Portugal vs. Spain
Minute Commentary
120' SUMMARY
Justice has perhaps been done. After a below-par first half Spain were the better side thereafter, and were the only team looking to win in extra time. It's a shame for Portugal, who started the game so brightly, but they didn't play to their strengths - i.e. Ronaldo - and were clinging on at the end. As for Spain, well their passing game never really reached top gear but they just about did enough. They'll surely have to improve to win the final though. Full time in Donetsk, Portugal 0 Spain 0 (2-4 on penalties).
120' NO RONALDO
Ronaldo looks on in disbelief as the Spaniards start celebrating. Fabregas is one lucky man - it clipped off the post and rolled into the opposite side netting. But where was Ronaldo in the shoot-out? Surely he should have gone first instead of Moutinho, who saw his kick saved. Or perhaps he bottled it, ala Robben, and was ninth in the list.
120' PORTUGAL 2-4 SPAIN
AND FABREGAS DOES!!! It's in off the post and Spain are through!
120' PORTUGAL 2-3 SPAIN
Bruno Alves is up again but Nani should have stopped him again. He crashes against the bar. Ronaldo hasn't even taken one yet but Spain can win it with their next kick...
120' PORTUGAL 2-3 SPAIN
Pirlo take two - Sergio Ramos dinks right down the middle, with Rui Patricio fooled. Incredible calmness.
120' PORTUGAL 2-2 SPAIN
You don't see this every day - Bruno Alves was walking up but Nani stopped him and took it himself, sending a terrific penalty into the roof of the net.
120' PORTUGAL 1-2 SPAIN
And another centre half, Gerard Pique, edges Spain back in front. Into the side netting - great spot kick. The tension keeps on rising.
120' PORTUGAL 1-1 SPAIN
Centre half Pepe is next up for Portugal. Pressure kick....and he scores. Casillas couldn't reach it.
120' PORTUGAL 0-1 SPAIN
Daddy cool Andres Iniesta show Patricio the wrong way, slotting it to the keeper's left. Nicely done. And the net finally ripples.
120' PORTUGAL 0-0 SPAIN
Saved!!! Casillas guesses right in more ways than one to deny Moutinho. Two decent penalties but the keepers have done themselves proud there. And still we remain goalless...
120' PORTUGAL 0-0 SPAIN
Xabi Alonso, scorer of a penalty in the quarter final, sees this one superbly saved by Rui Patricio. Early drama in the shoot-out. Advantage Portugal and it's Moutinho who's stepping up.
120' SPAIN END
The penalties are to be taken at the end of the ground where the majority of the Spanish fans are camped. Perhaps a small advantage to Del Bosque's team there? Or does it merely ramp up the pressure? Very impressive squad huddle from Portugal a second ago by the way.
120' MENTALITY
It's all about the mentality of the players at this point. Portugal were physically and perhaps mentally shot in extra time, while Spain had all the momentum but couldn't eke out a winner. My money's on Spain. Casillas is a great keeper to have in a shoot-out.
120' FULL TIME
And that's it. Spain's charge was too little, too late.
120' CUT OUT
Arbeloa gets to the right byline - that's how hard Spain are pushing - but his cross is cut out.
119' PEDRO RUN
Slalom run by Pedro but he can't get a shot away and Portugal survive. Another five or ten minutes and Spain would almost certainly win this game, but time is fast running out.
118' CLEARED
The outstanding Pepe clears a fierce Alba cross ahead of Fabregas. He and the equally brilliant Bruno Alves has earned their team a shot at penalties here.
116' STRETCHED
Spain are certainly pushing harder than Portugal for a winner. The Portugal defence is being stretched to the limit. They've got just four minutes to survive.
114' COVERED
Fabregas beautifully dinks it through for Pedro to chase - for a moment it looks like he's through on goal but Fabio Coentrao sprints across to intercept in the nick of time. Brilliant cover from the left back.
114' BOOKING
A nasty one from Alonso here as he goes through Ronaldo, late and heavy. He picks up a deserved booking for his troubles.
