Czech Republic vs. Portugal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: CZECH REP 0 PORTUGAL 1
Cristiano Ronaldo's header gives Portugal a deserved place in next Wednesday's semi-final in Donetsk where they will play the winners of Saturday's clash between Spain and France. The Real Madrid forward underlined once more that he is the class act at this tournament, arriving with 11 minutes remaining to meet a cross from the right by Joao Moutinho to bullet a header past Petr Cech. It was no more than Paulo Bento's side deserved, because they were the team playing to win the match rather than not to lose it. Portugal were slow out of the blocks, but they took control from around the 35-minute mark, played the bulk of the good football and created by far the better chances. Ronaldo hit the post after a brilliant turn and shot just before half-time and struck the woodwork again soon after the restart with one of his trademark dipping free-kicks. Nani and Joao Moutinho forced fine saves from Petr Cech, but Ronaldo was not to be denied and netted his third goal of the tournament. The former Manchester United man plays as if he is possessed, driven by a desire that no-one else in his side can come close to. The way he is going Ronaldo could win the Euros on his own.
90' LIMBERSKY VERY LUCKY
David Limbersky is fortunate not to be sent off for a late tackle on Joao Moutinho.
90' CZECH REP BOOKING
David Limbersky is cautioned for a foul borne out of frustration. Four minutes of stoppage time to play.
89' CONVERSION ATTEMPT FROM VELOSO
Ronaldo's cross is stabbed away, but Veloso's strike would have cleared three sets of goals.
88' PORTUGAL SUBSTITUTION
Rolando takes the place of Raul Meireles.
87' PORTUGAL CHANGE ON THE CARDS
Rolando is getting ready to come on for Portugal. Ronaldo tumbles in the box, but Mr Webb simply smiles at him.
86' CZECH REP SUBSTITUTION
Defensive midfielder Tomas Hubschman is replaced by striker Tomas Pekhart. A bit late, boys.
84' PORTUGAL SUBSTITUTION
Nani is replaced by Custodio. Portugal want to hold on to what they have.
83' CECH STOPS AGAIN
The Czechs are leaving holes at the back here. Joao Pereira exploits the space and shoots, but Cech beats the ball away, despite the fact he must have seen the shot late.
80' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a thumping header from the former Manchester United man. Joao Moutinho crossed from the right and Ronaldo got in front of Theodor Gebre Selassie to head past Petr Cech from eight yards. Justice is done.
79' GOAL: CZECH REP 0 PORTUGAL 1
Cristiano Ronaldo heads Portugal in front.
77' AIMLESS FROM NANI
Nani plays a one-two with Moutinho, but crosses straight into the arms of Petr Cech. He did not even look up before delivering that ball.
76' STILL ONE-WAY TRAFFIC
Meireles holds off a challenge to slip a pass through to Nani, but his deflected effort drops just the wrong side of the crossbar.
73' WELL OVER FROM MEIRELES
Ronaldo takes the ball down expertly and tees up Meireles, who launches the ball into orbit from just inside the box.
71' GIMPY MEIRELES
Raul Meireles turns his ankle in a tackle with Milan Baros. The Chelsea midfielder gets to his feet but has a pronounced limp.
69' KADLEC BACK ON
Michal Kadlec is a brave boy. He's come back on to take his place at the heart of the defence. Can't see Nani shrugging off a knock like that. Meanwhile, Ronaldo's snap-shot goes well wide.
67' CZECH REP INJURY
Petr Cech comes to claim a cross and knees his star defender Michal Kadlec in the ribs. That's hurting now, so it's really going to hurt in the morning.
65' FINE SAVE FROM CECH
A poor clearance from Tomas Sivok falls at the feet of Joao Moutinho. His thumping 20-yard drive is dipping under the crossbar, but Cech thrusts up a left arm to tip it over. Hugo Almeida then heads over.
64' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who were the six players prior to Cristiano Ronaldo to have scored in three different European Championship finals. They were: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, Vladimir Smicer, Helder Postiga, Jurgen Klinsmann and Nuno Gomes. If you got four or more correct answers, well done. Three correct or fewer? Back to the trivia training pitch for some more swatting, please.
63' POOR FARE FROM BAROS
Milan Baros tries an ambitious angled drive from at least 25 yards out. It sails into the stands.
