LONDON (AP) Resurgent Tottenham won its fourth straight Premier League match on Sunday, beating Aston Villa 2-0 with goals from Steven Caulker in the 58th minute and Aaron Lennon in the 67th.
Tottenham moved just outside the Champions League spots with 14 points from seven games and remains unbeaten in all competitions since losing on the first day of the season.
Villa dropped one place to 16th.
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas opted for France captain Hugo Lloris in goal ahead of Brad Friedel at White Hart Lane - the first time in more than eight years that the 41-year-old American has been dropped from the starting lineup for a Premier League game.
"We are fortunate that we can do this rotation," Villas-Boas said. "Obviously Brad was disappointed but as a great professional he ended up accepting the decision ... I'm sure he will be back in the team as soon as possible."
Tottenham occasionally looked vulnerable at the back, but played some of its best football of the season.
The hosts had some luck on the first goal after Jermain Defoe smashed a low shot wide from Gareth Bale's corner, but Caulker was standing in the right place at the right time and the ball clipped his heel and flew past Brad Guzan.
Spurs sealed the victory when Clint Dempsey was given time to set up Lennon who shot beyond Guzan.
Still chasing an away win in the league this season, Villa dropped to 10 men with 12 minutes left when Joe Bennett was carried off on a stretcher after colliding with advertising boards at the side of the pitch.