113' PORTUGAL SUB
Raul Meireles shuffles off, his night's work done. Silvestre Varela, goalscorer against Denmark in the group stages, is given seven minutes to win the game. Or maybe he just takes a decent penalty.
111' BACKPASS?
Navas drills a decent effort from the right of the area - Patricio saves well but spills it towards Pepe, who appears to deliberately pass it back to his keeper. The referee isn't convinced though. A five-yard free kick would have been pretty interesting.
110' DEFLECTED
A Fabregas shot from outside the area loops into the arms of Rui Patricio.
108' NOT INJURED
Ronaldo buys some time, pretending to be injured after falling over while jostling with Ramos. Portugal are definitely ready for penalties.
107' COENTRAO CROSS
Fabio Coentrao gallivants down the left but with four Spain players keeping Ronaldo company in the box, it's unlikely his cross will find his team mate. And so it proves.
106' PORTUGAL SUB
Custodio has entered the fray for Portugal, replacing Veloso.
106' SECOND HALF
We're into the final 15 minutes of the game. Spain are the favourites, with Portugal looking very tired.
105' HALF TIME
Ronaldo missed one at the end of the second half and now Iniesta has missed one at the end of the first half of extra time for Spain. It really was a golden opportunity.
105' JUST OVER
Sergio Ramos drills a well-struck long range free kick just over the bar. Patricio was scrambling.
104' INIESTA CHANCE
He's been called back from his annual leave now though - Rui Patricio has just pulled off a stunning save. Pedro and Alba combined down the left with the latter crossing for Iniesta. He was free eight yards out but sidefooted too close to Patricio who was able to parry wide. Great reactions.
102' CORNERS
Successive corners for Spain but there's no threat to the Portugal goal. The same could be said of the rest of the evening. Rui Patricio has essentially had a night off in a Euro 2012 semi final against the European and world champions. Very strange.
99' PEDRO DOWN
The ref stops play with Pedro requiring treatment. He was absolutely smashed into by Pepe in an aerial challenge. No malice, but the slight-framed Pedro was no match for the brutish Pepe.
96' BLOCKED
A left-wing cross is half cleared to Iniesta whose rebound shot is well blocked by Bruno Alves. Spain are playing all the football here - Portugal look set for penalties.
95' POOR
Alonso plays a clever pass to Pedro on the left but he runs straight into Joao Pereira. Portugal's right back has had a good game but that was poor from Pedro in a rare opportunity to stretch Bento's defence.
93' EXCITEMENT NEEDED
Well let's hope extra time is more exciting than the second half. We're heading for the tournament's second successive 0-0 draw (after England v Italy), despite there being none before that.
91' LIMITED
Portugal have got two substitutes left, but is there anyone Bento is willing to use? His options are fairly limited. Former Inter winger Ricardo Quaresma is one, though. Or perhaps he could persuade Mata or Torres to switch nationalities. They'd be happy for the game time I expect.
91' EXTRA TIME
Spain get the ball rolling again. Thirty minutes left to find a winner or it's the dreaded penalties in Donetsk.
90' FULL TIME
Statemate. Extra time awaits.
90' BOOKING
Veloso is the latest Portugal player in the book. It hasn't been a dirty game but they're racking them up now. He's too late on Alba here.
90' ADDED TIME
Three minutes left in Donetsk. Still can't believe Ronaldo missed that one.
89' WHAT A CHANCE
Oh, Ronaldo. What a chance this is - Portugal are four on three, Meireles switches left to Portugal's number seven, who blazes high and wide from the edge of the area. Even on his left foot, that's a shocker for a player of his standards. Spain were caught napping.
86' SPAIN SUB
Torres, Mata and Llorente can hit the showers. Pedro is Del Bosque's third substitute, with Xavi withdrawn. What a squad he's got at his disposal.
86' BOOKING
Bruno Alves is too strong on Fabregas and picks up a booking. Portugal's entire back four are now on a yellow card tightrope.
84' LET DOWN
Well I'm sorry to say the second half has been a bit of a let down. While the first was enchanting and intriguing, the second has been pedestrian and fairly lifeless. The two sides are cancelling each other out.
