Ukraine vs. France
Minute Commentary
90' FRANCE 2 - 0 UKRAINE
It was a game that promised so much, but the drama turned out not to be on the pitch. A tumultuous electrical storm forced referee Bjorn Kuipers to call a halt to the game after just five minutes, and it took almost an hour until the ball was next kicked in anger. Ukraine did well to control the French in the main, but did very little going forward and never looked likely to get back in the game following a quick-fire salvo from the French in the second half. Jeremy Menez bagged the first on the break and Yohann Cabaye made it 2-0 just minutes later with a fine finish after great work by Karim Benzema. The French weren't great, but did enough in difficult conditions to grab a win that sends them top of Group D. It sets it up nicely for the England v Sweden match, and Ukraine and France both know that a win in their final game would definitely see them through. In Donetsk it finished France 2, Ukraine 0.
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes - accompanied by a chorus of boos, which seems a little harsh from the home fans.
89' TIME TICKING AWAY
The match is rapidly approaching full-time, and France are doing their best to take the sting out of the game with some controlled possession football.
86' YELLOW CARD
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is a bit clumsy in the challenge as he tries to track back, and the referee has little option but to show the veteran a yellow card. Samir Nasri goes for goal from the free-kick, but it isn't the best hit and skims harmlessly wide - which pretty much sums up Nasri's performance on the whole.
84' COMFORTABLE FOR LLORIS
A speculative shot from distance by Yevhen Konoplyanka has quite a bit behind it, but a deflection sends the ball looping into the air, allowing Hugo Lloris to come off his line and claim with ease. It's hard to see Ukraine getting two goals back with this little time on the clock, and the atmosphere inside the stadium reflects that.
83' M'VILA SHOOTS OVER
Yann M'Vila finds himself in space in the Ukraine half, but the midfielder's shot is high and wild, asking no questions of Andriy Pyatov in between the sticks.
81' OVER THE BAR!
Oleksandr Aliyev has a chance to pull Ukraine back level with a free-kick on the edge of the box, but his effort clears the bar by some distance.
76' FANS LOSING HOPE
Ukraine have played some tidy stuff tonight, but that quick-fire brace in the second half has knocked the stuffing out of both the team and the fans. The atmosphere has gone from jubilant to demoralised, but there's no doubt that spirits will be raised in time for the crucial final game against England.
74' FRENCH CHANGE
Karim Benzema is replaced by Olivier Giroud, and the reaction of the Madrid front-man tells you that he is not best pleased about being withdrawn.
71' RIBERY EYES IT UP
Yevhen Khacheridi's clumsy foul on Franck Ribery on the edge of the area gives the winger a chance to show off his set-piece skills from a perfect position just outside of the box. His effort isn't far away, but doesn't dip in time to find the target.
70' DEVIC GOES FOR GLORY
Marko Devic sets off on a mazy run deep into French territory, but faced with the option of shooting from distance or playing in Andriy Shevchenko he opts for the former... and his effort does nothing to trouble Hugo Lloris in the France goal.
68' CHANGES ON BOTH SIDES
Ukraine make their final change, bringing on Oleksandr Aliyev for Andriy Yarmolenko, while France look to keep it tight in the centre of the park by bringing on Yann M'Vila for Yohan Cabaye.
66' DEFLECTED WIDE
You have to give it to Ukraine, they are still giving it a right go. Andriy Yarmolenko twists and turns on the edge of the area in an attempt to get a shot away, but a deflection sees the ball scoot behind for a corner.
64' OFF THE POST!
The boos ring around Donetsk as France play keep-ball on the edge of the Ukraine box for a matter of minutes. Yohan Cabaye finally goes for goal, and his excellent curling shot comes back off the upright after leaving Andriy Pyatov rooted.
63' FRANCE IN TOTAL CONTROL
The French are oozing confidence all of a sudden and it's looking very concerning for Ukraine as Karim Benzema, Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri begin to see more and more of the ball in the final third.
59' MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB FOR THE HOSTS
That two-goal salvo has stunned Ukraine and it's going to take something pretty special to get them back into the game from here. That opening win over Sweden means that qualification will still be in their own hands going into the final game against England regardless of this result, but Oleg Blokhin would prefer to see his side pick up at least a point to give them some breathing space in the group.
55' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Karim Benzema did the damage as he spun away from his marker and found plenty of space to thread a ball into the run of Yohan Cabaye. The midfielder got a bit lucky with the break of the ball from the challenge by the last defender, but his shot was emphatic and nestled into the far corner with Andriy Pyatov virtually helpless. 2-0!
55' GOOOAAALLL!!!
France have turned this game on its head in a matter of minutes! Yohan Cabaye makes it 2-0.
53' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Ukraine were stretched as Franck Ribery rocketed down the left. The winger's ball in was closed down well, but the French had numbers over and Jeremy Menez was the spare man - cutting back inside and slotting past Andriy Pyatov. It's a classy goal and leaves Ukraine with it all to do.
52' GOOOAAALLL!!!