62' CZECH REP SUBSTITUTION
Vladimir Darida is replaced by Jan Rezek. The youngster has been an anonymous figure tonight. Rezek coming on would suggest Rosicky is not even fit for a cameo role.
60' BLISTERING RUN FROM PILAR
Vaclav Pilar ducks and weaves his way past three lunging tackles down the left, only to pick out a Portugal defender with his cross.
59' GOAL DISALLOWED
A cross from Nani is headed into the net by Hugo Almeida, but the effort is rightly ruled out for offside.
58' GOOD SAVE FROM CECH
Nani appears to pull Theodor Gebre Selassie but play is allowed to continue and Petr Cech is forced to dive to his right to turn away a fierce shot from the Manchester United wingman.
57' MEIRELES MILES WIDE
A Joao Moutinho corner is headed out to the edge of the box, Raul Meireles tries a first-time shot which is nowhere near goal.
56' BLANK CHEQUES
There is only one team trying to win this match at the moment and they are not wearing red. If you offered the Czechs penalties now they would likely take it.
54' RONALDO THREATENS AGAIN
A lofted ball over the top sees Ronaldo get half a yard on Theodor Gebre Selassie. The finish from the edge of the area is hurried, though, and is sliced high and wide.
51' IT'S TRIVIA TIME
Cristiano Ronaldo is the seventh player to score in three different European Championship finals, but who were the previous six players to have achieved the feat? Answer in a few minutes.
49' OFF THE POST AGAIN
Ronaldo lashes a 35-yard free-kick into the wall. Darida blocks it with his arm so it's now a 25-yard free-kick. The second set-piece dips beyond Cech and clips the outside of the right-hand upright.
48' WE ARE NOT AMUSED
Michel Platini, sat in the stands, looks bored to tears.
47' ALMEIDA HEADS WIDE
Portugal should be in front inside the opening minute of the second half. Raul Meireles delivers from the left, but Hugo Almeida heads over disappointingly from eight yards. That was a very bad miss.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Portugal get the second half under way.
45' HT: CZECH REP 0 PORTUGAL 0
It's goalless at the interval and before that piece of brilliance just before half-time from Ronaldo there had been precious few clear-cut chances in what has been a disappointing first quarter-final so far. The Czechs, cheered on by the majority of supporters in this stadium, settled the quicker, but despite forcing several corners they have failed to threaten, mainly because their set-piece delivery has been poor. At the other end, Petr Cech made a magnificent save to deny Ronaldo, unaware that referee Howard Webb had already whistled after a foul by the Portugal forward. Ronaldo was also not that far away from a long-range free-kick. Neither team has set out to be negative, it's just their build-up play has been well below par so far. The Portugese, however, have dominated the closing stages of the half and will go into the break the happier.
45' OFF THE POST
Ronaldo brings down a long diagonal ball from Meireles, cushioning it on his chest and letting it fall to the ground before turning and firing a right-foot shot against the foot of the post. It was brilliant from the Real Madrid man and deserved a goal.
43' PENALTY CLAIMS FROM NANI
Nani demands a penalty after a tackle on him by Limbersky in the box. Mr Webb says no and he's absolutely right. He went to ground way too easily there.
40' PORTUGAL SUBSTITUTION
No, it was Postiga's hamstring. Hugo Almeida, 27, takes his place.
39' PLAYER DOWN INJURED
Helder Postiga is down, holding his right hamstring. Either that, or he has been hurt by one of those glares from Cristiano Ronaldo.
38' BARGAIN BASEMENT
For me, Czech Republic winger Vaclav Pilar has been one of the players of the tournament. He completed a move from Hradec Kralove to Wolfsburg before the start of Euro 2012, and the paltry £1million the Bundesliga club paid for his services already looks a bargain, especially when you recall Jordan Henderson cost Liverpool £16million. He's been quiet tonight, mind.
35' LONG-RANGE FREE-KICK GOES WIDE
A foul by Limbersky on Nani gives Ronaldo a shooting chance from a free-kick some 30 yards from goal. His swerving kick drifts wide of the left-hand upright.
