England vs. Ukraine
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
It was a bit ropey at times, like when Devic "scored" and Milevskiy missed a sitter, but England dug very deep for this win and fully earned their quarter final spot. Full credit to Hodgson's men - they contained the fiery hosts in the first half and gradually played their way into the game. Rooney got the all-important goal just after the break which really settled them down and, after the blitz of Ukraine chances on the hour mark came and went, it was England's to lose. Their newfound steely determination shone through in spades and the final few minutes were panic-free. What with France losing to Sweden, it's been the perfect night. Next up - Italy, on Sunday. Full time in Donetsk, England 1 Ukraine 0.
90' FULL TIME
It's all over in Donetsk - England are in the Euro 2012 quarter finals.
90' PETERED OUT
The Ukraine charge has petered out. Just seconds left now.
90' GROUP D UPDATE
Seb Larsson has doubled Sweden's lead. Looks nailed-on that England are the Group D winners now.
90' AS THINGS STAND
It's still France 0-1 Sweden so unless they concede twice England are heading for a quarter final meeting with Italy in Kiev on Sunday. France will face Spain on Saturday.
90' ADDED TIME
Just three minutes left for England to secure yet another 1-0 win under Roy Hodgson. It'll be their third from just five matches since he took over.
89' BREAK
Chance on the break for England but Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't pass to the unmarked Walcott and Ukraine intercept.
87' PENALTY APPEAL
Penalty shout for England as Carroll appears to be barged in the back by Yevhen Khacheridi. The ref isn't moved.
87' ENGLAND SUB
Rooney won't finish the full 90 after all. England's potential match-winner is replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who came on at a similar time against Sweden.
86' BOOKING
Something tells me Andriy Shevchenko is a tad frustrated. He slides in hard and heavy on Young with the ball going nowhere and picks up a thoroughly deserved booking.
85' CORNERS
Successive corners for the hosts. Terry clears the first and Rooney blocks Shevchenko sliding in for the second.
84' POSSESSION
Ukraine are enjoying most of the ball here. England don't look like they fancy a second goal.
82' ENGLAND SUB
Andy Carroll replaces Danny Welbeck to offer England something different up front. Wayne Rooney has done well to last 82 minutes and it looks like he'll finish the full 90 now.
81' NAZARENKO SHOT
The umpteenth Ukraine long shot clears Hart's bar. Substitute Serhiy Nazarenko unleashed this one, but as with most of the others it was all power and no accuracy.
81' COMING HOME?
"Football's coming home" is the chant from the England fans. Steady on lads, we're not even in the quarters yet.
80' 10 TO GO
Right, ten minutes left and England are in the perfect position, both in this match and in the group. Remember, Ukraine need to win this game if they're to go through, so there's a chance the hosts will lose heart if they don't score one soon.
79' BOOKING
A soft booking for Ashley Cole for time wasting while taking a throw.
78' UKRAINE SUBS
Two changes in a minute for Ukraine. Serhiy Nazarenko and Bohdan Butkofor have replaced Denys Garmash and Artem Milevskiy.
77' WAYWARD
There are plenty of white shirts in the box protecting Hart's net, so the trigger-happy Yevhen Konoplyanka goes for goal from range. It's a wayward shot, miles over.
75' ROONEY HEADER
Rooney drops deep to reach a Gerrard corner, but sends his header straight at Pyatov from ten yards.
75' BOOKING
Another booking as Yaroslav Rakitskiy is penalised for a late foul on Gerrard.
74' GREAT CLEARANCE
Yevhen Konoplyanka thumps one from range - Hart fumbles it but Joleon Lescott clears the loose ball ahead of three attackers closing in. That's brilliant defending.
73' ON A YELLOW
Fear not England fans, Gerrard wasn't already on a yellow card. For England, Milner was and Young still is. Selin and Tymoshcuk are walking that tightrope for Ukraine.
73' BOOKING
Gerrard is booked for a firm aerial challenge.
72' CORNER
The pressure on England is relieved as Rakitskiy thumps a deep corner too high for everyone.
71' GROUP D UPDATE
England continue to lead Group D, with France losing 1-0 to Sweden. Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted for the Swedes.
70' UKRAINE SUB
Here he comes. Andriy Shevchenko is cheered to the rafters as he replaces Marko Devic.
69' ENGLAND SUB
No Shevchenko yet - England are making a change first. An exhausted Milner is replaced by Theo Walcott, who will give Yevhen Selin a completely different kind of problem. Stretch those legs, Theo.