France take the lead through Jeremy Menez to silence the home crowd. 1-0!
50' ANOTHER DECENT EFFORT
France are wide open on the break as they try and throw numbers forward, and this time it's the unlikely figure of defensive midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk who gets up to the edge of the box and fires a shot narrowly over Hugo Lloris' bar.
49' OVER THE BAR!
Andriy Shevchenko cuts inside onto his right foot at the end of another Ukrainian counter-attack, and the striker's shot gets the crowd on their feet as it fizzes fractionally over the bar!
48' BRAVE DEFENDING
France have started the second 45 with a bang, and only some last-ditch defensive interventions are keeping Ukraine level.
46' SECOND HALF
The second half is underway in Donetsk, and Ukraine have made a change - replacing Andriy Voronin with the more attacking Marko Devic.
45' DELAYED KICK-OFF IN KIEV
The repercussions of this game running behind time is that England v Sweden in Kiev will now kick-off 15 minutes later to avoid overlapping with the conclusion of this match.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end the first half in Donetsk. After the drama of the opening five minutes - when a huge storm forced the game to be halted for almost an hour - there has been very little between the two teams... which will be much better news for group leaders and tournament co-hosts Ukraine. France will need to look for something different after the break as they created very little of note, while for the home team it will be a case of more of the same. At half-time in Donetsk it's France 0 - 0 Ukraine.
45' MENEZ IS A LUCKY BOY!
The youngster is already on a booking and gets nowhere near the ball as he flies into a challenge. The referee does him a huge favour by keeping the cards in his pocket as that could easily have been red.
43' FRUSTRATION FOR FRANCE
Karim Benzema again finds himself on the ball inside the box and to the left of goal, but faced with a wall of yellow shirts there is little he can do and the final pass is inevitably cut out. Laurent Blanc has plenty to think about after this first half and really needs to get some support up to the Real Madrid striker.
39' YELLOW CARD
Ukraine just about deal with the corner and break at pace, only for Jeremy Menez to get a little nudge on Andriy Yarmolenko and send him to the turf. There's nothing much in it, but with the counter attack building and the crowd making their feelings felt it's little surprise to see the referee reach for a yellow card.
38' MEXES TESTS PYATOV
The home crowd are not happy about a slightly soft free-kick for a block on Franck Ribery. The delivery in from Samir Nasri picks out Philippe Mexes, and the keeper does well to get a hand to it and palm the ball behind for a corner.
36' FRANCE MAKE A HASH OF IT
A loose ball cannons around the French box and is bundled behind for a corner. The ball in isn't the best, but Karim Benzema's sliced clearance sends the ball straight into the mixer, where only a brave intervention by Philippe Mexes sees the danger dealt with.
33' SHEVCHENKO!!!
The talisman of the side is picked out and cuts into the box for a first sight of goal. His volley from an angle is well hit, but Hugo Lloris would have been disappointed had he been beaten from there and blocks well.
31' FURY FROM RIBERY
The mercurial winger shows off his pace with a burst down the left, and only a well-timed challenge by the covering defender nicks the ball behind for a corner. That IS what happened... but not according to the officials, who give a goal-kick. Ribery is furious and lets the referee know exactly what he thinks of that!
28' PYATOV TO THE RESCUE
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk puts his team in all sorts of problems with a badly hit pass along the back, and Franck Ribery robs possession and bursts into the area down the left. His cross is nicked away from Karim Benzema but falls straight to Jeremy Menez... only for the keeper to make himself big and block the shot. That could so easily have been 1-0, and Ukraine would have been kicking themselves for gifting the chance to France.
26' BEST CHANCE OF THE GAME!
Serhiy Nazarenko dallies on the ball in his own area and Franck Ribery nips in to steal possession. His pull-back finds Jeremy Menez, but the youngster's curling shot flies over the bar.
24' LLORIS SHEPHERDS IT OUT
Andriy Yarmolenko hits across a shot slightly, and Hugo Lloris is happy to watch it drift just wide of his near post. It's encouraging for the hosts though - they are getting numbers forward on the break and are giving the group favourites plenty to think about.
22' SOLID AT THE BACK
Karim Benzema is seeing plenty of the ball compared to earlier in the week against England, but Ukraine are doing well to shut him down and limit the number of options he has on. You have to say that Benzema's attacking colleagues could also do slightly more to help him out.
19' PHYSICAL APPROACH FROM UKRAINE
Aided by a pitch that is slowing France's usual crisp passing game, Ukraine are getting lots of pressure on the ball and are giving the French plenty to think about with some extremely robust challenges.
16' NO GOAL!
Jeremy Menez gets on the end of a lovely ball from Samir Nasri that dissects the defence, but the pass was delayed for too long by the Manchester City midfielder and the linesman's flag saves Ukraine as Menez's shot nestles in the back of the net.
15' NO SUPPORT FOR BENZEMA
The France striker does well to get in between the two centre-backs and knock the ball back with a strong header, only to find that not a single team-mate has gambled on getting up in support. Frustrating!