32' OVERHEAD KICK WIDE
Fabio Coentrao raids forward from the left and his cross is deflected behind for another Portugal corner. This time it is Joao Moutinho who delivers, but Czech defender Michal Kadlec heads away. A sloppy clearance from Gebre Selassie sees Pepe set up Ronaldo, but his ambitious overhead kick goes wide.
28' PEPE TO THE RESCUE
Theodor Gebre Selassie gets down to the bye-line and fires in a dangerous cross which is superbly snuffed out by Pepe.
27' DOUBLE BOOKING
Nani and Miguel Veloso are both in the book in quick succession for clumsy challenges.
26' RONALDO DENIED
Cristiano Ronaldo bursts through the centre to collect a straight pass from Miguel Veloso. His rasping shot from ten yards is beaten away brilliantly by Cech, but Mr Webb had already awarded a free-kick for a foul by the Portuguese.
25' SAFE HANDS FROM CECH
Fabio Coentrao sees his cross from the left deflect off the boot of Theodor Gebre Selassie. For a moment it looks like Petr Cech might end up looking like a fool, but the Chelsea goalkeeper gets back safely enough.
23' THREE-MINUTE HERO
Cristiano Ronaldo has been seeing more of the ball as the tournament has progressed. His time of possession in Portugal's three group matches is: (v Germany 49 seconds; v Denmark 1 min 1 sec and v Holland 1 min 29 secs). The incredible thing really is that in three matches, Ronaldo's total time of possession is just three minutes and 19 seconds.
21' WARNING FROM MR WEBB
Ronaldo is being pushed all over the place by Petr Jiracek as the pair await a right-wing corner. Pushed from Pilar to post, you might say. Referee Webb warns the Czech midfielder.
19' BAROS NOT FAR AWAY
The Czechs go close to taking the lead. Vladimir Darida escapes his man down the right and delivers a teasing cross which is just out of range of the outstretched right foot of Baros in the middle.
17' MORE CZECH PRESSURE
It's a third corner for the Czech Republic. Rui Patricio comes to try and punch away, but Ronaldo is there in front of him to head safely away.
15' WATCH YOUR STEP
Jaroslav Plasil, David Limbersky, Tomas Rosicky, Tomas Pekhart, Petr Jiracek and Daniel Kolar will all incur a suspension should they receive a yellow card. The men walking a similar tightrope for Portugal are Helder Postiga, Ronaldo, Fabio Coentrao, Raul Meireles and Joao Pereira.
13' TAME EFFORT ON GOAL
Finally we get a shot at goal. It's from Joao Moutinho. It's from long range. And it's tame. Petr Cech gathers.
12' WASTED CORNER
It's a first corner for Portugal. Raul Meireles lofts to the far post, all Portugal's players run to the near. Oh dear.
10' IMPATIENT RONALDO
Ronaldo is in no mood to tolerate ineptitude. He's already had a right go at Postiga for holding the ball too long and then giving it away.
7' SO FAR SO GOOD
It's early days, of course, but Portugal will be pleased about how they have defended so far tonight. Greece were 2-0 down to the Czechs by this stage in the group match.
6' WELL TURNED OUT
Ronaldo, by the way, has gone for the Scott Parker look. Hair slicked back, quite a bit of gel, and a side parting. He's a crowd pleaser is young Cristiano.
4' PRESSURE ON THE RIGHT-BACK
Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie has a big job on his hands tonight, trying to keep Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.
3' EARLY CZECH CORNER
The Czechs win the first corner of the match. They take it short and basically make a right pig's ear of it.
2' COLOUR CODING
For those of you watching the commentary in black and white tonight, the Czechs are all in red, with Portugal in all white. Referee Howard Webb is all in black, just in case you are interested.
1' HERE WE GO
The Czech Republic kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TEAM NEWS
Tomas Rosicky has failed a fitness test, so his place in the Czech Republic midfield goes not to the man who deputised for him last time out Daniel Kolar, but Kolar's Viktoria Plzen team-mate, Vladimir Darida. Portugal are unchanged for a fourth straight game, with Raul Meireles and Bruno Alves having been declared fit.