68' COLE CHANCE
A Milner cross is flapped at by Pyatov who touches it towards Cole - the left-back hammers in a half volley rebound from 15 yards, which the keeper does well to parry wide. Very nearly Cole's very first international goal.
66' SHEVA SOON
How England survived that two-minute spell I don't know, with Milevskiy's sitter preceding the goal that never was. Anyway cometh the hour, cometh the man - Andriy Shevchenko is being readied on the touchline.
64' AWFUL REFEREEING
I guess that's payback for Frank Lampard's non-goal at South Africa 2010. Ukraine have every right to feel extremely hard done-by. I just don't see how the guy behind the goal doesn't spot it - he's looking dead straight down the line, with no player in the way. Awful refereeing.
63' SIDE NETTING
At the other end Rooney sends a 25-yard free kick into the side netting.
62' NO GOAL!!!
Ukraine won't go any closer than this to scoring. In fact replays show they HAVE scored - but the linesman and/or the fourth/fifth official mistakenly judge that it hasn't crossed the line. Devic is through on goal - he steadies himself and chips over Hart via a deflection, but Terry gets in a heroic clearance. On first glance it looks like it's right on the line, but the slow-mo proves it definitely crossed, albeit by a fraction. Absolutely astonishing. Even though it went over that's an incredible clearance from Terry. He threw himself at the ball and dug it out.
61' MILEVSKIY CHANCE
Blimey, this is too close for comfort. England fall asleep from a quickly-taken Ukraine corner and Yarmolenko crosses to Artem Milevskiy, who somehow sends his unchallenged five-yard header over Hart's bar. That was easier than Rooney's first half miss. What a massive let off for England.
59' IN CHARGE
England are in charge at the moment. Ukraine look deflated and, before they get a second wind, England could well kill this game stone dead. A second goal would surely do that.
59' CLEARED
Another stonking cross from Young, with Terry as the target this time, but Ukraine clear their lines.
56' TOO HIGH
Young very nearly finds his Man United team mate Rooney, as he did for that first half chance, but this time the left-wing cross is a fraction too high. After two very poor performances against France and Sweden, Young has put in a good shift tonight. He's defended better and swung two or three excellent crosses over into the box.
55' GROUP D UPDATE
Very surprising scoreline here - Sweden are beating France 1-0. At the moment England are winning the group by three points and are heading for a meeting with Italy in the last eight.
54' BREAK
Fantastic opportunity on the counter for England - Gerrard knocks it low into the Ukraine half and suddenly Rooney is racing clear of the non-existent defence. He reaches the box and is caught by Yarmolenko, who has a tug at his shirt, before Rooney tees up Milner who scuffs a shot straight at a defender. Not clinical enough there, Rooney. Lack of match sharpness again.
53' PRESSURE
Good pressure from Ukraine in response. They force another couple of corners.
51' CAPTAIN FANTASTIC
Five goals for England in this tournament and three assists for Steven Gerrard. Talk about captain fantastic - he's enjoying an excellent Euro 2012 so far.
50' CORNER
Corner for the hosts but it deflects away from Hart. It's the England fans behind that goal that you can hear now.
49' RELIEF
Relief for England then. Huge relief, and breathing room, but they've got to keep their concentration. Ukraine will throw everything they've got at them in the next 41 minutes.
48' ENGLAND 1-0 UKRAINE
He couldn't miss this time - WAYNE ROONEY has given England the most important of leads and silenced Donetsk in the process. A half-cleared Gerrard corner is fired back into the six-yard box by the England captain - it deflects past a motionless Pyatov off a leg and Rooney guides the ball over the line from barely a yard out.
46' SECOND HALF
Here we go then. In 45 minutes England will either be out of Euro 2012 or in the quarter finals.
45' HALF TIME
Mission half accomplished for England. Their containment strategy has, on the whole, been successful but plucky Ukraine have given them plenty to think about. They've peppered Hart's box with crosses and shots, although the keeper's reflexes haven't been properly tested yet. At the other end England did very little other than create the game's best chance for Wayne Rooney. Let's hope the Three Lions don't rue Rooney's profligacy.
43' ENTERPRISING
Fantastic run from Ukraine's star man tonight, Andriy Yarmolenko. He twists past Parker and Cole in the box before Lescott shepherds the ball out for a fruitless corner. Enterprising run from the unpredictable wide man, who is giving Ashley Cole a very tough evening.
41' PARKER SHOT
Disappointing from Scott Parker who telegraphs a poor 25-yarder past the post. Not like him to selfishly waste a decent position, but he had options left and right there.
