WASHINGTON (AP) D.C. United have selected former MLS MVP Carlos Ruiz in the league's allocation process.

United announced Thursday that they have acquired the 33-year-old Guatemalan forward, who last played in MLS for the Philadelphia Union in 2011.

Ruiz has also played for Toronto FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy over eight MLS seasons.

He was the league's MVP with the Galaxy in his first MLS season in 2002, when he scored a league-high 24 regular-season goals and helped lead the team to the MLS Cup title.
