Portugal vs. Holland
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
Portugal fully deserved this victory. And then some. They could have wiped the floor with the Dutch had Ronaldo and Nani converted more chances, but as it was Ronaldo's two goals were good enough in what was a 2-1 thrashing. Holland, despite a lively start when they took the lead through Van der Vaart, were desperately poor. Vulnerable at the back, lifeless in attack, and lacking any kind of leadership or team spirit, they're a shadow of the side which reached the World Cup final just two years ago. But take nothing away from Portugal, they played with great freedom and created endless chances. They now go on to face the Czech Republic in the last eight and on this form they'll be strong favourites to reach the semi finals. Full time in Kharkiv, Portugal 2 Holland 1.
90' FULL TIME
It's all over for the despondent Dutch, but Portugal are into the quarter finals.
90' BERT OUT?
Are we seeing the dying embers of Bert Van Marwijk's reign? He may have got Holland to a World Cup final, but the ignominy of losing all three matches there - and the manner in which they've capitulated - is surely too much for the Dutch FA to stomach. They've been absolutely awful.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes left in Kharkiv.
90' OFF THE POST
For the second time tonight Cristiano Ronaldo hits the post. He could have scored four. Great shot too - left-footed, from 20 yards, with Maarten Stekelenburg motionless.
89' VAN PERSIE CHANCE
Holland's tournament in a nutshell. Van Persie is given a sniff of goal from a through ball but he drags wide from 18 yards. He'd have scored that at the Emirates a few weeks ago.
88' PORTUGAL SUB
Rolando replaces Nani as Portugal shore up their defence.
87' HUNTELAAR CHANCE
The anonymous Huntelaar volleys wide from 12 yards. The Dutch fans were clamouring for him to be in the side after those two defeats, but he's done absolutely nothing tonight. The same could be said for most of his team mates.
84' SELFISH
From a dreadful Sneijder corner Portugal break at speed and should wrap this up. But a selfish Nani chips onto the roof of the net, with Ronaldo free on the left and waiting for a cross.
83' GROUP B UPDATE
Germany have taken the lead in Lviv through Lars Bender. They're now on nine points, with Portugal on six, Denmark three and Holland zero. Sounds so simple now, doesn't it?
82' OFF THE POST
Van der Vaart scored a scorcher with his left foot in the first half and he nearly repeats the trick with his right here. It's a similar distance, from the left-hand side of the box, and it smacks against the post. Great technique.
81' NO EFFORT
Well you certainly wouldn't have looked at the Dutch tonight and thought their Euro 2012 hopes were on the line. They've lacked urgency, effort and cohesion for the vast majority of the evening. Their body language is appalling.
80' OLIVEIRA HEADER
A deep corner is nodded back across goal where Nelson Oliveira heads into Stekelenburg's arms.
79' NERVOUS GERMANS
So with Portugal winning it's now Germany's turn to be nervous. If Denmark take a 2-1 lead then it's Germany who will move to third in the group. Surely not?
78' CLAIMED
Nani, who aside from that awful miss a few minutes ago has been excellent tonight, sends a low ball across goal which Maarten Stekelenburg claims.
77' SNEIJDER SHOT
Sneijder sends a tame effort straight at Rui Patricio. If you thought the Dutch were disorganised in their first two Group B games, you should see them now. No formation to speak of.
76' COULD GET UGLY
This could get very ugly in the final 14 minutes. Holland are out on their feet and, with three at the back and Ronaldo chasing a hat-trick, you'd put money on another Portuguese goal or two if they fancied it.
74' PORTUGAL 2-1 HOLLAND
Bye bye, Holland. CRISTIANO RONALDO dumps the Dutch out of the competition, showing Nani how it's done. Nani actually tees him up as Portugal rip Holland's non-existent defence apart on the counter, sending the ball to the left of the area where Ronaldo takes a touch and slides past Stekelenburg.
72' SITTER
This is the sittiest of all sitters in sitter land. Nani absolutely has to give Portugal the lead but somehow - somehow - passes an atrociously-calm six-yard shot straight at Stekelenburg after Ronaldo rolled the ball across goal. That's shocking.
71' PORTUGAL SUB
Custodio replaces Raul Meireles for Portugal.
70' 3-1-6
Just to confirm, it's three at the back for the Dutch - Vlaar, Mathijsen and Van der Wiel, with De Jong sitting in front. Then it's a free-for-all for Afellay, Van der Vaart, Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder and Huntelaar. Ronaldo is licking his lips at the wide open gaps ahead of him.
70' BOOKING
Van Persie leaves a stray - but non-malicious - arm in on Pepe's face as the two leap for a high ball. Pepe, as you'd expect, makes the most of it. Van Persie is booked for his carelessness.
69' GROUP B LATEST
No movement in Lviv in the second half, so it's still Germany 1-1 Denmark. That suits Portugal fine and dandy.
68' HOLLAND SUB
This is what you call a kitchen sink substitution. Forward Ibrahim Afellay replaces defender Jetro Willems. Holland, who need to score twice, now have six attack-minded players on the pitch.