0' PREVIEW
We're now down to the business end of the tournament, with the Czech Republic and Portugal meeting in Warsaw in the first of the four Euro 2012 quarter-finals which will be played over consecutive evenings, culminating in the little matter of England facing Italy in Kiev on Sunday. After witnessing their opening matches it would have been a little hard to imagine either side getting to the end of the group stages and still harbouring dreams of winning the tournament. The Czech Republic produced a display that was naive in the extreme as they were hammered 4-1 by a Russia side that picked them off on the break, while Portugal's 1-0 defeat by Germany owed much to their negative safety-first approach. Both, though, have found their feet and recorded back-to-back victories. With Spain the likely opponents awaiting in the final four, it is difficult to see either of these sides going all the way, but there is enough talent and attacking ambition on show to suggest that what we should get is a very watchable game of football. And if the continent's outstanding player in Cristiano Ronaldo continues to show the sort of form that destroyed Holland in the last match, anything could still be possible for the Portuguese. Tonight's match kicks off at 1945BST (1845GMT), so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, followed by a live match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Two matches in to Euro 2012, Cristiano Ronaldo was having a tournament to forget. Nothing really fell his way in the opening defeat by Germany and in the second match against Denmark the Real Madrid star missed a hatful of chances, most notably a one-on-one just moments before Nicklas Bendtner's equaliser and the costliest flashing of underpants in sporting history. The shocked expression on Ronaldo's face [related to his misses, not the Arsenal man's choice of green boxers] suggested that even the most self-confident players on the planet have the occasional moment of self-doubt, but the swagger returned in the final match when he netted both goals in the 2-1 win over Holland. Those strikes made Ronaldo the first Portuguese player to score at five major tournaments. He also scored at the Euros in 2004 and 2008, and at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. The Czechs will remember he bagged one goal and set up two more last time these teams met in the finals of a major championship, in the group stage of the Euros four years ago. Tomas Rosicky was the player expected to shine for the Czech Republic at this tournament, but the Arsenal midfielder has been dogged by injury and one of the men to really catch the eye has been fellow midfielder Petr Jiracek. The bearded Wolfsburg player set his side on the way to victory over Greece in the second match with an early opening goal, then netted the crucial winner which saw the Czechs through at the expense of tournament co-hosts Poland. The other player to impress has been Vaclav Pilar, who boasts incredible skill and is a very tricky customer for whoever lands the unenviable task of trying to mark him.
0' HOW THEY MADE THE LAST EIGHT
The Czech Republic lost their opening match to Russia 4-1, before rebounding to win Group A with six points after successive victories over Greece and co-hosts Poland. Portugal also lost their opening match, 1-0 to Group B winners Germany, before winning their next two. Paulo Bento's side beat Denmark 3-2, blowing a two goal-lead before securing maximum points with a late strike by Silvestre Varela, and then came from behind to beat Holland 2-1.
0' TOURNAMENT RECORD
It is Portugal's sixth appearance in the finals and their fifth in a row. They finished runners-up in 2004, when they were hosts of the tournament, losing to Greece in the final in Lisbon, and reached the semi-finals in 2000. The Czech Republic have qualified for the last five European Championship finals and have appeared eight times overall. They were winners in 1976 as Czechoslovakia and runners-up at Euro 96 in England, with Germany their opponents on both occasions.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Czech Republic captain Tomas Rosicky faces a late fitness test on the Achilles injury that forced him to miss the final group game against Poland. Rosicky returned to training on Wednesday, but if he is deemed unable to play the full 90 minutes his place will again go to Daniel Kolar. Bruno Alves and Raul Meireles are both expected to recover from the minor knocks they picked up against Holland and Paulo Bento could well name an unchanged line-up.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
There have been 11 previous encounters between Portugal and the Czech Republic, with each country having won four times and three matches being drawn. It is also level in head-to-head meetings in the European Championship finals, the Czechs winning 1-0 at Villa Park in Euro 96 courtesy of a goal from Karel Poborsky, with Portugal winning 3-1 in the opening round in Geneva four years ago thanks to goals from Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of tonight's game is English Premier League referee Howard Webb, who is no stranger to big games having refereed both World Cup and Champions League finals in 2010. It's Webb's second appointment involving the Czech side in these finals, the South Yorkshire whistleblower having overseen their heavy defeat by Russia on opening day. Webb also took charge of the draw between Croatia and Italy which saw some largely undeserved criticism of his performance after the game from Croatia coach Slaven Bilic.