84' OVER THE BAR
Nope, he swings this one over the bar with the side of his boot. Disappointing. Just six minutes to go now.
83' BOOKING
Free kick, Ronaldo territory, from which Arbeloa handballs in the wall. So the next one will be ten yards further forward - the expectation levels can rise again.
81' PORTUGAL SUB
Benfica youngster Nelson Oliveira is on for Almeida.
79' WASTE
Chance for Portugal to put pressure on with a free kick on the right, but Veloso completely wastes it, punting it into Casillas' arms. Portugal have been very wasteful in the second half.
77' WILD
Wild shot from Fabregas who lashes one into the stands from range. Spain haven't created a decent chance for a good long while.
77' NO YELLOW
Alves is lucky to avoid a booking after going through the back of Fabregas. After the standard Cakir has set in this half, that's a nonsense decision.
74' GREAT CHALLENGE
Tenacious defending from Moutinho - Portugal's star performer tonight - as he keeps a close eye on Iniesta and then perfectly times a sliding tackle. If rumours are to be believed he'll be following compatriot Andre Villas Boas to Spurs in the near future. On this evidence he's too good for them.
73' NOTHING TO CHOOSE
Right, just 17 minutes until extra time and there is nothing to choose between Portugal and Spain. Del Bosque's boys have probably edged this half but they're not creating enough chances. Portugal continue to look dangerous when they get men forward on the counter.
72' RONALDO SHOT
Huge anticipation as Ronaldo lines up a 30-yard free kick. The ref takes an age to blow his whistle, and when the shot comes it's not too far over Casillas' bar.
70' PICKING UP PACE
The pace is starting to quicken now, particularly from Spain. They don't want extra time. Jesus Navas and Fabregas have both looked bright since coming on.
67' XAVI SHOT
Spain have their first shot on target on the evening, believe it or not. It's Xavi with it, from 25 yards, but Rui Patricio makes a comfortable save.
64' STOP-START
Three bookings in three minutes then, which is symptomatic of the stop-start nature of this second half.
63' BOOKING
Fabregas plays a lovely one-two outside the box before being pulled down by Joao Pereira. Chance for Spain coming up with a free kick on the left. Pereira has been booked.
61' SPAIN SUB
A second change for Spain. Jesus Navas is on for the disappointingly quiet David Silva.
61' BOOKING
Pepe catches his Real Madrid team mate Alonso with a strong aerial challenge. Foul yes, but a booking? Cakir thinks so.
60' BOOKING
Busquets has gone in the book for chatting back to Cakir, who isn't taking any prisoners tonight.
59' AND AGAIN
And again Almeida fires off target, this time from a tight angle on the left. Ronaldo would have loved a cut-back.
57' ALMEIDA SHOT
Huge waste from Hugo Almeida. He has the ball, 25 yards out and dead centre, but instead of passing left to Nani or right to Ronaldo, he crashes a hopeful effort over the bar. Not good enough.
56' MEXICAN WAVE
The crowd are letting the two sides know what they think of the action - they're started a Mexican wave.
54' SPAIN SUB
No surprise to see the ineffective Negredo withdrawn. If Spain make the final I very much doubt he'll still be in the side. Cesc Fabregas enters the fray as Spain look to dominate midfield.
53' GOAL NEEDED
The hugely impressive Moutinho links up with Joao Pereira down the right to win a corner for Portugal, but again it comes to nothing. As interesting as this has been, we could do with a goal now.
51' CORNER
Good movement from Spain who work it wide to Arbeloa. His dangerous cross is cleared for a corner, which comes to nothing.
48' SPOT ON
Portugal continue to press Spain high up the pitch. Del Bosque's team can't settle into a rhythm in the Portugal half, and that's to Bento's credit. As already stated, his tactics are spot on.
46' RONALDO'S TIME?
So Ronaldo didn't really come to the party in the first half, but Portugal managed just fine anyway. If he steps things up in the second period it could make all the difference.
46' SECOND HALF
Here we go. Both sides are unchanged.