14' LOTS OF SPACE ON THE COUNTER
Ukraine haven't really created much, but are finding plenty of space when they manage to get the ball off the well-oiled French. It's pretty evenly balanced, with both teams likely to be reasonably happy.
11' TOUGH TACKLING
Gael Clichy goes in late on Andriy Yarmolenko but the referee feels that the Ukrainian is making a bit of a meal of it so gives the full-back just a talking to.
8' OPEN ENCOUNTER
The match hasn't really settled after the restart, with both teams finding plenty of space on the counter. Karim Benzema once again pops up in possession - this time inside the box - but a crowd of defenders merge to deny him the space to get a shot away.
6' BENZEMA HAS A POP
The ball will be extremely slippery so it's no surprise that Karim Benzema cuts inside and has a pop from distance to test Andriy Pyatov. The keeper doesn't attempt to catch the ball, but comfortably palms it away.
5' RESTART
A drop-ball sees France return the ball to Ukraine and we're back underway.
5' HERE COME THE TEAMS... AGAIN!
The players are back out and we're set for a restart. It can't be understated just how heavy that storm was. It's a superb stadium in Donetsk, but there are many grounds around the world that wouldn't have been able to handle that amount of rain, and credit should also go to the ground-staff for their tireless work at removing the standing water. The fans are back in their seats, the lightning has moved on and we're safe to continue.
5' RESTART ON THE HOUR
The worst of the storm has passed in Donetsk and the officials are looking to restart the game on the hour. That should give the fans enough time to get back to their seats and for the pitch to soak up some of the standing water.
5' NO KICK-OFF UNTIL 18:00
News has come through that if this match is restarted then it will not be before 18:00 UK time, meaning we've got at least half an hour before we see any football in Donetsk.
5' MATCH DELAYED
The players are still off the pitch due to the bad weather in Donetsk - namely the lightning. We'll keep you updated when any decision is made on a restart or rescheduling of this match.
5' UNPRECEDENTED SCENES
The conditions inside the stadium are quite astonishing. The rain is falling so heavily that the pitch is drenched and rivers of water are cascading down the stands. The thunder is deafening and the lightning is directly above the ground, with fans rapidly emptying the vast unsheltered areas of the ground and looking for cover. It's anybody's guess how long we're going to be off here - the pitch is a little waterlogged in places and will need a few minutes to sort once the storm has passed.
5' HALT TO PROCEEDINGS
Extraordinary scenes in Donetsk as bolts of lightning crack through the sky above the stadium. The referee takes an immediate decision and stops the game, sending the players back to the dressing rooms until the storm passes.
4' SHARP OFF HIS LINE
Samir Nasri dinks a ball through towards Jeremy Menez, but goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov is sharp off his line to clear.
3' RISKY BACK-PASS
Philippe Mexes pings a ball back to Hugo Lloris which the keeper does well to control and clear. That was an unnecessarily risky option from the centre-back given how treacherous the surface is becoming.
2' TRICKY UNDERFOOT
Ukraine try to launch an early break, but Andriy Voronin can't stay on his feet as the rain begins to make the pitch slippery and the chance goes begging.
1' KICK-OFF
France get the game underway and an early spell of possession is met with a chorus of boos. What an atmosphere!
0' THE ANTHEMS
The teams emerge from the tunnel into a cauldron of colour and noise. As the French belt out their anthem the heavens open and a crack of thunder and lightning adds to the drama of the occasion. Soaked to the skin, Ukraine's players and fans give it their all in probably the loudest rendition of an anthem that the tournament has seen so far!
0' TEAM NEWS
France drop Florent Malouda with the exciting Jeremy Menez coming into an attacking unit packed full of creative talent. Ukraine stick with the same system that saw them beat Sweden, with Andriy Shevchenko and Andriy Voronin leading the line.

0' THE GHOSTS OF 2010
The failures of 2010 are a heavy weight on French shoulders in this tournament, and if Franck Ribery, Samir Nasri and co are to get the fans back on their side then they need a win this evening. Faced with another team who are likely to defend deep and restrict them in the final third, Laurent Blanc's side will need more from Karim Benzema up top. The Real Madrid front-man was phenomenal all season, but will need to spark if France are to achieve their potential in Poland and Ukraine.
0' HOPES OF A NATION
It was the fairy-tale story of the tournament, but Andrei Shevchenko will have hopes of building on his brace in Ukraine's opener. Having nursed himself through the last two seasons just in order to spearhead his country's efforts in this tournament, Shevchenko was too much for Sweden to handle in the box on Monday evening and will fancy his chances against a back-line that looked shaky at times against England.
0' UKRAINE VS FRANCE
Group D leaders and tournament co-hosts Ukraine stunned the competition with their victory against Sweden in the opening round of games and will be looking to secure qualification with a win over group favourites France in Donetsk this evening. The French need a result after being held by England in the opening game, so expect fireworks… both on and off the pitch if the home fans have their way!