39' HAPPY HODGSON?
I imagine that Hodgson will be the happier of the two managers so far. Ukraine, for all their possession, haven't seriously tested Joe Hart. If this is as good as they've got, England have nothing to fear. And they've got the better options on the bench.
36' YOUNG CROSS
Young gets to the left byline for the first time. His drilled cross is importantly cleared by Rakitskiy ahead of Welbeck.
35' TENSION
You can just feel the tension in this game, it's rife. The first goal is going to be so important.
32' TERRY HEADER
From the corner, a Gerrard outswinger, Terry nods over the bar off balance.
32' YOUNG SHOT
End to end stuff now, with England finally playing a full role in this game. Gerrard pings a Hollywood pass to Young who drifts in and sends a deflected 25-yarder behind for a corner.
30' YARMOLENKO SHOT
And now Ukraine forge their best opportunity. They sweep the ball nice and quickly to Andriy Yarmolenko, on the right of the box. He cuts inside Cole and shoots low at Hart from 15 yards. It's getting pretty lively in Donetsk.
29' SITTER
That was the chance of the game by a country mile. Perhaps a lack of match sharpness did for Rooney there. Really though, there's no excuse. It was a sitter of the highest order.
28' ROONEY CHANCE
You cannot believe Wayne Rooney has missed this. It's a free six-yard header, from a gorgeous inswinging Ashley Young cross, and Rooney plants it wide. There was no defender anywhere near him. Oh Wayne.
26' WASTE
Three players in the box for England but Milner over-hits a cross from the right. That's such a waste, especially considering how rare England attacks have been so far.
25' GET MOVING
Right, time to get moving now England. They've done well to weather the early Ukraine storm but they need to show more going forward. They can start by having their first shot at goal, which surely isn't too much to ask.
24' FREE KICK
Gerrard, who has created goals for Lescott and Carroll in this tournament, nearly does it again with a wicked free kick delivery from 40 yards out on the right. Rooney dives in with his head but just falls short and the ball deflects for a corner, which comes to nothing.
22' GUSEV SHOT
Basic error from Young who allows a raking cross-field pass to bounce over his head. Ukraine right-back Oleh Gusev duly steps in a cracks a fierce 20-yarder past Hart's left-hand post. England can't allow their concentration to slip like that.
21' INTACT
So England have passed the 20-minute mark with their clean sheet intact. It's all Ukraine though - the 'visitors' have only ventured meaningfully forward on a couple of occasions.
18' PEPPERED
Yevhen Konoplyanka is allowed to drift in from the left. There's a packed penalty area ahead of him though and his eventual shot is blocked. England are being peppered with shots and crosses, but Hart hasn't had much to do yet.
17' GROUP D UPDATE
We'll be keeping an eye on matters in the other Group D fixture tonight, France v Sweden. If France don't win it'll open things up for either England or Ukraine to top the group. England can also edge out France on goal difference with a win by two goals or more. Anyway, it's 0-0 so far.
16' AWKWARD
A low, curling Selin cross from the left is an awkward one to deal with for England. It's headed towards Artem Milevskiy before a touch from a sliding Terry helps it through to Hart.
15' WILD SHOT
Centre half Yaroslav Rakitskiy gets ahead of himself, shooting from 35 yards. It's a terrible effort which flies into the top end of the stand behind Hart's net. Ukraine are mad keen.
14' PUNCHED
Gerrard's inswinger is right on the top of Andriy Pyatov who does well to convincingly punch clear.
14' CORNER
Johnson swings over a cross from the right which floats just over Rooney, but Oleh Gusev takes no chances and concedes a corner. Safety first.
13' BLOCKED
Questionable defending by England who allow a low left-wing cross to reach Marko Devic. He shoots from 18 yards but Scott Parker bravely blocks.
11' COLE CROSS
A prolonged passing move ends when Cole drills the ball across goal from the left. Welbeck doesn't quite make it in time and keeper Andriy Pyatov collects. Much better from England, who will look to make inroads into this Ukraine midfield now they've survived a tricky opening 11 minutes.
10' GENTLY DOES IT
Whenever England regain possession they're passing it gently around at the back, trying to take the sting out of the game. Good ploy from Roy.
9' FRENZIED
There's a frenzied feel to this Ukraine play - they're really going for it, but they can't keep this pace up for too long. England are being stretched.
