Mavuba faces up to 3 months out after knee op

LILLE, France (AP) Lille says midfielder Rio Mavuba needs to have a knee operation and faces up to three months out.

Mavuba, who has broken back into the France team under new coach Didier Deschamps, was injured against Rennes eight days ago and was diagnosed as having a meniscus problem in his left knee.

Coach Rudi Garcia hoped Mavuba would recover, but said on Lille's website that "Rio will have an operation. He should be out for between six weeks and three months."

The central midfielder played in France's World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus last month, but Deschamps will have to replace him for the upcoming qualifier away to Spain.