45' HALF TIME
Watchable, very watchable. The only downside has been the lack of goals. But Portugal's high-tempo, closing down approach has certainly rattled Spain, who have struggled to make any headway into the Portugal third. Too close to call so far.
45' BOOKING
The referee has booked Fabio Coentrao, but it's not obvious what the offence was. Perhaps he spoke out of turn.
44' ANONYMOUS
The two most anonymous players on the pitch have probably been the two strikers, Almeida and Negredo. The latter in particular just isn't get involved in Spain's passing game, or doing enough off the ball beyond the Portugal defenders. Expect Torres or Fabregas to be utilised early in the second half.
43' MIS-TIMED
Pique mis-times his jump when trying to nod clear a Pepe long ball and Almeida nearly sneaks in behind.
43' POSSESSION
Sure Spain are winning the possession battle, but only by 57 to 43. That's nothing by their standards.
40' BOOKING
Ramos checks Ronaldo's run and picks up the first booking of the evening. Think that's more for persistent fouling than anything.
38' THROUGH BALL
Silva nearly squeezes a through ball to Iniesta but it rolls through to keeper Rui Patricio.
37' FASCINATING
Just eight minutes to go until half time then and this is a fascinating encounter. Portugal have got their tactics spot on but Spain have still created the game's best chance, for Alvaro Arbeloa. Not sure how long Portugal can keep this high tempo up either.
34' NOT DEAD
Nani gives it the old "I'm nearly dead" routine after being brushed aside by Ramos, having the cheek to wait for the physios to come on. Something tells me he'll be fine.
31' SIDE NETTING
They're winning the ball back for fun today, Portugal. Spain just aren't getting a minute's peace. Moutinho slides in outside the Spain box and the ball breaks for Ronaldo, who drills a low shot into the side netting. Unlucky.
30' NO ADVANTAGE
Terrible refereeing here, I'm sorry to say. Nani steams through the Spanish back-line and looks set for a run into the box, but referee Cakir inexplicably brings it back for an earlier foul, giving a Portugal free kick. Deary me.
29' HOOF
If all else fails, go route one. With Spain being forced back Alonso hoofs it 60 yards towards Negredo in the Portugal box. To be fair he does well to bring it down and a chance soon follows, with Iniesta clipping over from 15 yards. See, long ball has its charms.
27' UP FOR IT
Superb hustle from the Portuguese who twice deny Spain the opportunity to clear their lines with some brilliant closing down. They're bang up for this, Bento's team.
26' THREATENING
Spain are playing some nice stuff, as you'd expect, but Portugal look far more threatening with their quick-paced attacks down the flanks.
23' AUDACIOUS
Audacious attempt from Ronaldo (as opposed to his normal shrinking violet demeanour) as he attempts a first-time 30-yarder on the turn with his left foot. It flies into the stands.
21' STRUGGLING
Spain had a brief spell of dominance but they're certainly struggling to play their natural game. Nearly a quarter of the game gone and Portugal have just about edged it.
20' NO FOUL
Controversial moment as Nani skips inside two players on the break, before going to ground. He's barely been touched by Ramos and has no reason to go down, but the Portuguese bench are livid that nothing is given by the ref.
17' PRESSURE
More good pressure from Portugal who win another corner down the left. They're certainly taking the game to Spain here, which is very refreshing and should make for a great game. It's boiling up nicely.
15' INFLUENCE
Here he goes - Ronaldo's influence is gaining. He nearly makes it to the left byline before being brought down by poor Alvaro Arbeloa, whose job it is to keep Ronaldo in check tonight.
13' SWIFT COUNTER
Veloso wins the ball in midfield and swiftly sets Ronaldo flying down the left flank. The Real Madrid man has got the beating of Pique and clips in a superb cross, which Casillas does brilliantly to claim ahead of Nani. That all happened in about five seconds.
10' THROUGH THE GEARS
And now Iniesta fires over from range. Spain are moving through the gears.
9' ARBELOA CHANCE
Spain's full backs get forward to great effect here. Alba bombs down the left and looks for Negredo in the middle - it evades the Sevilla striker but Arbeloa is following in behind and sidefoots over from 15 yards. Great opportunity, but a rushed finish.