8' DANGER
Dangerous, very dangerous. The floating Andriy Yarmolenko drifts in from the right unnoticed in behind Lescott and Terry - the ball is slipped through to him, 20 yards out, but a poor touch allows England to recover. That's a warning sign.
7' GARMASH SHOT
Decent hit from Denys Garmash. He puts his laces through a 30-yarder which isn't too far over Joe Hart's bar. The keeper had it covered, though.
7' ROONEY QUIET
Rooney has barely touched the ball in the opening seven minutes. England have spent most of that time defending or playing it around as neatly as they can at the back.
5' ON TOP
Ukraine have started the game on top and at a high tempo. Hodgson will have expected this though - nothing to fear for England yet.
3' HOSTILE
It's pretty hostile for England here. Not the worst you've heard or seen, but certainly highly partisan. The first 20 minutes will be absolutely crucial in terms of subduing the hosts.
2' BUSY START
Busy start from the eager hosts. Yevhen Konoplyanka flashes a wayward long-range effort miles wide.
1' KICK OFF
The ball is rolling in Donetsk. England are in white, Ukraine blue.
0' ANTHEMS
Joe Hart is hilariously and loudly out of tune for God Save The Queen. Roy Hodgson sensibly mumbles the words under his breath. The Ukraine anthem is second (as technically Ukraine are the 'away' team tonight) and the home fans give it plenty.
0' TEAMS OUT
Grunts of 'come on boys' from Messrs Johnson and Hart as England leave the tunnel and enter the arena. Donetsk is a sea of yellow, with a smattering of white.
0' LINE-UPS
As expected, Andy Carroll makes way for Wayne Rooney, who appears in a European Championship for the first time since making such a huge impact on Euro 2004 in Portugal when he was just 18 years old. That's the only change to the side which beat Sweden 3-2, meaning super-sub Theo Walcott is still on the bench. The big news for Ukraine - and a huge blow to their hopes of victory - is that Andriy Shevchenko has failed to recover from a knee injury. Andriy Voronin is also missing from the XI as Oleg Blokhin pairs Marko Devic and Artem Milevskiy up front. Full line-ups: ENGLAND: Hart; Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole; Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young; Rooney, Welbeck. UKRAINE: Pyatov; Gusev, Khatcheridi, Rakitskiy, Selin; Yarmolenko, Garmash, Tymoschuk, Konoplyanka; Devic, Milevsky.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
The Ukrainians will be baying for English blood in what is certain to be a rambunctious atmosphere in Donetsk. It'll be a huge test of character for Hodgson's squad - but if they pass that test, Euro 2012 glory will only be three games away. Join us for what is sure to be a dramatic night from 1915 BST when we'll have the official line-ups. Kick off follows at 1945 BST.
0' THE REF
Respected Hungarian ref Viktor Kassai takes charge of this one. It's his second game of the tournament, after handing out seven yellow cards in Spain's 1-1 Group C draw with Italy last week. Kassai refereed a Champions League semi final last season, and the final itself a year earlier, as well as a World Cup semi final in 2010.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
The bad news for England is that on the four occasions these sides have met over the years, the home team has won each match. Twelve years ago Robbie Fowler and Tony Adams netted in a 2-0 Euro 2000 warm-up victory at Wembley, while four years later David Beckham, Michael Owen and Shaun Wright-Phillips found the target in a 3-0 win at St James' Park. In 2009 a late John Terry goal edged a tight 2-1 World Cup 2010 qualifying contest at Wembley - with Shevchenko netting for Ukraine - before Serhiy Nazarenko scored the winner in Dnipropetrovsk later that year as Ukraine took advantage of Rob Green's red card to win 1-0. England, though, had already qualified for the World Cup.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Theo Walcott, who made a match-winning impact off the bench against Sweden when he scored one goal and made another, has recovered from a hamstring strain. With Wayne Rooney finally clear of suspension, Hodgson has a 23-man squad to choose from for the first time. The big doubt for Ukraine is captain, talisman and scorer of their two goals in the tournament, Andriy Shevchenko. He has a knee problem and is only rated as 50-50.
0' PREVIEW
It's crunch time for England as they're thrown into the lion's den in Donetsk, looking to ruin the hosts' party and reach the quarter finals of Euro 2012. Whisper it quietly, but things are starting to look pretty good for Roy Hodgson's squad after a couple of excellent results. What with the tournament favourites - Germany aside - flattering to deceive, hopes are surfacing that England could go far in this tournament. It would be typical of them to kill everyone's expectations stone dead, but perhaps things aren't so 'typical' under Hodgson. We'll soon find out.