67' COENTRAO SHOT
Fabio Coentrao pings a decent effort goalwards which Maarten Stekelenburg pushes wide.
64' PORTUGAL SUB
Paulo Bento tries to get his side going again by replacing Postiga with Benfica's Nelson Oliveira.
62' GONE QUIET
With Denmark continuing to threaten against Germany, Portugal know they may need to win here. It's gone a bit quiet in Kharkiv though. Calm before the storm, perhaps.
59' OFFSIDE
Portugal have the ball in the net but it's ruled out for offside. From a half-cleared corner Ronaldo's cross-shot is turned in by Postiga, but he's correctly flagged.
56' EMBARRASSING
Excruciating behaviour from Joao Pereira who drops like a stone when slightly touched by Sneijder, with the Holland man looking to take a quick free kick. Grow up.
55' JOAO MOUTINHO
Decent effort from Joao Moutinho who drills wide left-footed from 20 yards. Portugal have been the better team since the break, continuing where they left off at the end of the first half.
53' VLAAR CHANCE
Massive chance for Holland, their first in about 40 minutes. Unfortunately for them it drops to centre half Vlaar, who sends a free six-yard header over the bar from Sneijder's delivery.
51' BOOKING
Bit of a shocker from Willems, this. After a heavy touch he goes in extremely hard and two-footed on Moutinho. His saving grace is that he gets some of the ball and Moutinho does well to shield himself. But at the very least that's a booking.
48' BLOCKED
Exquisite control from Ronaldo as he beautifully takes a chipped pass into the box, before seeing his shot blocked. He's in the mood tonight.
47' UNLIKELY
So progression from Group B looks highly unlikely for the Dutch. They need to win by two goals and hope Germany beat Denmark, but neither of those is happening. A two-goal win for Holland looks least likely of all.
46' SECOND HALF
Holland, who like Portugal are unchanged, kick the second half off. Expect twists and turns aplenty in the next 45 minutes.
45' HALF TIME
A strange half in Kharkiv, with Holland starting off so brightly and then being torn apart by Portugal, who completely dominated play from the 15 minute mark onwards. Ronaldo has looked lively, while Van Persie has been anonymous for the Dutch. But this could still go either way.
42' TOO HIGH
A Nani cross just evades the leaping Ronaldo in the six yard box. Portugal will be very disappointed not to be in front at half time if they can't score in the next three minutes. They should have one foot in the quarter finals by now.
40' RARE ATTACK
Very rare attack from the Dutch but all it yields is a disappointing Van der Vaart free kick, claimed by Patricio. It's a cliche, but they're just not playing as a team here. Van der Vaart, Robben and Van Persie are playing different games. There's no smart link-up play to speak of.
38' VELOSO SHOT
Veloso tries to catch Maarten Stekelenburg off guard with an unexpected shot from a free kick near the right corner flag. The inswinging shot isn't too far wide of the near post.
36' VULNERABLE
The Dutch look so vulnerable at the back it's untrue, even allowing for the attacking XI Bert Van Marwijk has selected.
34' ANOTHER CHANCE
Paulo Bento will rue these missed chances if Holland can end up sorting themselves out. Ronaldo flashes a header wide from Joao Moutinho's corner.
33' AS THINGS STAND
So Portugal are second as things stand, ahead of Denmark owing to the fact they beat them last week.
32' RONALDO SHOT
Only a matter of time before Portugal take the lead at this rate. Ronaldo stings Stekelenburg's fingers with a hammer drive from range.
30' NANI SHOT
Nani sends a left-footed shot not too far wide of the post. Portugal are dominating in Kharkiv and the Dutch are staring a Euro 2012 exit in the face if this continues.
28' PORTUGAL 1-1 HOLLAND
A deserved equaliser for Portugal and it's that man CRISTIANO RONALDO who breaks his tournament duck. Awful defending from the Dutch - a woeful Willems pass sets the Portuguese away, with Joao Pereira slotting a great through ball for Ronaldo who beats the offside trap and coolly slots past Stekelenburg.
27' SNEIJDER SHOT
Back here in Kharkiv, Sneijder goes close with a low 25-yard shot which Patricio does well to get behind.
25' GROUP B UPDATE
Michael Krohn-Dehli has equalised for Denmark in Lviv, making it one apiece. That means Germany and Denmark are through as things stand on seven and four points respectively, with Portugal and Holland stranded on three. But the way this night is going, expect the pendulum to swing many more times before the 90 minutes are up.
23' RONALDO CHANCE
You can barely keep up with this. A Nani cross reaches his former Man United team mate Ronaldo whose powerful header is parried by Maarten Stekelenburg. The keeper, winning his 50th cap tonight, did well there. Solid goalkeeping.
22' DE JONG CHANCE
The chances continue to come thick and fast. De Jong sends a four-yard header over the bar from a corner. He was leaning back.
20' OUT OF ROOM
Portugal are playing through Holland at will here. Mind you, if you play five attack-minded players, that's what's going to happen. Postiga goes on a run into the penalty area but hesitates to shoot and then runs out of room. Just not clinical enough when he has to think about it, is he?