8' POSSESSION
First prolonged possession for Spain but it ends abruptly when Xabi Alonso looks for Silva over the top and it doesn't quite reach the Man City magician.
6' FLOWING
Good, flowing start to the game here. Iniesta cutely flicks to Alba whose cross is blocked by that man Pepe.
5' FULL OF PEPE
First chance for Negredo to stretch his legs but Pepe nonchalantly strides across to win back possession.
4' GOOD START
Portugal aren't letting Spain get in their possession-based stride yet. Excellent start to the game from them.
2' CORNER
Good start from Portugal. They force a corner down the right - Veloso swings it right under Casillas' bar and the keeper has to touch behind for another flag kick, which he then confidently claims.
1' KICK OFF
Spain get this semi final underway.
0' ANTHEMS
He's got the football ability, the looks, the money....but he can't sing for toffee. Thank goodness for that. Ronaldo sends dogs all over the world into a frenzied howl with an awful rendition of the Portuguese anthem. We're nearly ready for kick off, but first up captains Casillas and Ronaldo give the crowd an anti-discrimination message. This is a Uefa 'respect' match, apparently. We'll see how long that lasts.
0' TEAMS OUT
It's a packed Donbass Arena which greets the two sides. This tournament just got very serious indeed.
0' LINE-UPS
As expected there's just one change for Portugal, with Hugo Almeida in for the injured Helder Postiga. Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas both miss out for Spain - as does Fernando Llorente - as Vicente Del Bosque surprisingly plumps for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo in what is the only alteration to his quarter final team.. Full line-ups: PORTUGAL: Patricio; Joao Pereira, Pepe, Bruno Alves, Coentrao; Meireles, Moutinho, Veloso; Nani, Ronaldo; Almeida. SPAIN: Casillas; Arbeloa, Pique, Ramos, Alba; Xavi, Busquets, Alonso; Silva, Negredo, Iniesta.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
Spain are the clear favourites but have proved their infallibility since lifting the World Cup – never more so than when being walloped 4-0 by Portugal in a Lisbon friendly. And with the seemingly immortal Ronaldo in tow, this one could go either way. We'll be live from 1915 BST with the official line-ups, followed by kick off at 1945 BST.
0' THE REF
The tournament's youngest referee, Cuneyt Cakir, has been given the honour of taking charge of this one. The 35-year-old from Istanbul, Turkey, is overseeing his third Euro 2012 match, following on from Ukraine v Sweden and Italy v Ireland in the group stages. In the latter he showed six yellow cards and sent off Ireland's Keith Andrews.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Historically Spain have the edge in this fixture with 16 wins to Portugal's six, but the majority of their victories came in the early part of the 20th century. Since 1958 it's been a different story, with Spain winning just two of 12 matches. One of those came at the 2010 World Cup when David Villa's goal edged a tight second round clash, six years after Nuno Gomes sent Spain crashing out of Euro 2004 in the group stages, with Portugal going on to reach the final.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Portugal boss Paulo Bento has selected the same XI for his team's four games so far, but he won't be able to continue that run tonight. That's because former Spurs striker Helder Postiga is out with a thigh injury. Hugo Almeida is likely to deputise. Del Bosque's selection headache may revolve around whether playing Cesc Fabregas or Fernando Torres in attack, although reports have suggested Barcelona man Pedro is in line for a start.
0' PREVIEW
Many people would have you believe a country called Cristiano Ronaldo, with a population of one but the combined hair gel and arrogance of millions, is taking on Spain in tonight's Euro 2012 semi-final. Well it's unlikely Portugal would have reached this stage without him, but even the might of Ronaldo surely isn't enough to single-handedly defeat the reigning European and world champions. In Vicente Del Bosque's slightly creepy words, Spain “have to deactivate him”. If they do, the final surely awaits, but Portugal will be full of confidence after producing some of the best football seen so far at the tournament. Add in the spice of an Iberian derby and we've got a salivating encounter in store.
