ludovic Obraniak free kick from the right reaches defender Sebastian Boenisch, who sees the ball late and doesn't make great contact with his four-yard header, allowing Russia keeper Malafeev the chance to save. That's a big moment.
5' CORNER
Aleksandr Anyukov steams down the right and wins the first corner of the game for Russia. It's worked short and Arshavin's eventual cross is dealt with. Important moments for Poland here - they can't afford to concede an early goal.
4' ASSURED START
Russia have made the more assured start of the two sides. They'll be full of confidence from that thoroughly impressive win on Friday evening. Win tonight and Advocaat's side are in the quarter finals.
3' OVER-HIT
Arshavin, who looked back to his 2008 prime against the Czechs, nearly sends Aleksandr Kerzhakov clear with a curving through ball, but it's a smidge over-hit and Poland can regroup.
1' KICK OFF
Mr Stark blows his whistle and the hosts kick us off. Poland expects.
0' ANTHEMS
Boos aplenty for the Russian anthem as a giant flag reading We Are Russia moves slowly across the thousands of travelling fans. Pretty provacative stuff. The Polish anthem is given plenty of gusto, as you'd expect. Great scenes here.
0' TEAMS OUT
Warsaw has been whipped into an absolute frenzy ahead of this game and the atmosphere is reaching fever pitch now. It's quite a spectacle seeing the Poland fans in full flow.
0' LINE-UPS
Poland show two changes from their opening game, with Tyton in goal and Dariusz Dudka replacing Maciej Rybus in midfield. As expected, Russia are unchanged. Full line-ups: POLAND: Tyton, Piszczek, Wasilewski, Perquis, Boenisch, Dudka, Polanski, Blaszczykowski, Murawski, Obraniak, Lewandowski. RUSSIA: Malafeev, Aniukov, Berezutsky, Ignashevich, Zhirkov, Shirokov, Denisov, Zyryanov, Dzagoev, Kerzhakov, Arshavin.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
Tensions are already running high over this match, with fans from both countries clashing in Warsaw today as Russian supporters marched to mark Russia Day, a national holiday. It should be pretty lively on the pitch too, so join us from 1945 BST for full text commentary on all the action. We'll have the confirmed team news half an hour before kick off.
0' THE REF
Card-happy Wolfgang Stark takes charge of this one. He showed eight red cards in 27 matches in all competitions last season, as well as 110 yellows. Stark, aged 42, refereed three games at the last World Cup and has also overseen two Champions League semi finals, controversially sending off Pepe and Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid were dumped out by Barcelona in 2011. Known for having a stern reputation, Stark may have his work cut out in this potentially volatile Eastern European derby.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
These sides last met on a big international stage way back in 1982 when a 0-0 sent Russia home and put Poland into the semi finals of the World Cup in Spain. Their last encounter was in a 2007 friendly in Russia, when the hosts went into a 2-0 lead through Dmitri Sychev and Pavlyuchenko, before two goals in four second half minutes from Jacek Krzynowek and Jakub Blaszczykowski earned Poland a draw.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Franciszek Smuda is without his regular goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after the Arsenal shot-stopper was sent off against Greece. Przemyslaw Tyton, already a bit of a national hero after saving the penalty for which Szczesny saw red, will deputise. Adrian Mierzejewski and Kamil Grosicki are also in line to come into the XI. Russia coach Dick Advocaat has stated that wasteful striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who had seven shots against the Czechs and failed to place a single one on target, will not be replaced by goalscoring substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko, so Russia look set to be unchanged.
0' PREVIEW
They laid down a marker in the first game, registering the biggest victory of Euro 2012 so far with a 4-1 thrashing of Czech Republic, and now Russia will look to cement a place in the knockout stages. They won't have it easy against co-hosts Poland, though. After disappointing slumping to a 1-1 draw against Greece, the Poles know defeat tonight could render their campaign over before it's even really got started. Plenty at stake in Warsaw then, and it's got all the makings of a lively night.