19' GROUP B UPDATE
Big news in the other game - Germany have taken the lead through Podolski. That puts Portugal back in second place on goal difference. But if Holland score now they would be in second. Anyone got a calculator?
19' SIDE NETTING
It's all Portugal here. Meireles drills into the side netting.
17' SHOULD SCORE
Portugal could be 2-1 up here. A stray Van der Wiel pass across defence is straight to Helder Postiga who is through on goal - he draws Stekelenburg out but drags his shot horribly wide from 18 yards. Corner signalled but I'm not sure that was a save. Awful finish, with no conviction in it whatsoever.
16' OFF THE POST
Bento's team nearly hit back in style, with Ronaldo inches away from scoring his first goal of the tournament. Portugal are two-on-two and Ronaldo ambles in from the left before striking low against the outside of the near post. How unlucky.
15' STRUGGLING
Portugal are struggling to keep possession here. And Ronaldo isn't really in the game. They need to pull themselves together.
13' GOALLESS ELSEWHERE
Remember, a two-goal win for the Dutch is only good enough if Germany do their great rivals a favour and beat Denmark. It's 0-0 there at the moment.
11' PORTUGAL 0-1 HOLLAND
Let the fun and games begin - Holland have taken an early lead through a fabulous strike from RAFAEL VAN DER VAART. Robben cut inside from the left and teed up the Spurs midfielder, who curled an unstoppable 25-yard beauty into the corner past a helpless Patricio. One down for the Dutch, one to go.
10' OPENING UP
Both sides are starting to open up a bit here. The free-flowing attacking game we're all hoping for looks likely - just need a goal now.
7' RONALDO FREE KICK
Van der Wiel concedes a free kick in a dangerous position, 30 yards out. There's plenty of anticipation as Ronaldo - without a goal in Euro 2012 - lines it up, but his effort clips off the wall for a corner. From the flag kick, Pepe finds the roof of the net.
4' SNEIJDER SHOT
The first shot goes to the Dutch. A Van der Wiel cross is too high for Huntelaar but it drops to Sneijder at the back stick - he crashes wide of the post, so Patricio is untested.
3' CAGEY
A cagey start here, with both sides feeling each other out.
1' KICK OFF
Portugal get the ball rolling. The Netherlands are wearing their black away kit.
0' TEAMS OUT
The teams are out and two of Europe's under-appreciated anthems follow. Nothing too inspired about the tunes, but both sets of players and fans give it everything. Arjen Robben in particular is wearing quite a pained expression on his face. Perhaps he forgot to use the WC before leaving the dressing room.
0' LINE-UPS
As expected, Portugal field the same XI which beat Denmark 3-2. As for Holland, Bert Van Marwijk brings in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Rafael Van der Vaart and centre half Ron Vlaar. John Heitinga, Mark Van Bommel and Ibrahim Afellay make way, but Arjen Robben keeps his place in what is a very attacking-looking side. Full line ups: PORTUGAL: Patricio; Alves, Pepe, Joao Pereira, Coentrao; Meireles, Joao Moutinho, Veloso; Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo. HOLLAND: Stekelenburg; Van der Wiel, Vlaar, Mathijsen, Willems; Van der Vaart, De Jong, Sneijder; Robben, Huntelaar, Van Persie.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
Surely Holland can't be that bad for a third game running? Can they? Portgual will certainly hope not, because one - or both - of these sides is exiting Euro 2012 tonight. Join us from 1915 BST for the team news, with kick off following 30 minutes later.
0' THE REF
A repeat of some of the challenges from six years ago and Nicola Rizzoli will have no hesitation in showing the players who's boss. The Italian ref earned criticism from French and English quarters for his haphazard handling of their 1-1 Group D fixture last week.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Their last competitive meeting was an unforgettable one for anyone who witnessed it. Five players were sent off (with a further eight booked) in Nuremberg as Portugal edged the most tempestuous of encounters 1-0 to reach the 2006 World Cup quarter finals. Two years earlier the stakes were even higher when Portugal, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Maniche, beat Holland 2-1 in the Euro 2004 semi finals. In fact the Dutch have only ever beaten Portugal once in ten matches, which came way back in qualification for Euro 1992.
0' TEAM NEWS
Paulo Bento has a fully fit squad to choose from after Miguel Lopes recovered from a cold, so expect him to field the same XI which so dramatically beat Denmark 3-2. After two miserable defeats Bert van Marwijk has reason enough to ring the changes for the Dutch. Rafael van der Vaart, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Dirk Kuyt are three players who could come in.
0' PREVIEW
Well they didn't call it the group of death for nothing. The Group B fates of Germany, Denmark, Portugal and the Netherlands are still to be decided, meaning it's all to play for tonight in Ukraine. The Dutch have been the major flop of the tournament so far, but as Greece showed last night no team should be discounted, however unlikely the odds appear. A 2-0 win combined with a Germany victory over Denmark would see them through, while for Portugal victory will ensure their passage unless the Danes hand the Germans a beating. Prepare for an exciting - and complicated - evening.
